Plant propagation part XXII based on my own experience

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

JB ..... I hope all those pretty babies survived the horrible summer we had with so little or for the most part no rain.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

And another in June. Unfortunately many of those little guys died because of the intense heat and lack of rain.

Mary, you have a big job to do.......get it done now before the winter sets in.

Just came from a carved pumpkin display at my neighbor, the Byrne Farm Market....it is the most beautiful and clever display I have ever seen. The daughter who runs the place is so creative and I was overwhelmed at the clever things they did. They made an alligator our of pumpkins and have an entire display of pumpkins with grasses and weeds in different designs. I must go back tomorrow and take pictures.

Phone ringing. Later.

Good afternoon or is it evening?
jb send me a couple of christmas trees ...ummm blue spruce 8' but the freight has to be cheap....lol
all kidding aside. I don't think giving us a link to your site is a no no. as its pretty tough to order via the mail. Great pics too.
we spent the day shopping of all things. 6 hours on the go..... geeze ...I was wiped out
tomorrow is transplant day. Lots of things to move up for the winter grow. yea I know it sounds funny but I have planted cuttings this late and ended up with rooted cuttings in spring. Its strange how mother nature works is a mystery.

What color phlox are you looking for? I will have emerald blue and emerald pink. i am hopeing to get some Candy Stripe
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/49968/
also another color to balance out the pack.

well not much else to say
Dave

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I got half of what I needed to get done. I wore out and it started to rain. The temp got down in the mid 70s and I got cold. I get cold if it gets below 80.

I got 4 new cannas planted and a large amount of violets. I have three boxes in the garage that got here yesterday. I will unpack tomorrow and water. Then plant on Monday.

Vern is still doing fine. He has baseball, football and he just watched the NASCAR race. He needs to get off the couch and move around but that will not happen until baseball World Series is over.

JB, you are adorable. I love your hair. I have very fine hair.
If I had my hair that short, I would look bald. How tall are you? I see what you mean when you need to go mow. That is a big bunch of land. And I do not see you as chubby. I also am not chubby. Just healthy.

Merry your back porch needs a rocking chair. I got mine 4 years before I retired. I got monthly job offers and I always told them I was not going anywhere from Chase unless it was to my rocking chair and it was already on my back porch waiting for me. My grass is not grass. It is dichondra and clover. It helps because the dogs urine does not kill it and it does not need to be mowed every week.

The CEO, of you know who, made $550 million in income between 2000 and 2006. That was in the New York Times. today. And Bank of America paid all his attorney's fees. Unreal.

We just had popcorn for dinner. I need to cook tomorrow.

Dave, I am going to plant my double bloom oleanders in my holding garden and protect from the cold. It is totally protected from the wind. All I have to do it keep them partially warm. We very seldom freeze. Just enough days to kill the tomatoes and then it warms up again. After this summer, how are we going to guess what winter will bring????? I also have iris seeds to plant but I am putting them in the greenhouse. I also have hardy hibiscus seeds to plant but I think I will take care of them from home because they are harder to germinate.

Well good friends, I am off to read my book. Have a great evening and be safe, healthy & happy.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Hi, everyone! I am getting close to the time for check from the Hermosa Beach Marriot, and then off to a "field trip" to Inglewood High School and a history tour of Inglewood. My sister will be joining us as she also went to the same school only a few years later. We had breakfast with her and her husband, son and DIL.

It has been raining but it didn't matter since we had our celebration indoors and had no need for travel, though we did walk around in the morning yesterday to some of the beach areas and have breakfast out there.

Gotta' go now.

~ Evelyn

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Evelyn, sounds like you are having a great time. So relaxing I'll bet. I love the CA beaches just to watch the water. Oregon and Washington too. Guess I love the ocean. LOL

Sharon, good news about Vern. Hope he watched the Seahawks win. LOL It's rare. I sure would like to see the Oleanders. If I had a place in the house I would love to have a house plant of one. Oh well. my mom used to have one, not a double, when I was a little kid. It was in our front entry way. I don't remember it's having a lot of direct light, but it wasn't dark either.

Did enjoy the pictures JB. And Merry, your house looks too neat. LOL, Bob and I are out cleaning off the decks. Everything froze. Whoops there he is again, gotta go.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

This has been a busy day. I just wanted to check in and say Hi. We had to mow some grass today because the weather has been hectic and what else is new? I am tired but I wanted to say hi. I have been working on getting Amforol cheaper than at the vets for Barney. The vet charges me $2.55 a pill and he takes three pills in a 24 hour time. I found the same d*** pill on the internet for $1.99. Now I have to get the horse vet to write me a script because the small animal vet is the one who charges the extra money. I can not afford to pay that kind of money for pills the dog needs at least once every two weeks. She charges me $31 for 12 pills.

