Brugs almost all planted outside

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

praying for your baby gardenng buddy...Polly looks like she would be a wonderful firend out in the garden. I hope your vet can get to he cause of her problem. your yard looks like my yard, patti.
cloudy out an thunder to the west, a severe wind warning with a storm, but no such luck here yet.

Birdie, check those eaves underneath very close for worms. some are very tiny, some are bigger, pick em off or squish on the leaf, that is what I do..
they will get into your bud so take a lookie..
this brug cross has more than a worm problem, I am giving it some miracle grow all to itself to see if that brings the leaf colour back.

Didn't find any worms or caterpillars, but did find four flower pods !!! ! Oh boy am I excited! The pods range in size from about 1 1/2" - 3". Would that be a flush?? wonder how long till they bloom. ^_^
I'm doin the happy dance!

Sheri

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Good for you Sheri!!! You will have to share when they bloom.

This is what we are living with here today. This is my thermometer this afternoon. It goes up to about 110.5 when the wind isn't blowing through on it. Can you spell m-i-s-e-r-a-b-l-e? I feel so bad for my DH. His shop at the dealership doesn't have any windows on the east or north side they can open to get a draft through. Just one walk through door on the south and 3 big garage doors on the west. They have some big fans in there, but all the do is move around the hot air in there. (kind of like some of us! No names mentioned. lol)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

yippe Sheri!! a flush! whoo hoo! I AM so happy too!

gee Patti, does your hubby work with my hubby? he has no a/c at his work shop either, and it was 108 today and looking like 113 tommorrow.. ugh.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

How many does it take to have a Royall Flush? ^_^

This morning I did find a single teensie worm about 1/8:" long. Than tiny thing can't have done so mich damage to a dozen leaves, could it?

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Officially 114* in the shade at my house right now. May go up a little bit more before it starts to cool off about 8:30. UGH! I'm sick of this.

Could be Debra. And there is another main building on his west side, so that blocks any breeze there would be from that direction.

Some may see this on another thread, and I'm sorry if you do, but:
On a sad note, I lost my best gardening friend this morning .... Polly. She had been sick since Friday. Went to the animal emergency room Saturday and back to my vet this morning. It wasn't 2 hours after I dropped her off they called to tell me they had lost her. They resusitated her once, but couldn't get her back the 2nd time. Blood tests showed stuff all over the charts from too low to too high. Kidneys were all but shut down and her heart just gave out. She would of been 8 in October. Didn't know if she had gotten heat exhaustion or what. She stayed in the house and had a doggy door to go in and out, but if I was outside, she was there with me. Several times I had to lock her in to make her stay inside. I brought her home and my DH dug a nice grave for her in this rock hard dry ground that we have. Every time I look out my back window or go to the back yard I will see it and think of her. Polly-Wog, Polly-Wog Dog, Polly-Wolly Doodle, Little Fat Dog...... RIP my dear little fur baby. See the heart on her side? That is how big her heart was!!!!!!! The little grandkids could waller her all over and she just loved it She WILL be missed!

Was thinking of you and Duke today Debra.

One more of my little gardening buddy. Wherever I was, she was. Even in the house. Like my shadow.

oh poor Patti, I am so sorry for your loss. I know we will remember Our Gardening Buddies together.
Polly looks like she was a real Doll. So hard to replace them. I am not even going to try. Are you?

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Well, can't ever replace them as you well know. But DH mentioned we needed to get our youngster Bowzer another playmate or he will go crazy and be so lonely. He tries to play with my little blind dog, and she wants to but has a hard time. Is fun to watch them. So yes, we will get another one. I hope I find one as kindhearted as she was. She was my "pound puppy". Was 6 months old when I got her.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

awww you have a Bowzer?

okay, will start taking names for all the little brugs I have rooted ( why do I continue to do this?) Betty Marshall, flamenco, and cotton candy.

Council Bluffs, IA

crit so sorry for your lose.
well looks like birdie blue is going to see her first blooms real soon, congrats.
retta

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Thanks retta. Yes Deb, the dog we rescued from PAWS back in late winter is named Bowzer. ^_^

Please put me down for a start of your brugs.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Patti, I don't know why we havn't met up yet. You are only a few hours from me and certainly close enough for us to meet up this fall.
Mornin' Retta, hows your brugs doing?

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Thanks Sheri.

Yes Debra, we need to do that. After Sept. 30th I will be a lady of leisure (unemployed) for a while.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Can too much water cause brugs leaves to turn yellow and drop off? Thx.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

yes, and do not use ferts with high phosphate.. that turns leaves yellow too.. I am not an expert, but this is what they tell me. water when the soil is dry and you can tell it by sticking your finger down an inch or two.. just trying to help you..
Debra

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Don't let her fool ya. Debra IS the brug expert

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

oh no, everyone shold go to the brug threads and read the experts advice for sure .. I also remembred that if you have a brug in a large pot but it is a baby plant, you could be hurting it. I let mine get very very rootbound, before I pot up to a bigger size. So far all the small starts from side shoots I snipped off are rooting and leafing, YAY!

