Tropical Garden # 96

(Zone 1)

Debra: Love the Portodora! LOL, you better get that Ric Rac out of the hanging basket with the Epiphyllum before it gets so big and thorny that you don't want to do it. My Ric Rac needs to be repotted in a bad way but I need to buy some of those gardening gloves used for rose gardening, the type that come up to your elbows ... those thorns hurt! I have a very large Epiphyllum oxypetalum that I need to plant in the ground, the roots are growing out the bottom of the pot. I also have a Majesty Palm that's been in the same pot for a few years now. When I was cleaning the pool deck I moved all of the plants out to the backyard and I accidently knocked over the Majesty palm in the yard and noticed it has a massive amount of roots outside the pot bottom ... looks like one of those jobs where I'm going to have to cut the pot to get the plant out. I am such a bad plant caretaker sometimes ...

PerennialGirl: Love that Juanulloa. The name is a mouth full but it sure is a pretty plant.

GaGirl: Beautiful Catt! Is that one fragrant?

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Pgirl,

There is a possibility of a lack of enough sunlight and/or too much Nitrogen in the fertilizer you used.

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Gagirl,

Did you loose your Monstera Deliciosa Variegata to the cat pee from the Aroid discussion area?

Blackshear, GA

Hello all,

Lin, yes it does have a fragrance. It's one of my favorites.

Homer,
The Monstera pulled through, I repotted it and it seems to be doing fine.

I am slowly pulling everything off the back deck and out of the GH. Starting with the things I know won't be hurt too badly, if we by chance have another cold snap. Supposed to be 48 and 49 the next two nights, but that's ok. My orchids will probably be the last things I take out.

Got very frustrated last week.....I nurse all these plants (hundreds) through the winter and then several days of 90 degree weather and everything dries out because I am not used to watering every day and several things dry up...hopefully not so much they won't come back. But of course it is always my favorite ones that it happens too!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Gosh, Paula, that is a Huge fear of mine, that everything will dry up before it takes off outside. The winds here sure do not help.. I love how you take care of those brugs.. and, that orchid is gorgeous.

Thanks Lin , I like it a lot.

Hoping KayJones will be ready for some plants later this week.. when it warms up, I have a little different EE to send her..
Right now it is so cold the furnace is blasting.. Poor plants.. they don't know what to think when that thing comes on down here..

Good morning, Debra and everyone! Deb, you are spoiling me rotten!

Blackshear, GA

Good Morning Kay,
Did I send you a dmail asking for Brunsfelia paucifloria and moses in a basket? Could you root those for me?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Yes, and I was waiting for the moses to return, but it hasn't. I have one seedling left of the Brunfelsia - it's about 10" tall. To make the most of postage, what else can I send you?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Good morning everyone, I sure look forward to seeing some cool tropical pictures from everyone here by the time I get off of work..

What Lily is this?

Red Oak, TX

Hello Everyone!!

homer1958, I do agree those EE mentioned would look awesome planted together. I might even try to it this spring! I have one small Alocasia Black stem. I am waiting to see if the Colocasia Diamond Head, Fontenesii and the Miranda will come back, they were all left out last winter.

I did not bid on the variegated Philodendron either, I did try on the variegated palm Licuala Mapu, and lost.

RachelLF, thanks, Truetropical is into Amorphophallus, and he is trying to drag me in with him. I like them a great deal but will resist as long as I can.

plantladylin, I find that the plants given to us from friends and family, are the most treasured. Most of my older plants came from my friends, Texasbigleaves and Truetropical, along with a few other DG 's
I am glad that you showed the buds on your rick rack plant, I checked mine and I am sure that I have a few buds as well.
I love the picture of the Gray Catbird, but I would have shooed it away right after the picture. I want all the Loquats for myself, they are very good.

I would like to congratulate you for winning first prize in the Invasive Non-Native Wildlife photo contest, with your photo of the cuban tree frog in the birdhouse.

HollyAnnS, hats off to anyone that is successful in overwintering the A African Mask, your's seems to be thriving.
That was a very good bargain on the peace lily!

