Brugmansia seedlings

Hamilton, OH

these seedlings are doing so well, soon I'll have to pot them up, most of them are Langenbushers cross, they should be interesting to watch
grow as soon as they are in the ground

It's good to be back and in the swing of things again...I hope to start a whole new set of seedlings this summer/fall when i return from NY....that is of course unless these Samba Dancer x Rosalie pods ripen before I leave at the end of June...then I'll start my plantings up in NY this summer and bring seedlings back with me...fingers crossed!

Hamilton, OH

Gary, those are some nice pods, there should be some great Brugs, from that cross, it's so exciting to have lots of seeds
Debra, it won't be long now, then we can put our Brugs in the ground
Retta, those seedpods are where the Blooms were pollenated, by the Spinx moth or by hand, then you get seedpods, hope that helps, we had a Beautiful day yesterday, it got up to 72 degrees, this morning it's 60 degrees, I have my window open
13 more days till Spring, yippee

Elizabeth

Council Bluffs, IA

thank you elizabeth, that sure does tell me more.
i see i still have a lot to learn.
yes it will be great when spring does arrive, can't go by the calender, march 20 is the 1st day of spring, its going to be 54 here today and rest of the week
hugs

Retta, that is better than those 20's and 30's we were having earlier, isn't it????

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

It's funny because many people think that because i live in a subtropical, frost free zone that i can grow anything...well let me tell you after many failures I have learned that there are brugs that do require the dormancy and cooling off period...you would be surprised. Some of the brugs that you northerners can grow like weeds in a pot just wither and die here in the heat of the summer or the frost free winter. Daydreams is a good example. I grew her up north in New york one summer and she was amazing....brought her home with me in the fall....she didn't last one full season and the big blooms i saw in NY were dwarf and stunted here in florida....trial and error is the only way to determine what will grow for you in your zone...learn from other peoples mistakes so that you don't have to learn a personal, expensive lesson.

Council Bluffs, IA

charleen, yes it is,i have been out side as much as i can, gettin the leaves up that i use in the winter to protect some plants.

i really appreciate all the tips i get,i'm a newbie, and it is trial and error for me at this time.
hugs to all retta

Maya has bloom buds ( I call them okras) down here in the basement garden..
It was 82 yesterday and 72 last night and woke up to 47 and gray cold winds, no rain as they have been predicting so far..
Still no surety of frost, so not lifting leaves for compost until April 5th here..
I scattered some seeds around in hopes of rain, tho.

Debra, please let me know when you put your brugs out for the summer. Then I will know it is safe for me to put mine out too. I'm going to follow your lead on them. Did you remember my request for replacements on ones I had lost? I had a couple I noticed the other day the leaves were all wilted. I watered it but the leaves withered and fell off. I'm hoping it will put out more.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Be careful not to over water, and make sure there is really good drainage, and in a lot of light. The withering is normal, the ones I have dumped and inspected are sending new growth. From below the soil at the base, so don't give up on them, let them go dry before watering at least two inches, but in my case I have to go four inches cuz the pots are topped with peat and it seems dry. when I see withering, I stop watering. These are in a closet down in the brug room, this is star dancer pod 2 and star dancer pod 4 from seeds I got two years ago from the lady that grew star dancer.

Gary, I guess the only perfect place for Brugs is where it's 80 degrees alll year, it's nice that you have 2 zones to grow them in
Retta, I am only glad I can help you out, but Gary is right, it's all trial & error, that's all I had when I first started growing my Brugs, back before I had a computer, there is so much more information out now
Charlene, this weather is so much nicer, now, I can even open my window to air out the house
Debra, you plants always look great, you have a wonderful basement Garden

Elizabeth

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Good morning, Everyone
we had such nice weather the last couple days, but now we're going to have a cold front come in, it's a good thing my garage is cleaned out, it took most of the day yesterday, but it's done, you can actually put a car in there now
today will be a good day to bring some more of my Brugs upstairs

retta
ps,saw some brugs i would love to get my hands on,
charles grimaldi-deep yellow
adeline-sorta pink
just saw picks of them.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

I have heard that grimaldi is fantastic. I'm a little concerned about the yellow brugs now because of that disease they get that can spread to other brugs.

