Coffee Break #53 Endless Winter
Yep, cabin fever, bigtime.
Hope the photo helps!
Where's the tropical drinkie with the little umbrella?
There's one little area in the backyard where we just might see grass tomorrow if it warms up again. Rather sad when that will be the big excitement here except for going out to dinner tomorrow night. We get the best service on Super Bowl Sunday so we've made it a habit to dine out that night.
From Super Bowl Sunday 2007 - poached lobster (yummy)...
Lobstah claw is the international symbol for "Yummm!!!"
Smart, pirl!
It will have to do until we can get to Maine and a real lobster roll. If the carpenters, electrician and plumbers finish up with the laundry room extension of the house soon we can leave for Maine after they shut the door and wave good-bye.
Going to Maine in the winter??
Anyone see the commercial for the Shake Weight??!! I saw it before and was 'inspired'!! ^_^
OK...
Since this is the "Coffee Break" thread, I put out this hypothetical question with a sincere interest:
What is the BEST-TASTING tomato you ever had in a sandwich or salad ???
I don't care if it's heirloom or mass produced.
I don't care if it's determinate or indeterminate, off a 7-foot plant or a little patio basket.
I'm refering to raw tomato flavor, not cooking/stewing tomatoes like san marzano, etc.
Thank you in advance.
Yes, Victor, Maine in winter is gorgeous. Last year at this time we were sitting on a bench at the beach and it was in the 40's and there was no wind - blissful!
BA6A - Tough choice. Either Celebrity or Beefmaster. Too hard to decide because we love them both and won't eat winter baseball tomatoes at all.
Thanks "pirl": I'm keeping a list.
We've grown them both for the last 22 years and though we've tried others we keep coming back to those two.
Sweet 100, for a cherry tomato, is far superior (in our opinion) to Sweet Million or any of the others.
Victor, thank you, thank you, for the photo....now, if you could just transport me there! Pirl, how far up in Maine are you going? I usually stay in Kport where my stepson lives, but have not been there this time of year.....earliest was in April, when DH & I were still working....or I was, anyway, & latest in Dec. BA, hard to choose what I like best in a tomato, but all around eating, flavor & juciness, I have to pick Purple Cherokee.....it's sweet & smoky.
They were beefsteak tomatoes BA, I grew a patch of them when I was ~14yrs old. Don't remember the name of them.
Marilyn - we'll go to South Portland and visit friends in Scarborough then up to Waterville, Maine, Colby College to visit Jack's granddaughter who will start as Assistant Coach at the college in mid February. We'll meet up with Celeste and Ramona again so we're really looking forward to escaping for a few days and a few lobster rolls.
Sounds wonderful! If you get to Cabella's , my stepson Mike will probably be working in the fishing dept.
Where is it?
Looks like my little one has the flu. We never got the kids the shot this year. My wife tells me many of her patients who got the shot are getting the flu anyway. It's always a guess about which strains to include in the vaccine.
Oh, sorry for little ones flu. That's no fun at all. Poor guy.
Have a great visit to Maine.
I don't know what kind of tomato it was, but my dad grew it years ago.
Oh, no, sorry, Victor! Your wife is right....all my GKs were vaccinated & 2 got the flu....same with me....Pirl, the Cabella's is right in Scarborough...
I don't get my kids flu shots, it will build up their resistance to it for later years if they get it
Sorry to hear it, Victor. Hope he gets through it fast.
Thanks, Robin!
Yes and no, Jen. They will not get THAT strain, but it's rarely ever the same strain again.
Thanks, all.
Sorry your little one is sick Victor, they say flu is at peak right now.
Pirl, Cabella's is a great place to stop....just to look at how they have every thing set up.
Scaborough is Southern Maine, Waterville is Central Maine, Sunday River is Western Maine, and Moosehead Lake is Northern Maine.....if you just zig-zag a bit and do lots of driving you can cover all 4 cornors of Maine! LOL
I too like Celebrity and Beefsteak, also like 4th of July for an earlier tomato.
Still have not been in a Cabela's store. Buy from them online all the time.
Victor...the boys would love it!!!! They have a fish pond, games to try out, taxidermy everywhere!

I know - so would I!! Think the closest one to me is in Danbury, CT.
OR, the next time you come to Maine :)
Yes - on my list!
My stepson gave me coins to play the arcade laser gun range OMG...I didn't want to leave, I had so much fun! Heading for the doctor's today, as whatever I have has gone into my sinus, & the pain is not too bearable!
RD, sorry to hear that. Sinus stuff isn't fun.
Our grandyson, Henry, slept over last night. He needed to get sleep since there was a teen Super Bowl party at his house. It was wonderful. He has recently been diagnosed as autistic and started first grade after the Christmas break. I just love having him around. He is so curious, especially about animals. This morning, before his daddy picked him up for school we were going online to look up beluga whales, marsupials, and giant squid.
Pixie - we've been up to Caribou and Holton and wouldn't miss the lobster rolls in Eastport at The Friendly Diner!!!!!!! We've even been to South China and Damariscotta, where this shot was taken.
We also grow Beefsteak when we can get them. Our 4th of July were underwhelming.
Hope your doctor can find something to help you, Marilyn. Now you'll having me play arcade games at Cabela's. Jack will wonder what's next.
Isn't it amazing what we learn while we play with the little ones, Jan? My grandson is always teaching me something and generally it's about computer games.
We all know Victor loves Maine:
Did you make it to the Pumpkin Regatta in Damariscotta????
OMG! that is so neat!! Yes they do some really neat things.
I love this state. DW and I took a ride yesterday over to Rockland for a cup of coffee and just to sit and watch the fishing boats and ferries go in an out of port. Beautiful day and a heat wave (40's). Can hardly wait for spring though!
I'm also a big time Maine lover, Frank. We've been going there for years. Sometimes we head up to Gaspe and really enjoy that and their fishing villages and great French food as well.
The blueberries sold down here as "Maine blueberries" absolutely can not be compared to the real thing.
Weren't you lucky, Jan, to spend such quality time with Henry.....he's at a great age! Frank, you're lucky to be so close to Rockland.....and Pirl, I know you'll enjoy that trip!
We loved our two trips there and plan to return. Would love to hit Baxter park one day.
