Plant propagation part XXIII based on my own experience

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I wish it would rain like they said it was going to do. It is cold and windy enough for goodness sakes.
How quickly it changes here. Last week was like 90, broke records all over SoCal.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn, We watched the Jesse Ventura programs the first night it was on. It was interesting but not really my cup of tea. Makes you stop and think tho. Wonder.

That is why I wanted to send you a bigger (taller) brug Dawn, because it may not get taller. But, in order to send you the "Y" so it would bloom before too long (depending on where you put it and the conditions) and the post office box is only so long, I had to cut it off. Now what I would do if I were you, is once it grows thru a season is cut a new piece to start a new plant and see how tall it will get before it Ys. Once it Ys it will just keep branching and blooming instead of getting taller.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Dawn ~ I should turn off this computer while I sort my stuff out, as I keep losing a post, then I will go. I just wanted to know to *what* you were referring when you said "biblical prophecy". And, no, I have never seen that show, as we do not have cable or satellite. Still, I do not watch much TV, but I am on the computer way too much, especially when I am trying to get something done. Like tonight!

Jeanette ~ If I were in your shoes, I would at least go to the doc once with Bob, as he might have HBP and supposed to be taking meds for it. Well, who knows? Sometimes they don't always tell us these things.

OK! Now I must really go...good luck JB! We will keep you in our hearts and minds.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Evelyn, the dr. gave him a prescription for a bp med and he filled it a couple weeks ago. The dr. said he wanted to see if it, the med, had any affect on his liver??? He said something about following a trend? No idea what he meant by that.

When I was taking a med for arthritis (anti-inflammatory) any time I had blood drawn for any reason I had them check my kidneys as that was very hard on them. Didn't bother mine. I took them for about 20+ years.

But then when I had a perforated bowel they said they thought that caused it. I don't believe it.

Yes, I am going in with him to see what kind of test it is. I am sure it is just a blood test, but at least I can ask what it is for. Then I will go with him to the dr. apt.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Jeanette ~ The people that take the blood test are not allowed to discuss the reasons. They will tell you to ask the doctor. The doctor can answer your question, however.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

OK, wives, you should all know better, at our age, to let our DH's go to the doctor alone. When Vern was at the Cardiologist, the doctor told Vern he wanted him to start taking a medicine twice a day instead of once. I told him he did not take that medicine. The Dr. said yes he did. I told him I ordered all the prescriptions and he has never had that medicine. He showed me on the chart where he gave Vern the prescription.

Sorry Baby Luke just crawled on to my lap. Later.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Gosh, Sharon...maybe if he took that medicine, he might not have had to get a pacemaker. Hmmm.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Howdy all
just a quick note. yes you should know better than to let us go to the dr alone, especially if you want to know whats going on with a specific issue we are having. We have this mortality fobia and don't like to talk about our medical issues especially if it impotent. Most of the time we are afraid that if you know what are our problem we might end up alone.

Larry The pampas grass I am talking about is from this springs sowing. One issue pampas grass has is the center will die out so every now and then you need to dig out the center and plant a new center part. most of the time its a gallon sized hole. I did have an interesting thought. What if we planted a pink pampas in the center of the white? It would be neat. Yes they are a great home for mice rats and other smaller animals and insects.
Larry I will email you tomorrow on the seeds or plants. I do understand about the keepers not allowing us to get too far out of hand. I am fortunate that I have been able to get half the back yard.
I know they are tough as nails once established. I lost about 6 gallon plants to the winter last year. i think they got too dry.

Tomorrow I will be working on getting the irrigation situated where all i have to do is put a hose on the bib and turn it on. we get the cold spells that will cause the bibs to freeze and then come spring we get a nice flow of water in the house from and lots of flood damage to everything on the floor.

