My Garden

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Nice pics! The clematis is really pretty. Which one is that?
Isn't it disappointing when you buy something and then it turns out to be not what you purchased? That's happened to me also.
I ordered snapdragon seed and Winter Sowed them, re-planted them into idividual pots, then, finally planted them in the garden. They are "blooming" now. I have no idea what it is, but the stems are about four inches, spindly, and have a teeny tiney little flower at the top of it. It's so disappointing! They look a little bit like Angelonia.
For what it's worth, my Sara Barnhardt is really pale pink. If I had it to do over, I would chose a peony that has a stronger pink color.

Thanks birder, I think the Clematis is called H.F. Young. I'm sorry some your flower's came out to be not what you ordered. You know you spend all that money on flower's that you really like and then they send you what they want to, it seems their should be some kind of law against these Garden Center's. I'm really disapointed that I didn't get the right flower's that I ordered but I really don't mind the wrong one's so far. At least they aren't to bad looking.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Well, if you are happy with what you have, then no problem.

birder, if you look at the background of this picture, you'll see I took your advice on planting Hosta's underneath my Pine Tree. I like the look, and thanks.

I thought I was a gardener until I got a load of what Roseycats is doing in one year! I am humbled.

I think your noid peony that was supposed to be Sara B. is actually "Blaze". Here is mine on a one year old plant.

Very nice Rosy. I moved some of my hostas this year. I re-located them under my boxwood shrub. They are green and white. I like the look under the boxwoods. Your coneflowers are really pretty.
You should be very pleased with your garden. Now, sit back (try to) and sip a glass of tea and enjoy. I try to do that, but then, I see a weed or whatever and I'm up working in my garden again!

Dayton, OH

Thanks birder, It sounds like a good idea putting your Hosta's under Your Boxwood Shrub,I bet that is real pretty. A lady down the street gave me a start on one her hosta's years ago it is green and white, and I have given people starters from it, I've transplanted it around the yard so many times, lt's a wonder the thing is still alive. (Good Plant) It's been so hot and rainy here I can't get out to pull weeds (beds need cleaned) so I have been doing a lot of nothing as far as gardening goes.

This is a Cleveland Pear Tree I wanted a Bradford, but That's what I get for sending my DH shopping, but It has turned out nice. I planted it around 5 or 6 years ago? Maybe 7. Picture taken "2011"

I bought this Daylily at Wal-Mart thinking I was getting "El Desperado" but got this instead. It's not bad looking, but Wal-Mart should be more careful on getting the right flower's in the right package, or whoever packs the flower's.

We have had some rain off and on and it has made the weather bearable. I have all my bed weeded once again. Now, I need to get mulch and distribute it. I am also using preen in some of my beds this year. It's been a real challenge to keep up with the weeds this Sp. We had sooo much rain (22 inches) in the Sp. that everything sprouted. I have pulled up lots of little trees.

Dayton, OH

Sounds like you have had it really bad this year. We have had a lot of rain this Spring also but I don't think we had that much.
I used Preen mulch last year in my flower beds, liked it, but it cost a lot of money. This year I bought cheaper mulch and I have an awful lot of weeds in one of the beds already. Another flower bed that I mulched keeps getting mushrooms small skinny one's that's hard for me to see, I guess, it doesn't pay to go cheap. good luck and happy gardening.

birder, how's your garden doing? Did you get your Mulch put down? Also how's your w.s. doing?

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

We're still getting mulch on all of the gardens. I am having so much trouble with chiggers. I am having my husb. put the mulch on, mostly. The foxglove and larkspur are starting to go to seed. I need to scrape the mulch away from them so they will hopefully, re-seed.
We have most of the gardens on water timers and soaker hoses. That really helps.
Veggie garden is gearing up. We have lots of Cucumbers, some yellow squash, some zucchini, and the green beans will be ready to pick this weekend. No tomatoes yet(:. That's what we really like. Our butternut vines and spaghetti vines are loaded. We really like the butternut.
Japanese Beetles are macerating my rose blooms.
We've had some nice weather that allows us to enjoy our gardens.
What's growing in your garden???

Dayton, OH

I finally got most of my flower gardens mulched for now, I had some preen from last year so I poured that on my beds. I hope that takes care of the weeds for awhile. I don't have a veg garden, I think I'm to old for that. Sounds like you've been working very hard, be careful of those chiggers, I wear long legged pants, and long sleeve blouse, when I work outside, to try to keep the chiggers from biting. Sometimes it gets really hot, but I'm afraid of getting lime diease, or anything else. I'm sorry about the Japanese Beetles macerating your Roses, they can be such a mess to get rid of. Do you have any pictures of your garden's? Yes we have had a couple of nice days here also, but I think we are going to get rain tomorrow. Maybe not a complete wash out.
As big as your gardens sound I can image those soaker hoses and water timers help out a great deal. Do you can any of you Vegs?

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

I am discretionary using Preen. If I want a plant to re-seed, then, I can't use the preen. It seems there's always a plus and a minus in life!
Yes, I put up veggies if we have enough that we don't eat fresh.
Chiggers can go through the clothes. One has to wear very tightly woven clothing.
Yes, I have lots of pictures of my gardens. I am going to make a scrapbook of my garden with sections for Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. So, I have been taking pictures of each season.

Dayton, OH

I didn't know Preen did that to Plants. You know I haven't had fresh Veggies for years. Getting hungry just thinking about them, think I'll take of that when I go shopping next time.
birder, are you going to post your picture's on Daves Garden? Hope so.
gotta go for now, I want to lay and watch some TV.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Do you go to any Farmer's Markets? They have fresh veggies.

Dayton, OH

No, we don't go very many places anymore since my DH has gotten ill, He is on oxygen 24/7. We buy our Veggies at Kroger's. Talk later, it's getting late and I'm about ready to crash.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Rosey, so sorry to hear of your husband's poor health. Your garden can be a real stress releaser. God Bless.

Dayton, OH

Thanks, Birder. My Garden has been great for stress, and the people on here have been great also. We finally got my DH
on some antibotics for a cold again so he's doing better today.
Did you get all your Mulch on your garden beds? It's been very hot here lately which makes it hard to do any work outside.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

No, I don't have all the gardens mulched. I pull weeds in an area and then, mulch it. Yes, it's really hot here also. We have sooo much humidity. This AM, it was 72 degrees with 73 percent humidity. It is so humid, it is foggy here!
Right now, the skies are over cast and I am hoping for some rain.

Dayton, OH

It sounds like most of the country is Hot and Humid, but as far as I know we haven't had fog. Are you working in your garden's in this heat? I am a little. Did you get your rain? ( July 7th) We got some rain earlier tonight, which means I won't have to water my flower's tomorrow. Thank the good Lord.
Take care and happy gardening

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Yes, we had a "little" bit of rain. I work outside when I think it's the coolest outside. I have to watch though, or I get eaten up by mosquitoes and chiggers. I will work outside for about 30 minutes at a time and then, go in to cool off. Most of the time, it's 30 minutes and I am done for the day.
The fog is condensation from the heat. It's kind of weird.

Dayton, OH

Did you ever use "off" for the mosquitoes and chiggers? I haven't worked outside for the last couple of days, because of the heat. we are suppose to get a bad storm tomorrow, but just in case we don't I'm watering the yard in the morning,
anyway. The weeds are doing great. Do you live around any lakes, or do have a pool in your yard?

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

No lake, no pool. I don't want a pool. There is a lot of work keeping it clean.
I hate to use chemicals on my body. So, I don't really use off. I have read a mix of sulphur and talc powder wards of chiggers.
