Tropical plant for a new thread.
Santalum paniculatum, Hawaiian Sandalwood.
Tropical Garden # 84
I gotta have that one! Sheesh!
Santalum paniculatum generally grows in mesic to dry montane to sub-alpine habitat. Many folks here try to cultivate it, but are usually unsuccessful.
A related species, Santalum ellipticum is more widespread and grows in less restricted conditions. It may be an easier plant to cultivate.
Sandalwood trees are parasitic and must be grown with a host tree to be successful.
So, kinda like a Mistletoe? Gee, I have an elm tree... I bet they are not cold hardy. Right?
Growing Sandalwood is difficult, but possible.

Well, you have my interest here.. I like that parasite.. LOL I just have to figure out if it can start off here outside or inside.. Looks like a young tree could, but haven't a clue about a seedling.

MJ , plz get me one! you luck!
tried to post a few others, but the pic won't appear....maybe later
OH my , hubby just loves those things. I told him NO. LOL
Were you still wanting any salvias? I have your package ready to go, please tell me you said you wanted some. Thanks.
Oh yes, I had forgotten. They were varg or speckled, right?
So pretty!
Yes, I thought you and MJ had wanted the omaha gold and the "splash" the cuttings are already rooting in the bag.
I can't wait until my Lady Margret gets that big. She is happily climbing all over the place downstairs. I had to cut the chalice vine and passies down to bring in. I am trying cuttings of the pieces that had to be "broken" Here is hoping.
Debra,
Yes on the Salvia cuttings ( silly girl, of course LOL) Lady Margaret roots readily for me in straight vermiculite, key is temperature, and humidity. in the greenhouse over the summer it even rooted in water. in about a week. Wish they all were that easy.
Rachel, Yes it was fun, but I was very conservative, bought some supplies Lava and grey rock for potting orchids, some hangers, and I got 1 Hoya mindorensis. Prices were pretty high for a "Sale"...as there are lots of things I want. I may stop back by there tomorrow on my way home, I'm judging a small dressage show close by tomorrow. I really really want a Jewel Orchid,
But !!! I spoke with George, and he told me I could stop by anytime. He said they weren't really advertising it but are now open to the public. It used to be wholesale only. Course you know, that could be a "good thing" or a "bad thing" depending on how you look at it ......lol
Oh, and your cutting is "cooking", had to redo it .
Hello Everyone!
GAirl1066, those orchids are Georgeous! I know that I will try to grow them next year.
RachelLF,that is a very good picure of your Lady Margaret.
We got chased back home by Hurricane Richard. I did not get a chance to go exploring into the Jungle where we can find the cool unusual plants. The beach is very pretty and the water is usually clear. I did not have time to go swimming or diving for lobster either. I did spend most of my time trimming and weeding my yard, the bushes were growing into the electrical lines and covering the stairs.
This is a view of the villiage of Placencia, which was made famous in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the narrowest Main street in the world ( it is a sidewalk), now it looks like a little Florida.
OOOO rita, LOVE those pics. Is that a vacation home? Do you rent it out? Did you say it was in Belize? My husband has been wanting to go there for several years now, mostly to scuba dive. But guess what, he doesn't scuba dive....LOL.. keeps saying hes going to learn how. LOVE the sunshine tree and the red mussaenda. I just bought one and I hope it grows fast. I have the yellow one and love it.
GAGirl1066, thanks, I would advise anyone to not spend any time in Belize City, the surrounding islands and villages are much more desirable and a pleasure to visit.
My little house is not equipped for rental. That is funny about your DH. Mine used to SCUBA dive but always prefered snorkeling, it is just as enjoyable without so much equipment.
Ahh Rita, thank you so much for all the lovely pictures from your part of Belize. Your place in Placencia is very beautiful and I remember when I visited Belize several year's ago...two precious little boy's tried their best to show me how to snorkel. Precious memories.
mjs, I hope you had a great time being a "judge" today and thanks for confirming a name for my newest Passiflora. Which vine is cooking that I sent you? I can replace it if needed.
Welcome home, Rita.. I wouldn't have wanted to leave there at all.. Beautiful! I felt like I was on vacation while looking at your pictures, it felt good.
Got everything in except: Queen Emma, Rangoon Creeper, a few tropical milkweeds and a couple chichis. My DH and DS helped me today bringing in the huge tubs of brugs. Flamenco didn't fit down the stairs, and she is still blooming, so she stays up here for awhile. Pardon my mess, I promise to clean up before Thanks Giving!
