Tropical Garden # 81

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Debra, is that called cat's whiskers too ? I've tried to grow balsum jewel weed from seed, it hate's me ! Not one seed germinated. I might just take the few seeds I have left out and dump them in the "cottage weed, errr flower" garden.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

joeswife and prita your hired when can you start! as long as i can pay you in plants.
actually i have the neighbor hood guy that comes once a week just to blow of the gravel and pick up palm fronds. i had a guy come that would start cleaning up by picking up what he thinks are dead branches but they were actually cuttings in the ground. he also did me a "favor" by cutting up some dead branches after a hurricane only to pile them on top of my gingers/hedychiums. he didn't last long. i am sure everyone has had some lawn guy experiences like that.

shooting star hoya

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Cande...they didn't do as well this year as last...but I don't think it had anything to do with the winter. Even tho I have them planted in a spot which is generally "wet", we were so dry and hot, and it's not an easy spot to get to to water. I've got Bog Sage down there and native Lizzard's tails also, and while they bloomed they just weren't as lush...now that we've had more regular rain, they seem to be doing better. The Yellow w/ the apricot spots is VERY stingy with the seeds. The pink is better but not much !
the Shooting star hoya is very cool !

Hey Rachel!

Can you tell us more about Philodendron joepii?

Here is the inflorescence of Alocasia x amazonica.

candela,
Love the hoya, I have wanted one for so long. Finally got one last week and it even had a little bloom on it, but with the shipping, it fell off. I can't wait until it grows more and gets more blooms. How old is that one?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Love all the flowers and plants... I'd love to have a bornio giant here... but there's little room... I did import one from Bornio a few years ago... but it died in the winter here... [ inside ] .. I do still have a lovely 4 color certificate from the gov't there... maybe in another garden...
since this is a tropical garden thread... here's the entire garden here..

the shooting star hasn't even opened up yet. it really looks like a shooting star when it does. all of my hoyas are a few years old. i bought a hoya lauderbachii (sorry if i spelled wrong) i can't wait for that to bloom the flowers are supposed to be as big as your hands.

Gordan,
Where do you put all those during the winter?

Dave, nice inflorescence on your Alocasia.

Philodendron "joepii" is yet to receive an official published scientific name but Joep Moonen collected the plant in 1991 from French Guiana. According to what I have been told and read, there is only two specimens left growing naturally.

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

Gordon, garden looks great..and I think there's room for one more Satalite Dish over there next to the other 4 or 5 **LOL**

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Candela your gardens are beautiful. I miss Florida.. alot. Your pictures remind me of why.
Gordon, tell me wherre the tree is rooted at.. is it n the ground? or a huge tub? You have done what I would have wanted to do if I lived in a big skyscraper city like that. It is way cool. I am glad you love plants and found a way to have them there.
Borneo Giant is tempting for me, maybe next year.

well... thanks...
GA Girl.. oh.. some stay outside... some come down stairs to the house.. under 3... 400 watt MH lights.. on 6 + 10' motorized tracks..others winter up there.. in a cool room I build up every year in the fall... about 8' x 10 '.. x 10 ft tall I build it out of the 2" builders foam.. so it's more isulated than a freezer.. heated with a tiny heater.. in the spring I first cut a few holes in the roof.. and add plastic to make a wake up greenhouse... during the winter it's pretty dark inside.. for dormancy... although some things keep their leaves with the glow through the foam of the sun..this year I might give most away.. and just buy new ones... it has to be less expesive to replace everything
DirtyGirl.. well.. the dishes are on th e roof next door.. they are the resturants tv feed... and their hook ups to the lottery.. where they buy numbers and such.. from the state....I used to have one from direct TV.. but after them billing me for services they knew I didn't have as their tech department was unable to fix the problem... I went to cable.. it used to be on an unused chimnee top/ but it was replaced by 4 gigantic night blooming cereuses... [one pictured with it's 3 buds ] this one was from Cathy in CA...
is one blooming for the first time this year... from patookie .. outside Nashville..
Candela... well thanks... you've got the greatest collection... and best climate for everything ..I work out here but with such envy

