Wow, I want one of each.................now I need to find a place I can put them. I hope you do not sell out before I search for a garden to put them in. I love that teeney weeney. LOL
Plant Propagation part XXIIX based on my own experience
Dave I gave you feed back.
Ok today it is back to cold. Windy too. I get that too JB, when it is cold it not only hurts to breath but it seems like the wind is blowing the O2 right out of my lungs.
Got our taxes done today and celebrated a decent refund by going to Buffalo Wild Wings. MMM
Thank you Dawn:
yes I like the teeny weeny bikini also. my absolute favorite though is dragon tails. Its one of the few fast growing dwarfs.
I counted buds on one of my hostas out front and it had 29 buds on it. now to dig out the map to figuire out what is where. And of course to buy more signs to label everyone else.
well its bed time for bonzo
sweet dreams everyone
I need to buy good labels this year for sure. None of my make shifts make it long, they all fade.
Are they permanent for plant id or lables for each pot? I used these for all my cutting stock and hope to label the hosta bed also.
http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/product/metal-garden-stakes/potting-accessories
Its funny how fast I went through them.
I saw somewhere here on on Cubits where people were using their own copper strips and writing on it or engraving into it. Did'nt you use another product last year?
Hi Everyone,
I thought I would check in here just to make sure everyone was ok. Our weather is fabulous so I am going outside. I took plants out of the greenhouse yesterday and today i want to start some seeds. I am so far behind!
Hope all is well.
Linda
Good morning everyone. I'm up (barely) and Tony is here. Neither of us knows whether we switched to daylight saving time. I think we did but will have to confirm later.'
It's another lovely day here. Clear and pleasently cool. Clear blue skies and lots of birds chirping. They like it here because I have trees and other stuff that gives them some protection from the hawks.
No news here. I had a flu bug yesterday and was either sick or sleeping all day. Better today but not up to snuff.
Tony is working on one of the last cupboards in the kitchen. When it's done I'll be able to put a lot of stuff away. Then we can maybe go to town and look at a tiled picture that I'm thinking of getting for the counter. I also have seeds and bulbs to plant if I get a burst of energy.
I have the ATV about half paid for and the trailer for it is put together and awaiting a coat of oil-based paint. I should be good to go when the seaweed starts washing in.
I'm going to check on my tangerine trees and them scarify some cherimoya seeds.
Hope everyone is doing well and the sun is shining for you.
katie
daves not doing to well so more tomorrow
Dave, I hope you feel better.
Katie, you too. How far are you from the ocean? For some reason, I thought you lived inland.
Jnette and JB, I have worked on your camellia propagation thingy. I will post it as soon as I download the pictures.
The weather was supposed to go into the low 70's today, but it didn't make it. It was grey and cloudy and the breeze is very cool. I started the seeds and Hubby put up a new light in my greenhouse, so I can start them under lights instead of by the picture window. I did really well, but when I picked up a bag of potting soil and moved it to my table, my ankle was very quick to let me know I shouldn't pick up the 2nd bag. It is probably a good thing, or I would still be out there potting myself silly!
Sharon, I took a picture for you of the purple oxalis and I will take a picture of the pink one as soon as it blooms.
The lantana is beginning to show a few leaf buds but not much growth from them yet.
If I have promised to send you plants or seeds, please let me know. I lost a lot of stuff when my computer crashed and I don't want to miss any.
Sea Ya,
Linda
Well, I am back. The photo was me yesterday after working in the garden like I was 49 years old.
Vern has an appointment with the Cardiologist today. Everything appears to be fine. Did not get home until 1pm and out in the garden at 1:30pm. I did get lots done but still have more tomorrow. I hope to be finished tomorrow. I wanted to be done today, but just did not get it done. I will start early in the am and just get it done.
I am not very talkative because I am tired. Everyone have a great evening and be safe and well tomorrow. I will return, Sharon.
Sharon, Those are too funny. JB is really gonna get you for that last one. LOL.
I am hoping to be able to start some more seeds today. I think the weather is supposed to be pretty and I really need to be outside! Can anyone say "cabin fever"?
