Home of Ball Busters. Sorry Dave. I will be back. Just got on. Been lazy all day and I need to start dinner.
Jnette do not get back in bed and change your mood. I like you snarly. Makes me look good. Well kinda.
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL. I SHALL RETURN But JB will probably already be in bed.....Sharon,
Plant Propagation part XXVI based on my own experience
Cross Post. My Queen of Sheba is still green and blooming. Just cut one of our oranges. Oh my, they are very sweet, no seeds and delicious. Sharon.
OK, Sharon ~ What plant IS the 'Queen of Sheba'? You have my curiousity aroused.
Evelyn, it is actually a vine. I have it growing in a very small pot and it needs to be moved. I am sure the roots have gone out of the pot. It grows during the summer and only starts blooming when it gets cooler. I am making plants and one has your name on it. I will find a photo.
Just got dinner finished but Vern has his nose in, I hope, the last bowl game. The Pork Chops are simmering in gravy and the black eyed peas are on simmer and the mashed potatoes are done. Gravy will warm them up. Nothing will get bad if it takes him an hour to move. It is a good thing I go with the flow..
Funny story. For my 40th birthday my office had two cakes made. Both very large flat cakes. One had a very large Blue Barracuda with the words, Happy Birthday Barracuda.
The other had the words, Happy Birthday Mother Winter. The cakes were side by side and they announced, to a very large crowd, that they knew which cake they should be eating....
So see, nothing has changed in 28 years. I will either Mother you, or eat you. I will return. Sorry. Sharon.
Photo is vine. Actually looks like a bush. I did not know it was a vine.
That is so funny. I was teasing JB and you all took it to be snotty. Oh well, maybe I will go back to bed since this site is getting to be so testy. At least in bed I can read a funny book if I want. Might change my mood.
You are right Dawn. Very full of sarcasm and thorny comments like your rose bushes you moved. Hope you didn't kill them. Lotsa Vitamin B tho should help a lot. What brand is it? I used to buy it in quart bottles. A couple of different kinds. One was called Start Up, and then there was another one. Haven't seen them in years. Thought maybe Superthrive people had bought them out and started bottling in 4 oz for a lot of bucks.
Your white stuff all over your plants are me breathing on them JB. Didn't think you would catch me. So there. You can't beat that one Sharon.
We crossposted Sharon.
That looks like a vine to me. Just one that has been let go crazy and not shaped or treated as a vine. A very pretty one. Bet it is too tender to grow up here.
It is 5 degrees right now and was -4 last night.
LOL, love it Sharon. BTW, how does your son's family like this cold weather?
Cross Post. You are correct, I did not know it was a vine. It was cut totally back last year and sprung right back. We were 27 last night and it did no freeze. I think it would be worth a try. My neighbor think it is because it is close to the house and under a very large branch of a Sumac tree.
They up somewhere by Bend, Oregon at some resort with the girls and two other families. Megan, the oldest daughter, fell today during snow boarding and got a concussion. Came down the hill courtesy of the ski patrol. She was checked by their doctor, they insisted even though Todd told them he was a doctor. They called about an hour ago and said she appears to be OK. They are driving home tomorrow, which is their planned return. I saw the weather report. 3 degrees in Spokane. Must really be cold in your area.
Yes, I thought was hilarious. Just shows you how sick my mind really is.
Still have not eaten. Vern just pored himself a drink. How much you want to bet half time.
The poor dogs do not know what to do with this cold weather.
I win. Half time and he gets up and asks, "Time to eat?"
Well, Vern and the dogs will straighten out when the game is over and the weather warms up tomorrow. Bunch of pansies you are growing there Sharon. LOL
I screwed up the VCR so we couldn't watch the end of the movie. These things don't have any volume control on the old movies. Actually, they are better than the new ones.
Well, gotta go to bed soon, going to make another batch of tamales tomorrow for my sister and BIL who are due back from Costa Rica on Wednesday next week. Their Christmas present. One of these days I might make some for myself and Bob.
I called and had their driveway etc. plowed out several days ago. Cost her about $90. Oh well, it's only money. But it has all turned to ice now. Better that it is along the sides than in the driveway. Also, the snowplowing the state does leaves big berms across the end of the driveways. What a PITA as JB would say.
Going to bed, ttyl
My ear popped several times this morning as I was waking up and my ear/jaw problems are much improved. I've no idea what happened but am grateful for the result.
I made a meat loaf yesterday. First time in years. It tastes pretty good.
