Morning Glories 2010 #20

Antoinette - You can get them all over the internet! But I got mine at Oriental Trading Post: http://www.orientaltrading.com/ui/browse/processRequest.do?demandPrefix=12&sku=OTCG1119&prodCatId=388692&mode=Browsing&erec=13&Ntx=mode%2bmatchallpartial&sp=true&Ntk=all&ms=search&requestURI=processProductsCatalog&BP=10678&N=388692+98&cm_mmc=google-_-Wedding+-+Adlucent-_-Wedding+Favor+-+Bags+-+%28Search+0-18%29-_-d54b99188ae64017b75a7634c3af601a&sd=Sheer+Organza+Wedding+Gift+Bags I sent everyone a couple of bags along with their paint brushes last year in the seed swap.

Jackie - It will definitely be a surprise as to what seeds/vines are grown from any of the hige seeds.

Helena - LOVE that light purple Fuji Shibori bloom! ♥♥♥

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I get mine at walmart in the wedding department, and also dollar tree ...
tonite I cut up the white netting roll into squares, to store seeds in, and I just tied them up with rubberbands.

Thanks Jackie and Becky. Got a neat bloom from my Baby blue into a reverse tube, this also has curled leaves. Sorry the bloom is a bit damaged.

Lots of Kai no Kasumi blooms.

Helena, you have a huge variety growing, this is a good time to try hand pollination and crossing, now that there are different ones open at the same time.. Kai no Kasumi would make a good momma or daddy..lol depending on which you decided to use where.. Put some pollen on that light Fuji Shibori you never know what will happen.

Very nice selection you have there.

Becky, Jackie and Joe'swife, Thanks for the information on the bags guys.. I still have hundreds of the mesh bags I made with my serger a couple of years ago, but they only fit one mg pod, no other types of long bean type pods... I may order some of those from that company, it seems like they send their catalog twice a month lately.

Mesilla Park, NM

Hopefully these will start blooming in the next couple of weeks... only a couple are my crosses, most of the 100 + plants are grown to make addtional crosses for this coming spring. I'm not going for seed production this time, only for a couple of good crosses, nothing else.. so, come next summer hopefully there is something that is worth it and it was not all in vain. It felt great to take the time off this past year though.

Helena - That Baby Blue reverse tube bloom is really nice, even with minor damage. I have one growing under lights that has crinkled leaves, so I am expecting something interesting from it as well.

Antoinette - I am doing the same thing ... growing my indoor vines under lights to try hand-crossing my current grow vines to see what I can create for Spring. I remember seeing Beth's grow room and I can't stop thinking how could I make my spare room like that! LOL! She had some huge vines growing indoors! :-) Sure is nice to see those blooms in the drab and cold days of Winter! Your vines look great! Any buds yet? I have been hitting mine hard with Bloom Booster now. I hope to see buds forming late next week. :-) I usually get blooms within 30-40 days. Usually a nice bloom flush and then we'll see what happens as far as seed production goes...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - I forgot to add that I think A has a great idea about using Kai no Kasumi as a cross. I know it doesn't produce much pollen, so use it as the mother and find a neat color to cross some of the blooms with.

Did your lunatic produce blocked color leaves? My bloom on mine looked similar to yours. I didn't have any blocked colors on my vine at all and it just produced solid blue-purple blooms. But ... one of seed fell into another bucket and it IS producing the blocked color leaves ... so maybe it skips a generation! :-)

Mesilla Park, NM

Acutally, these will be 6 weeks old come Sept 27 and I don't think I see any buds at all, unless they are tiny. I have not used bloom booster to water with yet, I wait till the roots are really established and strong.. I'm afraid that it will either kill the plant or dry the pollen, or weaken it. I was going to start that next week.

I've never gotten blooms under 60 days, maybe one time at 57 days..lol, but, other than that, you guys that get the early blooms are sooooooo lucky. I envy you. I'v got 1/2 of the seedlings under lights 24/7 and 1/2 the seedlings with window light only and dark nights. So, it will be interesting to see if the short day does anything to them. Don't I wish I got blooms within 30-40 days.

Which week do you start full bloom boost ferilizing? I've been giving them fish emulsion, diluted organic fertilizers almost every watering, and mist daily with some MG on the leaves only. I'm hoping for some very long lasting and durable plants here, but, this is the first time I grow during the winter and keep them indoors, usually I start them indoors and by Spring they are ready for outdoors and stay there all summer/fall.

Hopefully I don't kill them all.

Here is Shikanako which I'm growing for seeds only, to replace seed stock, fingers crossed here.

