Tropical Garden # 81

Blackshear, GA

Good Morning,
It seems to be cooler here also, finally maybe a break. Debra, If you need someone to babysit your tapioca, I have a GH. Love all the flowers. Isn't it sad when you look at all these pictures and think 'I don't have that one, I need it". LOL
Prita, love the laven/purple hib above. What is the name? I had Tylene, but lost it this past year. It was beautiful! I am trying to stay away from Hibs. I love them, but they take up too much room and just don't bloom for me, the way I want them too. I still have about 1-12, but not getting anymore.

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

I am lovingthose 4 O'clocks, joeswife...those are soooooooooooo pretty!!! did you cross them? or just open air pollinate? I have TONS of fushia seedlings ((that I need to find homes for fast!!)) ~hint hint~ :-) I'm hoping to get some open air crosses when I can get other colors started...right now I just have to get rid of off the baby fushias

Red Oak, TX

Metrosideros, thanks! I wish I could get my peacock ginger plant to look like yours.

mjsponies, cool picture, 5 blooms at one time. Do you have any of the double yellow Datura? I will have seeds later this fall. I have sent my GS off to college, the last of my responsibilities (happy days are here again). A vacation is on the horizon. I do have a good friend to take care of my plants and dog. I think New Guinea is first on my list.

RachelLF, great find at the clearance rack. The name that came with that Anthurium is "Big Splash". I was reluctant to post it because I could not find anything with that name.
I keep buying any anthurium that I find, only to come home and find that I have it in my collection already. crs is a bad thing!!

Joeswife, your morning glory blooms always put a smile on my face, it is so much fun to walk around in the morning checking to see what MG's are blooming. I thank you for sharing your seeds.
I promise to take good care of my turbina!!

GAgirl1066, the Hibiscus is 'Lavender Blush' I find that they will bloom in the spring and even better in the fall.

Dirtygirl71, I wish that I could take those fushias off your hands, but I have absolutely no luck growing them.

This is a Jasmine Lakeview, The fragrance will knock your socks off.

prita, lol, I'm thinking of the "knock your socks off", I quite wearing socks, as I'd go thru 3-4 pr's in a day. UnLESS, I have my riding boots on, then Yes, socks or "de"regur" ....I KNOW , I spelled it wrong.....on well, you know what I mean............
my 30 year old Stag Horn Fern............I guess I need to post this in my "prized plant forum"...I got in as a baby in a 2 in. Pot.

mj...you holding that bugger up with a rope????? WOW!!! I know a few people around here that got tired of replacing the ropes and have resorted to CHAINS! *LOL* one even has it on a pully so she can lower it to 'feed' it a daily banana

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Dirtygirl,
Well, we know we are on borrowed time with this. I used to lower it into the back of my pickup truck and back it into the barn if we had a freeze. Now, I cover it with several layer's of horse blanket's. I worry all the time during the winter, and several time's we've had bad freeze's here, I've been scared to death we would lose it. But so far the worst has been some pretty fired outside layer's. I literally went down and started fire 7 feet away from it at one point cause I wasn't and will not lose it but it's too big to move ! The rope has cut into the tree, and we're thinking we're gonna have to got to chain....I really don't care what I have to do, but I'm NOT losing the fern.

Rita, I have done the exact same thing with a couple of Philodendron plants;o) Anthurium 'Big Splash' was hybridized by John Banta. It is a cross from A. watermaliense and A.spectabile. I also have his 'Dark Moma' which is a cross from A. warocqueanum and A. papillaminum. Both are gorgeous plants and I will enjoy watching them both grow up.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

OH MY GOSH! That is a nice Staghorn. I had to call my Joe in to see it. I would build a glass house around it if I had to..
LOL

Is it your Birthday Yet, Rita?

Rachel, I am getting ready to bring the Anthuriums in .. it has been getting chilly in the ams.. I will have them cleaned and fresh and brought in by the 10th of September.

prita....which begonia is that ? Is it Special Angel? It's beautiful!

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

mj....have you taken a small piece of the staghorn for *just in case*?

