Today's Weather in your Garden - 84
Snowing HARD here right now.
1 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR ARE POSSIBLE ~ Must be where your at now huh Victor?
Feels like.
Columbia, SC, had their first white Christmas since records have been kept!
Lightning on the west side of Manhattan!
Uh oh - gusts of 60 mph on Nantucket!
Currently 20 degrees. Wind chill of 10.
Glad Patti is in VT...wind is blowing steadily here....about 4" so far, predicted is 2'......not a happy camper!
Just opened my garage door for a peek. Looks about 8 inches on average. Drifting heavily.
I'll open my garage door when I dig it out... it faces North! lol!
Eeek! Glad I have my stepson to help shovel out tomorrow!
I am happy to be in Vt as with all that wind which is fairly common, the snow will just blow off the Island instead turning the Island into winter wonderland. If it does build up we have no snow plow or blower and a long driveway so we have to do what is called Nantucket plowing. You just keep going out and driving up and down the drive every few min. to keep a path open which is a real pain. We have a good snow blower here in Vt as well as plenty of people with plows if we need one and a flat short drive. The towns head of the dept of public works lives down our dirt road, so it is always plowed well and kept clear or he can't get home.
Victor, you have way more snow than here so far. It will be interesting to see who has the most. I dug out my tall boots, as I think I may need them. Patti
State of emergency in NJ. JFK is closed.
Wow - major hwy closings in NYC.
Wimps... Darn the torpedoes full steam ahead!
We just had our first snow plow go by, still not much in the way of accumulation. DH and DS and the dogs are taking a walk now, but I am hunkered down with a good glass of Austrian red wine in front of the fire. I am no fool. Patti
WaterCan2:
I bet you a million non-dollar$ that you have a fireplace and/or generator.
(My next house will have a fireplace!)
we are getting whacked!!!... looks like a foot already... but hard to tell with the drifting ... already called with a 2 hour delay for work in the morning
We have a fireplace and as well as a woodstove in both houses and I wouldn't want to not have either. I also would like a backup generator, but haven't bought one of those yet. We have wells at both houses and I would like to have a hand pump option, but don't which is another bad thing in my book. Now they are useless during a power outage. At least in Vt, we have a year round running brook that runs through the property, but not in Nantucket, though there is a pond across the street, if we got desperate. We have a great old cellar in Vt that could be used for a root cellar, but not on Nantucket, though we do have a good crawl space to store my canna, dahlias and caladiums in, so it could be used for winter veggies in a pinch. We built the Nantucket house as a passive solar house, which was a wise move. Now if I could just be clever enough to make both properties almost self sustaining in times of bad weather or crisis, I would be very happy. I would love to put up solar panels at some point and most likely will. Patti
I'm sure you already know to boil the pond/stream water during a crisis...the camping stores now have new-fangled, high-tech water purification kits, like wth UV, etc.
Sounds like you're better prepared than 99% of the USA population.
No BA6, neither one, I start off with 1M more on our next monopoly game, but I've faced much worse weather than this...
I've lived in Florida for the entire summer! (lol!)
wind is blowing hard here - was going to snow blow at 10 and decided not too - have tomorrow off and will get up early to clear the driveway for the better half.
I woke up because Randy had the TV on and the stupid emergency broadcasting service woke me up doing a test... sheesh... I bet you we have close to 2 foot of snow.. and not supposed to end until 9AM... will take a picture later
Snowing and drifting here, the wind is howling......it's a mess out there!
B.A. ...fireplace/woodstove and/or generator is a must in Maine along with 4 Wheel drive. It's just not smart to be without. I had the fireplace built after the ice storm of 1987 and I spent 11 days w/5kids and no power. I bought the generator last fall....it's true that with age comes wisdom ^_^
We didn't get any snow but it sure is windy!
I bet Ronnie, Allison & Jen would share some! LOL
oh yeah ... take it all!!!

we were supposed to get 16 - 24" - only about 8" - very windy - just in from clearing the driveway.
I think we have about 8" as well....hard to tell with all the blowing wind....it's howling up a storm! The drive has been plowed twice, Mike shoveled out the walk & his truck....I have both fireplace & generator, & a small woodstove in the cellar that I can heat up soup on if need be, but lucky having the power stay on!
just got another call from work.. our delay turned into we are closed!!!!!... don't have to waste a day now!!!
Yay! We got about 12" maybe...it is hard to tell with the drifts.
Just put on a croc-pot full of homemade baked beans and the rolls are rising :)
I went out awhile ago, & dumped seed onto the wellhouse for the ground feeders.....
23° windchill -3°, wind from the NW at 30 mph, humidity 78%, overcast w/ light fog.
Hard to tell how much snow fell but I figure about half the height of the drifts which would make it about 20" since we have 3½ foot snow drifts here. Side roads/ residential roads still knee deep with snow as the snow plows have been slow to arrive. Wind gusts are still whipping up a storm out there. No power loss here, nice & warm with all the normal utilities here including phone & internet. I'll clear out a path later after the snow plows pass and give me a little more snow on my driveway... Time to break out my waterproof ski pants! lol!
DH has been out snow blowing. We got a foot plus, but light and fluffy stuff. The dogs have been out racing about as they love it. Road was kept plowed all through the night, but we aren't going anywhere. We have to figure out DS departure back to NYC, but that may wait until tomorrow. Stay warm and safe all. Patti
Yes - hard to tell how much with the drifting. Well over a foot, for sure. Crazy wind continues. Plow dude did not come yet. Wife's office is closed.
One more bag of pellets in the garage - then I have to get more outside!
very windy here too - this afternoon xcountry skiing!
Treadmill in a few for me.
Hope it is a big bag. I just brought in more firewood. Not so much wind up here, but still snowing. Patti
