Plant propagation part XX based on my own experience

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, I'll take your cracked fruit any day. Mine look good as green tomatoes go. LOL, It is the color that bothers me. Red has always been my favorite color in cars and tomatoes.

Dave, you guys are going to have a new house when you get done. That is nice. You have a lot of patience to be living in the mess of remodel tho. Most men can't stand it. My dad used to just hate the vacuum running when mom was cleaning.

I sure didn't get anything done today. It was suppose to be 67 but right now at almost 5 o'clock it is 66 so they do come close.

Lotta wildfires going on around us. All the dry areas. We are really pretty green here.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Dave, I used the following address to send the seeds

7512 s 67th east ave
Tulsa, OK 74133

Could it be possible that due to the remodeling you did not notice a relatively fat white legal size envelop?

I had another appointment today with the eye surgeon....... the right eye's vision is presently 20/25

Last night the temps dropped into the 50s ..... mid 70s today .... suppose to be in the 80s tommorrow and low 90s on Sun.

JB .... I realized you want rain ..... but take advantage of this outdoor (and greenhouse) work friendly weather.

Dawn, I have been a thinking about the Rose of Sharon plants. I am thinking of potting them up and keeping them in pots until they bloom. Then planting 3 of diffenent colors together as one bush. That way I will have what appears as a multi-color flowering shrub. What do you think of that idea?

Sharon sweetie ..... I hate to bug you ..... but please post pictures of the irises you recently planted. Did you mark them? I reaaly enoyed the photo of the fish with their mouths ajar.

JB ~ I say for tomatoes, the taste is more important than the appearance, would you not agree? (Unless you are entering them into a county fair beauty contest...LOL!) I would rather have better taste as the supermarket tom's are OK in looks, but not so good in flavor. ( I hope your birthday was happy...any birthday is happy if I am alive...) Glad your business is picking up. What is your ebay name?

Dave ~ Cooler here today too! Whew! But it might even rain tomorrow...for one day, and then..."chance of sprinkles"...like JB says...s**t. You are quite busy...growing, remodeling...don't wear yourself out now, OK? (I get over-ambitious and then I am out for days....)

Jeanette ~ Thanks for asking...it is a combination of things going on, and yes, I am under the care of a professional. Do your brugs overwinter outside? Mine never grew, but I planted them in the ground. Maybe it was the soil in that bed. Quite expensive and time-consuming to have no flowers at all. Do you grow them in sun or shade? You are cutting the leaves off your tomatoes?? Why? I have heard if you cut the plant back that it will flower better, but cutting the leaves?? I know it is good to do that when you are taking cuttings of some of the larger leaved shrubs....

Mary ~ I could not find anything in the mouse???

Jill ~ Absolutely beautiful slope...love the water feature....and, yes, what are the plants growing there?

Sharon & Dawn ~ You are neither mad dogs or Englishmen...stay outta' the heat, hear me?? (That's what my granny used to say to me...)

Have a good night all...

~ Evelyn

Marry:
it could be. I will be cleaning up next week so I hope its just sitting in the mail. we usually go through it quickly and it might have been a day I was down and the girls just put it on the pile. thank you for the heads up on it. I will definately be looking through the mail next week. I have not been able to file stuff so its piled up.... ok its also some past stuff too.

I am used to it as we did the condo over 5 years of this or that. 2 water damage floods really did it in, in the condo. yes it will be a new home I hope. the idea is to get it all done so we can sit back and just be for a while.

I know this winter I am going to break out my stained glass stuff to play with. i felt like I wasted my time and energy on seeds and cuttings. I miss doing the panels. I did a pelican for my folks lake place. it was like 24 x 36"....

Have a great evening
dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, what a neat hobby. Stained glass. Did you take classes for it? Cool. Post some of your pictures. Would love to see the pelican. I'm sure you took a picture.

Mary sounds like your eye is right on. That's good.

