LOL, Bob does need socks but he can afford his own. He is just too lazy to go shopping. Thanks anyway. Maybe he'll take blue. LOL
Plant Propagation part XIV based on my own experience
growing them. Go green, make a fortune in the future, it is a gamble because the green stuff is yet coming.
Hi to everyone. Snow has come to the area now, cold will be with us for a while, so guess it is time to get the quilting and rug making materials out and get busy. Can do nothing outside. But, for the most part all is well. SPV are growing, and seem to be getting bigger than I expected. What ever I did this year is working, don't know what was different but..... think the hibiscus and oleander trees are kput.... they aren't looking so good, palms are doing fine. But then, you know what they say about survival of the fit.
Still looking forward to the GSP, however, the roads are so bad. And I am so afraid of driving in the ice and snow. Hopefully, it will clear up before it is time to go and get him. I know it is only 150 miles, but, that is a long way when weather is so bad. Then you have the 150 miles back........
You guys talk about trees, seems like the only ones I can grow are the ones the birds plant....have lost most of the ones I have planted to the cold winter. The little tags they put on them doesn't mean much around here, don't think whoever puts them on knows what they are talking about!!!!!!!!!
Stay warm everyone, will keep you posted about my new addition.
Lee
Dawn, think it was Taxall? For breast cancer? Does that sound right? Used the bark someway. You see, as I said, by the time the trees would be big enough to use they would be overtaken by something new rendering them obsolete.
Lee, what are SPV? Lee, when we live in this country I try to buy at least one zone colder than the tags say. I don't believe them either. In a normal year when we get snow to insulate them before it freezes most are ok. But what is normal any more?
ONLY 150 miles is a lot in snow and ice.
Well gotta get one more cup of coffee before I get moving. ttyl
Sweet Potato Vine. Leftover starts from the ones I bought this spring. I also try the one zone colder, however, I think it is the winter dryness along with the cold. Yes, we get snow, but it is too cold to melt. Generally they die from the top down, at least that is what it looks like.
I don't know what I will do about going to get GSP. I am worried, can't leave him at the airport. You are right, it is a lot of milage, especially when you think-what goes up must come down so it makes 300 round trip. Oh well, will cross that bridge when I have to. Later, Lee
Ok, SPV, did you get any from that same place you bought the flat of them a year or 2 ago?
Have you ever tried Wiltpruf? It coats the leaves etc. Like Rhodies, so it locks in the moisture and they don't dry out in the winter. Would think it
Don't remember when you said the GSP would be there.
Well Lee, you should pack your bags, drive to the airport, take GSP and yourselves on the next flight to Vegas. F&B still free and we will be in mid 70s today. But you had better hurry. We will be in high 50 next week.
I do just the opposite when buying plants. I usually push the envelope and try to convince the plant this is southern California. That is why I am moving so many plants into my garage. We need to get rid of one car and then I would have twice as much room.
My coleus are turning their last beautiful colors this week. They will freeze next week even those it will not be that cold. They go when the lowes are in the 40s. I have convinced myself not to take cuttings. A lot of work last year and I did not get one o survive out of about 50 cuttings.
Lee, is your hibiscus a tropical or hardy?
I am off to do another 1/3 of my garage and met the tree service crew. We are removing another 7 trees. Who ever planted these trees planted them to close.
Call your Senators and tell them to no let the decrease in doctors pay go through. It is set on December 23rd to reduce their reimbursement by another 28%. It is hard to find a doctor now.
Wish me luck and I will see you tonight., Love, Sharon.
Is that the Diabolo ninebark you are talking about investing in? If so, the cultivar Diabolo has a patent number attached. Not sure the way it is written just how many of these plants are covered by it, I am sure you can buy and grow and sell, but to propagate is a no no.
Dave. am I correct about that...............come on Honey, I need to know if I am reading it correctly.
Found one of my three missing cats. He had been in the barn and when i found him I tried to find a vet to come and help me get him. I found one to be here by 1:30 and he died about noon. I cried and then said a little cat prayer for him. We will bury him tonight when my SIL gets home.
We had nasty wind last night that came with the storms and rain again. The rain is over and it is very windy and balmy. The panel blew off the South door of the greenhouse but otherwise, all is good.
Talk soon. I love socks also. My daughter and I have this thing about buying each other socks. I have so many now I will never wear them all out. LOL Fun things.