Some of the seeds I winter sowed are beginning to come up. I have never wintersowed before so this is a new treat for me. I like to start a lot of perennials during the summer months, then they don't have to be protected over the winter and I get flowers much sooner.
I will post the camellia thing this afternoon.
Hope everyone has a great day.
Vern is snoring so I am up early. I am going to garden all day long.
My shoulder is really not liking all this gardening but it will just have to wait a week.
I did call the HOA landscape crew manager yesterday and he sent two men over to help me move two heavy items. They are always in the neighborhood and they think I am just a sweet little old lady. Got them fooled.
I will check in later in the day. Sharon.
Cabin fever
lol there you go Linda I said it.....
Yes I am going to be outside most of the day myself. I have a friend coming over that wants to learn all the "plant stuff". so its going to be propagation 101.the joy's of getting soil to hold moisture when filling the flat for the 1st time. and division.
ok well not true division but close to it. I have one aster that seeded all over the place so I need to harvest the babies while I still have time for them to recover and grow out to full plants.
oh yea and shipping. I like having to ship out an order or 2 everyweek its a nice pace. Now if I get really industrious I will have several to ship out and will feel like a 3 legged cat in a cat box contest.
well thats it sor now have a good day
Dave
Dave, do you add a drop of dishwashing liquid to your potting mix to help it soak up the water for the first time? The man I used to work for said without that to help start the cation/anion exchange, it would shed water. Funny thing is it does. Dishwashing liquid works for me.
I'm starting seeds today. Yipee! my hands are dirty and I am so happy. LOL A little potting soil under the fingernails cures everything.
Sharon, how did you fool the guys? LOL People think that about me too. LOL Little do they know......
Hello everyone except Sharon, I am not speaking to her. I do not look like that cat. I am fatter and cuter.
It has been a busy couple of days. Money is coming in to the Horse Park for Dr, Dey's Memorial, and that is a task in itself, plus I had two orders to ship Monday, money to go to the bank and other things to do here for the Park. I got my orders shipped and then the temps went down to below freezing last night. I almost had a fit. I hope they left NJ prior to the drop in temp. I mailed them before noon so I would have them out of here before evening.
We moved some blue spruce and arborvitae that were several years old. We had them in a holding baby field until they grew enough to move. Then Rob had to fertilize all the fields and get our veggie garden ready. I pulled all the flags from the daffodil rows since they are up and able to be seen without markers. Now if anyone runs over them I have to kill them immediately without a trial. LOL That is a No Fly Zone for everyone but me and Barney.
To top it all off, we are now on Daylightsavings time. I lost an hour sleep and I am so miserable. It takes me weeks to adjust to getting up at my regular time and find I am an hour later. I hate it. Same thing happens in the Fall when we go back to standard time. I am by that time adjusted and then I have it all over again only opposite. I just want to stay one time and be done with it. But no, the world will not cooperate. Oh well.
They have not yet sold the property next door and before that happens Rob wants to put up a fence over part of the property to keep any new neighbors and animals out of the trees. We are getting prices on fence...........chain link four feet only because any higher we need to have a survey, a plan, blood tests, enema, just for a stupid fence. So far the cheapest price we got was $4800. for 620 feet. We did not want a horse fence because that does not keep out the dogs and there are alot of strays even with all the laws. People are so disgusting and poor pet owners. We spray the trees and we must keep kids and pets out of the tree fields. So, a chain link is our only way to go. Nothing is easy.
I bought a Singer Sewing machine years ago and I am not good at sewing. I just need it to make sleepy huts for the birds. One stitch, back and front. That is all I can do. Anyhow, you need a engineers degree to get the stupid thing to work, so I got mad Sunday and put it away and bought a cheap little Brother machine that only makes 8 stitches. I hope I can work it. You have to be an idiot not to, well, you know how it is.....now I have this Singer that I have had for years, it is in perfect condition, needs oil, and adjusting, but I have the sucker and I want to get rid of it.
I wish I could sell it but to ship it would cost a fortune. Maybe I could put it on Craigs list for local people. Well, that will have to wait until I have time to deal with that. I have no idea what I paid for it, but it does everything but make coffee. I must have been drinking when I bought it.
