Spring spending spree part 4

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I watched the news and someone in a local high school started a facebook page to bully girls, facebook shut the page down after the school contacted them. Is it the anonymity of the internet that makes bullying more prevalent? I don't remember so much when I was a teenager.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks everyone, I really do appreciate it.

Victor you are so right....my oldest daughter Nichole sat both her girls down this week and had a long talk with.

Debi im so sorry, it's so hard to find the right words and no amount of them will bring your co-workers real comfort....but being there is so important.

Thank you Patti, love the iris and it's name, it's what the world needs more of..harmony.

Robin im sorry that happened to you but im glad you finally told your parents what happened!

Karen I am also sorry you were bullied and glad you had such loving parents who looked out for you.
That was part of this little girls problem.....her parents (mostly her Mother) brushed away her depression as teenage adolesence. She has always loved and worked w/animals, volunteered her time at the Christian Radio Station on Sundays after church, and had been a on-the-move teen. I guess things have been going down hill for a while this school year and her interest started to wain, no excitement in her step or looking forward to the things she did before and was avoiding school as often as possible. Her best friend noticed it and even mentioned it to her Mother. This past weekend "H" (i'll refer to her as 'H' from here on) had a really bad time, hit an all time low and didn't even want to leave her room. On Monday she told her Mom she was sick so she could stay home knowing she would be totally alone. Her best friend was worried....just didn't have a good feeling so she called "H"' on her cell while on her break at school. No answer. So she called "H"'s home phone #...no answer. She thought that maybe "H" was still sleeping as it was only 9:30am and decided to go to class and call again later. About 2 hours later she called again...no answer and now she had a very bad feeling. So she called "H"'s Mother at work and told her...."H"'s Mom again brushed it off. Said "H" prob. had her cell phone shut off and just wanted to left alone, don't worry she'll be fine. This was even after "H"'s best friend told her Mom about the suicide talk!!! Well her best friend just couldn't believe it, had no car of her own to go to the farm and check so she called the State Police and told them. They took it serious and went out and checked on her. They found "H" hanging in the doorway as soon as they walked up to the house.

Now you know where i've been all week...in a dark place with not alot of light. I didn't like but it gave me insight (on a much smaller scale) of what "H" must of felt like x 100.
I think there were signs, and this might of been prevented. I think that her friend was not taken seriously and her Mother needed a slap. Now however, it's to late and useless to slap Mom...she has to live with the "what if's" for the rest of her life. I hope "H"'s best friend knows she did everything she could, and doesn't feel guilty but I know she does.....
I saw her post on facebook last night. So now I pray for her, and hope she can overcome the sorrow and grief and enjoy her life for herself, and for "H" too.

Celeste, sending you a hug.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Deb, needed.

South Hamilton, MA

So sorry Celeste. Parents really have to try & talk to their children, even if kids don't talk to adults. I think kids will think 'meddling', but try. they might remember that you tried. Even talking to another adult, which sometimes they prefer, might help.

Hallowell, ME

Celeste I can't express my feelings for you deeply enough. I only know that our Lord and Savior has that young lady in his arms now and I hope that may give some help as you deal with this. I pray for all of you here on DG every night. Frank

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you Iris and Frank, and yes Frank it helps a great deal to know she is indeed safe now in his arms.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Oh Celeste (((♥♥♥)))

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Such a sad and tragic story, Celeste. No one should ever feel that way. Now that gardening season is nearly upon you, I hope you will be able to find solace in doing what you love most.

Karen

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Ronnie & Karen, im itching to get out in the sunshine and plant. Of course as Frank said earlier in a thread we still have snow although less and less each day. However, that only means one thing here in Maine...MUD SEASON!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

sad story celeste

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow, Celeste. The details make it even worse. How awful. Seems there are always signs that were missed. Did you know 'H' personally? So sorry.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

{{{{BIG HUGS}}}}}} dear friend. words aren't enough.

Thomaston, CT

Just horrible....guilt all around! The depression was obviously severe, but sometimes family can't or won't see it! Prayers for all of you......

Naugatuck, CT(Zone 5a)

((((((((HUGS))))))))))) all around!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Bill, Robin, Jan and Dem.

