Hello to everyone and welcome:
To those new to our little chat. Plese feel free ask anything, as we try to keep it simple and fee l/we should always pass along our own knowledge. Lurkers are also welcome. Please check in if possible I would hate to loose someone in one of these switches.
We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1136367
As with all of the threads I stat I like to welcome anyone new to our little corner of Daves Garden. Please take the time to read all the past threads. Most of them have some great information in them. There are no dumb questions except for the 1 thats never asked.
Anyone new I highly recomend reading the propagation how to 1/4 of the way down the first incarnation of this thread.we have evolved to a mix of good people having fun and discussing issues we are having at the moment. if you need individualhelp just dmail me I am always glad to help.
Here is the 1st post http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/892721/

Dave
thank you for the intrest and welcome
Plant Propagation part XIV based on my own experience
Jeanette: are you using just normal day light or day length???? plants respond to day length. Mums flower on a response to days getting shorter. Other plants that respond to day length the Thanksgiving cactus, christmas cactus (yes there are 2 different ones). asters and I am sure if I got to looking there are a lot more.
Just a thought you might put a light on a timer for it. as being a tropical I would think a 12 hour day would be a good place to start. what do the brug folks say??? the ones you sent me are tight on the ole tug test. I am moving them into the little room along with the plumeria. I don't think they like being out in the main part of the garage. I think I will set them on my little heat mat also to help them get a move on. they seem to be breaking out growth buds which is always a good sign.
Ok to answer the questions.... my nieces are 16 and 18 with birthdays in Dec & Jan. The oldest started college this fall at one of our state junior colleges with on site houseing. we did not think she would do well at the 4 year schools just yet. its just gen ed at the moment. her plan is to go on to optomology and get her doctorate. The younger 's grades are greatly improved since dad moved out. she has 4 a's 1 c and one F. she knows its all on her to get the grades up or figuire out how to get summerschool arranged (rides and pay for). I always was responsable for my own school work and it makes no sese (spelling?) to have to ride her about it. she is in tutoring and is 4 points off of a D.
The state has a scholarship where if you go to high school here and have a 2.5 GPA (C average) they give $$$ for college. the amount is on a sliding scale based on grades. The oldest barely got the scholarship, but we only had influence for 2 years with her. she started with a 1.1 her junior year. They both recognize the difference in life if they don't go to college and succeed. Its a better life vs "would you like fries with that" Don't get me wrong a lot of good people make a nice life working at those places, I just want more for them. And yes they know who is behind them and who could care less. When the oldest needs to chat she calls me, not dad.
my SS is 31. we decided to get the breaks done professionally as I like to have someone to yell at. We hope to get him back in school soon as he has had his play time and knows he needs a better package to offer employer's.
sorry about getting off track. its just really buged me and I needed to vent.
Thanks for listening
Dave
Guess I am one of the lurkers that just likes to read and still has to work for a living. Won't be much longer though.
Plants for peg, welcome. We are a little nutty but adorable and lovable. And we do not little about gardening. I do not think w have anyone in La on this thread so jump right in and enjoy youjr self.
Dave, you rant all you want. We are cheaper than a shrink.
I am shutting this down, I have a full day ahead of me. Later friends.
I also welcome you. We stand up for one another, and when the going gets tough, we are there for venting or listening.
Mom's house sold yesterday, so that is off my mind, pretty sad tho, thinking of someone else living there after all these years.
Have started thinking of starting seeds. Not sure what I will do this year, not enough room to do much after all the wintering over I am doing. And, note I said started :)
Anyway, just thought I would let you know, you can't get away from me. I am like a bad penny, I just keep showing up!!!!!!!!! hehehe
Lee
Up Up and Away all you Western Folk.....I am about to call it a day and you are just getting started. Get your old butts moving.......hear me Dave?????That means you too.
Hello to our new friend from Ventress, LA....how nice of you to come in. This is not a normal forum, but, as abnormal as we are, we have a lot of good information to share and we love sharing. I am the old lady of the group but the rest are catching up with me quickly.
Hello Jen, to answer your question, NO I did not make a doctor's appointment today because I still have not received my report from the hospital or the doctor's office. LOL
So there. Not my fault... YA YA YA
Hello to the rest of the Wild and Wooley group, here is some info for you.