No Evelyn, it is too cold here to grow the brugs outside. I have some in the sun and some in the shade. This one is in the shad because it is so big it needed the support and protection of the house.

I take the leaves off and also I cut about 18 inches off the tops that were flowered but not producing (too late to grow more) to get them to ripen the tomatoes they have on them. Some people hold back water and some cut the roots with a shovel. All ways to stress them into ripening the tomatoes.

You see, the local news (by local, it is a hundred miles from us) they were talking about frost tonight. Tomatoes need 50 degrees at night to do anything. Right now, they are talking about a week of 40s at night and then back up into the 50s.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I will plant brugs in pots to over winter since they don't transplant well plant files said. That is why I did not disturb the one I have. It is growing slowly but a bit taller each year. It is still about 1 1/2 feet tall, maybe 2 feet. I love the yellow Brugs.

I think the multi colored bush idea is great Mary. Cool idea. I did that with a rose once and for some reason it grafted itself into the bush and now actually grows two kinds of roses. It is at my X's house. I should see if it is blooming since I have to go over there for my grand daughter's 2nd bd tomorrow. It is weird. The original bush is part of the other one now.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I wonder why someone would say they don't transplant well? Maybe it is the time of year they are trying to do it. This spring I pulled one of mine out of the pot and took a knife and cut off all sides of the root and then turned it over and cut off the bottom 3 or 4 inches of root. Then I put it in fresh soil in a bigger pot and it got very big this year. That is until I killed it by over fertilizing it.

But I have never had any trouble transplanting brugs. I do it in the spring and sometimes the fall for convenience at the time.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Or, maybe I have just been lucky. LOL

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

HMMM. I have no experience in this, just read it here somewhere. Ok that is good news.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I would say that to transplant in your area, pick the coolest time you can without freezing. I hate to say that 'cause I don't know anything about your weather. Maybe I should say if you have a couple of weeks in the 60s? to do it then?

The thing to remember about brugs is that they take a tremendous amount of water. Even here where we dod not have your heat, and I have it in a container, they have to be watered with a hose daily. So, think of it in your heat. Also, it your climate you probably would have to deal with spider mites which are nasty critters. They are a magnate for that. Preying mantis would be good in that case.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

That usually does work the best here too.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn, just a thought, but you should be able to plant your brugs in the ground and just mulch them good and they should do well. That would be the easiest way to take care of them. They would probably die back in the winter, but then come up from the root.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Sounds good, but my last experience was someone sent me some in late winter and paid $24 to ship or something and sent three, they were all fine, but the ground was still frozen and none of them made it back from the dead. I am not sure if fall would be better for them to adjust to the cool evenings before the winter.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

As I was wateriing one of my large planters today .... A frog jumped out! He just sat there.

I said "Mr. Froggy, you are welcome in my garden any time. But the house is a no no!"

Jeanette:
I was very fortunate in that my best friend was a teacher in stained glass so he taught me what he could. He passed away on christmas day in 03'. He did some magnificent things. I am planing to take some classes with my mom and dad. they mentioned it when I told them I was setting back up for the winter.
I have this panel in my mind thats dieing to get out. its a sunset over a valley with a waterfall along a big stream. I have a big tree I am planning on working into it. Its one of those things you think about and toss around untill its time to put up or shut up.
I did a Pegasus thats like 30" wing tip to wing tip. I want to put it in a panel. I also did a humming bird wind chime. the wings move up and down and there are 8 or 9 glass chimes hung from the wings along the edge. its a unique sound. I like to do tropical birds fish and nature. I will try to dig up some pics to share.
well its bed time for bonzo
the pic is of my girl Mercy its about 8 month's ago

If the ground is frozen I would say you are going to have to take them in in the winter Dawn.

Bob saw a little frog sitting on the lawn mower today too Mary. LOL, funny you should say that about the house. We use dto have one frog that was constantly getting rides into the house. On almost everything we brought in off the deck. Even a box of pears once.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

That would be fun to take classes with your mom and dad in the winter Dave. Lots of fun. Great way to spend the winter. You must be close with your folks. Thats good.