The seed for Shikanako germinated in a couple of hours in the water, burst and the cotyledons were just floating out of the seedcoat.. it survived and is looking good, it took awhile for it to get growing too. It is a lot smaller than all the rest. But healthy.

Here is one wrapped around, and around, to keep them compact, again, this is a first for me, so hopefully they bloom nicely with the flowers pointing outward with the pollen showing..lol, (if you are going to wish, wish big) lol.. 1/2 of the seedlings are wrapped in this fashion.

This one in particular I started just because I liked the foliage the first time I grew it about 5 years ago, it is Fuji no Momo LIGHT Pink, I love the variegation.. I sent some of these seeds to a couple of you last week .. this is what the plant will look like, if you wrap it around itself several times as it grows..

I have four of these seedlings, maybe the genes/virus will get passed on to a cross. So far out of the 40 Mt. Fuji seedlings I've got growing, none show this amount of variegation on the leaves. Pretty cool.

Shikanako without the reflection, I need a to use a different camera, it has been giving me problemas..

Becky, How old are your seedlings now, I don't remember if you said in another post when you started them. If I had not just used fish emulsion yesterday, I'd try the bloom booster. Are you using MG or Green Light? I've got both, but don't trust MG, don't remember why though. CRS Can't Remember Stuff..lol

Mesilla Park, NM

Becky,
MG Bloom Booster 15-30-15 is what I'm using to mist the leaves with in very minute amounts/diluted to the fullest.

Green Light Super Bloom 12-55-6 .10% chelated Iron is what I use to water with. Maybe the reason that I don't get blooms early is that I don't fertilize soon enough.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Antoinette - Your vines look terrific! I can't wait until mine have that much growth on them. I have no sunny place near a window in my house except the window shelf in the one room. But I think the sunlight from that would be too intense and would probably fry the leaves like it did in past years. But I may try using some sheer cloth in the window to filter the harsh sun to prevent that. Either way, I can only get so many plants in that window anyway. Not sure how I am going to do this yet. I have some grow light bulbs in my spotlight fixtures that I could also add to the room. I could clip them right on to the shelving unit and grow larger plants from the floor and they are twining up the teepee poles. I think I have 3 of those lights. And I can lower my shelves to 18" and 22" respectively to allow some upward growth. But I want to wrap them around and around themselves as well, like you are doing.

My plants germinated on Sept. 6th. So they are 19 days old. I started the weak Bloom Booster fertilizing after the first set of true leaves appeared. And I do spray them with weak BB mixed in rain water on the leaves several times a day. So ...

I really do expect to see buds in another week or so. Even when I grew mine indoors the past 2 years, I have gotten blooms right around 30-40 days. So I expect that to remain the same ...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

They are so very beautiful, A, I really am looking forward to seeing some winter blooms from you. It will brighten my day to see a morning glory here, while it is white and windy outside.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Beautiful lvs on that no Momo A, I love it.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I agree with Debra and Jackie! Lovely leaves on Momo. Would make a nice cross, don't ya think?

I think I am going to start 2 seeds for Cameo Elegance to use as a cross. And also start some more of the Blue speckles. When I can get the seeds to germinate, they produce some really unexpected blooms. Here is the 3rd vine, which produced an off-white bloom. Almost looked like a pale yellow. I wasn't expecting a light color solid bloom. I was expecting a solid blue bloom. The leaves on either side of the bloom in this photo belong to other vines. Interesting, huh?

It rained last night, so this bloom got wet around the edges before it opened this morning. Made a pretty cool color on this tricolor Flying Saucer bloom.

It looks like I have a first flower bud on one of my indoor I. nil vines. This is Antoinette's cross of Chocolate Picotee x Ten Ten. As you can also see in the photo, it has lots of specks and streaks on the hypocotyl.

Thumbnail by beckygardener
Mesilla Park, NM

Becky, that is what the vine was producing, light blue or light cream colored, then It started getting blue specks, then all the flowers had specks.. so, it has some history, the first year the seeds were black, next year tan, this year black again, then the seeds stayed black. It will be a long time before it is stable. When you start your seeds, do you nick them, soak them too, or just soak and plant? I think that maybe they may do well with the baggie method if you have the time. There are some really nice small very pale blue, almost a grayish tint on some. I tried to separate and tag all of them, but those genes will come out one way or another. I might have some photos on my flicker but don't know if I named them or just used a number, when there are so many photos, eventually you get tired of writing the names. My mission was just to get the photos saved at the time.

It will be a nice ride with these seeds.

A.