Hamilton, OH

Good Morning everyone
Retta, did you put some Brugs in the ground, already? Girl you're way ahead of me, I usually wait till the first of April, that's pushing the zone here, but when the leaves are out on some trees, I figure it's pretty safe, there's a beautiful magnolia tree
a couple streets over that is covered in buds, yesterday we had a hail storm, it wasn't as bad as they predicted
we have the same forecast as you do, the high 40's today with a possibility of snow showers very light though
Crit, I want a Red Brug or a lilac color one, I did have a great color yellow one about 3 years ago, it got that disease, I had to throw it away, to save all the other ones
Elizabeth

Council Bluffs, IA

oh no elizabeth,i only have 2 and its to cold here.like you said, our weather is the same.
but your temp for today is better than ours,41 high today and expecting a dusting of snow
one day this week.
i think we have the same taste in colors,i like red and purple, lilac.
hello everyone,i'm not ignoring you,i miss you all.
have a wonderful day
retta

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

I would love to have some red and purple, lilac. I read that there are some yellow that are more resistant to the disease, and I think grimaldi might of been one of them.

Council Bluffs, IA

well lets hope we can find some, crit
retta

Hamilton, OH

Crit, Tropical Sunset is a good yellow one, it will be a long time before we have a lilac or purple colored Brug, there are double purple Datura's, they're related to the Brugs, the difference is they Bloom up, I have had those in the past, you just
treat them as annuals, & save the seed, the closest I have to a Red Brug is Superspot, when the Bloom starts to dry up it
looks kinda Red, but mostly it Blooms dark Pink
Retta, I am so glad you're waiting to put your Brugs in the ground, I did bring some up from the basement, I put them in my enclosed back porch, I have a neat little electric fireplace out there, I turned it on last night, it is cold here, it's only going to be in the upper 40's looks like for about a week
Elizabeth

Council Bluffs, IA

no elizabeth,i love plants to much,
i don't like them dying on me.
suppose to rain/snow mix here tomarroe and sat,
then start warming up again.
they changed our high to 48.sure glad but still cold.
retta

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Thanks plantlover, that sounds good. I have some of the double purple datura's planted. Also the yellow ones and I have the Moon Flowers. I'm making a moon garden this year.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Got down to 29 here last night, and up to 50 something today, hailed pea size tonight for about 3 minutes, windier than all get out. We are not going to plant any thing not cold hardy until after April the 5th here. May wait until the 12th, who knows. In the 30's for lows and highs in 40's to 50's next week.
That is a nice Iris. Mine are just now coming up, daffodils are all blooming, tulips next.
Hugs to you all. Hi Charleen, good to see you, now where is Dee?

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Love that color Charleen. I have one purple tulip blooming. Something has eaten the tops off of some of the leaves. Jonquils are so pretty this year, and had some hyacinths come up I don't remember from last year. Iris are looking better this year since I thinned them. Hope they bloom, I had like 3 flowers last year from 2 beds. The 3rd bed has been in a year now so hope they bloom. I dug them from the old house when we moved.

Council Bluffs, IA

waa,waa,we got snow;(
iris,jonquals,daffs,columbines,corabells,tulips,coming up
but still covered.hope this does,nt hurt them.
very pretty charleen.i like that.i just have some rust colored
blue and yellow.if they bloom this year.
elizabeth,hows your weather?
hi debra, our weather is about the same to.
so no planting here either until all danger of frost or snow,is gone.
hugs to all
retta

Hamilton, OH

Good morning Everyone
Retta, we have the same forecast, the weatherman is saying snow this week end maybe an inch of the stuff
Crit, I'll be so glad when we get rid of the white Stuff, it shouldn't hurt whats already Blooming
Charlene, it's great to see you, I agree Debra, where's Dee, that's a pretty iris you've got there, Hey wait till you see what I got yesterday, not a plant, but about the neatest thing I have ever seen, I will take a photo in awhile, you'll love it

Elizabeth

Hamilton, OH