Mercy is a doll Dave. Bet she's sa lot of help.

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

The yellow spike flowers are foxtail lilies- they come in different colors
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/905/

Mine usually only make it a few yrs before dieing out, but then I think I'm pushing the zone for them (bad habit of mine)
Of course, with zone, it always depends on whom you ask and how badly they want to sell it!

Also, a lot of things on the edge can make it if they are mulched heavily.

Well, it was 39 degrees when I checked at 6:30 this morning. Getting down there guys.

We have had about 1 1/2 months of summer this year. I guess we are paying for no snow last winter. It was a long cold winter, but no snow. So, we had a short, warm summer.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Oh my, Jen and we are going into another heat wave. I need to move West. LOL

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I second that JB... we hit 92 today of course I am not complaining. its a lot better than the triple digits.

well we got the floor down and all we have to do is paint it. we have to save our pennies for carpet so if you see me on the corner with a bucket please honk....

well I managed to get 2 drains put into my north bed. our neighbor came over complaining about rain water backing up in his yard and washing away his dirt along the sidewalk. we came to the conclusion that we needed to put in a few drains to solve the problem. once he saw what we were dealing with he calmed down especially when we were not argueing with him. I hope it is fixed now, I am in no shape to be digging a trench for more drain pipe. I found this 6" wide one inch tall plastic waffeled sheet covered with a heavy felt like material. I laid it flat but I am sure it would work up and down too. the pic is of the second trench. it about killed me as I was way past time to lay down. oh well I can die tomorrow and monday.

I bought a new soluble foliar feed 20-20-20 with minors. its got .02% copper, 0.10% iron, 0.05% manganese, 0.0005% Molybdenum, 0.05% chelated zinc ... The 25# tub was $54.00 but I really wanted it. I used a foliar feed when I was growing tropicals in south florida. I had a couple hundred Bleeding heart vines that the leaves were so green they were almost black.

ok who can pronounce Molybdenum??? ......................... mol - lyb - de - num ..... its a mouthfull. poinsettia's have a higher need for this nutrient

JB you might want to look into it as another plant to grow. I fell in love with it. .... You do need more plants to grow don't you???? lol

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/506/

well I am going to lay down after I take a quick shower. I know it will feel mavvvaalous ...just maaahvalous..... I did spell that correctly didn't I???

I will pot them Jeanette so I can bring them in or put them in the cargo container in the winter where it is much warmer in there. We get frost and have to scrape car windows in the mornings if the cars are not under a cover of some sort.

I have a few toads out there but they have to climb stairs to get in. I think they love my bugs so it is a win win for them and they can eat my black widows if they can.

Avian I want some of those seeds if you have any to spare? I'd push it too for those flowers.

Dave Avian would be beyond pushing the zone on that one, I think. Nice no wonder I never heard of it.
Do you grow geum's? Some person here told me I should grow them and they come in many colors, I never heard of them unless I know them under another name. I looked them up but need to find some seeds in the seed trade I think to try some.

I am sending Mystic Merlin Malva seeds out if anyone wants some while I am collecting and off Monday so I can mail them.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Dawn .... I would appreciate some Mystic Merlin Malva seeds.

Since I did not know what they were I google it and found this picture of them at the Parks Seed website.

They are stunning

I would like some.

My worker showed up this morning at 8am. He worked on trimming back the climbing fig vine on the courtyard and that took two hours. It is really skinned but will be back in full vigor in less than 2 months. It goes up about 20 feet and I cannot get up on a ladder so I had to have someone do it that understood what I wanted. He did exactly what I asked. He is a legal young man, 25, from Mexico. Has been here since he was 14. Speaks good English and is learning gardening skills rapidly. I usually only have to tell him something once. We worked until 5pm but we did break at 12:30pm for lunch. Two eggs, over easy, tamale covered with chili with cheese and sour cream. I worked that off by 2pm. But I do not feel like eating anything now but have drank about a gallon of ice water.