Jb I wondered if the flowers would be a big hassle to do along with flowers. You might check with the local florist shops as I am sure they would apreciate a new source for them to resell. just a thought.

sorry if I missed anyone.dweet streams
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

evelyn: I will email you tomorrow on the Golden Vicary privet. short answer is yes I would lov e to get some rooted plugs from you.
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

oh yea: i remember we used to get what was called Ligustrum sinense which I am still looking for but thats the fun of the hunt. One of my favorite activities is to go look aroud area nurseries and garden centers for different plants

The lab people that draw my blood always tell me what they are taking it for. They do not discuss it with me as first of all they don't know what they show or do not show until they do the lab work on it.

But they DO tell me what they are drawing it for. i.e. Check my kidneys? cholesterol? Vitamin D, Checking Bob's liver? (I am sure they should). Not necessarily what they are looking for either. When I took the anti-inflammatorys I always told them to check my kidneys to make sure there was no damage from them.

Sorry, I erased a very important item here that is truly not for everyone on DG to know. However there is a law (HIPPA) for privacy of your health information. I do believe that wives cannot go in if their husbands don't want them in there. That privacy act is very strict.

And Dave is right. If he did not want Kim to know he was impotent (I am sure in that case she might suspect lol) then he can refuse to let her in the room to discuss with the dr.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

LOL Jeanette: we were talking about imortant things...it was good for a chuckle though.... Of course I always like to dress as I am a very impotent guy. have to dress for success

ok I promise I am going to bed now

Tell me we are still a "plant" propagation forum!

If we are still being monitored I bet they are having a blast with this past few weeks. Oh my God.

Evelyn, My Privet, whatever , is doing so well. It is happy and growing like a weed. I have them all in one 6 inch pot and am wondering when I should move them.

Jen, that HIPPA is a PITA at times. My friends son was unable to get info about her terminal condition until the paperwork was signed. How in bloody hell does a dying person sign a paper giving consent? Now we will see if we are being censored. I just used a bad word again. Well, today is my test day and I have been up since 4"30 stressing over it, I am hungry, want coffee, and my BP is climbing. If it is not soon time to leave I will have some sort of breakdown I am sure. Oh well, you will be able to know when I fail to talk to you later in the day. Humpf. that would just be my luck.

I have decided I am suffering from agoraphobia and panic disorder. At least it is not fatal just yet.m Have a good day guys, I will talk later. JB

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

JB All will be well, you are in our prayers.
Lee

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

yes we are still a propagation forum
I have found it difficult to find new info to cover in the area of propagation. Air layering was a great question which resulted in a great discussion. anyone have anything that is giving them difficulties?
its a beautiful day today except for the wind. 76 degree high with 14 mph winds.

anyone doing anything over the winter? I am planning on doing some seedlings and put them into a cold frame at the 1st of the year to help them harden off. I am still working on getting all the plugs moved to larger pots for the winter.
ok I realize I asked the question but not many really answered the question.
I know sharon is still fighting the retraining of her new landscapers.
JB is burried in christmas trees and wreath's
I am doing some seeds and am toying with the idea of doing some of my artamesia prowis castle.

well pics to follow of my pampas grass

I just repotted all of my house plants, still have to insulate my Japanese Maple in the tub, don't know what to do with the 9 bark? Do I insulate it like the JM or will it be ok? I don't know anything about them.

None of you ever did advise me about pruning the 9 bark?? Guess nobody wanted starts that I would have tried to root if I had pruned it.

Have to finish up on the plants to carry over. I am going to put some bubble wrap over them in the deck box. Can't do much more than I have and will really be p.o.d if I lose them all.

It is raining as usual here and in the 40s right now and will get up to the low to mid 50s. 30s at night.

Gotta get busy, ttyl

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Dave ~ Did the 'Moonlight' broom seedlings die yet? They were not rooted especially the one that I dug out of the gravel. You can see that they are survivors, but sometimes when we remove them they are not happy about it. so please let me know. Right now I am copying the files from the other computer onto DVDs so when they erase my hard drive again I won't feel bad about it. I am sure that I lost some important pictures last time that Steve took of the building of the new garage. I must have missed copying them, as he uses my camera since he rarely wants to take
pictures.

JB ~ Please check in with us when you are up to it after your tests, OK. We are all sending you good wishes...you know that don't you?

