Spring growth

Right down the road...

i used to work at the York Theatre, down under Citicorp - 54th and Lex. There's and Italian restaurant just up Lex called Fresh Basil - used to go there all the time - cheap for that part of town... :)

I am very happy to say that a rose I rooted last year, then have kept in the garage all winter looks like it is getting some new growth. It is black magic, a deep red velvety rose that makes a great cut flower. I wanted more for cutting and hadn't seen it to buy any more.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that is great debi!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Great news about your rose!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great, Deb!

Thomaston, CT

Is it a tea rose, Deb?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

How exciting, Debi! I get such a thrill when my cuttings take. What method did you use on your rose? I still haven't had much luck with roses or hibiscus yet. I decided to plant one of the branches from my yellow elder when I decided to make it a tree instead of a shrub, and it has lots of new leaves on the cutting now. I will bring it north with us to baby it for the summer before I put it in the ground. Most things down here work great if you just stick them in the ground. I think it's the light, sandy soil here. I don't use Rootone or anything much down here.

Good news, Deb!

Great Debi!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks All.
Louise it was funny because I tried rooting a few, and kept checking them every day or so, and they weren't rooting. Then I stuck one more in a pot before going on vacation for 2 weeks, and when I came home it was rooted. Ignoring it worked.

I've rooted a lot of hardy hibiscus as long as I have a small piece of the woody base on the stem - started doing that after I accidently broke off a new stem, so stuck that in a pot, and it rooted. I've given away about 6 of them so far.

Ahhhhh, must consider some ignoring when I get to the farm, Debi! Good strategy!

Has anyone tried the "new" gels for rooting cuttings? They sound interesting to me. I saw some in one of the gardening catalogs I got. I'll be bringing the catalogs all north in an extra suitcase dedicated to garden literature. :)... At least that's my plan....we'll see if I can squeak it past Hank. I already have two trays of green matter that have to fit in as well. No room at the Inn!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the only reason I haven't tried them .. was the price Louise

Thomaston, CT

Haven't seen them, but would love to try one.....

Hallowell, ME

Seen them advertised on TV. I'd like to try them but don't know if they are for a "one time" or multiiple rootings. Like to see them in local outlets.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the one site I was reading said it can be used again... but in the quantity of cuttings I take.. it would not be feasible for me doing coleus.. since they can root without anything really... I wouldn't bother.. but for other plants I would love to try it

this site says you can put 3 cuttings in each cell

I've never tried them either, looks interesting.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

would like to try the black & blue saliva in there.. hit and miss with reg rooting hormone .. and I like the fact that you can see when the roots are formed

Celeste, even though you start late, you catch up quick!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The lily noses are next to the foundation of the house on the south side too.

Pixie has lift off. Great to see.

onewish1, you reticulated iris look perfectly right. Not planted too deep. I am heading out to see the glory that this fine day will be bringing out. I expect a lot. Patti

Thomaston, CT

And we expect some great photos, Patti!

South Hamilton, MA

crocuses are still hanging on. pinky violet species tulips have opened as they are plnted next to a brick porch.

Oops, no photos today. I Cleaned out the shed which is an icky job. I found lots of dead voles. yuck. DH power washed then bleached the deck and outside furniture. I went to the nursery and did some damage while he went to launch the work boat which was just hauled for spring cleaning. My knee was too sore to do any digging, but hopefully I will plant and photograph stuff tomorrow. I did spy some choice stuff out since yesterday, and noticed some damage to an almost blooming primula............grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Patti

Thomaston, CT

Uh oh.....voles? I was working by my 2 totally eaten rhodos today....very angry at those deer!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I looked at a Rhododendron in the sale pile today at the nursery, but I know the deer just destroy them on Nantucket, except in town and maybe even there. Patti

Thomaston, CT

Both of these rhodos were 6' tall.....one bud left. But they didn't touch the ones growing by the house....thankful for that. One of them was rooted by Doug from the 1st house we lived in when we got married, & I'm very attached to it. It's very, very pale pink.....fading to white.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yay Celeste!!!
Yay for the dead voles...boo for having to find them in your shed, Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not sure this is considered spring growth..but they are annuals blooming in the house.

Calibrachoa I think it might be "Can Can"