I must go, it is four oclock, really tthree, my time,so it is too early to have a drink, a nap is out of the question, so I guess I will play a game on Facebook. My daughter will be home soon to go over the memorials and I do not want to start anything else.
The weather is cool............was to be warm..........rain and cold tomorrow starting tonight about 7. I hope you are all well. I am fine except for some anxiety that will take awhile to get over because it was 6 months of that "test" stress. I am really sorry for those poor souls in Japan. Someone sure pissed off Mother Nature over there. Wow. Later, JB
Linda, I have never heard of the cation/anion Exchange. Does it matter what brand of soap? I will try it. Do you just put it in the soil no matter how much soil you are wetting?
Dave, I got some Happy Frog potting soil and some powdered Tarantula $32 for 50 g/1.7 oz. (probably the $12 for .17 on ebay would have been a good buy) Anyway, I got home and looked at it and I thought I had wanted Piranha instead because I have Mychorrizae to use. Isn't that what the Tarantula is? They were both the same price and I think he gave me the wrong one. What do you think?
JB, you let me know how you do selling that machine on Craig's list. I have never bought or sold anything that way. Did you hear about the couple that advertised the diamond ring on there? They just sentenced their killer to life without parole. He went to their house to see the ring and killed them for it. Don't advertise anything like jewelry etc. that way. I don't think I would give anyone my address any more. Society is getting to awful anymore.
Well, we went to Spokane today and bought a cabinet type thing for the TV but they won't get it in until the middle of April. I have an installer coming tomorrow to hook it up. After a big fight with DISH, I decided to keep DIRECTV so I hope it is all settled.
Dave, I have 5 different ways I am going to start some seeds as an experiment. What do you think would be the best seeds to experiment with? I am thinking tomato seeds 'cause they are so easy. But, if I did that, would I have to use seeds from the same kind of tomatoes? I don't want 5 plants of any one kind of tomato.
Think we crossposted. I thought you were sending us a picture of you after working so hard on your hoa projects. That was a perfect picture for the way you sounded.
I use dish soap to break up my clay and to help my jalapeno gopher mix not to just disiptate into the soil. It has more staying power with the soap or Murpheys oil soap. I will have to add it to my seeds now.
I always get confused about my WS with regard to how wet or dry to keep them once they germinate. My soil gets algae sometimes or if it dries, they shrivel up.
Hope you feel better David. Some of your Dianthus are getting decent sized. Tiny decent sized but considering they are in a diaper in a cloner, they are surprisingly well.
I have Jeanettes monster brug cuttings outside now. They have been out for about 4 nights now. Yeah.
Glad you got the clean bill of health miss Sharon.
Dawn, I want to see pictures of the monster brugs. Are you fertilizing them? Once a week? Triple 20? If they are doing that well, they should be getting buds. What about the brug you had before? Is it growing as much as the ones I sent you?
The brug I had already remains dormant completely and I decided to transplant it elsewhere, so we will see how it does now. One of yours is really leafy and the other not but no buds. Our nights are still in the 30's sometimes and is supposed to be this weekend too. cold week, like I said before it gets hot and cold all through June here in the desert. Our wild flowers and poppys are about to overtake the desert. Soon. The yellow are out now, they are always first. I'll take pictures.
The 30s should not bother them as long as they are the higher 30s. They just won't do much in those temps. If it is going to remain that cold, maybe you might be better off not to fertilize unless you take them inside.
Hi Everyone - It's another beautiful day here. Tony just put the door on my last kitchen cupboard. The counter still needs to be finished but getting the cupboards done is a big step and we're both very happy.
Not only are lots of my citrus blooming - some for the first time - but one tree already has tiny oranges on it. Jasmine and adenium are also blooming. This is a lovely time of the year here and I'm enjoying it. I have an apple tree that is blosoming - I have had a couple of apples off of it in other years. It also has a sucker coming up and I don't think it is grafted so I may try to layer it.
I went to the Seed Savers site yesterday and found that I could easily spend $200-300. I'm still trying to get my old seeds planted so I'm holding off on ordering new ones. Hard to do as, like many of us, I'm a seed junkie.