Jeanette & JB ~ Yes, the HIPPA law can be more than inconvenient. Especially when we need important info on our loved ones, and they may not have given us written permission.

Well everyone, I must get back to copying files so when I call HP I will be prepared. I have learned to do this first even before calling them. Then, call them early in the day, if possible (maybe tomorrow), as they take a long time to discern if your computer is worthy of returning for repair. The desktop will not dial out anymore for some reason. I re-installed the modem and even checked it according to the protocol and it checks out as working fine, though it is not. HMMM?? Anyone have any ideas before I call? Well we are plant nerds, not computer nerds, well maybe except for JB. She even watched TV on her computer. (I suppose all of you that have high speed could do that.)

It is sunny and partly cloudy after the rain, now it is cloudy again...quite nice and cool. Have a nice day everyone.

Yes, when I was in the hospital my sister, who is a nurse, wanted to see my files and they would let her.

edited to change: They would NOT let her.

Jeanette: I would treat the ninebark like the JM. I would wait for deep winter like january to prune. I would love some hardwood cuttings if you have any to spare.

Evelyn it sounds like the modem has bit the dust. One work around is to install amodem if you have an extra slot to plug one into and bypass the onboard one. in the event they put in a modem card in and not an on the mother-board modem then it should be as easy as unplug the card replace it with a new one and install the software. now with this said hp has its own way of doing things and everything in their computers are programed in under hp speak not simple computer speak.
I know a little about computers I used to repair them and do some basic lessons in south florida. unfortunately most of the info I learned has been lost to medications and short term memory erase. I know it sounds funny but I can easily pull out of my brain my plant knowledge but if I need to do anything with the comuter I pick up the phone. I call it "letting the baker bake" while I grow plants. we all have our special ability, its when we try to overlap abilities with little prepwork we end up shooting ourselves in the foot...well at least I do.

The witches broom I will have to check on as its put in with the rest of the gange. i have an area where i have planted all my little experiments. that way I can watch them and not pull my hair out looking for it.

Here is a pic of the overgrown pampas grass that I cut the roots and planted them in my new 6" x 4" pots. this pic shows how the plugs were stacked ontop of a plug tray that failed to grow. the roots grew through the tiny drain holes and took over the whole cell.

I am guessing we will need to discuss hardwood cuttings in the next eveloution of the thread. I am still learning this my self so please bear with me. most of it will be based on what I have read and what I have found works for me.

Jeanette: Did they ask your permission? if they did not then acording to the word of the law they could be held accountable for allowing others to see your records.

Yup that's pampas grass alright.

I am melting suet for the birds. Anyone got any special recipes they like for woodpeckers? I put peanut butter, corn meal, raisins, huckleberries, oatmeal, sunflower seeds, (black oils) I don't buy the regular bird seed. Too much millet that they don't like.

These are also for chickadees and nuthatches, and of course the blue jays. Right now. I get the hooded Oregon juncos and grossbeaks later on.