I am about to go holistic with this dog. IS that the word? Everything they give him seems to make him worse. I found the Denosyl online and got her to let me get is, except she gets it and of course I pay extra for her to get it. They really have you by the short hair when they put the screws to your pocketbook.and it means the health and welfare of your animals. I hate all doctors, vets, etc. I just want to go back to the natural way of living.
Maybe more people died, but at least they died with dignity and they had money left for their families.

I am going to watch TV and watch those Pilllies get beaten again by the SF Giants.
Last night I stayed awake until; the last half of the 9th inning. The score was 4-3 I think favor Giants. I woke up when the dog got sick about 1:30 a.m. and never did know who won the game until this morning when I looked at the news. The TV was on and I missed the end of the game. I hate that. It happens so often to me I think I am going to quit watching TV at night. LOL. Hugs. JB Have a good evening.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Haven't watched the series in years. Should. I remember when I was young, before TV, yeah, and my mom making all of us girls be quiet so she could hear them. Imagine keeping 5 girls quiet and listen to a scratchy old radio to hear the ball game. LOL At least it was scratchy to me.

I did watch the football game before we went out to clean off the deck. Bob took 4 trailers of soil, root balls, pots, etc. just off the front deck and I have 2 that I am going to insulate and leave there. A JM and a 9 bark. Not too sure what to do with the 9 bark. It grew a lot in that pot just late. Also, my little maple really took off the last month. Guess they finally got their roots established.

Now Bob has to empty the ponds. He puts lids he made on those and leaves them on the deck also. He can clean the snow round those 4 things. Then next he will probably want to take the gutters off the eaves. He thinks the snow and ice will rip them off. Don't know about that. Wish they were built in. I have seen that. 'course then they would be hard to clean too.

JB, I know pills are expensive for the animals. I wish I could put them on my insurance. Yeah, I know there is an insurance for animals, but I am sure it would cost more than the vet bills and the pills.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Will try the picture thing. If it comes out can someone tell me what the large tree in the background is. The birds planted it about 8 years ago. Has seed pods on it this year.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good evening everyone:
Lee the tree is a mimosa they put on pink blooms in the spring. a very fast growing tree and very week .
wood. the sap will do a horrid job on a cars paint.
wait till you run into a dr. selling his pills instead of the pharmacy. I had a pain dr that did that. I did not care because My co pay was the same anywhere I went so I said stick it to em doc.
Jeanette: Is that the Jm I sent to you? If it is I must not be doing them right because they are just sitting there and not getting too big. hmmm maybe I will investigate transplanting them and hand water for controll. I do tend to be a bit heavy on the water with the sprinklers.
we went to see the movie red tonight. It was very funny. lots of bullits, bombs, car explosions and such but still funny. One I definately recomend.
Have a great evening
Dave

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Jeanette I have not received plants yet. They may be dead by the time I get them. Our mail sucks here.
I planted and transplanted all day. I am exhausted. Babysat my GD and she woke up crying at 5 am. UhG! tired.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well, it rained here all day. I did some laundry and did some cooking. I have a very busy day tomorrow if it does not rain. Temperature dropped to a high of 74. Had front and back door open all day and also all three master bedroom doors open to let the air flow through the house. I love cool fresh air.

Jnette, I have never seen an oleander as a house plant but I bet it could be. If I get any of the cutting to grow, I will send you one for Mother's day. Cleaning off your deck sounds like a lot of work.

Lee, your decorations are scary. Each pod on that mimosa tree will make another tree. The roots go everywhere. I have two but I try to control the roots. The one in the front area was planted to provide partial shade on the other side of the driveway.

Dave, how are you doing? How long before your weather gets cold? The weather we are having will blow by and then we will warm up again.

JB, our female Schnauzer gets two insulin shots a day and 1 1/2 thyroid pills. About 5 years ago she had cataract surgery on both eyes. I will not tell what that cost.

Evelyn, does everyone look older than you? It is great you get to see your sister.

If it does not rain tomorrow, I am going to have a full day.