I've been putting alot of the old seeds in an old wheelbarrow that I filled with potting soil. I got no germination and I kept tossing more old seeds in. Yesterday I noticed I have two little plants. They are identical and don't look like the wild things the birds plant. I love a mystery. Better to have mystery platns than packets of seeds that don't get planted year after year.
I feel good except my knees are killing me. I did get a little work done on the arroyo. I have at least five yacon plants growing. I also think I've figured out how to handle the area between the land around the house and the arroyo. There is a chain link fence between the areas and the burmuda grass is spring up under the ffence. I have lots of aloe plants and I think I will be putting some of them in there.
I have lots of small plumarias growin several to a tub. I ned to repot them but now while my knees aren't cooperating.
Seed savers has lots of fragrant flowers like the old fashioned petunias. Also a real pretty fringed dianthus that is also fragrant. So many of the nybrids have the fragrance bred out of them in favor of size and color - I'm drooling over nicotania, phlox and several others that are old, fragrant varieties.
But for now I must scatter a few more packets of seeds on my old wheelbarrow and see what happens.
Then I may do some sewing.
Hope everyone is having a great day.
hugs, katie
Well I went and did it yesterday. I was trying to get into one of my beds in front built with very large boulders and took a tumble. Landed right on my already hurt shoulder and my right hip. It is a little sore today and we are suppose to have "high winds" so I will see how the day goes. I have 5 hanging baskets I am rehabbing and I can do those in the garage. It has been over a year since the last time I fell a d it was all my fault. I knew I was trying to grt into a place that would have me off balance.
I only have about 1/3 of the garage garden left to plant. I have my worker coming Saturday. I was hoping to be done by then so he could help me with other items.
Have a great day. Sharon.
Sharon, you are like me, unfortunately, we never learn. I hope you heal quickly.
Jen, what is your weather like and please keep an eye on the day and night temps for the week of March 21st.
Dave, I have not had time to talk to you about the Market Place, but evidentially, listing your items the way you have them now is about all there is to the Market Place. Then, next step is a Website and if and when you have a website, you can pay the $100 a year and sign up for Plant Scout, the number of people using that is amazing, the only thing I hate is they use the scientific name of the plants and I have to look up everything, I can not remember what they are. Any sales you get from Plant Scout will come through your website. That is basically how it is set up. I did not realize that until one of the Plant Scout vendors told me.
I called the problem I found with Market Place order blanks to the attention of the ADM. and they had a conference call and are going to try and fix it. When someone places an order there is a place that says the buyer is to put his "address" for shipment in a space.
I have people who put their address in and never put a name. Then I have to Dmail them back and ask them for a name.
I will not confirm an order until I have a name and I have looked up to see if the person just signed on. 7 out of 10 of the people who sign on and order the same day seldom complete the order. You take the time to caculate the shipping and then send them an invoice and you never hear from them again. There is nothing anyone can do about that, so I do it myself. When I see someone is new, I dmail them and confirm the order prior to caculating any shipping or invoicing them. I have one guy now who has done that, ordered 5 jasmine, no name, when I wrote him to confirm the order and get a name I never heard from him. I told him I wanted to put the jasmine aside for him if it was a real sale, not a word. Sent him the second dmail and I am now on the 6th day and after ten days, I cancel. I then notify him so I have a paper trail in the event he decides to give me a poor feedback. I can prove I have been trying to contact him. So, that is the news on selling on DG just now.
To everyone else, love you, hugs and will talk soon. Must get HP work done. JB
Dave did you read my question about tomatoes and the experiment? Whadda ya thunk?
Sharon you know better than to get into those wierd positions. out of balance and looking for a place to land.... I did have a wierd experience yesterday. we went to the mall and there was one of the escalators well I guess I am feeling my instability because it we tough just to keep my balance I really believe its just my eyes playing tricks on me.
Jeanette: yes tomatoes would be a good one as they are pretty reliable to see what works best.
Katie: i just spray the fence row with round up it keeps the stuff in check. I know it can be a huge pain in the rear end if it gets loose in the garden. funny thing is most of our turf grass here is bermuda hybrids so its everywhere you turn.