I've been bup around seven for the last few days. The long depression seems to be lifting. I'm looking forward to Tony coming to work tomorrow. We can get to work on some of the arroyo. My neighbor Tom does not like tire walls so we are going to build more of them. We were going to anyway but annoying Tom is the frosting on the cake.
I am going to do some work in my kitchen. There is one wall to be brown bagged, then we can put in a few shelves and then we can finish the lower cupboards and counter top. Poco poco as we say here. Part of the chaallenge is finishing each part and having the kitchen usable so I don't feel wel have to try to get everything done as fast as possible.
It's quite chilly today and I brought my little propane heater in from the storage area. I can use it during the day. The dogs keep me warm at night - along with four quilts!
The tangerines that taste like honey are kind of like tomatoes and corn - you really have to pick them fresh to get the full flavor. Come on down and help yourselves.
hugs, katie
I have some used gardening magazines - anyone want any? I will be distributing them on a first come-first serve basis. I asked my husband to get out the old Organic Gardening magazines, of which I promised to a DG member. Now he got down much more than I anticipated. I used to sell gardening books and magazines on ebay. I don't anymore as it is very time consuming and always checking on the computer...etc. Also they have put in place a few more obstacles in selling as well, Auctiva no longer gives you free unlimited images.
So now I have quite a few....anyone want some?
~ Evelyn
No thank you Evelyn, but it is very nice of you to offer. JB
happy new year all... go to airport at 4 am to return home.
Katie - do you fill the tires on the wall with soil? I had a thought of cutting small holes in them and poping in plants to make a blooming wall.
we had a cold week last week and hit 70's today so it was not a total cold visit.
spent some great time with my grand father. he is using a walker to help him when he slips or starts to fall. helps stop the broken bones. not bad for 90
well I just had to say hi... I want a few magazines
lots of pics of busch gardens more over the week
Dave
From the people at www.tirecrafting.com I learned how to cut out the sidewalls and then turn the tire inside out. We're using these to terrace the arroyo. For the wall we are building about half-way down the arroyo we are stacking tires, filling them with soil as we go. We're putting bouganvilla along the top and it's growing well I'll also be putting in some vetiver because it makes very deep root systems.
I make paths out of the turned tires. We fill them with rocks. They provide good drainage during our occasional torrrential rains and keep the rocks separate from the soil. It's not the prettiest system but it works and it's cheap and someday I'm sure I'll have lots of creeping, draping plants which disguise the tires.
Once the tires are turned inside out, they can be scrubbed and painted but for now we are more interested in holding the soil and skipping the scrubbing and painting makes the work go much faster.
kb
OK, Dave ~ You may already have a package. I sent it media mail, so it might be a few days.
OK ~ the titles are: American Horticulturist (AHS), The American Gardener (AHS), The Garden (RHS), Horticulture, Garden Design, Fine Gardening, The Herb Quarterly, The Herb Companion, Garden Gate, National Gardening, Flower & Garden (OOP), Beautiful Gardens, Flower Gardens, Country Living Gardener, and some other assorted magazines that there just might be one or two there. I do have some of The English Garden, but not sure I am ready to part with them yet, though this part of the country will never produce anything even similar to an English garden. Some of the Herb Quarterly and Herbal Companion are spoken for, but I can spare just a few to maybe one or two more people.
I needed to go put more B1 on and did not Sharon. It has been snowing off and on all day. What about you guys, is it snowing there too?
I use a big gallon of b1 but don't remember the brand name of it.
It is Winter so I hope it will be alright. If I can't move it now, I don't know when I could. It was never blooming except in Spring, too much shade so if I lose it, I'll be bummed but it will not be a huge issue. I moved it a few years ago and now again. It survived but who knows now.
It's freezing.
Dave if you can dmail me about Oklahoma and or Kansas. I would like to know if I moved there, what places are the best places to be to find jobs easily and the cost of living is not off the charts in comparson to the income? How are taxes there? Is the state of Ok doing alright? California is not. We look for a place to go where the humidity is not off the charts.
Dawn, we are suppose to get snow tonight after midnight. High tomorrow is suppose to be 34. Last year we got about 9 inches of snow in one day. Closed the whole town down.
I have the "Geek Squad" coming tomorrow. Other than that, nothing going on that cannot wait.
Handyman suppose to return on Tuesday to finish list but it is suppose to be storming Tuesday. We need the moisture so I refuse to complain.
Evelyn, if you stop buying magazines, all those different magazines will close. I only get Fine Cooking now. I get more info from the internet than I do from a magazine and I am now into de-cluttering big time.