No Victor, I knew who she was because she goes to DD's Church. DD had pointed her out because "H" was really good with the kids and has the same round face, big blue eyes and almost white-blonde hair like Oryanna. DD had always said she thought Ory would look alot like "H" when she grew up. You can imagine how shook up DD is.

Considering these trough planters for the patio.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

after going though that with my nephew... I know no words can make it ok Celeste... but hugs & prayers to you, family & friends.. you can always call if you need a shoulder

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Got my Fairweather order yesterday. I'm completely impressed with the size of the perennials; however, I think they sent them way too early! I don't have much of anything popping up yet - now I've got astilbe, daylilies, etc. that are about a month ahead of everything here. What should I do? Will they be okay to plant?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I thought you can request a shipping date. I would wait a bit in your area.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I don't remember being prompted for a date. I guess I assumed they would be shipped at the appropriate time for my zip code. Do I need to put them outside during the day and bring them in every night? Or will they be okay in my garage without sunlight for a week or so? I'm heading to the west coast in a week. Somehow I doubt my husband will want to coddle the plants in my absence...

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Glad our mud season is done. I will be doing lots of work in the yard this weekend. Will also go back to Spillaine's where I got the $2 perennials. I want to get some of those hostas, all of which sell for about $10-$18 each normally.

Those are nice planters, Victor.

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

There is a comments area. Yes, I would do that. Should be fine to plant soon.

South Hamilton, MA

Some of them could be potted temporily, although they would need watering. Our 2 plants are being shipped the day after we come home for our trip, always best to discuss that sort of thing. I realize that it doesn't help you this yr.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

These look cool too. Anyone try them yet?

http://www.gardeners.com/Potato-Bin/GrowBags_Cat,36-629RS,default,cp.html

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Never tried them. Saw an article on growing potatoes just today in a gardening mag, maybe Organic Gardening, and those were shown, along with other methods.

Karen

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Still in my prayers Celeste, really sad that the mom didn't heed all the warnings but she now has to live with that fact.
I think it's more prevelant with the internet and cell phone because the bully is actually really a WIMP and won't try anything face to face.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I have looked at some grow bags at Wegmans, they are canvas and square, but decided to go with a raised bed instead. I do grow potatoes in pots.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Jen, and im sorry for your loss.

Victor, I bought them my first time growing taters.....they tore by the second season. Now I go to Wal-Mart and buy a plastic trash can for $9.99. I have Brian shoot some holes in the bottom and sides of it for me and I plant my taters in there. This year will be my 3rd year using them.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you know... when Lance from VA was here.. I mentioned doing my potatoes in the garbage can.. he made a point that made me stop and think.. since they didn't grow well last year.. but did good the year before with all the rain.. they might have cooked in there before they had a chance to grow... uninsulated above ground.. cooking in a black plastic can

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Maybe because mine are in sun from sunrise until around 2. Then in shade until 6 when the sun comes around the house it hits them again for an hour or so before sunset.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Mine did better when in afternoon shade too

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

think I might move them.. this year.. just trying to think where

Thomaston, CT

I'd like to try sweet potatoes....wonder if they'd grow well in a bin....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I wonder if that nice nursery close to my house has seed potatoes .. I didn't order any this year.. kind of discouraged after last year

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

woo hoo... just got notice my Rosy Dawn order was shipped today!!!!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool. Never heard from Bill about my caladium order. Never sent an invoice either. Weird.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I hit a little sale at the Nantucket nursery, Surfing Hydrangea as they were thinning out poor specimens. They looked more than fine to me especially at 10.00 each.

2 Viburnum triobum Wentworth instead of 48.00 each they were 10.00 each.
1 Viburnum tomentosum Summer Snowflake 10.00 sale instead of 34.00
1 Syringa meyeri Palibin 10.00 instead of 44.00
1 Broussonetia papyrifera Golden Shadow sale 10.00 instead of 65.00

Fell in love with an expensive shrub, Corylopsis spicata or Spike Winterhazel that was full size, so I would want a smaller one at a smaller price. Anyone growing it?

I also bought 2 Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire fo4 34.00 each 3' high
and 1 Heuchera Dolce Licorice at 16.00

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

nice haul patti - need to get over to mahoney's and see what they have in the discount section

Thomaston, CT

Lucky find, Patti.....sometimes the smaller plants do better!