Would like any suggestions. Thanks

Hello wild ones: This old lady is back from the stress test and it was to say the least different. I went to a hospital called Deborah Heart and Lung Center, which is just a few miles down the road from Ft. Dix and McGuire and they have enlarged it to acomodate the military as well. They now have an emergency entrance, etc. Anyhow, they treat you like royalty. You are never alone, they explain everything, they walk you through it step by step. i must tell you, it was not a bad experience at all. I was not only impressed but relieved.
When I got there I registered (they unfortunately had over 300 patients today and were running about 45 minutes late to start). During the wait, it is pleasant and comfortable.
You register then go immediately to the Nuclear Testing Area. There you check in and yoj are met by a technician who explains it all to you, then takes you to a small room and starts the procedure by inserting an IV. She injects you with the first shot and gives you a big glass of ice water to drink while you go sit with your family and wait 40 minutes.
Your 40 minutes are up and they come and get you and take you to the scanning room where this big thing is sitting. A gigantic machine that turns around you and it takes 20 minutes to hit all the areas of your heart. Your head is out and the room is cool and the technician talks to you and tells you how much time you have left. If she ask me once she ask me a dozen times, "are you o.k., Jacquie"? After that, you go Pee again, and then they take you go drink more water and sit another minutes. They have now put you in another room and hooked you up to the stress test machine and they get you ready for the BIG shot. It is like being on death row I swear, the way they prepare you for that shot. Anyhow, she explained everything, talked, ask me questions, just to keep me from stressing out, etc. Then the Cardiologist came in and showed me the screen to watch my BP, ask me some questions and then gave me the shot. I felt a weird feeling like my knees were getting weak, but nothing else, and about 4 minutes later we were finished. They unhooked me and gave me more water and waited another 30 min. Then they took the second set of pictures, another 20 minutes in the scanner. Said I was finished and I went to Mcdonalds and ate French fries. I don't believe I did that, but I was so hungry I could have eaten the butt out of a dead rat. I had not eaten for about 18 hours and I had a caffine headache that would quit and a coke and a cheeseburger was all I needed...........also the fries. So, I survived, the results will be faxed to me by Wednesday.
The fact I walked out of there without them wanting to admit me was a plus. I will go from there. I have no clue what the heck they found, but I am so relieved. If anyone you know has to go for a Nuclear Stress Test, please assure them it is not really all that bad. But, you drink alot of water and Pee alot. Can you believe this is just another learning experience and as I grow older they get more exciting. Hugs to all of you and thanks for your support. I was really a PITA I know, but I was scared of the unknown. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Good grief JB, when do you go for the moon landing?? That is what it sounds like. They can't do any more than that for anything. I sure would be interested in what ALL they could find with a test like that. Maybe I will google it. Was there a name for the test? Or if I google the name of the institute will it say? Is that the only thing they do? What were 300 people doing? Were they all taking that test? How many of those machines did they have????

And they will know by Wednesday? They send it to you or your dr? Strange that they would send them to you. How are you suppose to know what they mean? Will it be in a language you can understand or a lot of medical jargon?

Very interesting. Glad you made it thru it. If you weren't stressed before, I would be just looking at it. Very amazing. Wonder what that test costs.

Have a good nite's sleep.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Whew! Thank goodness! So happy...we are all doing the happy dance!!

Me too, JB, Me too. Relax now and get some of the rest you missed out on.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Congrats JB. I am so glad it was no big deal. sounds like the dr's in your area have gotten a good system going and it works.
Do you glow in the dark now????
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I just got a chucle... is it just my eyes or does it look like the results were sent to dr strange in jeanette's post???? sorry couldn't resist
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, with a test like that they should send the results to Dr. Strange. LOL

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

JB ...I am glad that your testing is over. You would not have enjoyed today's weather. when I left this morning (around 9am) to do my volunteering the weather was fairly nice.

I had planned to do some outside work this afternoon .... but when I left the school a little after 1 pm ... it was sprinkling .... I hope it was just a short display of the Spit we experience during the summer .... by the time I arrived at my house it seem to let up .... made myself a cupof coffee and went outside to do some work ....it was cold! and it started to rain softly ... if it had been a warm rain I might had headed to the garage to get it more organize ... but I felt a chill to the bones .... so into the nice warm house and took a very long nap.

DAVE .... I have a question that I hope you can answer.

I have a pin oak in my back yard that has only shed a few of its leaves. Most of the other oaks in the neighboring yards have either shed all or at least 80% of their leaves. Why is my oak refusing to shed its leaves?

Question for all .... anyone interested in azaleas?

Mary

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Sunset has a new growing zone system and takes more into consideration. It separates desert from the humid south.

The USDA zones are about average minimum temperature, which is just one aspect of the plant's environment.

Sunset climate zones take into account more factors, like how often if gets cold and how long it stays cold and elevation and how close the ocean is. So they may really be more useful.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

They are in California Merry, that is for sure. That is why my name is hell in zone 11 and not in zone 8b or 9a. lol.
I have to go get the Brugs and bring them in there is going to be a freeze tonight and it is freezing out there.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

You are lucky you don't have to do that for the next 6 months Dawn.