Tomorrow is a day of rest and then Monday and Tuesday will be a full day.

Jnette, I cannot believe you are that cold already. We do not get that cold until the end of February. We had wind today and temps somewhere in the high 90s. The wind was somewhat mild and it made the temperature beautiful.

Merry, I will take photos of the irises Monday and get them posted.

Avianut, I am always pushing the zone. I have been surprised many times what will grow here that is not suppose to but mulch and filtered shade does help. I do not have the cold weather to deal with, just the heat. Our humidity today was 3% and dew point 0. Cannot get any drier than that.

Dawn, did your weather cool down?

Dave I cannot believe you had to do that digging. That is about the worst thing you could do to your back. You are a nice neighbor. If you were my neighbor I and I am sure all of us would have been over there helping you.

JB, I am going on Marketplace to see what you sell. I have not been on e-bay and have no intention to go there.

I discovered the problem with the roses by the driveway this afternoon. I have a barrier to hold the Mimosa roots in their own space which is above the roses. Well the sneaky tree tossed a few over the barrier instead of through or under. It had put out water roots throughout the areas and the 5 roses were very thirsty. Well the roots and its feeder roots are gone, again. I guess I need to check once a month.

My first grandchild, Hannah, will be 19 tomorrow. She is going to college in Hawaii the first semester and will be leaving soon. She has switched from Medical to English

Everyone have a nice morning. I am going to sit on the back patio and read the paper before I have breakfast and face the world tomorrow. Love you all. Where are you Evelyn???

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Hellnzn11- They are bulbs, so I've never actually saved seeds, and as near as I can tell the bulbs don't multiply naturally (or, mine die out too fast to know)

Dave, I do love that Clerodendron! Did you find a seed source for it, or are you growing from cuttings? I know it's 'way out of my zone, but I could cut it back and bring it indoors for winter...

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Wonder what happened to Linda, Ibartoo? Anyone know? Lee drops in and out when she can, but this has been a long time for Linda.

That is too bad about Hannah changing from medical Sharon. I think anything in the med field is going to be where it's at for the next couple of decades anyway. Oh well, she knows what she wants.

gottta get busy.

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Dave- when I blow up the pic of Mercy, it looks like an adorable double exposure to the right of her face... Did you do that on purpose? Very cute, regardless!
Jillann

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Jill, you've got awfully good eyes to see that or else it came out more pronounced on your computer 'cause I can hardly see it when I am even straining. LOL It is cute.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

OK, this is the last straw....I just posted a very long post...am I being shut out? What is going on?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Evelyn, when that happens try clicking on your back arrow, or go up and click on the little round arrow at the top in your toolbar. Sometimes they will work for me. But, not if I click on anything else before trying them. You might try it. Or, another thing, like Sharon or someone said, when you get several paragraphs, you might copy them just in case and then if you lose them you can paste them back in. You should not have to do that but, I don't know why, but mine does the same thing for a short time and then it seems to straighten itself out. For a while that is. Until nexst time.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

That happened to me the other day, I posted one here and left and when I got back it was not there.

Ok I will go look at the box you sent me Mary, I have it in my garden to break down my soil. I can get your address off of it or you can send it.

Sharon I have yours around here I think still. Did you ever get the hh seeds I sent you?

Mercy is adorably beautiful Dave, what a looker that one is.

Thanks for the info Avian. I did not know. My friend here in Oregon owns a nursery and she is always looking for stuff that would do well for me. I love roses but I think I have too much trouble with them blooming in this yard. I don't know but I think I am going to switch to hardy Hibiscus if this one does good and so far it is doing great. I need some plants that bloom all the time and get large and shrubby. I love vines but not many are ever blooming but roses to my recollection. They use so much water which is an issue for me and I have so much shade now, that that even screws me up more. :('

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I did not lose my post, it just did not post when I posted it. I did not get a bad girl warning or anything when I hit send. I left and it was still on the sent page when I came back on, so I don't know why it vanished.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

OK, I will try again....

