Plant Propagation part XXIIX based on my own experience

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

JB congrats on all the orders. I got out and spotted the creeping phlox was starting to bloom a neat little pale blue flower. unfortunately the camera is not any help with the color I tried it with no flash and still looks white. its a nice pale lavender/blue. Looks like I have about25 ready to go, but i need to check and make sure they are all rooted out also as they were cuttings last fall and I do not want to sell anythig before its ready.

I have had a couple of inquirees about different hostas and I have 1 set of dwarf that should have sold by now on ebay.

Have a great day

I have some good news to report. My doctor in Ca. is making a referral for me to have my foot X-rayed and to see a doctor in the Podiatry department. I have to call in a couple of days and arrange the apppointments which means another trip to Ca. sometimes fairly soon but it will be worth it if they can help with the foot pain.

Also, I've forgotten to say that I have wild white daturas blooming here along with a couple of wild blue mystery plants. AND a mango which I planted from seed my first summer here is in bloom.

I'm doing some puttering in the area that I call my little back yard. I have the seed planting area in good shape and I'm trimming trees and neatening up.

Tony did a lot of cleaning and straightening in the entry area. He really helps to keep the place in some kind of order. I've been told that some of the "trailer park" people refer to my place as "Sanford and Son." I've thought of making a sign just to bug them a bit but haven't yet. Saw a picture of a smiley face made out of tire parts and showed it to neighbor Dana as her husband Tom has a big aversion to used tire stuff - I said I was thinking of putting one on my front gate where he'd see everytime he came up our little road. People who think I'm bad should know even half the things I don't do!

Dave, I could use Roundup here but the aloes grow so freely that I'm going to try them first and see if it helps keep the Bermudda grass in check. The aloes are really pretty when they bloom and the hummingbirds love them. I don't think I've ever had so many birds here. They gobble up the food I put out as well as whatever rice the dogs don't eat. I've really been noticing all the songs and other calls. I like watching the hawks but am glad to provide protection from them for other birds and animals.

Katie, That is good news. Trust me, when your feet hurt, you whole body seems to join the party and ache too. ( at least mine did.)

Sharon, Please email me your address again. I am trying to get everything together so I can mail it out next week. I have found my pink oxalis, purple shamrock and white shamrock. My iron cross shamrock hasn't come up yet. I will send some of all 3 if you like. Did you want anything else.
I know it is hard for Vern to let you do things he wants to help with. It drives Burk crazy when he cannot do things to help and when he thinks I don't "need" his help it is really sad.

Evelyn, I am so sorry about your cat. Mine is pushing 18 and is now blind in 1 eye and not doing too well at times, but she still controls the 2 dogs and lets them know she is the Queen, and they are to stay out of her way. LOL
In my greenhouse, I started lots of hibiscus ( hardy), echinacea, rudbeckia, flowering vines, daturas and odd perennials. I combined everything else in my seed box that I wasn't going to plant specifically for an area into a baggie and scattered them throughout my beds.
It will be interesting to see what comes up and grows. If I like it, I can find it a permanent home and if it reseeds then I just let them grow so the beds look full. I like lots of flowers.

Dave, right now I am working on the echinacea. I will have some ajuga, coreopsis grandiflora nana and some dwarf black mondo grass in a few weeks. The dwarf coreopsis I have now and it is beginning to bloom. I have tons of little stokesia coming up, ( I must have missed those seed pods.) I am growing lots of vines and tropical things too. I will take an inventory and let you know what I will have, but most of my things won't be ready for about 4 weeks. I hope that isn't too late for your season. I am planning to seed all of next year's perennials this summer. That way, they can grow through the fall and winter and be ready ( or at least a little hardier) in the spring.
If there is something particular you want, let me know and I will see what I can do. My growing season will last until late november.

Jnette, Did I promise you anything besides the lantana and camellia cuttings?

JB, let me know when you are ready for the orchid cacti and camellia cuttings.

Lee, Where are you? You still have snow?

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Linda, the three would be good. I do not think I need anything else. I have also promised myself that all boxes would leave this week, weather taken into consideration.

Dave, Las Vegas is surrounded by mountains and is actually in a large bowl. So when the winds roar down the mountains, they can really pick up. We had gusts up to 60 mph. The problem is they come in to the valley twisting. They will blow one way and then turn around and blow the opposite. They just twist the trees around and then take them down.