JB you are correct about the patent. they are good for 20 years on a plant but trade marks are forever so its a no no to do either with out a liscense. they can be bought but its so much per plant and the holder wants to maximize their return on investment so they only liscense large growers. I am hopefull my new maple will come back as the same coper leaf pattern it did last year. It would be a hoot to have one that I can patent. here is a pic from early spring. I guess I forgot to get the fall color pic. but as you can see it has large area's of cream on the leaves I will need a new name for it too.
feeling a little better but still not 100 percent.
Sorry to hear about the little Kitty it sounds like he was scared to death by some predator. what a shame. time to break out the night vision scope and the 30-30 JB. are you ready for night time ops???? I know all life is precious and the circle of life is important but so is protecting the farm animals. I guess it should have been answered was it's death from an animal or just weakness and thinning the herd?
I agree socks are a good thing. I started changing mine out every am as I was wearing them out by wearing them 3 or 4 days. its funny how good a fresh pair of socks feels. suposed to freeze tonight but we have had warnings before and nada. sorry about our rain storm hitting you JB it was a windy one...not too much wet but windy indeed.
time to lay down anyone want the flu???? its free ... and its soooo much fun...... please someone take it from me
Dave
No JB, the one Dawn was talking about investing in was growing a bio fuel tree, Millettia Pinnata.
The Ninebark we were talking about is one I have in a container on my deck, Center Glow, which I am sure is under patent.
I forgot to ask you JB, did the vet come out, and if he did, did he say how he thinks the cat died? Poor animals are sometimes pretty defenseless out there. You think they can take care of themselves but that is not always the case.
That is a pretty Maple Dave. Do you know what a Douglas Maple is? I have one growing wild outside my door here. It is a very strange leaf. It looks like someone brushed up against it and got blood on it. And then splashed it with blood. I put some pictures in the plant I D forum and they took about a week but then came up with it. If I can find the pictures I will show you.
No thanks, I do not need any flu. Did you get shots? Seems like everyone I hear has the flu are the ones that got shots.
Here is one, not a very good one, others have more.
Beautiful Maple. Wow, did you really do that? I am impressed. Mr. Cat died a very painful death I am afraid and I blame myself. I saw him Sunday afternoon and he was sitting like he was having a BM or tinkeling, and he was not on dirt, he was on the gravel driveway, which is not like him at all. But, with my one eye I just thought maybe he was just sitting in an unusual manner. He got up and walked under the trees when I came near him which was not like him since he was the friendliest of all 5 of the cats a riscued. Anyhow, Monday when he did not show up for breakfast I was worried but it is not unusual for him to sleep in or just hide or hunt for a day. I saw him Monday with a rat, he was eating it which is unusual. Tuesday he was missing again but it was raining and so I did not pay much attention because he is usually under the porch when it rains. Then, when he did not show up this morning I started to look for him and he was no place to be found.
I had to take food to the Church Food Bank today and as I was loading up the jeep with bags of canned goods I turned around and there in the cat house was the cat and he looked like he was sleeping. I talked to him and he never moved. I thought he was dead. I touched him and he moved a little. I had an appointment in town at the Chiropractor and I was late, so I had to leave him and I made several calls intown to people to come and help me get him into a crate to take him to the vets. Got home in about an hour and he was still alive but not moving much at all.
I also called several vets to see if they would make a house call. I found one who said they would be here by 1:30. They charge $110. plus for house calls and she said it sounds like he may have a blockage and need to be taken back to the hospital and kept for several days. I knew that meant near $1000. but I was willing just to make him comfortable. I went outside to check on him about noon and he was dead for sure. So, I feel responsible for not finding him sooner and helping him when he needed me. I hate irresponsible pet owners and I am feeling like one now. I should have looked in that stupid cat house sooner. He has not been using it. the older cat has been and Mr. Cat was sleeping under the porch close to the house. He would usually sleep on the deck and I should have known something was wrong when he did not arrive on the deck Monday night. But, cats are so independent and these are feral cats anyhow, so I just let them do their thing.
That is my story. Sorry it is long and sad. Hope you all have a good evening. I must go supervise the burial of Mr. Cat. He is in a much better place and will be warm this winter.
JB
Here he is, may he rest in peace.