About the Christmas Cactus....If you are CC lovers as I am, you may want to read these
http://en.wikipedia.org/wili/Holiday_Cactus
http://www.cactuscollection.com
http://www.humeseeds.com/xmasccts.htm
I have loads more but these answer many questions we have discussed here in the past posts. If you can not open them and want to, please let me know and I will cut and past for you. Enjoy! I have a greenhouse full of four colors just now and they are all in bud.
As for my house, I have 10 different colors that I am babying along to be stock plants. I am going to specialize in CC in the future because of space and my lack of energy at times. I also will do the gardenias and Jasminum ,but they get so big so fast it is difficult to sell them as starters each year so I have found another outlet for them here when they get too big to ship.
Do coyotes eat cats? Someone told me today maybe that is what happened to my twins. I hate to think that. I did not know we had coyotes, but I do know the State has been relocating some of them instead of killing them..........who needs that? Something is moving my cat bowls around but I thought it was a possum or coon.
It is dark already and I am getting ready to fold laundry. See you tomorrow. Love you. Hugs. JB
of course I am thinking seeds at the moment I am looking at all my seed options before I settle into one fluid thought. I did put an offer on ebay for some seeds of grass some one listed having 10 of. I did one batch of them last year and they came out fine and upto 6" pots. of course i have a whole bag full of other seeds to get planted as yet as well. mostly flowering perienials nothing in the annual area. I am also determined to make my popies grow as well. I never seem to be able to get them to germinate. I am thinking about doing the wet towel trick to see why I fail so much.
Have a great evening
Dave
OK......all these welcomes are luring me in.
I too have a large Christmas Cactus which is in buds. We no longer have the Choc. Lab that use to swich her tail and break off all my buds. We do miss her though. When it blooms I'll try to post a picture. It is a rich pink color. We are still having great weather, but just have not had time to plant any of my seeds yet. Hopefully this weekend.
Peg!! You just rang JB's bell. LOL, You are her friend forever.
Welcome! We don't have anyone on here from way down there. What are you, zone 9 or 10? This will be interesting.
Don't you believe it. That "old lady of the group" out works us all. I think you are only as old as you feel and she b-----s a lot, but doesn't mean any of it. Just likes to her herself complain.
And JB, maybe when I grow up I will like Christmas Cactus. You still have me stuck on gardenias. I am trying to revive my Aimee.
Dave, I am so happy your brugs have passed the 'TUG' test. I remember you talking about your Mychorrizae mix. I never found any of the ingredients except that. Not the rest. Will my Root Blaster help? Maybe add some of my Mychorrizae too?
I still have a Salmon Perfection that is not rooted in the bubbler. I put an HPS bulb on them, I had the Metal Halide on the other plants, maybe that will help them. Or do you think the wrong bulb is worse than no bulb at all?
I
Nice to see you joining this truely wacky crew Peg.
JB, thanks .... I new there had to be a trait that we all possess that makes us bond ... abnormal.
I have been in a horrible funk all weekend. On Saturday, the dog do-do finally hit the fan when grandson who lives with me broke my new toy. Royality ticked me off not to even hear a sorry. I have been only asking him to do things that are extremly hard on me to do ....mainly because he grumbles and complains when fulfilling my requests.
I was so depressed I started to cry. I finally called his mom and vented.
Sunday, my daughter and her significant other came over. It was determined that my new toy could not be repaired. I asked if the significant other could look at the snow blower that my grandson was unable to start last winter when we had so much snow. It seems the only problem with the snower blower was NO FUEL.
Last night, I really laid into the grandson. Told him he had to replace my new toy with one that worked ... where to buy it .... and all the things that were ticking me off ... and if he ticks me off again he is OUT the door.
Today, he had replaced the broken toy and had a much better attitude.
There is a saying .... give them an inch .... they will take a mile. ..... and see nothing wrong with doing so.
I had to give him a reality check by putting him in his place.
I have so much to do before leaving next Tue (early AM) ... flying to North Carolina to be with daughter and her family for a week.
I am gearing up for winter sowing that I think I will start in mid January.
MARY
I am in zone 9 and everything I am propagating is doing fine except the Hibiscus seeds I planted. I must have skipped a very important step somewhere along the way. I'll just try it again until I get it right.