JB I hear ya on the marketplace. I had an order early on right after january and I even sent them pics of the plants no reply nothing so just to clear up the marketplace outstanding orders i sent a request for payment. they dmailed me asking what the request for money was and they "never order anything, and just added to their trades requests" so I just canceled it. Unless i hear from someone a few times or have delt with them its first pay first ship. luckily I don't have anything real pressing to hold back on. I did get an order about the same time as the other one for my last fan fair gaillardia. have not had one peep out of him so i am thinking I will plant that one for me and be done with it.
yesterday was in the 60's so I put on my sweat shirt and went outside to play. we get really bad wind here so its not a warm 60 its a cool breezy 60. managed to get 4 flats of woods light blue aster cuttings with some roots, and some penstomon cuttings. then rested for an hour and then my trainee showed up and we did cuttings of forsythia to start and then the phlox I got in in january needed cutting so we did those. The emerald blue I planted last winter are all budding out I just wish they were fuller than they are. Its going to be a nice show though.
I ordered some more cuttings for next week. Goodness grows veronica, may night salvia, East Ferilesland salvia, Blue Hill Salvia & Delosperma Cooperi for next week. i just wish they were having better luck with their Ajuga Mahogany and burgandy glow. It has to be the wacky weather we have going on.
Visiting the grand babies this weekend so its going to be fun. Not much else to share
Dave
Dave, which is more like Mychorrizae, Tarantula, or Piranha?
I have been trying for the past couple of days to post the camellia thingy but I cannot post the whole thing with it's pictures too. Send me your email and I will email it to you if you want to read it. Otherwise, I posted it on my blog and it will publish on Thursday of this week.I tried to put in a slide show of what is blooming now, but I guess I had too many pictures. The blog wouldn't let me upload any more.
I have been a seed starting fool this week and it is so much fun.
Sharon I sure hope you feel better. I know about 'dem falls. ! They hurt longer now than they did when I was younger. ( wonder why?)
JB, who hosts your website? Did you write it? How often do you update it? I know I want to know it all... LOL. I have seriously wanted to do have a site to sell plants from for a long time........ Help.....
Dave, I cannot afford the backyard growers thing, or I would definitely do that but maybe after this season, I will be able to.
Hope everyone else is well. I'm crashing early tonight.
Sea Ya
Sharon I know you have the energy of a youngin but the bones of an old one, you watch that Mrs. Kineval.
It sounds like it is a pain to sell here. Are any of you going to an RU this year? I have gone to three or maybe 4 but I probably won't go this year. Things are different and all my real garden friends are on the other site and they are not doing them right now.
I almost fell down today. My dog Jennybear charged past me knocking into me as she went. Luckily, Tony was standing beside me and I was able to grab his arm and keep from fallling.
I got some work done but was in so much pain that I passed out this afternoon. It was strange as I did not feel depressed or miserable in any way - I simply passed out from the pain. I slept for several hours but am still not exactly awake. I think I'll feed the dogs and lie down again.
I got a $25 off of a $50 order coupon from Gurneys so I ordered some seeds. Can't resist a sale. Anyone not already signed up with them can go to their website, sign up for emails from them and they'll send you the $25 off coupon.
I can barely stay on my chair so I'm going to bed. My mood is really good; wish I could stay awake to enjoy it.
hugs, katie
Oh my goodness you guys are accidents waiting to happen. Take care of yourself girl.
well, I did absolutely nothing today. Shoulder just would not cooperate. High winds have not shown up as of yet.
I called on my new dishwasher and it suppose to be here next Thursday so it might be installed by the end of the month. Had the remote for all the units connected to the TV go wacky so I had to take it back to Best Buy. One thing I always buy is the warranty and I have used the warranty 3 different times. They will be here Friday morning to reprogram the remote and all the units. I thought Vern was going to have a break-down until he figured he could work the TV without the remote. He has a 42" in his man cave. I was looking forward to "Quiet".
I guess my body needed a day off because I just could not get moving today. I took a shower, did my hair, made the bed and that was just about it.
I will return tomorrow. I did not sleep well last night so I am hitting it early. Later friends, Sharon.
Sleep my friend lest ye fall.