Take care and love to you all.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Sharon we typically get a hard freeze by thanksgiving. we have had 3 feet of snow on halloween ... I am sure the kids loved that one...or not lol
we typically do the swing in weather until after new years then its a few warm days sometimes a week then cold. our weather is the most fluxuating weather I have seen. if it wasn't for family I would move out to another more steady weather area. and of course little rocks not much better as they are south of us by about 100 miles ... oh yea and east ... can't forget the easterly drive.
fortunately we have a turnpike that goes diagonal from tulsa to about 50 miles west of the arkansas boarder so it cuts drive time a lot.
well its bed time and I have busy day planned tomorrow. I got 4 bags of soil and am on a planting spree. of course I have to finish the mud hole. the shoping marathon blew out my ground cloth day saturday. but hey I got to spend the day running around with Kim and I won't complain about that. its always a blast.
Dave

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Y'all are making me tired with all that work you are doing....

It has been raining here, not exactly good weather for going to the beach, but we weren't expecting to go into the water anyway. I have been doing the "in town driving" so we walked to dinner, as we were tired from the days activities. I will have to report back later as to what we did, as we did a lot today.

Jeanette ~ When did you take a cutting of your 9 bark? I have 'Diablo', but not sure I want any more of that one. Which one do you have? (I could do without rain at the beach, but at least it is raining at our house.) A neighbor watered the whole property (that has planted areas) while we were gone, even though I just asked if she could do the veggie garden in the fenced area.

Sharon ~ I am happy to hear about Vern. I hope that he continues to behave.

Lee ~ Awesome Halloween Decor! We don't get "trick or treaters" in our neighborhood as the properties are too far apart. They all go to parties at the churches or schools and go to the Grizzly Park development for their tricking and treating. Yes, listen to Dave. Don't park your car under that tree. Also a lot of litter and pollen in the spring, but still it is quite pretty when in bloom. Those in our area that have that tree cut it down every year and call it a shrub. It can be enjoyed for its beauty but doesn't get its mess all over.

Dawn ~ Do you get mail at your house or go to the post office?

JB ~ I am sorry to hear of the recurring problems that your Barney is having. Quite an inconvenience to say the least. Are you still selling your plants now that you have pulled out of ebay? Are you selling on DG?

Well all you busy gardeners, enjoy yourselves, and maybe we will come home some day.

CHEERS!

~ Evelyn

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Home but the large packages go to the post office.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, are you sure that isn't a Catalpa tree Lee has? Or maybe an Elm?

Dawn, I haven't sent it yet. Remember I said I was chicken to try to scrunch the Ys into those triangle boxes? Will do that Tuesday. I have to go to Spokane tomorrow for a dr. appt.

I didn't see any pictures of Evelyn Sharon, where did you see them?

Evelyn, it is Center Glow I think. Very pretty when the sun is shining on it. I didn't take cuttings. Bought the plant.

Gotta get to bed, leaving early in the morning. Night.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

I haven't seen any blooms on that tree, ever. It only started having seed pods last year. They look like pea/bean pods, only lots bigger thinner, and longer, some are as long as 8+inches. As I said, the birds planted it. When I first saw it, it looked like a fern of some type, that is why I let it grow, then it turned into a tree after a couple of years. I do know it isn't an Elm, those are all over the place, and come up with the weeds. I have a second one, about 3 years old and probably 6 ft tall. This one is about 12 ft or so. Haven't noticed any sap or such on the stagecoach. Whatever it is, it has survived the horrid winters here, so that I guess is a plus.
The coach is a little different this year, but the breezway is really different. I will try another picture, but it is a little dark so might not come through. Lee

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

I tried to lighten it up, hope you can make it out. Well, it is out to dig this morning. Pulling the stupid garden to nowhere, and get rid of the dead plants. Lots of them, since it was down to 25 overnite. Ttyl, Lee

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Monday morning in this house is a down rignt zoo. Went out on the deck wondering why Barney and Big Cat were making so much noise and they had a rat.........second one in a week,......neighbors family will not clean up the field and the scrap and rats are moving in for some reason. Nothing to eat but my cat food outside for the cats ....no more feed in the barn...anyhow, it was dead and I had to recover that and remove it from their sight before I fed everyone.
Then, Barney and I went for a walk and my arthritis is hurting today so it was a struggle to walk and enjoy it.
Decided to have coffee and bagel before I go to the vets to pick up meds for Barney and the painter arrived to repaint the decks he did six months ago and they are a mess. The paint is coming off and he is doing this for nothing. He thinks we got a bad batch of paint.
But of course the paint company would not agree, so he is paying for the new paint and doing the job over. He has been with me for many years and he is that kind of person.
The weather is nice but rain is expected tonight and tomorrow.
You all sound so busy with your plants. I found mealy bug on my house gardenias this morning and only on old flower (can't think of what you call the little thing that holds the flower) anyhow, only on that. I usually cut them off but they bloomed so crazy this year because of the heat I must have missed some. These are the big Aimee Trees I had outside. So, I pulled them off and sprayed. It is always something.
Evelyn, I am selling on DG and my website. I have almost nothing to sell just now except Christmas Cactus and they are listed. I do have a few Aimee starters but they are young to ship.. When I get time I must check to see what I have listed other than that. I will be having some spider coming soon and I have alot of new jasmine cuttings. Other than that nothing exciting. Just waiting for the babies to grow. LOL
I do get business from eBay but I get so frustrated. I may just put some stuff back up on it again in a few weeks but I need to do something about the postage so I do not loose money when they automatically invoice combined orders.
Later guys, I need to go into town and get supplies before I get to work. JB