Becky, I forgot, but, I may have sent you some of the No Momo's in the last batch, if not, let me know and I'll send some off to you.. I think I lost 7 seedlings this afternoon, I took all the cups out for some air and it rained, some fell, and they wilted so bad, I couldn't revive them... on the other hand a little good news, I did get a cutting of a White Dinner Plate Hibiscus... I hope it roots.

Did you say you have BUDS? I'm so jealous.. send me some of that luck will you!

Joeswife and Jackie, thanks for the input, I may have a couple of tiny buds on one of the kikyo's... they are so tiny, that I can't tell right now.

A.

Cool looking pictures I think..
Today, I had some nice flying saucer photos.. I can't believe I am getting them. I really like them.. I guess I will have to find something else to want.. it is always more exciting to want than to have..

A - Thanks for all the information about Blue Speckles! It is one of the most interesting vines I've ever grown from parent to F1 seeds! It's like opening one Christmas present after another and every gift is an unexpected delight. I definitely want to grow that one indoors, close-up, and personal. I want to study it and grow out some F2 vines eventually. It's got some very interesting genes in it!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Always fun to see the different patterns on these I think..

Those yellow centers on the Tri-colors always get me, they are gorgeous and make the rest of the flower stand out.

It will be fun to watch your grow outs and experiments.. I am glad I re-signed up here..

I found poor blue yojiro out behind the pear tree, the birds had torn it up to pieces.. poor thing..
I am waiting for them to get on these lobatas..

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I hacked down the monster vine ( yellow lutea) on the patio and so now it is trimmed, I am ready for it to do something before it freezes here.. It had roots off it's leaf joints, considered making a ton of cuttings to send to people, then reminded myself why I had cut it back and decided against it..

A - I will try the baggie method with the Blue Speckle seeds. It's been one of the hardest vines to germinate for some reason. Really difficult. Out of the 15 seeds I planted outside in cups, only 4 germinated. And both of the indoor seeds did NOT germinate for me, so I will try the baggie method for them. I really want to grow some under lights. They definitely stay dwarf in smaller containers! Would make a perfect MG Bonsai! :-)

Debra - Glad to see you growing FS this year, too! It is a really nice cultivar of tricolor. Perhaps my favorite tricolor. I've grown them all except Wedding Bells which I will grow out next year. Or ... maybe this winter on my grow station! Hmmm ... maybe along with Flying Saucers! I want to cross those two! :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

My wedding bells last year were awsome. I went over to Charlie's(my son) today to meet with the insurance and roofers
(his place was hit by the baseball sized hail) and saw his wedding bells, akatsus, joyce cobbs, jamie lynn, and shibouris were all a bloom. I counted about 11 plants other than his regular purple I purpureas, including a crimson rambler, messina creeper, beach morning glory, two caudex plants, and a roman candy. He also has some Liz lav beautys and SOHs there. He was all excited since he has only grown the purple morning glorys. I told him which seeds to collect and which to let drop. Took two of us to fix his decking today..

This was a stray vine over there last week, I transplanted it and now it is acting all happy and ready to come inside.. it is a white Moon Vine.

I had mentioned the moon vine in the sunflower at the end of the house.. here is one blooming last night.

Debra how are you doing to overwinter your caladium?
Becky I saw that you had also caladium the garden, they spend the winter outside?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

My Caladiums will all stay in their pots until they die down inside. The ones that are in the ground will be potted in tiny pots and stored inside the Basement Garden. I have been setting it up for three weeks. I need 5 more clamp lights. We are moving in things starting tomorrow as the lows are in the 50's now. I started three seeds of your I. nil mix, Dany, and 2 seeds of Helena's Plum surprise. I am growing at least 2 seeds of every NOID bag I have to see what they are. I have numbered the bags and the tags so I can keep track and once they bloom I can tag the bags. I am bringing in everything except the perennials here. I just can't bear to let my Pentas, Impatiens, Coleus, and Lantanas freeze. I keep my salvias in too. ( the ones that are said to be Zone 7 and higher)

Dany - Yes! My caladium's stay outside in the ground and come up every year for me. Ironically, I brought a hanging basket of Florida Sweetheart into my garage last winter and they didn't come back this year. So I won't do that again. All the ones left outside came back! Go figure, huh?

Debra - Are you wrapping seed pods in the netting?

Wow! Already time to bring all your plants indoors. Beginning of October it gets that cold? Geez. I can only dream of cooler weather like that right now. We usually don't get that until January except for the ocassional cold front that maybe last 2 days, at this time of year. By Halloween, my weather will have cooled by 10 degrees (I hope)! I'm ready!!!

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

Debra, what vine is that with your Yojiro?
