Anyone Interested in a new forum: Square Foot Gardening?

Springfield, IL(Zone 6a)

Please post below if you're interested in a new forum category for Square Foot or Raised Bed Gardening. I'm just starting and I know that there are tons of plans and tips out there we could all share. I've done a search and it seems that there are a lot of posts scattered throughout the forums dealing with this topic.

Raised beds aren't only for veggies, but for anything. I know a lot of veggie gardeners are interested in this, so I'm posting in the veggie forums first. Make sure you post below if you're interested in seeing this as its own forum!

Thanks!!

One of our brilliant members (that could be anyone!!!) :) Had a suggestion... Here is what she said:

"...I think adding "and Raised beds" might confuse the issue (although, technically, SFG is done in raised beds),
it sounds like a separate discussion might ensue)."

I forgot to ask her if I could use her name, so I won't without permission. There's a lot of crossover between raised beds and SFG. The only other forum we have here is "Self Contained Box Gardens" which seems to deal with a lot of containers of different types but few raised beds. I think that she's made a very important point but want everyone who is interested in this forum to shake it out. If you would, please add your thoughts on the distinction between the two. Thanks!

Sounds like a great idea!

yes!!!! after moving last spring to a place where the only green in the grass was crabgrass i've had to combine the raised bed/sq. foot method with pond liner as a barrier to keep the crabgrass out. i'm really surprised and happy with the overall results but did have some problems. talking to experienced people with this method would be great.

Yes please! I live at the base of a mountain and raised beds/square foot is about all I can do. I am new to all this and would love info.

Plantersville, TX(Zone 9a)

I do raised beds & square-foot gardening. I would love a forum for these, but let it be free to everyone. I do not have a subscription. It would be nice , & we would draw a lot more people to this forum.

Yes! I am starting to prepare the area for square foot gardening this spring. This will be my first time to grow veggies. So all info I can get would be great.

Yes, please create a Square Foot/Raised Bed forum. I would definitely be a part of it.

Savannah, GA

Back before I had a yard (in NYC) I was an avid watcher of Square Foot Gardening. This is about 25 or 30 years ago. When I bought my house 5 years ago I had my splendid yard man build me three 4x4 raised beds, and went out and bought "All New Square Food Gardening." Wow. I had no idea that I wasn't "Square Foot Gardening" if I didn't use Mel's Mix... I gave up trying to plow through his hymn to himself. Can't tell you how disappointed I was. I think a better forum title would be "Raised Bed Gardening," which would include Mel's disciples and all the rest of us as well.

mgpaquin - I, too, would prefer the title: "Raised Bed Gardening" which, as you say, would included "Square Foot Gardening"

Yep, I like "Raised Bed Gardening" as well. In fact, when I first joined, I was looking for a forum called that.

I'm disappointed this is not going to happen in the 'beginner' threads.

Springfield, IL(Zone 6a)

Shune,

There is no reason threads can't be posted here as well. Whatever the main interest is: building, planning, crop rotation, etc., these threads can all be started here. Just because someone started different threads in a different area doesn't mean that that is the only place that discussion can take place! :)

I've been to the Square Foot Gardening website and people there seem very friendly. I love Dave's Garden website and unless something dramatically changes, I won't give up my membership here. You may, however, want to check out the forums on the SFG website: http://squarefoot.creatingforum.com/.

I know that there are a lot of other things one can use other than Mel's mix. What have you used, Curt?

Philadelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Yes...I am in....that is exactly what I need info about the most!!!!!!