Oh JB, I am sorry for you and the kitty. I love any kind of animal, except snakes, if you want to call them an animal. My heart always goes out to anyone with a problem animal, or one that is sick. Poor things, cant tell us what is wrong we just have to guess. My little GSP will be here Monday nite at 11:47 via Horizon Air. We have decided to make a trip of it and go up Monday after it warms up, and hopefully clears the roads, stay overnite, and come home the same time. Maybe all will be fine, and I am worring for nothing. Will send pics, if anyone want to see him. We call him Mr. Purple for now, til we meet him. He had a purple collar on. Have not come up with a German name yet.
Love that Maple, wish it would grow here. Don't know what my hibiscus is, bought it at Wally, so I would suppose it is a tropical, have been bringing it in for 3 or so years, it is about 5 ft tall. The oleanders are a little taller, hopefully I can save them, however it isn't looking so good. The SPV is from ones I found at the local greenhouse this year. Had to pay 7$ for the 6" pot of them, but got quite a few cuttings from each, so guess it was almost worth it.
Wish I could just take off and come down to V, but my other two puppers may not see the humor in it. Maybe it could work out for this summer? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Take care all, stay or get well, ttyal Lee
Oh JB, such a beautiful little animal. Looks just like my Hobo.
Do you suppose a neighbor or someone is using poisons of some kind? Maybe for rats and she got one that was contaminated? That would be terrible. You might call them and ask. You don't want to lose more that way.
That is why I will not have any antifreeze on my property except in the vehicles. I lost a dog to antifreeze one year. It was before we moved over here and we had antifreeze in the toilets so they wouldn't freeze. As soon as the door was opened the dog got to the toilet to get a drink before anyone got in here to flush them. A very painful death.
Did the vet come out? Or were you able to catch him before he got there? If so, did he look at the cat and give you an idea of how it died?
Well, gotta get busy. Today is Bob's birthday, maybe I should make him a cake or something. A cupcake. LOL, or muffins. I like those. Guess I will go see what I have in there. ttyl
We crossposted Lee. I would love to see pictures of this dog. Mr Purple huh?? Might as well. You know it is really hard coming up with original names for animals when you go to register them.
When we got my mom a little mini doxie she spent a long time thinking and thinking about an original name. Came up with McDuff. She just knew that was a one of a kind. Well, she sent the paperwork in and guess what? Yup, there was already a McDuff registered. LOL, who'd a tho't?
You might google German dog names and even tho they are probably used, they might give you ideas for one not on the list.
Well, better go find something to make Bob a birthday biscuit. LOL
JB I am so sorry to hear about the loss of mr cat. Jeanette had the same thought I did as we as plant growers tend to put out poision and not really think about the mousers around the farm area. its tough to loose an animial even if its a barn cat. you get to know their personality and come to expect to see them.
I would gladly give it to who ever I can as its not a good one. yes I got the shot but its been well over 6 weeks I think so i believe it was one of my nieces friends who gave it to my wife and then she gave it to me and now I need to give it away.
Jeanette I would love to get some seed or hardwood cuttings of the blood maple. I will have to look it up to see it again.
well time for hot tea and bed again
ttfn
Well, I am inside from the continuing garage clean-up. I made the mess, so I have to be the one to clean it up.
JB, I am so sorry about your kitty. I had a cat named Edgar. One day he did not come. He was always there when the kids go home from school. I walked the whole neighborhood, of course crying and never found him. A neighbor a few days later said she saw him and he had been hit by a car a few streets over.
I will sign off for a little while because I really have not eaten today and with my cold, I am feeling a little puny.
Peggy, how did you get stiffed by a DGer?
Wow, I am so far behind, I can't remember where I left off or what all you talked about. JB's kitty was precious. One never knows about why animals die too soon. I am sorry it happened.
Dave & Jeanette ~ I have 'Diablo' Ninebark. I believe it is still under patent, but can I propagate it for my own use? Or trade one cutting with Jeanette for hers? Or is a trade considered a sale or a gift, which may still be restricted??
Lee - Sorry, what is GSP? I have not been keeping up very well. Right now kinda' feel like Dave, with the creeping crud, or something like that... I just want to go to bed. I did get my asparagus planted...had to force myself. I still have garlic and ornamental bulbs to do, as I am quite late on this and it is supposed to snow by Saturday.
No Dave ~ I don't want the flu...I may already have it...I have been trying to fight it, but I am not sure who is winning...I hope you feel better soon, too. No, I am not trying to fight with you, just the "flu" or whatever it is trying to attack me.
Sharon ~ Are you and Vern feeling better now? You will probably not get rid of that car. Maybe you need a potting shed or a greenhouse...or both.
