Tropical Garden # 81

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

James, that one is beautiful.. mine is still growing..

You can see the plumeria I tried to grow, here at my Sis In Laws last night .. we went over for a swim party and I took alot of pics.. everything I gave her is huge and lush. She loves it all.. so does her DH. He asked me if the coleus ever bloomed, I told him yes, she chimed in a quiet little voice, " I pinch them alot" Her coleus cuttings I gave her from Gebhardts look twice the size of mine, I don't pinch.. maybe I should.

Gordon, my passies out front are over the roof, if they are blooming, I will never know. The Chaice vine is also over the roof out front. both of those plants ( three Passion Vine crosses and one chalice vine gone wild) are from dgr's. I sure do . love seeing them climb. I also use the plastic slinkys to twine my vines on. I discovered them as a good tool last year when I had a brain storm.

I grew this Balsam from a seed in the bedroom window, it was a seed from Emma.. it is huge now and about to burst with colour again..

I worked at my sons place today. I planted the cup of tree seeds that were now seedlings old enough to plant. I planted him a Pecan tree, a Magnolia tree ( old fashioned southern) two maples, an elm, and a fuschia coloured crape myrtle.
I also planted the fuschia, white, yellow and Pink 4 o clocks that I had grown in pots for him. He told me he pulled out all the "dyed up dead stuff" so i went over to check it out. I think he pulled up some annuals I had planted.

He is really into his morning glorys..

I was excited to see the caudex morning glorys up and going I started from seed over there, and that the obedient plant I planted was blooming for him. I hope the trees hurry up and grow, cuz there aren't any.

Prita... well the iochroma really likes the water ... it's in a 2' tall pot... with a saucer ...and I can water it and it never looks wet at all..I had a few blooms on it... and saw someone asking if picking the seeds was a good thing.. so I started removing the seeds.. and it's now got plenty of flowers..
MMMM a CANNA.. gee I never thought of it that way.. but the leaves do look like one.. only a real small plant... and the flowers kind of look like one.. it's just so small.. at about 2' tall...and blooming..all my others are growing up at 10' - 12 '.. so it never ocoured to me ... I'll call it my dwarf canna... ..
thanks for the help
debra.. I can't believe you are useing the plastic slinkies.. for the same thing... they come to me from trade shows and the like.. after years I finally found a use for them.. I should have asked here.. right... they are a part of this large round aluminum circle I'm decorating to be my American Dream Catcher... we'll post it again when it's filled in

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Prita - GordonHawk....so you've got me wondering if I'm not watering my Iochroma enough, they haven't bloomed yet, one's in the ground and one's in a pot.
ummmm

Red Oak, TX

pensacolagarden, that is sweet! It's a very good photo as well. Thanks!

Joeswife, your son's place is very nice. I will start pinching my coleus from now on, they are sprawling all over the place.
This is a new miniature plumeria 'Divine' I bought last winter. It is not supposed to get over 3' tall. It will be perfect for those of us that have to take plumerias in, every fall.

Gordonhawk, thanks for the tip on the lochroma! But the spidermites are doing a # on mine. I will be happy just to have them survive this summer. The blue lochroma is about 7' tall, I would cry if it should die. The red is only 3' but it was a 4" from logee's.
I do have a couple of Cannas that are dwarfs, they are very nice and have been blooming for most of the summer.

RachelLF, thanks for showing me your Anthurium Dark Moma, I guess she will darken with age. I will have to do a little research on it. Now that I know what she looks like, I will not pass it up if the opportunity arises. just saying.

This little Anthurium Crystal Hope is 4yrs. old, a very slow grower or a very bad gardener. lol

candela, as always, it is very nice to see what's blooming in your yard. Your Cashew tree would go nicely in that new spot.

mjsponies, I usually water my lochroma once in the morning but I have to water again in the evening if I want to see blooms this year!

GAgirl1066, a yellow crinum bloom for you.

Thank you prita, that is gorgeous!! My Queen Emma (or whatever they are) have not bloomed this year. They had 3 or 4 blooms last year.

prita, you label of the Dwarf Canna looks exactly like mine!!! I've had them a bit over a year now, they are still around 18 inches tall and have bloomed very well alll summer long!!!