Jnette, Vern's son, Brian, can walk, with a pronounced limp because one leg is shorter than the other. He has full use of his right arm but his left hand is closed in a tight fist. So he can drive a standard car. We purchased another small SUV because they are higher and he can see better what is going on in front of him. We were at the DMV for 5 hours because the seller did not sign one place on the title. I signed his name out of sight., It was just stating what the odometer mileage was. But then we had to go get another number and wait another 2 hours. He was very excited and did not stop talking. And when he was not talking, he was checking his papers.

We went in separate cars. When we were done, I went looking for a yogurt place. Did not find one but did find a Double Double Cheeseburger with onions from In & Out Burger. I enjoyed every bite. I actually sat inside and took my time. I am really surprised I did not stop at a bar and have a shot of whiskey. I was wound up like a top.

I usually spend my whole day with my plants and they do not talk.

I came home and took a nap and know I am going to read the paper and watch the news. Have a great day. Sharon.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Evelyn I am so sad for you about your kitty, sorry I forgot to say something the other day. I could not beleive how well you seemed to be taking it after all those years of having him. I think I took my old Shar Pei pretty well, for me, this last July. When they are old and failing it is almost something you want for them so they are not so miserable. It is so dang hard to cope with though. I used to pray she would die in her sleep because I did not want to put her down. I am sorry for your loss.

we had a record breaking rain yesterday. Sat in the house all weekend and watched movies. Did not even go to church but did watch a live simulcast on the computer.

Katie that book sounds interesting. I will have to look it up to check some of it out.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good mornin Campers:

Wow that is a horrid thing to deal with. I bet it make for some interesting tree forms.

Yesterday i did get out and lable more of my stock plants in the north bed. I found a salvia i had forgotten I had so with the 2 new ones and the 4 I had already I have a good collection of salvia to choose from. Well today we are suposed to be 82 with 30 mph winds sotie everything down. I am going to use today to plant all my new cuttings.thats about it for the moment.
I will say untill you experience it first hand its hard to understand. Its a tough pill to swallow when Like myself I was used to doing anything and everything without any issues or any body parts whining about what i did.

the pic is one I got a long time ago. with all the hummer chatter i thought I would share the pic
Have a great day

Morning, the sun is still not shining, the clouds are breaking and they are calling for snow tomorrow in the County next to us. I hope Mother Nature knows where the county line is so she does not drop any of that white s*** on me. My daffodils in the field are up about 5 inches and are starting to bud. I concerns me because if those buds freeze there goes the income from all those years of investing in bulbs.

Linda, glad your feet are better. I can imagine you still have some discomfort and will for some time. I AM READY FOR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO SEND ME. I will be looking forward to it.

I am having a rip fit. My beautiful plants in the greenhouse are beginning to turn a pale yellow. Which can only mean, not enough sun and too much moisture, yet the humidity is saying it is below 20. I have not watered but every third day and it is a mystery what is happening. I sent Jen's Aimees prior to this happening. I only noticed it last night. I had her two in the house since last week, so they were not in the GH if and when all this occurred. I am beginning to think I will stop this plant thing and just sit and drink and get to be an old sloppy drunken lazy woman. You can not fight Mother Nature. I am sure it is chlorosis, which means they are all needing to be transplanted soon. It is a sign of root weakness, over watering or root-bound, tight pot, lack of sun for some. So take your pick I have been spraying with an iron mixture.

I must get out there in the GH and start to do some full scale work. I have been so happy with the way everything looked, now all of a sudden, when it comes time to ship, here we go again. It is not deadly to the plant but is unattractive and slows down the growth.

Dave, your little hosta look great. Thanks for the prompt shipment.

I could eat a mcDonalds Egg McMuffin. Hmmmmmmmm. Another time. Today I am too busy. I must concentrate on plants.

Talk to you all soon. Sharon, Ev, Kate, Jen , Dave, Lee, and whoever I missed, have a great day and stay well and do not fall over anything. Hugs. JB

mulege, Mexico

Good morning everyone,

Sharon, I'm with you on being used to spending lots of time with my plants and my dogs. And Tony, who is so much like me that it's all good when he's here.

Our weather is beautiful. It usually is clear albeit hot, cold or just right. Except when we have a hurricane. Then we get both winds and rain. Lots of both. The last one I got caught 70 miles north of here and had to sit for two or three days as roads were out after the storm stopped. Tony stayed overnight at my house and let his extended family take care of themselves. For a Mexican man this is big and shows a lot about how much he takes care of me and mine. He is usually the go-to person in his family. The last time his father had a doctor's appointment and he was taking taime off for it he returned early with the stunning news that one of his four brothers had stepped up to take their father to the appointment.

