Weather in your garden # 90

Thomaston, CT

Wow, glad for both of you, Candy & Patti, getting out to work......hit 55 here, opened the windows & let the breeze freshen the rooms....walked over the dam, & met my neighbor's new pit puppy.

Naugatuck, CT(Zone 5a)

I supervised the laying of a new floor in the spare bedroom. I supervise well.

South Hamilton, MA

50° and some new melt happening. The backrest of a bench appeared for the first time since the last batches of snow. The top edge had been showing, but 2 5" snows afterwards was no longer to be seen. I will get optimistic when the seat appears.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

wow patti 5:15 is early to be stiff as a board - slow down:)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It was GORGEOUS here today, high of 61 more garden clean up and tree trimming

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Jen, 61 really? Sounds like heaven!
Right now even it's very balmy! It's 43 and at 5 am I stood outside in the dark in my bathrobe and enjoyed it.. ^_^

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

54 now... drizzling ... supposed to get hammered this afternoon with rain.. and said we might have some of the S word tonight

Mid-Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5b)

At 5:30 I went out with the dog. It was lovely (grey and overcast, but warm) and was shocked at how much snow disappeared over night. I was out there working yesterday and had to thread my way around the patches of snow. Most is gone in the back. The side yard is much much better. If only it weren't raining I could do so much more work out there today.

Here's a pic of the nibbled bark on the lilac bush. As it dried out I see it's minimally damaged. Not like the caryoperis.

This damage is worse. I've never had this happen before. We have a population of chipmunks that I've tried to get rid of with repellents in their burrows. I think I'll have to work harder. There are very obvious tracks that appeared as the snow melted.

Here's an example. Of course, it could be moles or voles, but somehow I think it's the chipmunks.

THe Poor Moles are innocent. They eat grubs, insects and are good guys, but it could be the evil voles who eat bark, roots, and BULBS and live as freeloaders in the moles tunnels. But poor you. Patti

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

AAck! woke up to 2" of snow this am. Calling for a high of 33°.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Nice here in ACK. Sorry. I think we will break 50. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

lots of melting going on here - heavy rain this afternoon

Thomaston, CT

Sorry about the damage, Candy, but as the snow continues its retreat, I'm seeing lots of the same thing.....broken branches on hemlocks, pines, rhodos, & roses...what a mess! It's 45 here now, has been raining on & off.......the heavy rain is coming, maybe ending as freezing rain....ugh!

Naugatuck, CT(Zone 5a)

I look out at the garden and all I can say is "ouch" this cleanup is gonna hurt!

South Hamilton, MA

54° & mostly cloudy. Foggle on the way to church but sun broke out later. Now clouding over. I don't know about bark damage yet as the snow hasn't melted enough. I can see the seats on the benches & of course large pine branches & others all over. The heavy wet 20" of snow in a Jan storm caused those to fall. some viburnum & blueberry bushes are still leaning over because the tops were iced in.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lots of rain today. 0.5" so far. 50 degrees.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

51°, wind from the South at 16 mph, windchill is 44° and we have cloudy skies with occasional. rain.

Going up to 52° today, and rainy. Down to 35° tonight, rain heavy at times, clearing out tomorrow.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

rain should be arriving shortly - very warm out there and lots of melting

South Hamilton, MA

It has just started to rain. Temp reads 57° which I find hard to believe, it doesn't feel like it. snow is down to mid calf (DH) near the bird feeder.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Worked until 3 and then too tired to continue, but got lots done. We have another mountain of brush to burn, but it was too windy to fire it up today. DH and friend moved a couple of big rocks and cut down an annoying tree and then helped me clear more brambles and lots of choke cherries. I think by April we will be done with the heavy work for the season. Hoping for some rain today as we moved lots of stuff over the last couple of days and they would like a good soaking. I am off to NYC to drive my helper Pal home after him working hard for 8 days in our yard. I will spend a couple of days in the city visiting our son and other friends.Patti