We are having 50 degree nights and about 70 degree days with lots of good rain tonight so there's nothing to moan about.
I want to plant some coneflower seeds soon since I have so many that I collected over the summer. Hopefully they too can squeeze into the greenhouse.
Merrymath: You should have been with us this past weekend. Our son got married in New Orleans. I am still chuckling about their friends. It is great to see such a close knit group that are so happy and have all done great things to further their education. I am proud of them all.
Merry, how old is your grandson? Why is he living with you?
You can send him my way. I would love his help even if it is half way. I feel Sugar goes way further than vinegar. You sound like a school teacher. A bully school teacher. I was probably like your grandson. I was told off many times by many teachers. I was told many times, "If you do not conform, you will not succeed". Well that was a crock and loved when they brought their children to me for mortgages and advise. I did not go to college. If I had I would not be living in the secure way I am today. ENOUGH SAID.
Dave, I have some Texas Laurel Seeds. I have the other plants dug and ready to send to you and JB. Also, I have sent you a D Mail.
Peg, I assume your name is Peg. I am the hibiscus nut. Hardy Hibiscus and I have tried seed many times with no success. I am going to try the damp towel method like Dave. I also have Tropical but I have to move them in to the garage this week. Cannot use the greenhouse, someone has been stealing things out of there.
JB, my mother loved CCs. She could grow them into huge plants. All I do is kill them. JB, d mail me your doctors name and phone number. I will get you your records, pronto.
I need help. I got on line again and ordered more plants. I am totally crazy.
I just made my annual contribution to the Salvation Army and The Food Bank. Las Vegas unpublished unemployment is around 20%. They published last week in the USA Today that, in Las Vegas, 80% of the homes with a mortgage are up side down. That means they owe more on their home than it is worth. There are whole families, with school age children, that are homeless.
Lee, I have your roots planted but it does not look like they are doing anything. So glad you got your mother's home sold. My mother's home is occupied by renters. My daughter, Tracy got really mad about it. She did not think anyone should live there. We tried to explain to her that with all the gardens, someone had to live there to take care of them. We actually reduced the rent so they would take care of the gardens and they are doing a great job.
I did go to Home Depot today to look at MY Plumeria. They have a dual trunk, 3 inflos. Inflos (sp) are the V shape in the stalk.. It has to make this form to bloom. I have been watching the price. I want it but I do not want to pay $40 for it. I told them today, it will probably be dead the next time I come it and then I am really going to be p****d off. He gave me the, "You actually think I care look".
I have to go Skype my grand daughter in Hawaii. So later friends. Sharon.
Sharon, hopefully they are in the winter state. They always look dead until the weather gets warmer here. If not, I will send more your way once they start growing in the spring. Love that Skype. have watched our granddaughter grow from tiny baby to a 2 1/2 year old terror. What a trip.
Lee
JB, I did not mean you could not handle the ladies in the office. I just meant I have more time because you are so busy with your Christmas Store.
And we cannot catch up to your age unless you stop. That is unacceptable. Sharon.
You guys covered a lot of ground while I was enjoying Phoenix. We had a blast. Yesterday we were admiring all the great desert plants and how nice they looked there and how great the weather was. We slept with the window opened both nights. Came back and apparently it froze when we were there because a lot of my plants were leafed out and doing fine when I left or just starting to look like they may not make it much longer, today I found them dormant and lifeless or dead. My Penstimon, salvias, Cannas and more Hasta la bye bye.
Man I wish I could remember all you said that I wanted to comment on.
Oh yeah, sports fans were going nuts while we were there. The streets are crazy with traffic except yesterday after we got out of the race the streets were barren between the Arizona game that was home and the NASCAR race at the same time. The busiest place was the Buffalo Wild Wings Sports bar where we ate. MMMM!
Lee, isn't it amazing. And it is free. My grandson Luke in Spokane just wants to play with the keyboard than look at Grandma. I will move them into a pot and put them in the garage. The garage is very insulated and I will have Christmas lights surrounding each area to keep the pots warm.
I sent a care package to GD Hannah in Hawaii. I used the large box. The postal clerk said I was saving close to $20 using the flat rate box. She is not coming home for Thanksgiving but will be home right before Christmas. Then next semester, she will be going to BYU in Provo.