Tomorrow I am going to work on the three shelf cabinet on Vern's side of the bathroom that is crammed full of medicine, pre-purchased shampoo, body wash and who knows what else. I think I will take a pre-photo. I think I will take the card table in there to set things on. That will make less steps.
I have a headache in my left eye so I do not think I will be here very long tonight. See you all later tomorrow.
The back landscape was full this afternoon with Quail, Dove and Finches. They were under the bird feeders for several hours. They must know a storm is coming.
Jnette, you are a nice Sister. Hurry back Dave. JB was quick. Katie, where do you get the tires? Linda and Lee are probably both hiding from the weather. Later, Sharon.
Thanks, Dawn for taking the cold weather for us! We had rain all day and last night as well. All of the snow has melted now, for a change! Sharon has snow, too! But not me, for a change - that said, weather is subject to change at any time.
Sharon ~ That 'Queen of Sheba' is not hardy here, and hopefully you will not lose it yourself unless you can bring it into your garage or house. Yes I grow some borderline plants, but never know if they make it until spring.
Jeanette & JB ~ Are you still snowed in? I sure hope not. See, Sharon and Dawn have volunteered to get the rest of the snow for the season, so you can rest easy now...LOL! I, however, did not volunteer, but still would not like to see anyone with more than their fair share of it.
Jeanette ~ I think ALL of the large banks are crooks. Well at least they have their fair share of them in there.
Dave ~ Are you STILL on vacation? Well, I sure hope that you are enjoying yourself. I will save some magazines for you.
Katie ~ I would love to see picture of your tire gardens.
(edited for typos..)

Evelyn, This is the 4th year for the Queen of Sheba. Last night we were 28 and it is still fine. One tough old broad.
For those of you that are looking for some propagating info, I just noticed this thread:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/367693
Good thread. I know Twinlakeschef, I met her at the RU. She was a Chiropractor in Orange County and is now a Chef and owns a restaurant here, I think but moved to Iowa if I recall. She had a garden tour at her place once. Jack of all trades and master of them all too.
Still snowing. Good luck with your turn Sharon. My boss called and my job called us off tomorrow. The buses for the disabled can't drive in this weather.
Yep, you're right. Hiding from the weather. It looked gorgeous yesterday, but it was deceptively bone chilling. I was fighting a little stomach bug, so I was really just lazy. Didn't get on the computer until late last night. Then it was just to check a few emails.
Katie, those tire planters are really cool. I would never have guessed that the terra cotta planters were made from tires. I have seen retaining walls made with tires and they can be very pretty when they are planted. It is a much better use for them than destroying the environment.
It is a shame that all the excess snow can't be gathered and shipped to the areas where the droughts have been so severe. It sounds silly, but if they can ship frozen food all over creation, why can they not ship snow. LOL ( heaven help me I must need to go back to sleep.)
Sharon, That queen of sheba looks gorgeous. The foliage almost looks like our winter jasmine, but the flowers are so pretty.
Dave, it is good to have you back. Rest up, you will need lots of energy to catch up. LOL
Lee, How's that puppy? I keep trying to talk hubby into another one, but it's a no go right now.
Jnette, are you still snowed in?
I got out and worked in the greenhouse over the weekend, and realized I have quite a lot that needs to be done. I am making a list.
I started some seeds in wintersowing jugs, so it will be interesting to see how they fare. I may start a few more things, but mostly I believe I will wait until late february to start things.
Must get busy, I am catching up after doing the bare minimum during the Christmas break.
I will check in later.
I am up early. Vern is snoring which means he is dehydrated. And it is snowing and still very dark at 7am.. No sun anywhere. A little snow stuck to the ground during the night but the snow on one of the glass patio tables melted during the night. But at this moment it is really coming down. Today is landscaper day for the greenbelt. The leaves are going to be covered by snow so I guess they will have the day off. The SW needs the moisture so badly, if I was not in my pj's, I would be out dancing in the street.
I am going to sit down and go through all my seeds today.
When I got up my pool apparatus showed the air temp was 41 so there is no way it got down to 28. The experts say the lowest temperature is at dawn. This apparatus turns on the pump if there is a chance of pipes freezing. Last two days before this morning, it was on and flashing freeze activation.
Hannah has arrived at BYU in Provo, Utah to start school again tomorrow. Her mother was ready to see her go to get rid of "Oliver", the boyfriend.
JB, I am going into that site you sent me later in the day. I was going to do so yesterday but had a neck/eye ache. I think it was pressure from the storm coming in, because I very seldom have anything like that. I also had a real bad day of unbalance yesterday. Every move I made was followed with an effort not to fall down. Never did fall but that is because when I get like that I pay attention to every move I make.. Just a lot of unbalance going on in Las Vegas. LOL.