Linda, I'm so glad you understand about the foot pain. I can cope with the arthritis and other age-related stuff with some degree of acceptance (said while looking like JB's cat picture) BUT the foot pain refuses to be dealt with and I'm not only seriously "off" physically so I am in fear of falling down one of my hills nad my mind turns to mud and I can't think clearly about anything except how much pain I am in. I'm really glad my doctor knows me well enough to really help take care of me.

JB, I really hope your weather improves so you can get your plants out in the fresh air. And, of course, sell lots of them.

Dave, I am in awe of the amount of work that you have on your plate. And I wish you great success.

Ev, Lee, Jen and everyone have a great day - inside or out.

I might get some seeds planted today. If not I have several good books to look at and Richard Pryor cd's to listen to. And I will focus on enjoying the beautiful weather and not pouting about what I can't do.

hugs, katie

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

JB: It sounds like a good time to add lights to the greenhouse. Have you removed the pot off any of the plants to look at the roots? if so did the root zone smell bad or just earthy? how did the roots look?

A good inspection of the roots on a plant container grown can tell a lot of things especially if there are issues with the top growth. Roots should be full and white to tan in color dark brown to black color and flat deflated roots are sure signs of soil borne pathogen.
another thing to do once you have access to the root zone is to gently pull on a root. if the outer casing pulls off and there is a little thread like structure left you definately have a soil disease and treatment needs to be done. The most common of the diseases found in the soil are Rhyzoctonia, Pythium and Pytopthera (I hope I got the spelling correct). these nasties can suck the life out of a plant in the blink of an eye.
the real issue with soil borne diseases is that watering the plant is like throwing gasoline on a fire. One thing I noticed when reading up on the addatives like tarantula and others they stated that there are natural speciies in the mix to fight the diseases. so you might look at that as well...just a few random thoughts of a mad man...

just finished up the 1500 cuttings 2 cuttings per cell 50 cell trays. may night, East Fiesland and Blue Hill Salvia's Goodness grow's veronica and ice plant delospernum cooperii. I had a helper today and I am so glad she came over to help. I would be sticking cuttings on into the wee hours of the night.

well its just about nap 30 so I will say untill tomorrow... and yes I will start a new thread then also.
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

The roots are fine. This happens to tropicals and it will not harm the plant, it just does not look very nice.
It was my fault I am sure. I over watered because I was watching the humidity level and not paying attention to how wet the plants actually were. I will fix this very soon. If I can not fix it. So be it. I will start over. I am not going to loose any sleep over it.

I hope everyone is o.k. That is the first morning I have not seen overnight chatter. Later. JB

mulege, Mexico

I slept long and weird. Strange dreams.

However, I am now up and on my first cup of coffee and pain pill. There's some work I want to do with Tony.

I'm still sorting seeds. Some of them are just being tossed into planters than have some extra room.

Does hydrogine peroxide in the water help with overwatered plants? I think I've read this but don't know.

Melody in Admin. posted a request for suggestions for gardenng questions. If anyone has any ideas, send them to her and she will send you a thank you note. Not as good as a free subscription but a nice way to start the day.

Later, friends.

hugs, katie

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Katie:
I have been told that works but I have no experience with it so you might try it. whats the worst that will happen? as the hydrogen peroxide has 2 oxygen molecules I would think the extra oxygen has something to do with how well it does. That and haw far along the root damage is.

not much to say today. going to take it easy (yea right) today. as yesterday was a marathon day. I am so glad I had the help. I would still be sticking cuttings. lol. lets see how fast they root.
I am guessing we are going to be in warm weather from here on out, although I have my suspissions that we still might get hit one or 2 more nights with a freeze. boy would that hurt the peach crops here.
Have a great day

remember keep smiling it makes the world think you are upto something.

Wow! I have not been on here for a couple of days and thought it would be loaded. But, no such thing!

Monday night my sister had an accident. She was out in her greenhouse watering her tomato seeds, and when she went into the lavatory between the greenhouse and the shop, she had not turned on the lights, probably was light out when she started, so she tripped on something and fell, hitting her head on the toilet. She blacked out for a bit, and then when she opened her eyes she saw she was shooting blood from her head.