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

This may come through better. It's OK I used straw so that is a plant right, makes me legal on a garden level :) :) :)

Good morning:
nope not a catulpa catulpa has huge leaves and seed pods like a long green bean these are flat like a honey locust or mimosa. and the fact that the pods are not twisty rules out the honey locust. mimosa has compound leaves. gotta be mimosa. I am curious as to what an extension office person might say.

JB: When you list check out the shipping part they have a box to check if you are doing flat rate shipping. If I don't know or can't guestimate then I leave it as to be calculated. I have also canceled orders that are that wierd. It does cost to issue a refund but its worth itjust to have the controll.

well its time to go play
Dave

Oh yea I wanted to give you all a heads up. Natgeo chanel is doing a feture on the tornado of oklahoma city. More info to folow.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Well, the county extention office here knows less than I do about plants and trees. so no help there. Someone once told me it could be a black locust, but others have said it isn't. I haven't seen any others close by, but the seed must have come from somewhere. There are no root suckers, so I assume it starts from the seed, not traveling roots. leaves are tiny and almost remind me of that little bush that closes from touch, can't think of the name of it, grows wild in Mexico. Quite a sight in a field when the breeze is just right. You would think it is alive the way it opens and closes.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

The tiny plant you are talking about is called sensative plant

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1873/

and the tree is definately a mimosa

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/105867/

and they ar both in the Mimosaceae family. can you get a close up of the leaves? like I said earlier the honey locust has a pod that twists and the mimosa's pods are straight ish. kind of like a big sweet pea pod. the seeds are very prolific and its listed on some states noxious weeds list.

here is a pic of the decompressed granit leveled ...well um ...somewhat leveled. ok its the best I could do with my limited funds. more to follow

Evelyn-My second try went through OK. It is just a couple of posts down from the first Thanks for trying to help. Someday I will get the hang of this crazy computer.
I sent a pkg off to Sharon today and enclosed a small branch, and a couple of seed pods from the tree.. Maybe I could impose on her to post a picture of them.
Knowing you Dave, I would suppose you are right. The only thing different is that I have never seen blooms on the tree. The leaves look just like what is posted in plant ID, It doesn't have the spikes on the seed pods like the cats-claw, but does have similar pods. Mine are somewhat curved and slender. the actual seeds are flat and the size of a large pea. Lee

Lee, I have a Mimosa behind my KOI pond. I cut it short after the leaves fall and the next year it looks like a fern growing behind the pond. I have a multi-trunk in the front landscape near the driveway.
I will take a photo close up tomorrow of my multi trunk Mimosa so you can compare. The Mimosa behind our KOI pond was planted by a bird. The nearest one is 5 houses up and across the greenbelt.

Lee, again with those temperatures, you need a summer home in Arizona. Also, where in the world do you store all of that Halloween stuff?

Jnette, there is a photo this week of Evelyn on the California Forum in the Thought of the Day. I saw a photo of her and he handsome husband. I will have to think.

We got an inch of rain yesterday and through the night. Suppose to get more tomorrow. The trees are so pretty because all the dust has been washed away.

I still have to go gather Lantana seed, plant many plants, transplant many plants, thin many plants, OM. How did I ever work and do all this.

Dave, how in the world did you move that gigantic piece of material.

I hope we all get everything done and have a very restful November. Of course, here in November we are still in the 80s.

Later. Jnette, how was your trip to Spokane today?