Well i just turned around and looked outside and the snow is starting to really come down and the ground is now covered. They will probably close the schools up here. We are higher at this end of town. Later friends.
OK Dave, why is that????
Sharon they showed a picture of snow on the palm trees. Pretty cool.
Well I have a dr appt so better go take a shower.
Yes Katie I would like to see a picture of a tire wall also. Bob was making some planters from tires turned inside out until I told him I had never liked them.
The cat was lying on my arm so I was typing with one finger. Not easy. Many years ago when I went to college, in a typing class, one of the ladies had only one arm and let me tell you that lady could type faster and more accurately than any of us. She was amazing.
Lee, I meant to tell you that I bought a new HP printer. I got it because my daughter has one and loves it. Also, I have found that if I get the same equipment she has that it is easier for her to help me with my problems if she has the same. Anyway, we spent about 2 hours hooking it up and it is so cool to be able to print from my laptop.
I was having to email myself things I wanted printed and then pick them up on the desk computer to print them out. A real pain. Now I can print from here.
Well, gotta hit the shower. ttyl
edited to add (My edit JB) Lee, after spending 2 hours I can sure see why the average person would have so many problems with the electronic equipment like the printer. Guess I am lucky.
BTW Sharon, why are you having the Geek Squad out?
This message was edited Jan 3, 2011 11:13 AM
Shar I am sure I am the ONLY one here who can relate to being so excited about snow and rain storms. I too wanted to dance around. My husband was raining on my parade and I finally said, "Please let me enjoy this without talking about how working tomorrow will be miserable every 5 minutes". so he did. Today he went to work and sat in traffic for 45 and barely moved because the I-5 was closed down and another highway was barely open, so everyone coming back from the holidays were going this way. It was funny because it is a rural highway not really heavily traveled except for by truckers.
Greg called work and said I am going to be real late so I am taking a day off. So both of had our day off together. My job let me know last night that we were closed because our disabled transportation can not drive in this weather safely in this State.
So pretty Sharon.
I too was excited when I lived on the coast in WA. However it only took a couple of years here in Montana for me to really get over that excitment. Now, I just cover my head and wish it away. I will admit tho, snow is beautiful if you don't have to go out into it. It is the cold I just can't get used to. Has been nice but cold for this last week with a few snow showers thrown in. Thanks Jeanette
How is Dave doing. Shouldn't he be home about now?
I have been cutting quilt squares all day.
Storm is doing great and boy how smart. He is fetching, giving, and chasing already. But still needs to find a job in a nursery--Still transplanting and digging through the snow and ice. Only problem with that, he doesn't dig for the transplant, he just carries it around and the hole goes empty. What a mess come spring. Will have to find some plants to put in his holes. That way, it will look as though I planned it,---won't it??????
Guess there won't be a yard tour this year.
The SPV have all cashed in their chips and dried up. They all had a web like covering so I assume there were spider mites that I didn't see until it was too late. Oh well I tried---- didn't I.
ttyal, Lee
Well our snow stopped about 1pm and by 4pm it was melted.
I took the two dogs for a walk in the snow. Maddie, the female loved it and just ran around, the male, Jordan, got about half way around the park, turned around and ran back home. He was in the garage when I got home because I had left the side door open. He had on his leash, I just did not have hold of it when he decided to take off so his leash was soaked. We had most of the snow up here by the mountains. Downtown did not get much snow, just rain.
The Queen of Sheba got nipped from the cold. Many plants got nipped last night but nothing unusual.
Geek Squad was here for my wireless remote. I have a difficult time getting adequate coverage on the back patio, my mother's old bedroom and our bedroom. Well, Geek Squad did not show up. "The Bachelor" showed up with a German accent. What a doll. Probably 35. Charming, tall, knew what he was doing and very polite. He is married for two years. I explained right off the bat I was not a geek and he laughed. He worked on it for over two hours. I now have access on the back patio and our bedroom but mother's bedroom is not to be.
To much energy saving backing on the plywood of the roof and siding under the stucco. But I can just do other things in that room. Paint, read, think, nap or whatever.
My bedroom has this very large overstuffed chair with an ottoman right by the fireplace. I wanted it there. I wanted it on the patio. So I got 2 out of 3. I have the largest, most powerful router. Unless I go commercial and I did not want to do that. I just designed Vern's computer area on the wrong side of the room for the access I wanted. And I only had DSL access wired into his room. It could be corrected but I am not in the mood for all that extra cost and hassle.