She knew nobody would find her, her S/O had gone to Arizona, and her cell phone was in her car. Her left side felt paralyzed and she could not move her arm or leg on that side. She drug herself out, about 40 feet to her car, using her right leg, foot, and arm, to get to her cell. She called 911 and while talking to the operator, she told her to contact me. So, I got a call from the sheriff's office that she wanted me to go with her in the ambulance. I rode in the front. After numerous MRI, x-rays, etc. she spent the night in the hospital and we got home at 3 o'clock in the morning again. I spent yesterday and last night with her to make sure she was steady etc. Just got home. Bob said it looked like a murder scene there was so much blood.

So, that is why I haven't been on here to keep you all on your toes and writing to yell at me. LEE where are you?

Yes, Katie, Hydrogen Peroxide is oxygen. Just a squirt in a gallon of water will do it. When they are over-watered it hurts to put more on them, but with the peroxide it doesn't hurt. Helps. That is what keeps so less houseplants from dying in the winter time than normally would.

Well, a ton of things to do today. I received a Japanese Maple Tree yesterday and it has been in water and Superthrive so gotta get it planted. Also got the mix I order from Kelp4less Dave. Am anxious to get to this stuff.

Guess what else I got JB! Will D-mail or email. Thanks, ttyal

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Wow Jeanette: I am glad to hear she is doing better. I will pray for her to complete her recovery. I try to make sure I have either the house phone or cell phone on me when I am outside playing. Hopefully everyone else will take note and do like wise.
Linda when you broke your ankels did you have a phone on you or did someone hear you scream for help? (too lazy to look back in the thread)

Sounds like you will be busy there jeanette. which Jm did you get in?
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I know Dave. I have been preaching to all of my sisters the importance of having a phone on them at all times. When I had my first surgery the surgeon told me I had to get one of two things. Either a cordless phone (no cells at that time) or a boy friend. LOL, I opted for the phone. I am never without it. Charging is no excuse. Hers was in the car being charged. I charge mine at night on the night stand by my bed.

Dave, I got that blend from Kelp4less today and there was no invoice, no label, nothing. Just written "blend" on it in black pen. I can't remember what I ordered. Their site is no help at all. Was that on ebay? If so, maybe I can find it on there.

mulege, Mexico

Jen, thanks your sister for reminding me again why I take such care on my hillsides. Especially when I am dealing with more pain than usual, like now.

Tony and I got an area of guavas and other trees cleaned up and leveled better so the path is improved. Even with two of us we are both very careful - a lot of the ground is soft and there are lots of pitfalls so setting up a ladder often takes some time. That's OK, we don't want any accidents.

I followed up by pulling up many aloe plants of various sizes to spread all around the property. These have yellow flowers. They are very pretty with the magenta bouganvilla.

I am now in quite a bit of pain but I don't want to take a third pain killer so I'll feed the dogs and then read. I'm OK as long as I don't try to move much. I'm also tired from my work outside so I'll probbly be asleep pretty soon.

hugs, katie

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Glad you took advantage of the reminder Katie.

You know, I have never seen an aloe bloom. If you could send a picture I would love to see it.

Dave, I found my transaction on ebay so wrote on the bag what it was.

Pawleys Island, SC

Jnette, i am so sorry to hear about your sister. What a terrible accident. I will keep her in my prayers.

Katie, I hate that you are still in so much pain. There has got to be some relief for you somewhere.

Dave, I was lucky ( if you can call it that) my son and his friend were in the greenhouse when I fell ( they listen to headbanger music out there). In fact they had been helping me. So they knew the minute I fell what had happened. They were going to help me get into the house but I remembered having crutches from the last time I broke my ankle and Shawn ran in and got those for me. ( yes, this is the 3rd time in about 4 years I have fallen and broken feet, nobody knows why I fall. I have been told that it has something to do with my spinal issues but it is really frustrating. I wonder if/when I will ever learn to walk without falling LOL and why it hurts so much more these days.

I am going to try to mail out everything I have promised this week. I will let you know when packages are on the way. Dave I will wait for you to recover from monday's marathon, jnette, if it is still too cold just let me know.
Sharon & JB, I will email you.

gotta go, stayed up too late last night and my 5 hour energy wore off 5 hours ago.

Jen - Palmbob did a series of articles about aloe flowers. If, under communities, you go to articles and then search for aloe they come up. He has some amazing pictures. I never knew there were so many aloes. Now I have aloe envy.

kb

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh Katie my gosh I looked up and saw Pambob did and thought it said Palmbob died. Whoo! I was blown away for a second. Oh I know he has awesome stuff. Most of the Succs and Cactus are not hardy here though, too cold. They turn black an mushy.

