Prita, We can all learn something from each other I do believe! Do you have the A.Black Stem (Rubra)? Now those and that C. (black Diamond would look awesome with the yellow of the X.Lime Zinger and an A. Lutea.
Nice Hybrid... Killer Rugosa... I am just now starting to buy "Jewels".
We'll see who learns from who!LOL!
Rita: The Goldfinger plant is very interesting, I like that bloom .. and Oh My Goodness, that Alocasia is Gorgeous!
I don't have anything real interesting to show, just the same old stuff. This is a little Crassula ovata (Jade plant) that I've had for @15 years. It was a decent sized plant when my mom gave it to me but has slowly withered away over the years.
There has been so much pollen down for the past month. I clean the deck and spray all of the plants, and two days later there's a thick layer all over everything again! It's the time of year where there's always something popping into bloom.
There has been so much pollen here the past month! It seems like every two days I'm having to clean the deck and all the furniture and spray the plants down ... turn around and have to do it again. I can't really complain though, at least it's warm. Looks like we may go from a quick spring right into summer ... we've had mid 80's the past week and a half and 90º is predicted for next week!!
I noticed little buds forming on the Selenicereus (Ric Rac Orchid Cactus). The buds are real slow, takes a long time for them to get any size ... the plant always blooms in mid to late May so it will be awhile yet!
Loquats are ripening but I haven't seen any Gray Catbirds around yet. They love the Loquats and usually show up just as the fruit is ripening.
I went back through my pictures files and I guess it is a couple of weeks yet before the Gray Catbird's show up ... this is a photo from mid April last year of one of them enjoying the fruit of my neighbors many Loquat trees.
One of the plants producing lots and lots of pollen here right now is the Sweet Viburnum ... fragrance is really nice so I guess that should make up for the pollen, LOL.
Rita, very nice A. Melo/rugosa and yes, that Alocasia was from your friend and it looks like he done another nice cross from the seedling you showed on the other thread. I hope he is still growing some of the plants he adored.
Homer, I am looking forward to learning some growing tips from you as well and for those of us who are growing or trying to grow some of the "jewels", need to compare notes on what to do or not do in the future. I do know that there are some people that are able to grow these "jewels" with ease but they have the right environment to do so.
Lin, great shot of a Catbird and please post a picture from your Ric Rac when you get those blooms.
Lin, can I say something about your ricrac orchid? AWWWWW....
That is just the bestest picture I have ever seen of one of those with a bud.
And your sweet viburnum is BEAUTIFUL. I have a viburnum outside from a DG'r here, and when she asked me if it was leafing, I had to go out and see, since I thought it had died.. But . Despite the odd weather here, it has leaf buds, and I am thrilled.
This is a picture of my first trade from a DG'r that wasn't sending me Brugs or MG's.. and wherever she is, I sure have enjoyed all these.. since they all managed to live.. This is dated October 28th, 2008.
I am pretty sure that shortly after that , Rita sent me some cool things I had Never seen. I didn't take pictures of the box , but everything except the varigated blue hibiscus and we will see about the rangoon creeper, is still alive.I had never heard of FireSpike until I came to this forum..and now I have to expore the Alocasia Rugosa. Yours is beautiful.

Homer, while Joe and I were out today, we went to my favorite store called Hillside Feed and Seed, a very old family run business in Wichita.
It is tiny, well anyway, they have three types of EE bulbs for sale, so, after seeing yours, I decided I was going to learn from you...
These were not the Walmart sized bulbs I am used to getting, and they were just tagged" Giant Elephant ear" and Black stem EE

While being curious about why a plant was failing, I upended the pot.. it was not good..but I bet that catbird would have loved these..
This is the nicest most non gross picture I could post, but boy, did I ever get a great close up of these root moochers.. I told Joe, I was dissapointed because it was from a friend, and in new Bagged potting soil that I used for this pot.

Very happy to report that although it is very cold we didn't get any of the snow. I spent a good bit of yesterday outside cleaning up flower beds. Raking debris and spreading leaf mulch. So I spent the morning dividing my variegated peace plant. I picked it up for a few $$ can't remember 2 or 4 at the end of the Flower Show last month. I wanted to divide it and the roots were so solidly compacted that I took it out of the pot and let it soak over night in a bucket of water. Then used a hook to work the roots apart. Worked really well and I now have 3 nice plants.
Still trying to get a decent pic of my African Mask Alocasia this is the best I have so far. It isn't looking too bad came thru the winter storage pretty good for me.

Looks like a Colocasia Esculenta on the right and an Alocasia Rubra (black stem) on the left.

It looks sooo familiar and at first I thought Anthurium, then I thought maybe Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen) ... but with my old age brain fog I really don't know what it is. It's always nice to have surprises pop up, isn't it? Please let us know when it decides what it wants to be, LOL. Wow, those EE tubers are HUGE! I bet you can't wait to get them planted. Eeeew! Those are creepy, crawly things from that plant!
HollyAnn: Your variegated Spath's are beautiful! I have one that I've had for years and the past two winters it took big hits from our miserable cold temp's but it's recuperating nicely. Hopefully at some point it will be a vision of it's former self. Very pretty African Mask too ... I thought I had one around here somewhere but it must be dormant if it's still here and alive as I haven't seen it since last summer.

Holly, what a wonderful thing to keep your plants going thru winter, I am glad I am not the only one who is willing to care for tropicals, as I am sure there is a reward from those plants for us all. You varigated peace lilly is awsome.
Lin, I am glad to see how you have your RicRac cactus plant in a basket..
I "thinned" my monster out.. But still need to get the "ric rac" plant out of this basket..
Now to get this pot of Starts of Epis in a basket or something..any ideas?
Deb, your noid plant looks like Pickeral weed to me - it's a common water weed here in Florida:

mjs, it sounds like your having a good time with re-visiting family and a state that gets snow;) I'm sure you are ready to head back to Florida by now.

Prita awesome blooms on your Juanulloa aurantiaca! I have one that I've overwintered for about 3 or 4 years but haven't got it to bloom. What am I doing wrong?
Oh, the curio.. I use it for my seedlings as they harden off, the mirrors are cracked, the wooden face off the middle front, but the lights still work and it seems to make things get used to being in open air fresh out of the seed houses.. :)
But hay, KAYJONES, if you want it, you just come on over and get it! ;D

Lynn, I hadn't seen RicRac blooms, They sure are beautiful.
MJS, I used to live on the Eastern Shore, snow this time of year is wet and cold (feels colder than snow in less moist air). It was 89 in JAX yesterday and we were enjoying the pool. :-)
Sadly, my fav nursery down there was mobbed with customers this past weekend and they had fewer trops than they usually do. I think the others got to them before I could. LOL I did come home with a bunch of lantana 'Anne Marie' plants and a jatropha integerrima, my old one has not shown any new growth yet this season.
It is raining buckets here today, it started yesterday and has not stopped. Since we hadn't seen any in many weeks this is a blessing for the garden.

Wasn't it you that asked me about the nurseries in Jesup and Baxley? Did you bu any chance get to either one on your trip? Can you remember the name of the Jesup one? We went over there the other day for a tennis match and I saw a sign that said Tyre's GH. I will have to look back at your dmail and figure it out. I want to go!!
The above photo is my brugs I have been taking out. I have added about 10 more to that pile. I hope to plant them in the ground this year and will build a temporary GH around them when it gets cold. LOL At least that is my plan.