Evelyn, got your package today. Thank you so much.
I got one of the two boxes of seeds into the house today but that is as far as I got. Spent over one hour on the phone, somewhere in India, with XM Radio. Vern has XM in his new car. Had it transferred from old car. Got a bill for three XM units. After 20 minutes on hold, 20 minutes with young lady in India, another 20 minutes on hold then a customer service rep in the US. They assured me it has been corrected but I will believe it when I see it.
Dawn. Just something for you to think about. It is always easier to find a job when you have a job. So when you decide where you are moving, start your job search while still employed.
I got rid of my eye ache but I still have pain in my neck. I think my neck is out.
Unbelievable, but Vern is watching another football game. When will this ever end?????? Later friends. Sharon.
Yes Sharon, they are in the playoffs now and just have a couple more weeks for Superbowl. But then there will be basketball and then baseball. Maybe he just wants to annoy you LOL, sounds like it is working.
Dawn, you are soooo funny. Where is the snow???
You are loving that little dog now Lee, but wait until the snow is gone and you see all the holes and your favorite plants dug up. Then I want to hear you laughing and calling him so cute.
Dave is due back today. Should hear from him tomorrow?
He must have impressed you Sharon. Sounds like you got his history. You loved his accent? Did you see the bill? And he didn't even get it working like you wanted it?
Dawn, why are you guys moving? Are you serious?
I have been so darn busy with things of no interest to anyone that I am just being quiet for now. I am not looking forward to the weekend. My appointment with the cardiologist is Friday and I am determined not to change my lifestyle, which is already healthy and good, and I will not take any of the new drugs on the market. They all have side affects that are worse than what is wrong with you. So, my negative attitude is not good and I am a bit cranky. Putting my guard up I guess. We will see, and to top it off, they are saying we may have another storm coming that will bring snow that day. What else is there to talk about?
I have plants that look like hell, leaves falling off, can not keep them damp enough. I have Mealybug inside again, I moved the Aimees to the GH to try and keep things safe in the house, but I was too late. The GH temps range from 50's to 90's every day the sun shines. I can not open the vents because it air is too cold. I am not a happy camper.
I am going to walk the dog and listen to some music and see if that does not change my attitude today. Then I must do the sales tax for the quarter and file three months of filing.
I think I need a cup of coffee and a change of attitude. Later, JB
I was was feeling low energy until I read JB's post. Now I'm exhausted. Yuck.
My ear popped again this morning. I did a little on-line research and am now sure I must have a brain tumor. Is that possible if you don't have much of a brain? Like Winnie the Pooh I am a bear of little brain these days.
My big task for the day is to go to town and see if my new credit card has arrived at the post office. Then deal with Geicko.
Lethargy is progress over misery, right?
Repear after me: I must wake up. I must wake up.
kb
Katie, you are so funny. You see, if I sit down and attach myself to this keyboard, I will stay here for hours and then I get so stiff I can hardly move, so I must break up my visits to you all. I did the taxes, then I did a leaf comparison I posted on the Holiday Cacti forum so they could help me identify one. Now I am going out to the greenhouse before the rain/snow starts again. LOL Later. JB
I didn't know you could diagnose a brain tumor online. I will have to try it. Could save on doctor bills.
Hello Jen, how the Heck are you? I made no comment about diagnosing brain tumors because I have done that sort of thing, but never came up with any real firm decision.
I am working on diagnosing mental illness because I have to cousins who are making me crazy with their mental games. I can not be sure if they are really suffering from dementia or some other old age crap. Or, are they playing games with me. I am about to tell them both to drop dead. Only problem is, one is 90 and the other 91 and if they did drop dead I would feel bad. We all have crosses to bear or is it bare?
I spent some time in the GH today and it was so neat. Some new shoots on the Aimee stock plants I took out there just a week ago or less. They are so much happier in sunshine rather than just good light. Spring will be here soon, I know it will. Hoping and Praying is all I can do. LOL I pretend also. And I think my cousins are crazy? It runs in the family. JB
hi all I am just popping in to say i just got up to speed here. I will open a new chapter soon for all the dial upers. I am watering for the front this saturday. suposed to snow and yuk.
I am still in recovery from the trip. we got held up in new orleans waiting on some ski group headed to denver. southwest air has some funny routes. panama city fla, tampa , new orleans, dallas, denver, provo all in one day....
I miss the warm and relaxing time we had must have slept 15 hours a day. got some awsome pics of topiaries from BG's will post tomorrow. well its time to change the water. more later tonight or tomorrow depending on how I do the rest of the afternoon.