Our animals can communicate with us pretty well, except for when something is wrong with them. They just don't know how to tell us.
I like socks, too! I hardly ever where pantyhose or knee highs anymore. My tomatoes got some use on them for ties this year as I cleaned out my closets and drawers. I saved just 2 pairs of ph and no kh's. still, I got tired of odd socks around so I have mostly white crew socks that all match. Then I don't have to scurry around trying to match up those when doing laundry and wonder where odd socks go. I never found out where they went.
I must go now. Feel like doing nothing now. Have a good night everyone.
~ Evelyn
Sorry, Peggy, I have not welcomed you yet. When I came into this group about a year ago or so, everyone was quite nice, and I was rather shy for a while. I am sorry that a DG'r did you wrong. Is there any recourse?
Ok, I cannot type anymore, so I must go, really this time....
E
Evelyn I just knew you would get here when you could. So sorry you have the crud too. Gosh guys, I hope it doesn't come thru the airwaves or whatever. I'm on satellite.
Ok Peg, you are going to tell us what happened. And tell me what that little Bitty is. Looks at least part poodle. Then what? A real cutie.
Dave, I think that is a vine maple that Bob has trained into a small tree. But it doesn't go crazy as a vine. I think they said Douglas Maple. I will have to look that up too. Will let you know. Let me know when the best time for cuttiings are and I will certainly get you some. Even if Bob has to tromp thru the snow to get them. LOL It is suppose to be down in the single digits next week. Oh wow!!
BTW for all you sickies out there, Dave, Evelyn, and??? You have to take care of yourselves when you are not well. That means eating. You need sustenance for strength. You need strength to fight that crud that is getting you down.
Now, using some of Sharon's attitude, listen to Dr. Smith!! You must get over this, since, if you are down a lot that could go into pneumonia!! Can't have that. Next thing would be a hospital visit as in ER!! Take care.
Jeanette aka Dr Smith (Sharon)

OK, Jnette, what do you mean "Sharon's Attitude". Oh I forgot, I do have an attitude. But it mostly stayed hidden unless you push one of my buttons. I think there are 5 buttons. Push one of those, you had better duck.
I will be back soon.

Sharon, used that word, "attitude" because I couldn't think of the one I really wanted. Sorry if I pushed the wrong button. LOL, luv ya. Jeanette
Wait a minute!! Didn't I sound like you in that last paragraph???
Yes, you sound just like me. That is really scary. To bad you are a Democrat......ROTFLOL......
Now, let's keep it clean!! LOL
Wow, my last message didn't take.
Sharon, or any of you, look at this: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1140246/
This is so cool.
Evelyn, I found out what was happening to my socks that kept disappearing. It was the neighbor's dog a dalmation pulling them off the clothes line. Needless to say, I no longer have a clothes line.
JB, Three of us were stiffed by a DGer all in November. She finally answer one of my Dmails and said she had mailed a box to me about 3 weeks ago. In the meantime she had been in the hospital. I give her the benefit of the doubt. She never acknoweldged receiving my box. Dmail me if you want more info!
Bitty, is a party poodle that a young girl sold to me since she was getting married and didn't have time for Bit. Party Pooldles are poodles with 2 or more colors. Just google party poodles; you won't believe how beautiful they are. The only thing is I didn't pay the going price. I was just finishing Chemo and my hubby found her for sale in the newspaper. The rest is history.
Oh forgot one thing. Bitty loves to get onto DG. She sits on my lap the whole while.
No she is not spoiled.....just a little BIt.
Evelyn GSP is my new German Shepherd puppy. He will be flying in on Monday night.
Mornin all:
from what i read the Douglas maple is a small tree not a vine acording to the plant files. small tree's are under 30 ft tall in case you were wondering.
I did find this one thats so kool

look at the ladybug swarm...how intense is that?

Dave
wow a flying dog.... lol just being silly. where do the wings hide?
Well Dave, you appear to be in good spirits today. So glad you are back.
Peg, I will dmail you because we all should know who to avoid.
Lee, I am so glad for you and your new puppy. Sorry he cannot come out and see the show girls. We want photos the minute you stop hugging him.
Our weather is again in the 70s but cooler weather is just around the corner.
My cold is trying to come back so I am taking it easy today. I have a manicure and Pedicure at 1:30. Yes Jnette, you told me so.
The landscaper took my wheel barrel to fix the tire in their shop. Big shop. Big company. Came back with a brand new tire that will not go flat. No charge. He said the owner said enjoy. I have a full size wheel barrel and I love it. I got it one year for Christmas. Another story over hot tea.
