Daily Bird Pics Vol. 370

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Here is a link to the previous thread of delightful birds http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1147394/#new . It is a thread worth visiting!

This winter has been a great one for seeing the Carolina Chickadee! I love this adorable little bird but a photo has eluded me until I visited the brush pile a few days ago and was able to finally get a few shots.

This is the third winter I have photograped this male Cardinal...I am happy to see that he is doing well. I have named him Captain Hook!!

This Tufted Titmouse is always at the brush pile but hard to get a shot of him.

Last one for now...a juvie or female White-crowned Sparrow. This is the first arrival in the fall and the last one to depart in the spring...their song is a joy to hear!

Well, I went through all the last photos in that last thread and had it all written out and then pressed the delete button instead of the backspace! Soooo, excellent photos everyone. Sorry I messed up.

Rose, thanks for this new start. Your chickadee, cardinal (glad he's doing well) and titmouse are adorable. The white-crowned looks so pretty with the blooms in back.

I'm still going through photos from our one snow day on the 1st. Here's my Brewer's Blackbird I've named Stubby because he's got a shorter bill.

All the birds were enjoying the fresh water in the birdbath. This is a Golden-crowned Sparrow.

Another one at the peanut feeder box-I loved the pose. The bird didn't seem to mind I was just a few feet away.

Got this guy this morning, and the squirrels look so cute when they are on the bottom to the birdbath. The reason we don't have the birdbath up is because when we had it up, a raccoon kept getting a drink and tipping it over and he broke a chip off of it, he has also knocked down the suet cake a couple of times, but we fixed it so he could not get the cake out. But that is the reason the birdbath is not up, if you have any ideas of fixing something for the birds to drink out of that the raccoons would not be able to destroy, I am all ears. With the feeder where it is a birdbath would be a good idea.

They are so cute when they sit on there, you just have to get a photo. It is like they are saying, here I am, get a shot of me!

Rose, love all of your pictures, but the Dee is my favorite.

Duc, your pictures are wonderful also, and Stubby is my favorite.

Teddy, nice shots, but that Squirrel is probably saying "feed me"! Mine do!!

Lakeview, OH

I put bread and Sunflower Seeds on the ledge plus bread and ss on the ground for the ground feeding birds, which since the snow is gone, they are getting food elsewhere. Have not seen a Chickadee since it melted. These guys were really working on the suet cake, so I thought I would get them while their back was turned.

Oh Rose, what a great start. Thanks.
Cute bathing beauty, duc.
Love the close call with the Dee, Hack.

Teddy, I think Nanny had the same bird bath problem and just put the top of the bath on the ground. Nanny, do they all still bath and drink? Are there any that don't like it?

Rose ...fabulous new thread and I loved your Bob-whites on the last thread!!

Duc very cute bathing sparrow!

Hack, I want one of your Pine Warblers!! lol

Teddy, Mrs Ed is right. I have a terrible time with raccoons here where I live. They broke one bath, and several feeders too! I just used the top part and set it on paver/stepping stone on the ground. It has not been useable the past few weeks due to cold. But I was getting a lot more birds because of it! The raccoons still came and used it at night so it was usually dirty and had to be changed every morning. But is is so worth it!

Edited to add...the titmice didn't seem to use it and the cardinals were very leary of it and only used it very early or very late in the evening.

Thanks nanny_56 I never thought of doing that, of course as you said, the Cardinals would use it in the mornings or evenings. I might just try that.

You know, nanny and teddy, I've been thinking about getting a plastic trash can lid, filling the bottom with sand and just setting it on the ground in my back yard. I remember when my faucet was dropping, I had a little puddle below it and the birds were always in it. The puddle was right next to some bushes, it was the perfect set-up.

Charming little Dee, Titmouse and White-crowned Sparrow Rose, great name for the Cardinal. Thanks for the new thread.
Duc, love your bathing bird and Wren.
Glad to hear your feeling a bit better, Teddy. Would like to see the White-breasted Nuthatch here. It's a sweet little bird.

Oh a redpoll, eagle and a hawk.....I am good for the day!!

Hack, that idea with the lid sounds really good. I would give a try! I just put some water in the bath after seeing a number of birds this morning checking it out. We are at just about freezing now.

Of course the robins are from back in October......I called this one "Does My Butt Look Big?"

I've been checking a local lake that held 8 wintering Trumpeter Swans last year. Finally, yesterday, 3 showed up. Don't know if the others will return or not. They showed up on 01 Jan last year and 05 Jan this year. The heads on these aren't stained with iron deposits like the ones last year, which makes me wonder if they are the same ones, or if they are they must have spent the warmer months in a different location.