Perennialgirl, I have to admit I am a failure at keeping the Juanulloa aurantiaca alive, much less getting them to bloom. I killed the first plant from over watering. This is a second try with a new, bigger plant that came with a few blooms showing. From how healthy your plant looks, it appears you are doing a great job. Hopefully, it will bloom for you this year.

Joeswife, those are some good looking bulbs, is that a A Hilo beauty?
It is amazing how well your EEs are doing down in your basement garden.
Those are very nice caladiums, I would like to see a close up of them.
I did order some caladiums from Caladiums for less but have not received anything so far. I am anxious to get them planted. I ordered mostly Florida beautys.
That is a very big caudex on your Ipomoea Plantesis, it will probably need a trellis soon.

GAGirl1066, the weather for the past few weeks was so mild, the roses, Irises, clematis, azalias and a few other plants are blooming. I let my guard down and I fogot to watch the weather forecast. last night I was running around like a fool covering up plants .
That is a lot of Brugs, I would love to see them all blooming this spring and I hope your plants recover from being dried out.

Kay Jones, I love the Skunk Lily, and will try to find a few to try. My plant is a Clivia caulescens.

Rita,
Do you think you could root me a peice of the white firecracker plant? I have tried to find that around here, but noone has it.

Red Oak, TX

GAgirl1066, that is not a good picture of the firecracker plant, but I wanted to get some pictures up before Joeswife came home from work. lol
It is a yellow firecracker plant, and will be happy to start a plant for you.

Debra: I'm so sorry it's still so cold up your way ... wish I could send some warmth and sunshine. Right now we aren't getting any sunshine but that's okay, we really need the rain! It's been so dry here for so long and there've been brush fires popping up around the county. It's been very warm down our way, mid to upper 80's and on Sunday it hit 91º. I'll wish real hard fro some of the sunshine and warmth to head north!

Rita: Love, Love, Love the big ears in your photo here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=8457957 It makes me wish I had more space for more plants but since I decided to try to downsize a year or so ago I've been real good (so far, LOL) ... but it's sooo hard when I look at all the beauties in everyone's pictues!

I sure agree about plants from family and friends being treasures! I have a Hoya carnosa and Epiphyllum oxypetalum that were given to me by an elderly couple (in their 80's) back in the mid 1970's. They were special folks and though long gone now, I still think about them every time I look at my plants. I also have this dwarf Schefflera in the backyard that my mom gave us in a mixed container arrangement for our 15th anniversary (we've been married almost 42 years now.)

This is a Hoya carnosa I received as a small plant from my elderly friends back in 1976. It was the variegated "Krimson Princess" but has reverted back to the solid green color. It got so large I had to divide it between two pots. It doesn't bloom often (doesn't get enough light) and it hasn't been my favorite plant but still holds a special place because it was a gift from dear friends.

I found this unknown little orchid blooming today:

Well, I need to run some errands ... heading out to Home Depot for another gallon of water sealer for the deck. I moved all the plants and furniture off the wood deck a couple of days ago and my husband pressure washed it for me. I had a gallon of the Thompsons water seal but ran out halfway through the job! I also need to stop by the marine store to buy teak oil for my bench and table in the backyard that got freshly pressure washed!

Have a great day everyone!

The Nuns orchid (Phaius tankervilliae) is finally opening it's buds this season:

Linda, my Nun's Orchid is budded up big time, but still none are open.

Rita,

Nice Alocasia Plumbea!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thanks, Prita. Homer in the summer I do have it in full sun. Do you think the plant has to be older to bloom? How could I tell if it has too much nitrogen?

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

PG, Lots of spindly growth... very dark green in color and a lack of blooms/fruit

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

One of two that I got as one plant from a lady on e-bay... P.Giganteum!

Rita, I love those big leaves too and the color on that hibiscus. I've not caught the Amorphophallus bug yet but it could happen in the future. As of late, my mind is back on the "bog" Aroids.

Lin, congratulations on your win in the contest and that is a very nice Hoya carnosa even though it reverted back to an all green form. I wonder if that is a trait as they age.

Homer, you won big on purchasing from that ebay seller! Absolutely gorgeous and healthy looking Philos. Keep on sharing photos of them as they grow for you.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Homer: AHA! you are the one! LOL

Lin, I too want to congratulate you on the photo contest. You take such great photos.

