Snow again, but rain tomorrow please
Weather in your garden # 90
Patti, what do you prune in March? I promised myself I'd get all my shrubs in shape this year, but I'm having surgery on the 9th and it's messing me up.
weatherman - forecast went from 3" to 1" and we got about 5" - out to clear the driveway now.
Snow is melting here Patti.
You might give pruning a try later today.
We get rain tomorrow
Good morning.
Currently 29 degrees and cloudy in WNY. Heading for the 30's today with no precip, but 40's and rain tomorrow. The snow has already begun to melt. Can't be soon enough for me, but then there will be flood watches early in the week.
Have a blessed and salubrious Sunday, folks.
-Dave
21° #more inches of snow overnight & still coming down. First plow didn't come through until almost 10 am. Supposed to stop this afternoon, but the back of the bench which had started to show has disappeared again.
44° with a Northwest wind at 16 mph giving us a windchill of 36° and we have mostly sunny skies above.
Going up to 46° today, winds dying down a bit later. Tonight the clouds move in again, we're expecting a very wet and stormy Monday tomorrow.
Still have snow here. 44 and sunny, so should be more melting today.
Two weeks from today is the first day of DST. The sunset on that day will be 7 PM!!! ^_^
I have about 3 feet of snow in the backyard - any hope it will be melted by April 1? Currently temperature is 36 degrees - with some sun.

Hey Seandor, my daughter lives in East Forest Park area. She swears spring is never coming to you guys!
The temp was in the low 40's & nice sunshine....dropped some food off for my Mom, & she was outside with a hoe trying to move slush around from the bottom of her drive.... 96 years old! I told her tomorrow's rain would take care of it....I lied...there'll be a huge lake there!
Victor, what good news. I hope I'll be able to be outside then. It is wonderful outside right now. I just came in.
Good genes Victor...you have something to look forward to!
one word for today GORGEOUS
able to clean out some beds, take some pics...visit the garden pics thread
No snow left
One word for today:GREY!!!!
High was 53°
4-5" of snow added today. rain for tomorrow? Winter certainly not over yet!
jen you are really piling it on! :)
sorry
calling for rain tomorrow. Flood warnings are out. It got up to 50° today.
I hope we don't get much rain tomorrow, as my helper pal is here and itching to get chainsawing and whacking. We did go for a couple mile walk with the dogs, and then he managed on dragging a bunch of old down branches to a new burn pile very late in the day when the weather was less crappy. Plus we did a walk around to plan our attack. I hope the weather cooperates. Free help is hard to find. Patti
Same here, Jen. Outside in shirt sleeves. Did some cleaning out before the new growth overtakes it.
candyinpok, Pruning is apparently best done before the buds break and while the plant is still dormant, so I start pruning any shrubs and trees that need it any time after the first of Jan until late March. This is best time to prune summer and fall blooming trees and shrubs, however Spring blooming shrubs can also be pruned at this time too by being very judicious with the cuts so as to not remove all the spring buds, which unfortunately, I have done to my horror on a couple of occasions. I just prune the branches on spring bloomers that are crossed or damaged or ugly or too vigorous and leave any general pruning on those until right after they finish their spring blooming period.
Mostly I work in the naturalized areas of our property to tame the margins where we let the wild merge with the cultivated so it isn't like brain surgery or pruning a Japanese Maple which terrifies me. March is the best month for me to cut out suckers and old canes and to clean up around the base of shrubs and to tackle the trees. This is the time I also will rejuvenate a whole shrub by lopping it back to about 8" to the ground when a shrub is old and messy and is a quick re-grower like Spirea, Hibiscus, Hypericum, Ilex glabra, Viburnums, Lonicera and countless others. But you will sacrifice all the spring blooms if you do this in the winter which is always a tough choice. A less drastic method of rejuvenating spring bloomers is to remove the growth in stages over a few years. I always do this on the Syringa and Vaccinium, we can't bare to loose the Blueberries or the lilacs.
The best part of winter pruning is that you can usually do this job all bundled up and while standing and, with no foliage, you can actually see what you are doing. Plus you have a reason to be out in the garden in March if you are lucky not to have it buried in snow. Sorry for those still under a blanket of white. Patti
yep, snow is still here. Back of a bench has disappeared again. Rain tomorrow, but temp not going to be as high as originally predicted.
Its raining here todau with 40's. OK by me. Melting is what I want.
I need to spray for deer when the rain stops and there is no wind.
it's raining... supposed to go to 58 today.. we turned the christmas lights on to hopefully aid in the melting
LOL. Maybe Santa will retiurn
25° roads are down to pavement--driveway still covered, it will have to be worked on.

^_^
Well, they said freezing rain and snow, but we got rain. No delay, so I'm off to school. Sorry for those who got snow. I'd be worse than Eeyore.
Patti thanks for the pruning advice. I did go outside and prune, only the summer bloomers. I really hope there's another day that'll work before I'm grounded. I always procrastinate and then it's too late to prune. I'm scared to death of the Japanese Maple. I only can make myself take off a few little things here and there. It's definitely a plus to prune when you can see the branches, not like the forsythia where you're totally blind.
Well, time to go.
40° here, with gusty winds from the East- Southeast at 17mph, windchill 25°, and it's a rainy day here on the Island on this Monday morning.
Heavy rain & a thunderstorm expected today, temps remaining mild, our high for today will be 49°. More of the same for tonight with winds shifting from the NNW overnight, rain clearing out for tomorrow. Tonight's low about 27°.
Good morning.
Currently 37 degrees in WNY with rain. Temperatures plummeting back into the teens by tonight, then 30's tomorrow. Melting snow now with flood warnings.
Have a blessed and marvelous Monday, folks.
-Dave
Pouring right now. 0.3 inch so far. 38 degrees.
39 on Nantucket with some light rain. Hopefully I am about to head out anyway to work in the yard. Radar looks like it will clear soon for a while. Celeste, Poor you and ol' Eeyore. Patti