Dawn, sounds like you had quite a trip. Hope your plants are fine. Probably just got the tops but the roots will still be good. I loved the desert flowers when we went down there many years ago.
That's right, that game was played there. It was a good game. 'course I would think so since I wanted Seattle to win. LOL, but that doesn't mean the Arizona fans didn't enjoy it too.
Merry, You are so crude to that grandson. I would fight Sharon for him in a minute. I would truly hate to think that your grandson, or mine, was young and had a teacher like you seem to be.
What is your daughter thinking of allowing you any where near him?
Jeanette
Well here is Hannah, having a terrible time today in Hawaii.
Jnette, the thing about Phoenix area is they have more humidity and rain. When you fly from Las Vegas to Phoenix and watch out the window, you can tell when you are getting close to Phoenix. The mountain shrubs all of a sudden turn green instead of brown. They grow beautiful grapefruit there and we cannot grown them. I have great limes and oranges. JB, do you want some home grown limes for your "Gin & Tonic". LOL....
She is a beautiful girl Sharon, but how does she stay so pale in Hawaii? Please tell me she spends a lot of time inside studying. LOL
She is a straight A student and does study a lot of hours. But she is very diligent about using sun screen. Skin cancer is a biggy in the Southwest.
Oh by the way, I did not get one thing done today. Left the house at 11am and returned at 4pm. But I got all my errands done. Tomorrow I have to get the garage cleaned out and rearranged. I have a Board meeting tomorrow evening. See you all tomorrow evening. Love, Sharon.
It will be good for her to be in Provo next year so you will get to see more of her. When the kids grow up and go their own ways it is difficult for them to get back to visit as often as we like.
Tracy, my daughter, and her family live about 5 miles away. I see her about twice a month. She still have 4 children left at home and is one busy stay at home mom.
You are very lucky. Try to follow those grand kiddies when they get into and thru college. Like herding cats.
I always send Hannah a love allowance each month of $100. One month I did not get a thank you and the next month she not no love allowance. Hannah said nothing to me but mentioned it to her mother. Tracy asked me and I said, "No thank you, no allowance". Now I get a written and verbal thank you. I am such a Meany.
Good lesson. I normally get a phone call, which I love because my grandson is a carbon copy of his dad. They do not talk.
I can get him talking about building computer networks when he is here and he talks and it is so cool 'cause he talks so I can understand it, not especially in computer lingo.

Yep it's Peggy with an 18 year old Granddaughter who has been well raised.
None of that sassyness is allowed. It's great to know you can just pick up the cell and call.
Well, for those who have to work....xxxxxxxx
Morning gang, Wow, you really were busy last night. I am tired just reading it. LOL
I only have one grandchild and he is such a good student, he is in mostly advanced classed and has just been inducted into the Spanish Honor Society at his school. He is about 13th in his class of over 400. But, he is a joy boy........loves to play baseball, runs around with his girlfriend( both do Cross Country Running) and he does not do his chores at home like his Mother thinks he should. Every once in awhile Granny has to give him a short talking to which usually ends up we talk foot balll teams and of course I never tell him I like the same team he does and then we argue about players. LOL Seldom see him which bothers me alot. I Take jabs at him on Facebook sometimes to tease him. I think kids today are so different than their parents or grandparents, it would be hard for me to judge what kind of treatment they should have as punishment. I do agree, taking the cash away from them works, no matter how old they are. LOL
..and Jen, my Aimees are all getting brown leaves and falling off. It must be that time of year. Let's hope so.
I will wait one week and if the Doctor's office does not call me I will jump in my little Jeep and make them a visit they will not forget. I am so close to taking all my files and finding a new family doctor. All they do anyhow is refer you to someone else. Jerks.
Time to get to work. Love you all
mornin all:
just finished the marathon of posts.
I did not catch where mary was wrong in her dealing with GS. I know our niece is here to help me and help herself with better schools. i know we have had our issues with her but overall she does a great job of helping me. of course she sees what the other option would lead to.