Linda, next week should be perfect. In the mid to high 50s and the lows are going to be in the high 30s. So, it should be real good. If sent priority. Let me know the postage and I will paypal you.

I will look Katie.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Jnette, so sorry about your sister. That is so scary. I am so glad she got to her car.

Why is it we all have falling problem. I used to trip and just go with the flow. Now I trip and down I go. You would think we were all 100 years old.

I finally got the tomatoes planted today. Vern insisted on helping but he kept putting it off so I told him today we are planting the tomatoes. Well they are in the ground and covered by my hoop covers. I will take a photo tomorrow. I also got one more basket completely rehabbed. Two more to go and I will be done with the baskets. I have the whole day tomorrow. I should be 90% done. Then I have two workers joining me on a neighbors landscape on Friday. Then my worker will be here on Saturday. I WILL BE DONE ON SATURDAY. He was not here last Saturday because his clutch went out in his car. He came by yesterday to let me know.

Then I will work on all the packages on Sunday and mail them on Monday.

I hope you all have a wonderful day tomorrow. I will be back, Tomorrow. Sharon.

mulege, Mexico

Good morning all,

Today I have a bunch of sore muscles from the work I did yesterday. Maybe they will take my mind off my sore foot. The pain is not too bad and I'm really happy that I was able to get out and do some work yesterday.

Linda, have you had your ears checked? An inner ear problem can mess up your balance. My balance is not very good. I've got posts to grab all over - very useful when Tony's not here and close enough that I can grab him. I also have trained myself to stand with my feet apart and not move until I'm stable. We don't have good medical help close by and I'm alone when Tony's not here so it's extra important for me.

Think I will sort more seeds and put some in my two old wheelbarrows that are filled with potting soil. Don't think I'll be moving around a lot today.

kb

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Labrenthitis (sp) is an inner ear problem that is not uncommon. I have had it for years, Problem is, it does affect your balance and vertigo is nasty. I went to many physicians and all you get are a pill, and some exercises and are told "learn to live with it". Again, after years of hearing that, I mentioned it to my chiropractor. Do not laugh.....he has me to the point where I now am only slightly off balance. He does something with the back of my neck and my shoulders. It puts me back inline and I am good to go until the next time. It will never go away if you have it, but there are ways to keep it from making you unable to function and even sick in the stomach and falling. Katie is right, see your doctor and make sure what is going on and then go from there. Did not mean to butt into the conversation, but I never had an ear problem, mine just arrived. No infections, etc.
Snow here today. I am going out of my mind. Later. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, I have a hole in my ear drum and I have talked to drs. about my lack of balance and they don't attribute it to my ears. Why is it we are all having that problem? Is it an age thing? I don't hear any men talking about the problem. Is it just us women? Why? I think we should find out if maybe the drs. help the men and not us, or is it a sex thing that women have the problem and men don't? If so, how come nobody has worked on the issue?

I think we should have an uprising!! Riot! Burn our bras!! Hit them with our canes!! LOL, I do however think it is a serious problem.

mulege, Mexico

I got a lot of help from doing Feldenkrais work. If any of you have a practioner in your area that might help. I think also that dancing (carefully) can help.

Interesting thought about it being a gender issue. Certainly men are encouraged to be more active, do sports, etc - all things that can help with balance. In many ways, men are taught to move more and to be more careful of their bodies. Men get a lot less sympathy for "boo-boos" than women do.

mornin:
Linda I am good to go as far as getting stuff from you. I just pulled the cover off my newest flats outside. we hit 40 last night and monday it is supoosed to rain and be down to almost freezing. I would think once you broke a bone and it healed it would be stronger. I do agree with checking with dr on vertigo. I will be chatting with my dr because I have been having some out of the norm uneasyness. worst is looking down from a distance.

We have had massive grass fires. so bad its showing up on the weather radar. we are 2 inch's below the norm for the year and with 30 mph+ winds its perfect for fires. If the grass ever greens up it will be better.

Had a call from my supplier today he had a client unable to pick up his order at the airport and he asked If I could use them. 2500 big blue liriope and 4500 stella de oro Day lilies. I would have to start stacking flats on top of the others.

JB snow would be a drag at this point. all my hostas are sprouting and everything has started to put on its new growth. Besides the daff's what else is thinking its spring in your area?