Please check out my latest ebay ad. I need a bit of feedback. Is it understandable? is it a good deal? any suggestions to improve the ad?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220755983629
ok here is the breakdown per the ads on ebay
Tarantula
Advanced Nutrients Tarantula contains 19 types of organic beneficial bacteria that colonize plant roots and leaves, giving you growth and harvest benefits you’ve never imagined.
Tarantula minimizes hydroponics nutrient leaching, aids in nutrient cycling and absorption, improves soil structure, dissolves minerals (including phosphorus) for better bioavailability, enhances seed germination, fights pathogens, stimulates root growth and produces natural growth hormones. Tarantula’s beneficial bacteria are most effective when used in combination with Advanced Nutrients Piranha mycorrhizal fungi, which support and protect Tarantula’s beneficial bacteria.
Piranha
Piranha colonizes the root zone with 26 beneficial fungi. These fungi are 8 species of trichodermia and 18 species endo and ecto mycorrhizal. Trichodermia are very aggressive colonizers that enhance root mass, and provide excellent control from root rot, pythium and pytophethoria.
It apears to me that piranha has the mycorrhiza and tarantula has benificial micro organisms that help break down the nutrients in the soil allowing for a great use of the available nutrients. Tarantula also blocks the nastiest odf the soil borne diseases as well as converts decaying organic mater into usuable nutrients instead of a possible host for one of the soil borne diseases.
Linda: i know what you mean its a big nut to cover. Luckily i had it to make it possible so I am going to take full advantage of it. The main reason I joined was the sellers board where you post what you have for sale and everyone can order from you. being they are mostly in home retail nurseries they buy in quantities so it not un heard of to sell 100 of this, 50 of that and 30 of those as an example. For the most part I am shooting for the fall sales so that everyone on there can pot them up into 6" containers and sell when they come out in the spring.
where is your blog?
at the moment I have a lot of odds and ends to move out for the space. i just need to pull everyone and get an acurate count to post on the board.
I have a lot of honeysuccle that I have no idea which one it is. I am thinking its the red one as I know that would be the one I would buy for stock. i just need to see the bloom so I can rest a bit easier knowing i am selling what i am saying it is...does that make sense?
today we are suposed to hit 80 degrees.... wow can we say spring has sprung???
well thats about it for now.
Jeanette: I use the tarantula because I do a lot of seeds and cuttings which it helps promote the root growth. I had the best results using the kelp/fulvic acid, tarantula and pirranaha all mixed together. No flowers on the Brugs just monstorous plants. I will have to drive a rebar into the ground to keep it from falling over.
catch ya'll later
Dave
oh yea the blue phlox is in bud
Holy Cow, I was wondering where everyone was and then you all started to post again, now I can barely keep up with what is going on.
First, Dave, the ad on eBay looks good. I hope to get my stuff up and running in the next week or so on there, but I am going to do all Buy it Now so I do not have to deal with the auction thing. It is easier for me and then I get my price without a hassle.
My website is done by a friend who works for SJCOM.COM a website company here in NJ. Her name is Claire and she also does the Horse Park of New Jersey. If you want to contact her I can send you her email privately. My email is JBerger431@aol.com so you can send me the camellia stuff. Maybe you will have to scan it. Hmmmm.
Must get busy. This is cleaning day and we have finished the house and birds and now I must do computer work and bank deposits and then Barney will get a bath. I hope. If the temp. goes up to what they say it will. Later Gaters JB
Ok Dave, I sent you a D-mail on your ebay post. Looks good and took a lot of thought and work to put in an auction like you have. But, other than the thing I suggested, it is a bit to consume, but it looks good. Let us know how you do. I can just see you filling orders now and running around like a chicken with his proverbial you know what cut off. LOL Bet you would welcome that wouldn't you. I had no idea you had that many plants. Wish I could be there to work with you. (help you)
Thanks for the info on the Tarantula and Piranha. I guess he and I got it right when I bought the Tarantula. So, for seeds do you just sprinkle it in the pot and mix it with the soil? OR?
Sounds like you guys are REALLY taking this spring thing seriously. LOL, and Lee and I both still have a LOT of snow on the ground so a long way off from planting. I had thought it was going to rain today and sure could have used it. Would have gotten rid of some of this white stuff, but no such luck. You won't hear me ask for rain very often.
Looking forward to the camellia info Linda.