Planted across the street at mi madres house. Put in a fenceline of shell ginger (to block the neighbors) and coleus, ti , pink vinca, canna, and crinum. Other side of the sidewalk will take place this week. Back to my yard on my side of the street (which is going slowly....ever so slowly....) and then back to her fenceline ...on down to the lake. I think canna will do well by the water's edge, we never really know what level the lake will be from year to year.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

That canna looks like one I have too, I grew it from seed from phicks, it is good in water too..
Gordon your dreamweaver is a great idea, but you always have great ideas. My Iochromas are always n a pot since the first time I grew one in the ground it was the size of a small tree out on the north fence, and not one bloom. Mine get water and also sit in a saucer outside. they bloom constantly. I am after a red one and a blue one, all I have is a purple one.
I have an arm rooting for you, Gordon.. It is in the bubbler tub and looking ooh so good so far... keep yer fingers crossed..

My criniums are not blooming either, but I sure like their droopy leaves, they remind me of how I feel at the end of a work day..floppy.

Rachel, I love that first anthurium you posted today..
Candella, could you use a grounds keeper?( I am waving my hand here) your place looks divine! I like it a lot and that oncidium is awesome! Oh, and could your hubby show my hubby how to buy an orchid? Or .. better yet, even want to buy one? LOL Lucky you!
Rita, try using kens mix on the iochromas, I do on mine.. I love that dwarf Plumeria.. How I can feel an urge to go buy a new plant when I already have all these here at home is beyond me.. so I went and found some native glorys and dug them up and now they are in an outside tub..

Meanwhile..Joe does like to take cool pictures, and here is one of a large EE leaf

woooo hooo.....been sitting on the porch having coffee and it's a wonderful 65º !! course it will be up to 91 again today. Might have frisky horses this morning, and I hope the some of my reluctant plants get frisky and start blooming !
noid pink canna doesn't get more than 18 in. tall ( or hasn't yet and it started it from seed last year, overwintered in the ground and came back just fine)

another one maybe a little bigger, started from seed at the same as other

Love the polka dotted one! How long does it take from seed for them to bloom?

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Gagirl....sowed the seeds both the above in I think March last year in small pots as I only had two seeds of each. They both bloomed in the summer. They are not huge seed producers either. I think I have some of the pink from last year, none of the Speckled one tho. I am moving some of these to put them where the hummer's will find them easier to pollinate.

Blackshear, GA

Thanks, thats good to know, I've never tried seed before.

Red Oak, TX

GAgirl1066, the Queen Emmas in my garden did not bloom last year for me either, but this year they are realy showing off. I guess they need a resting season. They are one of my favorite plants, and the backbone of my garden. They are very regal with the 8" wide burgundy leaves standing straight and elegant.

MerryMerry, that will be a very pretty sight when blooming!
I do agree that the cannas will do well at the waters edge. Hopefully you will get some rain as well, to get them established before winter.

Dirtygirl71, I bought a Dwarf pink and a red. The tall cannas tend to blow over or lean in strong wind. I give them the thumbs up for abundant blooms and size. I hope that they multiply quickly. That is a very pretty yellow.

Joeswife, I would get fired the first day as a grounds keeper for candelia, I would be pinching and taking cuttings all day long. I love her bromeliad collection.
Can you explain "kens mix"? I am desperate and need to get rid of these bugs before winter. I did go postal on them today and used a product called "All seasons spray oil". I've got my fingers crossed that I did not kill my plants in the process.
Tell Joe that I liked his picture and he should take a few more.

mjsponies, that sounds like you are having a wonderful morning in paradise. I usually sit by my pond in the mornings, drinking coffee, and work myself back into the house around lunchtime.
I have also tried my hand at starting plants from seeds (thanks to joeswife) and am currently growing out a few alocasias that my friend Truetropical crossed.
That second canna takes the prize for beauty!!

Alocasia Borneo Giant

Rita, that is a tremendously grown Philodendron Superbum and I have to say your Anthurium Hope is as slow at growing as my Mehani. I think they are well worth the wait though;-)

Thumbnail by

Debra, super pic from Joe on your Colocasia. I took one like that from this Alocasia last Winter. I think it's neat to view some of the detail's that appear in leaves.

This is probably the rarest plant I will ever own!

Rita, put a little soap and a little mollasses and some tea tree oil in your sprayer next time you power wash for mites.. Kens mix has those items plus beer, epsom salts, and ammonia in it. I add some milk for mildew and some superthrive and a mosquitoe dunk into my sprayer with the "MiX" There is a thread here on DG in the Brug forum for it.. I do however , strip all leaves that I can SEE them on, and then spray the soil as well as the stem.. new leaves grow back. If it is really nasty, use a safer product and spray.. but you can see on the label it is mostly soap. I just use some mild ivory in my stuff.
I sure do like you philos and Anthuriums you and Rachel are growing. so cute and strange! DH really likes them too.

This is a balsum jewel weed plant I started from seed on the windowsill last winter.. look at this thing it is huge! it is called plum delite from EMMA