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

LOL My DH asks the same thing year after year. He has a huge garage, and the rafters are full. I have given away some things that no longer work, small in-house things. I wouldn't do this, except the kids love it. Each year throughout the month of October, they come buy each day just to see what we have done. Sometimes, I let them in past the gate before THE day, especially if they are younger, just so they know none of it is real, the older ones have to wait. They can deal with being spooked better than the little ones. Our town is so small, there isn't a haunted house available, so my breezway is perfect. As you can see, the canopy covers 1/2 of the area, and somewhat protects the electronic figures. Wish the pictures of nighttime would come out, the undercover area is lite up with little lamps that appear to be fire. So realistic. The rest is out in the weather, sometimes gets snow or rained on, but they are latex so doesn't hurt them, just have to dry them off. Oh My, I haven't discussed any plant issues, the powers that be will be upset :)

Lets see........ hmmmm...... nope can't think of a thing...... OH well ttyal Lee

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Just love all of your pictures Lee and Dave. Lee, we used to do that in Seattle and Bob had so much fun with the kids. When we moved over here we are so far out in the country that we don't have any kids for Halloween. Too bad.

Dave, I am fascinated by what you are doing. Does that stuff turn to cement?? It looks like it. What is it? Give me the right spelling so I can google it. I have never heard of it. But, that's nothing new. I don't get down to all the stores to see what the new products are out there. Is it costing you a lot? I'll bet it is.

OK Dawn and Dave. This is the honest truth. I was rushing around here trying to get your plants in the mail, and ran into a REAL problem. Spider mites. I cannot believe it. These DA_ _ED plants!! I even had a whole quart of polymers hydrated. Don't know how I got as much as I did out of 3 tsps of those darned things, but right now they have swollen to almost 2 quarts. They are filling up the house.

I am so sorry, but there is no way I will send you plants with spider mites. You would never speak to me again. I mixed up some tonic and sprayed them down good and will keep at it, and as soon as they are clean I will get them in the mail. I promise.

We went down yesterday to Spokane since I had a drs. appt., got that over fast, got the new router for the computer, and all the other things like a new hand held shower, just the little things that we can't get up here.

Now I have to install the router. Sure hope I can. ttyl

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Had a flu shot and an EKG today. Must go for a stress test. UGH My cholesterol is down to 190 and my bloodwork was all perfect, but the darn EKG was not normal so off to the heart hospital and doctor for this old broad. I need more exercise and more gin. See you later. JB Oh yes, I feel like (**(&^( because the stupid flu shot made me really tired and feeling crappy. Nothing to worry about.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Well, I see that you all are having so much fun that I have little to offer in the way of propagating questions or answers today. Oh, I do have a question. what kind of nice gift can I get a neighbor for watering above and beyond her "call of duty"....that is she watered everywhere I had plants before the rain. I do not know her tastes. Some people are allergic to fragrances, so I thought a big bag of daffodils as nothing will eat them up.

We had a light snack for lunch in Topanga before we got on the freeway out of L.A, and after we briefly visited the Santa Monica Pier. Now we have arrived in Solvang, on our way back from Redondo Beach, as we stayed there for 2 nights. (I used to live in Topanga Canyon and he used to live in Redondo Beach.)

I will have to send pictures later.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

good evening. its been one of those days so this is going to be short. we got some much needed rain all last night and into the late am. nice soaking rain. believe it or not i actually got up and did some stuff today. getting all my seeds ready to know what I need in the spring. also harvested all the seed pods of my hostas out front and cut down the spikes it looks a lot better.
I will cover the material in the am.
Have a good evening
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, so, what do you have to do??? Hospital? To do what? I'm telling you, these hospitals today are a joke. Do you guys have to use hospitalists when you go to the hospitals or do your drs come see you? We are on the first one. I cannot think of having a dr. I don't even know. They just started this a year or so ago.

Bob's mom went to the hospital Friday and never saw or talked to her own dr. Had a hospitalist. A dr. employed by the hospital.

I know Sharon, we went over this before and I still say I want to see my own dr. when I am not feeling good or have an emergency. Did Vern see his own dr. or, no, he had a specialist. Yes, in his situation he would. Did he see anyone he knew after the surgery?

Evelyn, your idea sounds very nice. Everyone loves daffs. I have never been to Topanga Canyon, but have heard of it.

Gotta go, been fighting with this router all afternoon, but I think I just finally got it up and working!!!

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi peeps!

I have been extremely busy. I do not know how Sharon does so much.

JB .... I sure hope you are back to feeling fine and dandy pronto.

Lee ..... I know you are looking forward to Halloween. At first, I thought you were celebrating it early ...LOL

Dave ..... looks like you been a very busy beaver .... just don't overdo it!

I want some of each variety of the creeping phlox ..... and a forever summer hydrangea.

Dawn .... your new baby is so cute.

Jeanette, I hope you have resolved all the router issues.

Evelyn ... the details of your trip .... plus beautiful pictures were terrific.

We had rain last night and early this morning.

Oh dear, I just remembered .... Christmas cactus needs to go back into hiding closet).

LOVE YA ALL

MARY