Thanks for the new garden zone Merry, that is about right, but doesn't do much good if nobody else goes by it. Do you think Ag will use it? They don't seem to like anyone else's stuff. They always want to be the first.

I love the azaleas Merry, but don't think there are very many that will make it here.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I slept really good when I slept. But I was still up several times going to the bathroom. They tell you to flush several times to get the radiation out of your toilet. LOL.. If you want to look up the test it is called a Persantine Stress test with Thallium, or the hospital called it a Vasodilator Nuclear Stress..............anyhow, there are several types of meds used and the Persantine is the one that gives you the stress part. Deborah Heart and Lung Center has many departments and treat children with heart and lung disease as well. They have a website. www.Deborah.org.
They have just opened an emergency room staffed by the Lourdes Health System Physicians and the cases that come into the emergency room that are not heart and lung cases get sent to the Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden . Deborah is a private hospital that has been around for years and have an excellent reputation. The have just opened a section for vascular surgery where they perform Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair. this repairs aneurysms, etc. They have grown over the years and most of all, they make you feel safe and special when you are there.
I am sure the 300 patient yesterday were NOT all for stress tests. LOL.
I hope I have answered all your questions. I need to get busy. I am so far behind I have cuttings to plant.. Hugs. JB

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I don't have to what for the next 6 months Jeanette.
Brugs were brought in and are sitting in the morning sun in a window sill.

In the desert the Sunset Western Gardener guide is like the Bible of Gardening here. Those who are into gardening and care to choose plants wisely, use it. The USDA zones don't help me for crap, they would have me growing a lot of plants that would never make it in my sun or in our frozen winters. I lost a lot of plants just due to that, when I first started gardening and zone busting in 1994.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Hugs and prayers for you JB. Gotta go to work now. Have a great day amigos and amigas.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn, THAT. Hauling them in and out. Even my daughter in zone 8 did that for several months. Not every day and night. She did it to use the hose to spray the aphids off once a week. I finally convinced her that was the best way to get rid of the aphids. So once she tried that a couple of times she couldn't believe it took her so long to try it. But it meant hauling them out and you have to remember some of hers were 8 ft tall. But I didn't hear much complaining about aphids after that.

You don't mind it too much if they are actually doing something. Growing and possibly blooming. If you were to leave them in a window where they got sun I'll bet you would get blooming with those as soon as they get a root system. But you need to remember once they get a good root system they want water and fertilizer.

I wouldn't fertilize now until they do get some roots tho.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

GOOD MORNIN:
yes we missed my question why is water wet???
Not much to add today. just a day getting stuff done around the house. trying to get my room better organized so I can water the 2 trays of tropicals witout pulling them all out every week just to water. Its just a matter of putting some stuff I will never in a hondred years get to before summe 2011.
Jeanette: I mixed in my foliar feed and terantula/pirahana/mycorhyza soil drench. I would think it would help them tremendously.
my DW has me listing london fog trench coat she cant wear on ebay. I think it is a good time to list my jewelers tools also. wish me luck as i will need it. a finicky group those ebay buyers are.
I will check back in tater
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I was wondering if you all ever went on the brug forum. Those people are very helpful. When I was trying to grow brugs I spent more time watering and using tomato fertilizer than any other plant I had. I went crazy moving them around, I finally planted them in the field and left God take over. I ended up giving them to my friend who got me started on them to begin with and I must say, I do not miss them. I envy anyone who gets them to bloom and has the room to keep them, time to cut them back and fertilize them and all that crap. There are few plants as beautiful when they bloom.

The SeedLiving site that I was going to sell on just threw me a curve. They have a very difficult way of pricing for shipping. I was unable to to it their way and so I had to ask them to close my account. They even put a houseplant section in for me, but there is no way I can calculate shipping to fit their way of doing it. I am stupid I guess, but I still do not understand it and gave up trying. So much for that short lived friendship. LOL

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

JB I would say you are anything but stupid. if you have difficulty with their site others will too and it will die a slow death unless they fix the issue. did they even bother to ask what the problem was?