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Debra; I am the one?

(Zone 1)

Arrrgh! I typed a post and lost it ... durned computer! I think my laptop is about to crash on me again so I've been doing back ups every day, just in case! I can't imagine going back to the days before computers but they sure are frustrating at times ... especially to me with little patience, LOL.

Thanks for the congrats regarding the winning entry in the Non-Native Invasive photo contest. Just for fun I entered a picture of a Cuban Tree Frog (he took up residence in one of my birdhouses a few years ago and lived there for a few weeks before being humanely euthanized.) I never expected to win so it was a nice surprise, and I won a 3 month gift subscription to DG, so they've extended my current subscription for another three months!

Homer: Nice Philo giganteum's! I have a feeling Debra was bidding on that one? I admire you folks who have the patience for e-bay ... I attempted it once a few years ago and was so disappointed when it got down to the last seconds and I was outbid and didn't win whatever it was I was bidding on, LOL. I haven't done e-bay since. I think I'd be better suited to the *Buy it now* option!

Lin, HOW do you keep your Florida room floor SO CLEAN?! Mine looks like a hurricane went through and took it's toll on mine!!!

(Zone 1)

KayJones: I haven't posted any pictures of my Florida room (back porch) ... it's the cement pool deck that you are seeing in the above pictures. I am always barefoot (well .... 90% of the time anyway LOL, and I'm forever tracking dirt/grunge in from outside. For many months you couldn't even see the floor in the Fla room - it was so packed with junk and plants and donation stuff for the thrift store that there was only a little path to get from the door to outside to the wood deck and pool area! I finally got out there last week, sorted stuff, threw stuff out, stored stuff and took a load of things to the thrift store. I still have an old love seat full of dog and cat hair that needs to be cleaned and donated, a little wooden settee to donate, as well as a pile of books to donate to the library, but it's a bit neater and cleaner than it's been in a looong time! I did scrub the tile floor out there two days ago and it already needs it again! I am always barefoot (well .... 90% of the time anyway LOL, and I'm forever tracking dirt/grunge in from outside.

My Fla room/Back Porch:

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Oh, my! It looks gorgeous - now, can you come and organize/clean mine?!!!

(Zone 1)

LOL, it takes all my energy anymore to get stuff done around my little house. When I was young, I was a real neat freak! My house was always spotless, but if company was coming I would still come home from a very long day at work (sometimes 14 or more hours) and stay up until 2:30 a.m. dusting, cleaning and scrubbing floors! Now that I'm older I'm much slower and not as particular. I have a habit of shoving things in drawers and closets ... no lie, if you open a couple of the closets in this house stuff will fall out and bonk you in the head! ^_^ I sometimes think it would be nice to have someone come in to help but I'd rather spend the money elsewhere and as long as I'm physically able I will continue to do it myself. A lady I used to work with has a housekeeper who comes once a week and yet she will clean her house the night before her cleaning lady comes! She says she doesn't want her to think that she and her husband are slobs! That has to be the funniest thing I've ever heard ... I can't imagine doing all that work and then paying someone to come in and clean an already cleaned house!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Linda, likewise - I am constantly 'cleaning' some place in the house, greenhouse or yard, but it seems I'm spinning my wheels! I actually have some empty shelves in my house - did a 'Goodwill' cleaning a couple of months ago, and it's due again. I guess, if I stayed out of the thrift stores and out of my yard, things would be 'cleaner', but then I'd go nuts, so it's a catch-22!

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Plantladylin,

This was a buy it now sight called Annie's Bromeliads and Tropicals. If by chance you go and buy something; let her know it was Drew who bought the P. Giganteum from her that sent you. Please!

(Zone 1)

I understand completely, *** grin ***

Kay, by the way ... what's the weather like up your way? I've been watching the news the past few minutes and we are under Tornado watches until 8 O'clock tonight. It's just cloudy and dreary looking here right now, no thunder, lightning or rain yet, but radar shows it heading this way. We keep having sever weather alerts and it looks like all the nasty weather is coming from your direction up in the panhandle.

After the 1" of rain the other day a few roses are blooming. This one is called 'Paradise':
