Spring spending spree part 4

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - very low prices for spring! Radioactive???

Thomaston, CT

Glow-in-the-dark shrubs....not a bad idea!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

They just pull things that aren't up to their standards as they notice them and put them by the gate to sell off super cheap. In the fall they had a really big 10.00 pile which of course, I raided and all survived the winter and look good. None glowing yet.

We have gotten some great trees from them over the years too on sale when they have their 20% off sales. Prices are high due to cost of getting them here and Island expenses in general, but a good nursery and wonderful people working there. I do buy a few things at full price just to be a good customer. Patti

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

maybe Bill didn't get your order... I got an invoice a while ago

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Jen, in my day, bullies did do things face to face. I'm not up on what makes people bullies, but I think it's a need to control and dominate and make them feel better about themselves, as I think they feel very small and scared inside and need to make others feel afraid so that they will not be as scared themselves.

Great idea on using the plastic trash cans, Celeste.

Great sale, Patti!

I'm going back to Spillaine's today to get more $2 pots of perennials. Today I'm getting hostas. I didn't get any last time. I only have $20 to spend, so will be getting 10 pots. I feel very fortunate that I can get some nice perennials at such a low price.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hmm, that's weird, Allison. He sent me an acknowledgment after I placed the order.

Thomaston, CT

Good luck with the hostas, Karen!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I made my trip there. Came home with 5 pots of hosta. Don't remember now all the names. I remember Orange Marmalade, Hoosier Harmony. I also got 2 roses, climbing White Dawn and one of the disease resistant shrub ones called Snowdrift. Those will go in my white/yellow garden. I have an arbor in there for the white rose to climb up.

Orange Marmalade is one i've been eyeing too.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have orange marmalade and it is very nice!

Thomaston, CT

Good buys, Karen.....the roses sound very pretty....

Hallowell, ME

Check out www.greenhousemegastore.com for cheap grow bags! 5 & 10 gallon size for a buck apiece.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

ordered a few geranium's this weekend - a new hampshire to replace on that the voles may have eaten - and two black beauty's that sound familiar to the ones joanne ordered - black beauty was good down to zone 2-3.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Voles? I have vole holes all through one bed....looks like he ate a few lilies bulbs. All that were left were a few scales :(

It's also possible those are possum snout holes. We have holes like that all over our yard here, and we were wondering what they were when Hank caught a possum in the act of searching for grubs inside our puppy yard before dawn one morning. The girls love to sniff for them, which doesn't thrill us because possums are carriers of leptospirosis.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No, this is right next to the house and there are tunnels everywhere. As soo as the snow melted you could see the damage. I wish it was possums, Brian could just shooot them.

Thomaston, CT

Didn't know they made such large holes......my chippie tunnels like that! I found my first lily nose today, & on it was my first red lily beetle of the season.....and I have no spray left.....tomorrow I'll get some, but it's going to rain until Thurs.....by then the noses will have been chewed! Bought some pansies today.....

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh the Chippies are doing the tunnel thing too..DH caught one coming out of a hole by the side of the house. He then proceeded to munch on the cedar shingles and that was it for DH...out came the gun!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow, Frank, those are cheap! Can't beat those prices for grow bags.

Oh, I got hosta 'Great Expectations' in that bunch on Sunday, too.

Celeste, I've had voles eat lily bulbs before. This year they got several things in my gardens. While cleaning out one of my sales areas today I notice that 4 large pots of hostas had been eaten. One was partially eaten, but they didn't finish it, so it's still good.

Marilyn, GRRRRRRR!!!! on the lily beetles. I have seen some coming up here, but not beetles yet. Get that Monterey Garden Insect Spray. It really works great!

A gun for chippies!!!! Oh no!!!!! They're too small!!!!

Karen

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nope, they are larger than the bullet...thats all that counts.

Something, if not voles, or chippies has eaten not just lily bulbs but some reticular iris's and my golden crocus bulbs seem to be missing too!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh no... so sorry Celeste... it was like Christmas today!!!!!!... the package from Polly, Rosy Dawn and the cuttings from the NC Farms co-op all came today!!!.. I got about 1/2 of the coleus stuck... and calling it quits for tonight.. I am beat.. so glad my co-worker and I went to the Chinese buffet for lunch .. was able to skip dinner

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool!! Like being a kid.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow! I couldn't have handled getting all that at once!

Celeste, sorry about the loss of your bulbs. That's a real bummer.

Karen

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I got my coleus cuttings too...same here Allison got tired of sticking them. Rosy Dawn should be here next week.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

stick a damp.. not wet paper towel in the baggie... just a small piece.. keeps them good for a while

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nice Allison! Got bulbs from Polly today too..Thank you Polly! :)
Got an email from Rosey Dawn they have shipped and a email from Lily Nook they have shipped my bulbs too.

By the look of the holes left by what ever is eating my lilies.....I won't have to dig any holes now will I? Well I guess that solves the problem of where im going to put this new batch of bulbs.

Hallowell, ME

Pix - sometimes squirrels will eat the bulbs as well as groundhogs especially if there's a little growth on top.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

DH has been shooting them too, so hopefully they will stop coming around as much. Need to let the dogs out more but the reason he's been shootingthe critters is the ticks on them. You can actually see them on the ears and heads of these little rodents. It was a harsh winter and the ticks needed something to latch onto I guess.

Thomaston, CT

Oh, yuck.....ticks are the worst! Thanks, Karen, for the name of the spray....I'm getting it!

Naugatuck, CT(Zone 5a)

I also found my first red beetle yesterday, luckily I was wearing gloves, bye bye beetle!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Cannas came today!
Cleopatra
Lucifer
Rosemond Cole
Picasso

Thomaston, CT

Will you plant them outside now, Ronnie, or wait? Dem, sorry that you are suffering, also!

Mount Laurel, NJ

Wow, just read that message about the girl suicide over bullying. That is so awful. My grandchildren have been getting some bullying. I think I'll talk to them about learning to ignore it and not letting it bother them. Not sure how successful that will be, but how awful that it bothers teen agers to that extent. I know she is not the only one. This happens all too often. Obviously we need to crack down on bullying, but we also need to try to teach our young ones how to handle it. (And by that, I don't mean punching back, but just not letting it bother them so much). Wish me luck.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Much easier said than done. Many kids have been picked on for years. Some have personalities that allow them to ignore it. Many do not. More important is to get them to reach out for help.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I'll wait until mid May Marilyn, they like the heat.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I usually start mine inside to give them a jump start

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

You know how Michigan Bulb Co is one of those first companies you order from as a beginner gardener??? I wouldn't order from them if you paid me, I still get their catalogs...don't know why haven't ordered from them in years.

Just read this in there for succulents "be one of the first to add these easy care beauties to your patio"
One of the first??? Really? like NO ONE else grows succulents

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

this is your last chance to get $20 off $40

no, this is your last chance to get $20 off $40

no, this is your last chance to get $20 off $40

how many times do they send you that?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

And why do they send you so many catalogs? I'm not sure I get theirs, but I get others that I swear send you at least one catalog a month. What a waste of money!