Jnette, did you get snow. Kids woke up in Spokane this early am to snow.
Evelyn, you should be getting rain according to the weather channel.
Another photo of GD Hannah. She went to visit Pearl Harbor.
His wings are kept in his suitcase along with his halo :) Only come out to get to mama and papa. He won't need them again for a long long time.
Lee
Yes, we got snow off and on all day but the ground isn't cold enough for it to stick. After next week tho, that will be another story. Suppose to get down to 9 degrees Wednesday. Isn't that sick?
We went out today and wrapped my maple and ninebark tubs with R13 insulation and plastic so it won't get wet and then put them up against the house. Hopefully they won't freeze this winter. I guess we had better mulch a few more plants. Thought I had enough done.
Sure would be nice if we would get some snow, maybe a foot or 2 would work, before it gets too cold.
I have a lady coming in the morning to give me a bid on painting my living room, hallways and dining room. Will do bedrooms next summer. Hope she does a good job. I have 28 foot high windows in the livingroom that have some painting around them. She said heights don't bother her. She used to paint with her husband who was a professional painter for 25 years, but he got tired of it and changed jobs. He works nights so she does jobs herself if they aren't too big. Like whole houses she said. But, I don't have many ceilings which would be the hardest besides the heights on the windows, but the ceilings are only 8 footers in the hallways and diningroom.
I used to do all of that stuff myself but my arthritis just won't let me get my arms up there any more. Plus, it would be nice to have it done professionally. Bob is too messy. He drives me crazy with his painting.
Dave, you are right. I asked Bob and he said no that maple was not a vine. A tree about 20 feet tall. But you know, I looked at the Douglas Maple in plantfiles and I don't think that looks like this one at all. I don't know what they were looking at. However, I just remembered that the Forestry guy that came out and cruised my property for logging about 10 years ago told Bob what it was so I am going to get his report out and see if he said in there what it is. He listed most of the trees in his report. Since Bob pointed it out to him and asked him what it was, he may have included it in his report. Will let you know.
Attentioon: All of you who are worried I did not follow up with the Cardiologist appointment.
January 8th is the day of my appointment. Darn good thing I ain't dying. LOL
I went to the doctors office and picked up my test results and my old test results. I looked before I left the office and you might have known, the dumb b**** who gave me such a hard time didn't get it right. I found my regular nurse and she got me everything I needed in about ten minutes , apologized because they never told her I had called and she was livid. She went to the other girl who works with my doctor and told her and between the two of them, when I got there yesterday, you woulld have thought I was the Queen of England. Everyone was walking on egg shells and waiting for me to explode, which I did not do.
I did however inform them I am trying to decide if I am changing doctors. I got the name of the new Office Manager and they will hear from me about JoAnn.....It is time she retires. I only have one button to push and it has been pushed.
Who ever said someone stiffed them on DG, please dmail me with the name. I just got an order today for plants I have not even put up yet.. They are there but the amount of "0" because they are not quite ready. Some people just do not read the darn things properly.
Talk later, must run into town. JB
I have found all of my many trips to my Cardiologist, heart surgeon and my 6 heart hospital visits and 4 heart related surgeries have been pleasant and I have been treated like a Prince. Pleasant in terms of personal relations with the staff. The pain of being split open twice for 5 bypasses wasn't plesant. I love my cardiologist and heart surgeon. The two men responsible for me still being alive. Blame them for my story of my modern medical miracles. I love em.
JB, good thing for you that you wrote that this morning, 'cause I was just getting ready to blast you about it since we hadn't heard. Yes, you know, I always figure if they can wait that long then it is nothing major.
Wildcat, nice to have you amongst us!! I have a couple of those that I owe also. Not for heart, but other, so I know what you mean. Modern medicine is great, but you know, my h always reminds me that if I hadn't had such good insurance I wouldn't be among the living.
Now isn't that a sad commentary??
Well, got the painter lady coming soon so I better get off here.
Good for you JB. Wildcat--you better be checking in each day so we know all is well. That is comming from Mom#2. Yea, JB, I know you are #1. Pretty cold here with several inches of snow, Say it will be worse for the weekend, more snow. Monday will bring colder weather great for traveling.....not!!! It is about 3 degrees rite now, and supposed to be below zero for the next week. Sharon, V is sounding better and better :) Look out my friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!
