Coffee Break #51 - First 2011 Edition

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yeah - don't wanna be squealing like a pig!

Thomaston, CT

Ever get to the Ocala National Forest, Louise? I kept the doors locked through there!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I haven't been there since the early 60s, Marilyn. The most beautiful places with unmatched solitude are also places not to be caught alone. If nothing else, the gators and wild boars like the same places we do. :(

Thomaston, CT

How true....the area is really depressed, but very beautiful....

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Alligator alley, I used to take it to crossover to Sanibel, but further down south.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Been to Ocala - really nice.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

An owl that needs an eyelid lift.

Thomaston, CT

Eastern screech owl....so cute. Can't imagine why it's out during the day. Pixie, that Australian boy's story touched me so much....what a sacrifice.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Cute!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, very! Looks like the one from the Tootsie Pop commercial in the 70's.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

True love to lay down your life for another

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I don't know how those bodyguard guys do it.
- Hope the owl isn't sick, (I forgot the Tootsie Pop comm, I have to look that one up!)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

If it's tiny, it may be a burrowing owl. We have had a few nesting in our back yard area. One day my next door neighbor, who is our vet, called me over to look at one sitting on a limb at eye level in a palm that separates our yards. We stood about 2 feet away from him and he just looked at us without flying. He looked as sleepy as this one does.

You're right Louise......they did nest at the Villages, but I never saw one.....never saw their burrows, either.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

It's very hard to find their burrows. We never found it, but I suspect it was in the line of trees and palms that separate our yards. Did anyone see the movie "Hoot?" It is about some teens that opposed a construction company to keep them from disturbing the burrowing owls. Cape Coral (just across the River from us) is the capitol of burrowing owl nesting grounds.

Thomaston, CT

Never saw the movie....sounds like a good one!

It's a bit hokey, but pretty good for kids to watch.

One of our NE Forum DGers, "SarahsKeeper," is in today's Enterprise, our local (south- of-Boston) paper. It is a recounting of his medical challenges, told in an interesting journal format.

Very enjoyable to see the photo of him relaxing with his wonderful dog, Sarah.

Thomaston, CT

Yes, Andy said it would be in the paper.....glad you were able to read it!

One of my favorite all-time gardening shows was Gardener's Diary, hosted by Erica Glasener. Anyone else like that one?? Great format and always interesting, inspiring and relaxing.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

All though a tragic reason to have to fly, another heart warming story....BTW, i'm giving fair warning, I cried.

Bravo to the pilot & the airline.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Just the words that the child had been "murdered by her live-in boyfriend" had me wild. It's wonderful that the pilot made the near impossible happen for the grandfather but why is the murderer free?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't want to read that as I just read the news earlier today of a local low-life father who pummeled his five month-old daughter to death.

Thomaston, CT

Heart-breaking stories, both of them.....Victor, was that show on TV or radio? Not at all familiar with it. I loved the old Victory Garden, with Crockett.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Tv. May still be on HGTV.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I liked Gardener's Diary also. I very much miss it.

found out yesterday that grandybaby #9 is on its way. They are keeping it quiet for now, cuz she has miscarried before. Taking it slowly. My son has wanted another child especially after the birth of his niece. She just turned 3. Their other kids are 10 and 13. I'm sharing with you all, cuz I'm busting at the seams. I know you guys won't say anything. heehee
I'll be taking a couple of baby trips this year. One to Houston area and the next to Portland, OR.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - congrats and God Bless, Jan! Full baseball team!
