DAILY BIRD PICS VOL. 378

I wonder if she was telling me I'd better stop with the photos now?

Hey Duc, it sure does look as if she's pouting at you. lol.

Norman, OK

duc, 30 degree weather would look real good right now. We are stuck in the house. I will have to shovel our drive, but no need to try in this 50 mph wind. Couldn't get down the street anyway. So we will just enjoy the birds.

The birds are really pretty in the snow, but weather this cold with this kind of wind will kill many of them. No seeds available on the ground, 12 inches of snow.

This poor Cardinal is buried up trying to get to the grain I threw outside. Has ice all over his face.

Oh Red, I thought about you this morning when the weather channel was broadcasting from Oklahoma. The winds have been here all afternoon too. There were around a dozen cardinals trying to eat on the ground just now. Poor things

Love that slate junco and the rustiness in it.

Duc, that perch the nuthatch is on is pretty. what wood is it? Also love the tail pose on the Robin.

Nanny, sorry you got the ice part of the storm. I'd rather have the snow I guess. Although I'd much rather have some place warm! But woo hoo on that pileated! *bows to the queen*

Nice try on the picture for Teddy, Hack. Not much you can do with flash like that as it's not really the light on the bird you are adjusting for.

well everyone, stay safe tonight and into tomorrow.

Beautiful Scrub Jay in South West Florida !! The only question is how did the apartment building's that are not needed get the permission to bulldoze acres of prime Scrub Jay land? All I want to know is what they are doing to pay these wonderful friends back?

pengilly - am I first to WELCOME you to the best birding forum on the web?

And I loved the Scrub Jay pix. How in the world did you entice it to land on you?

My two boys Nick and Jake frequently point at animals and say "friend" and make up some funny story. I saw the Jay sitting on the roof and pointed at him and said " friend" mocking my boys and down he came. I just stood there froze and he was chirping and talking to me like long lost buddies. There was three of them together and they all took turns landing on us......unreal experience I will never forget.

Wow, that was awesome! The rb wp are fighting over the suet cake, I had another Northern Flicker, but did not have the camera! Been taking pics of Cardinals, finally got the female again. Its really hard to get her, she don't stick around long. Feeling better, I go out and watch until I get chilly, go back in and get warm then back out again! I guess you can say I am hooked when I go out there with a temp of over 100! Here is a pretty good shot of the MALE!

Hi pengilly!! Welcome & very nice photos of the Scrub Jay!!

Take care Teddy!

I have the woodpecker platform loaded up with suet today and all the other food is out on the front porch. The back yard is too slippery to navigate after all the sleet & freezing rain. And DH is afraid I might get smacked in the head with falling branches! lol

Just had the Cooper's Hawk chasing birds out here again. Not sure if it caught anything.

This shot of a Brown Creeper was taken on Saturday....in good light for a change!!

Awesome shots everyone...this forum is such a spirit lifter on a dark and cold day! Thanks to everyone for sharing!!

Pengilly...welcome to the Bird Forum and thanks for those wonderful shots of the gorgeous Scrub Jay! That must have been wonderful to have them land on your hand!!

We had about 8 inches of snow and it came in blizzard fashion. Needless to say all the feeders were quickly covered and I ended up outside in the middle of it all trying to put feed where the birds could get to it before it was all covered up. I put some under the shop canopy and under all the benches and tables. Lots of other places too and here is a shot of an old lazy susan I put under an old table. The bottom layer was quickly covered up but the birds were able to eat from the other layers.

Red, all your photos are just so cute. I feel so sorry for you and all those beautiful birds. I hate to think of them not being able to find seeds.

Mrs Ed my nuthatch is sitting on a manzanita branch. We have these trees all over our area.

Pengilly, cute jay. What a great experience you had with them.

Teddy cute photo of your wp.

Nanny, love your adorable wps too and the creeper sure is pretty.

Rose, you are so thoughtful to help the birds. You sure have a large crowd there-makes a cute photo.

Hoping all of you will stay warm and safe in those freezing temps.

The Pine Siskins are really enjoying the seed feeders.

Exciting day for me today. I found that Fork-tailed Flycatcher that started off this thread. A big, huge thanks to Elphaba for steering me in the right direction!! I really appreciate your help.

It was around 26F with a wind chill in the low teens and horribly overcast, but he was right where Elphaba said he would be. I watched him for about an hour until I had to head back to the truck to thaw.

No beautiful golden light in my photos as in Elphaba's, but I did get within 15 feet or so to get some feather detail and the overcast skies acted like a big old softbox.

I still have around 50 more shots of him to process, but so far, these two are my favorites.

Elphaba, what part of Galveston did you go to see such awesome birds? I MUST see that flycatcher.

Edited to add: Edens you posted that while I was typing!! I live in Clear Lake, if either of you could give me directions to this awesome bird I will go tomorrow - sleet/snow/ice can't hold me back!