Debra... HA HA HA... Tell them where the plants go in the winter... Love your basement.. this is aa closer up view of the back 1/2 of the garden.. the Japaneese Maple tree is in a 4' x 4 ' planter... about 20" deep... the planter sits 4' up off the roof.. over a vent stack. so it's drooping branches are below ground level.. .. but off the roof... It comes as a result of an article Fine Gardening ran on them and the guys that graft them as art..... one was a Mr wolf.. a real gem... outside Philly... I drove down and spent a few days on a couple of trips with him... and brought this one .. and an oridio nashiki.. back with me some 12 - 14 years ago... ON is in the front 1/2.. I almost lost them this year.. as I was away for two weeks... after they were totally leafed out in the spring.. and my helper who has been with me for some 6 years.. we do gardening for a bit before work every day.. well he was hired to come in every few days to water ... and on my return both were leafless.. this sparse growth shown is the regrowth of some of the limbs... alot were so crisp they were removed... it set them back years.. needless to say he was paid as he said they were indeed watered.. and the underplantings looked good... but it was done like mother would say.. with a lick and a promise.... [ just some superficial care ].. but in my grief he stopped comming by to work.. and I never called him to find out why... he worked for 6 years... his father worked for 4 years before that.. he didn't get that if you water a dry container... it first falls out through the space in the sides where the soil has pulled away.. and nothing gets into the soil... with such a canopy on everything.. not a drop of rain will get to the container in the rain.. .. it can rain for days.. and I'm watering before the sun sets when it stops... the drip irrigation was dismantled 20 minutes before my trip to fix a leak in a line running down the 5 floors to a planter on the sidewalk... with the morning glories... growing up 30' every year... and across the doorway as an awanning.. well in my rush to leave it was not turned on correctly.. or had been chnged in my absence.... so it wasn't working...it is complicated to grow so much in containers.
plumeria grove shown about 1 - 3 o'clock in the photo also..got some inflos there too...

Hard work and dedication to your love of green things certainly shows, Gordon. I bet you can't stand to leave your place.. I know I can't, and I have not even a third of what you have..

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

leaving...yes.. that's an ongoing complaint here abouts.. too.. it's likely going to cost me dearly.. and I'll loose it anyway..

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Gordon,
Well, your garden has caused me to suddenly have a limited vocabulary, as I just keep sitting here going "Wow....Wow....Wow" lol amazing !
And now I know I'm going to give up on the brugs ! Driving home yesterday not too awfully far from the farm, I had to slam on the brakes and back up.....there along side a 6 ft privacy fence was a hughhhh Peach Brug, litteraly dripping with blooms.
uhh umm, now mine have barely grown, ( 3 feet tall if you stretch it) much less bloomed. I've fed, I've fertilized, I've moved the one that's in a pot to a bit more shade , it at least looks a little less "blah". And yesterday I pulled yet another of those Tomato horn caterpillars off the Equador Pink ! errrr
So I enjoy pics of the brugs here ! LOl...not like I don't have anything else to grow in their place.

mjs, I am so glad it isn't just me and brugs. No matter what Ihave tried they just don't make it here. They live but they never bloom and thrive like they do for my neighbors.

Gordon, if you have to give your plants away you know you will always have friends here who would help you to build your collection up again.

ardesia,
LOL......yes, I think they just don't like me....but my vines do !
Are you in the way of the storm where you are ?

Everglades, FL(Zone 10a)

joeswife, I am in love with your variegated tapioca. I grew up in Miami with them and had only one in the past 25 years. I finally got one a few weeks ago (mailorder) AND AM TICKLED TO DEATH. They are very easy to propagate but I had nothing to begin with. I lost my mature one in the cold snap we had 2 years ago. I think it is my favorite plant of all times.
Regular tapioca grows wild here and is very poisonous, I've been told. Definitely not the pudding kind!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks for asking but no, thankfully we are well south of any bad weather. The weather is just beautiful here today although there are supposed to be huge waves and nasty rip currents at the beaches.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Cyber, thanks. Most everything I grow here in Kansas, meets the "Poisoness" label. Good thing there are not any small children around right now.

South fence this am, but it looks different now, we had 50 to 60 mph winds and things got tore up a bit. STILL NO RAIN

DaletheGardener sent me some "Native MG seeds" two years ago. Here is the result of that grow out, I put these in this basket, and now it is glued to the ground. ANY ID from all u Floridians? It is not the MG we thought it was.

Should I re-pot these? Cut the leaves off where they are damaged? Help! I am getting ready to move them inside.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

These three Passion vines are crosses from Tropicman, and they stayed in the south facing window all winter waiting to get outside. Now they are out, and I don't see blooms. Should I climb a ladder? cut them back? NOW WHAT? You can see Rita's Chalice vine going crazy in this mess , too. AGAIN. HELP! They have to come in sooner than I planned. It is getting down to 56 this week. Sure they predict a warm mild winter. For us here in Kansas, that is like 30 instead of minus 20.( wind chill)

Hello Everyone! those are very interesting and beautiful pictures!

I have good news and Great news. The good news is that I have my DGS settled in at his dorm. The Great news is that we got 2" of rain.

RachelLF, those are cool plants, you are accumulating quite a collection, you might have to get a bigger house! lol
Funny thing, I just lost Philo. Joepii for the 2nd time on E-Bay. I will have to keep on trying.

candela, I always enjoy your visits! I agree with everyone on the shooting star Hoya, mine has been blooming ever since I took it out of the GH.
I could not find anything on 'angioptus evectra'. Does it have a common name?

Gordonhawk, those are some great shots!!

Stephanotis are just now starting to bloom.

Happy_1, I was hoping that the Borneo Giant would be twice as big as last year, but instead, it is putting out quite a few pups.

ardesia, I am glad to know that you will not be affected by the hurricane!