Red Oak, TX

mjsponies, wow!! That is amazing, and quite the treasure. I only wear socks when I power walk, then it is de rigueur.
I have a little Stag horn fern, I had better start feeding it bananas. I usually just give it a spray of miricle grow once in a while.

DirtyGirl, I have two small ( 2 feet across) Stag's "just in case", but we really do cover it with lots of warm blanket's and even underneath if we get that cold !
prita that's a lovely Episcia ! I haven't grown them in years since I was in my African Violet phase.

Is your bauhinia in the ground or planted in a pot? I have one that is still in a pot because we are in a rental but we should be moving hopefully before next summer and I want to plant it.
Before you light the match to burn down the garden, PLEASE let me get in there with my shovel and get some of your beautiful plants. lol Have fun on vacation, please take lots of pictures and post them so we can all enjoy them.

Joeswife
If you find any seeds for your mg could I please have some? I love the colors.

Mjsponies
Does your daturas come back or are they annuals and reseed?

Dirtygirl
I would love some of your fushia seedlings. Just Dmail me and let me know.

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

prita...that is soooooo pretty!!!

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Tina,
It depends on how cold it gets. If we have freezes than I have to either grow new from seed. I don't usually bother with cuttings as they are so easy to grow from seed.

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

Mjsponies,
i have one that is in a pot and I was thinking of planting in the ground, I'm zone 8A so I will mulch it really well when I do plant it. Thanks Tina

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Rita, seed pods usually show up after about a week or two from a blooom. To track a seed pod, put a piece of coloured ribbon, or a twistie tie, or a piece of coloured tape under the bloom on a stem part, and then go back in about a week, if it is swollen, you are getting a pod, if it is yellow, it aborted. Much like hibiscus buds do.. The pods are usually by the oldest part of the plant, and if you don't get them, the will drop out when ripe.
Tina, Sure I will send you some seeds.!

Love those begonias.
Do you really feed that staghorn a banana? How do you do that?

Have a great day tomorrow!

Thumbnail by joeswife
DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Debra,
I save the skin's from banana's and just throw it on the fern, or if it get's over ripe the whole banana. I put watermelon rinds, apples other fruits out also as hummingbirds feed on fruit flies. Butterflies will nectar from sliced watermelon. So if you have some that get's a little too ripe, set out where the Butterflies will find it and they will nectar on it.

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

I did that once, mj..yes, the butterflies like watermelon...but so do ants .. ~~shivers~~ YUCK

Lovely pictures of paradise a la Hawaii... I've never been... you'd have to be in an awfully advanced section of CRAZY to get back on the plane to leave....after getting there.. I'm just crazy enough not to leave..
so...I have an IDd request... I've these... saved from bulbs last year in a paper bag.. which I missed altogether in spring planting.. and planted late... they came up nicely... so I divided them into about 8 clumps.. and now there are flowers... and I can't remember who they are ..

Thumbnail by GordonHawk
Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

It's a bit crazy here.. but ... there's a few things we've kept together enough for some flowers....

Thumbnail by GordonHawk
Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

oh.. duranta and iochroma are in it too...

Thumbnail by GordonHawk
Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

we're about to reach a critical mass of these blooms... there's a thousand +... buds lounging in the sun today..... these next few weeks will be the time of supreme bloom.. if the passis would only start, there's many 100's of buds on one.. one should be budding out .. but isn't.. the other two that were planted later will perhpas get the idea early.. as they see the others... and it starts getting cooler...

mjsponies, I did notice in a greenhouse picture, a DG had the Episcia growing as groundcover. It was very pretty, I can't make myself plant them in the ground though.

Dirtygirl71, thanks, the Queen Emma Crinums has been blooming very well this year. They are my favorites.

Tina_A, It is nice to see you! The bauhinia is in a pot that goes in the GH every winter. Please d-mail after you get settled in your new home. I can share quite a few plants to get you started.

Joeswife, thanks for the tips, I will keep watch for seed pods. I am enjoying the new big blooms and wanted to send my mom a few.
My GS saw me put a banana peel on the staghorn fern this morning and asked if I were tripping again. btw, that bark blue mg is awesome!