Mary i feel for you and hope your GS comes around soon. most kids today have no idea how difficult it was when we were kids. they feel like taking the trash cans to the curb is a major ordeal. I wish I had all the electronics and own computer ,tv and other stuff when I was their age. sometimes its like child abuse because you take away their play station or tv for a week.
not doing very well it seems the creeping crud has invaded the house and i will leave it at that.
sorry its takeing so long to address the hardwood cuttings how to. hopefully this will pass. you know I don't feel good when I have bags of dirt and I don't go near them.
take care
Dave
Guys I was only kidding about a cat fight.
Jesus take the wheel. I must have missed something.
Dave, sent you D mail.
I really would like to hear about the hardwood cuttings before I go whacking at the 9 bark. Where would I look for WHEN to cut them?
9 bark is a term I have not heard before.
No cat fight..................we all agree to disagree at times................this is that kind of place. Where else can you spill your guts without looking like a real jerk. No other forum I know of. I have gotten in trouble on other forums for making a statement and was told off big time by completely unknown individuals. My statements were plant related and I remember one man making me feel like a piece of dirt with the way he spoke to me. I had one of the other members come to my defense but I left the group because if you have to weigh your words and watch how you say anything, it is just not fun. I am a serious gardener, but I never would I talk down to someone else who was making light of something without knowing they were doing wrong.
O.K. having said that, why am I here at this time of day. PEDICURE day.....yup. my toenails need attention. 2 weeks passed already. I still have not sold a darn thing this week or last week. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those winters. Oh well, I will have to go back to needle felting or something my arm will tolerate. Later gang.
nine bark is a large shrub/small tree
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55728/
you still have time as hardwoods are done in the frozen and dormant times of the winter. as soon as my head clears from the flu bug I will post the info it might be a day or 2 but i will get er done. you have lots of time.
Oh never heard of it, it must not grow here in this area. Sorry flu season is the pits.
Nine bark is new to me too. If we are discussing hardwoods, I am interested in propagating Bottle Brush and creeping junipers. Hope these will be included in today's lesson.
Have any of you growers considered investing in these trees, they are a new bio fuel and have many interesting uses. I was reading up on them and the idea sounds intriguing? Millettia Pinnata is the name of the tree. Seems to grow in the best and worst areas too.
Do you mean as in putting money in stock of these trees or actually growing them? If the latter, I will tell you about when we decided to see how fast the tree would grow that they were going to use the bark for cancer, can't remember the name. A very common name now. Anyway, about the time we planted some they gave a monopoly to a grower so we would have been stuck with them. Nice trees tho.
Then there was the perfect Christmas tree. No pruning, etc. Can't remember what happened to that one. LOL
You see, if you start growing them, a year or 2 down the road they find something better. Plus, you are stuck with them until they are large enough to harvest. Plus, we are too mountainous. I have logged twice and it is right now at the point I could harvest every 7 years but to me it isn't worth it. After all the costs etc. I don't make enough to make it worth tearing up the landscape for me.
I was just talking to Bob about it and to stay within the 7 years we would have to log again next year. I told him it wasn't worth it to me 'cause what we would we do with it. We don't need it. He says, "buy me some socks." LOL. He is just lazy, not broke.
If Bob needs socks, let me know. We are sock nuts.
I buy them, Vern buys them and then we argue who socks are who's. I finally bought pink and blue socks so he would not wear my socks. Well I was wrong. I think he wore my pink socks just to rock my boat. When I met Vern, he was this very quiet Texas young man and an Engineer. Now he is as crazy as I am but he had to conform or go crazy. I just wish he would get better. We have 30 more years to go. His dad lived to be m95 and my dad was 87. My mother the same. Poor world, I will be around a very long time unless shot.
Got 1/3 of the garage cleaned and worked for at least 8 hours. I had a blast. Put my I Pod on scramble on my boom box and turned it up on very loud and just worked very happily.
Had a Board Meeting tonight and got another big bunch of money approved for more rehab of the landscape. We are on the 15th year so hopefully soon we will be caught up.
Oh My goodness, got my purchases from Annie's today so now I have more plants to do something with. Oh, I love plants but I need about 3 more acres. LOL. I wish I had taken before and after photos of the greenbelt and the entry. We are kicking b**.
Later, I have to go to bed. Very tired. Goodnight friends. Tomorrow.....