Sharon ~ I am here! I have been away from the computer for various reasons, and one very important one...I am getting everything ready for the fall season. I plan to start a lot of new things this year as well as fall veggies. Is anyone here doing the same? Also I have been working on digging the trench for my asparagus bed. The 'Purple Passion' asparagus will be arriving this coming fall from Gurney's and I want to be ready for it.

Jeanette ~ Thanks for asking, I am better. And it is a combinations of things...some ongoing. Thanks for sending us the cooler weather. We only got a few raindrops so far, but we will take cooler. It is so difficult to work in the heat...even though it is not as bad as JB, Dave or Sharon have it. Anything over 80° is hot to me these days. I work so long and then I cannot see from all the water dripping...then I have to go inside. Wha'cha' cloning these days? (I would like to clone myself to get all my work done...LOL!!) Do you sow your sweet peas there in the spring or in the fall? I am getting ready to sow some. If you would like some LMK, OK?

JB ~ The Vicary privet are still looking good, so LMK when you want them, OK? How is your weather these days? Any cooler? High winds yet? (I sure hope not......) I am glad that your business is picking up. What is your ebay handle? Do you have your own website?

Dave ~ I hope that you are not overdoing it. (The digging and all...) Mercy must really be a sweetheart, huh?

Jill ~ My foxtail lilies are about 6' tall, well at least the tallest one, anyway...here it is in my "Peach of a Garden"....it was taken July 7th and the only other flower near that tall was the 'Beverly Sills' iris....

Dawn ~ I have lost several posts here today. I do not know why. It is inconvenient to say the least.

(edited for poor spelling...LOL!)

My first post...I have been working on a mist system at my house. Any thots on what is the most efficient height of the misters from the bench?

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

cool, that looks nice. I have not started anything for fall but a few seeds in cups. I will direct sow some stuff soon. I need to add extra watering things so they won't dry up until it stays cool. It was very cold last night and the last two days here were windy, but today was quite cool. Fall like weather, gives me hope of having Fall. We get screwed out of it most years. It is just summer and winter, we get hosed on fall and Spring often.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I find that those systems work much better for me if I put them up on pvc pipes so they can work even when the plants get taller. My h is so tired of making adjustments for crowding and growing plants.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh dear dear me .... there you all go again ..... talking over my head ..... but thats OK .... I'm not going to worry about jargon I am clueless about.

I am no where ready to leap to your league. I am just going to use the KISS method .... and use baby steps ... no giant leaps for me.

Dave's last picture of Mercy .... had me saying "OH, MERCY, MERCY, ME" "SHE'S AS PRETTY AS PRETTY CAN BE" ... definitely a heart throb.

Evelyn .... it is very frustrating to lose a post .... esp a long one. Your property appears to be huge. I would appreciate a few Sweet Pea seeds .... what colors are the flowers?

JB and I are in the throngs of another heat wave .... acorns are smaller this year and have begun to fall .... more JM seeds starting to fall .... seems kinda early for that to happen.

LOVE YA ALL

MARY

I am looking forward to seeing Sharon's pictures .... hope she discloses how she marks (labels) them.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Yes, Dawn, many times, just summer, then winter...it was quite cool here as well. I don't think it got over 60°, but I will check later for the sake of accuracy, as *sometimes* I am off!

Mary ~ What color do you want? Or mixed ones??

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Evelyn, I assume you have the perennial sweet peas? Otherwise you wouldn't be planting them this time of year right? LOL, what colors do you have? Would love some. Thanks.

Mister height? I think before we could help you, or suggest anything we would have to know more about your set up. Are you talking about in a greenhouse? What kind of plants? How big? etc.