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Good for you Debra!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

thanks Debra, they are doing much better now that I took the saucer out and they have better drainage. 11 blooms this morning!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Well I finally found a small (1") orange grasshopper or cricket on the leaf under a flower pod. I flicked him off. I sure hope that was the glutton on my flushing Brug. I do so want to see the blooms. someone suggested 7 dust...would that be safe and help? Also I got to thinking about watering with my very dirty aquarium water and... if that would be too high nitrogen for more than a single time and am wondering??

Sheri

please, please give me some opinions on these two issues

I picked off five different sized worms from Maya tonight, went out with a flashlight to see what is makin the holes in her new leaf growth, so I got them off, threw them into the fish pond, sprayed her down with safer 3 in 1 spray. I am bringing her in this weekend, I can't bear to be away from her while I am in arkansas knowing she is trying so hard to bud out.

Sherri, I say yes to both. But I am not a brug expert... sorry..

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

darn it!! Guess that critter I got the other day was not the Brug eating varmint. The largest pod that I was hoping to see bloom any day was totally gone yesterday.
What a bummer! There are still 3-4 more, but what can I do to save them from becoming someones snack??

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

ut ohhs, maybe it aborted, ids it on the ground? look and see.. sometimes the birds land on my brugs and peck at a worm and knock the buds off, sometimes a squirrell plays and knocks them off.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

nothing on the ground. I saw a single small hole a few days ago into the pod That was when I found a reddish grasshopper thing on it and flicked it to mars. It has been a very busy week. Yesterday it appeared that the entire pod had been eaten,as the itty bitty base near the stem was there with a rippled chewed edge. ;-(

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have been pulling worms off all my brugs all day, some a qtr of an inch , some an inch long.. I hate bugs on Plants..especially brugmansias.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

so sorry about your bud birdie!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

bet you still get a lot of blooms, sherry.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

oh I do hope so!!! ^_^
thanks for the encouragement Debra

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

I noticed on some Brug starts that I thought were dead, they are starting to put out some new leaves.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Cool!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

you know, the deadest looking brug stick will surprise you, I never toss them until I have gone two minths without a spot of green on them, and then if I can snap them and they are hollow, they are trashed. Georgia Peach and Pink Perfection were trashed yesterday.. down to 28 brugs now.. only 20 more to get rid of LOL

Kaitlyn has buds and so does Maya ( again) but I am telling you after tommorrow trople digits and wind, they will be aborted. Cherub X berkonigon I grew from a seed I bought from phicks is a tree downstairs and budded out nicely with lush green worm free leaves., Time to bring them in I am telling ya..

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra if you are having very hot weather like we are you need to put your brugs in the shade if you can, otherwise the water you give them evaperates so fast they don.t have time to drink it.
I realy miss my brugs two years ago I had 120 now I have 3 it got to be so much work then I had a heart attack and my daughters conviced me to give them away, WRONG ADVICE because now I realy miss them and am starting to get a few back, I have a plant room to put them in during the winter months, it has glass on three sides so gets plenty of light. so if anyone needs a home for their brugs let me know *LOL*

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Doris, I have the seedlings of the crosses you sent me, you can have them now, but they are small trees. I hope I can find the tags, anyway, I have others you can have if you Really want them. I am dropping down to only 8 for now..

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

If you plan to get rid of them I would love to have maybe two, don't want to overdo it but would just like to have a couple in the house, if you have paypal I can pay for them that way or through the mail, just send me mail OK

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Gotya, Doris, will send when I get back from Arkansas...

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

I have a bloom!! In fact 2 more are beginning to open!! Finally, and this is the single plant that I have had for 2 summers now. Hopefully I can figure out how to post a picture for you all to see.. She is a beautiful double, pale green on the neck gradually changing to a lovely sort of light margarine yellow. It took her two days to fully open. And there she was hanging majestically with both skirts showing for me as I opened the Living room drapes. This was worth waiting for, even two summers. I believe the slugs or whatever little gobblers were dissecting the leaves were deterred when I finally set her up on a patio table. She is about 5 feet tall anyway , so she is hoisted like a beautiful flag for all to see (well, all who come thru my naturalized woodland jungle to the front door) Thank you, thank you to whoever sent her to me last year and kept encouraging me all this time that I would eventually get a bloom or flush!! I look forward to next summer when my surviving this year rooted babies will bloom along with her. Maybe you can help me with her ID when I get a picture posted.

Sheri ^_^ ^_^
