Propagation: Plant propagation part XIX based on my own ex

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

My grand daughter that is home from college for the summer works at a yogurt shop. I think they have the same. I know they have the bubble top. They are going to the beach Saturday for a week. I will have to see if they ever give them away. Maybe I can get you some for you to take home. Do not forget Dawn, I can get you as many planting pots you want for free and just about any size you want. But they have to be cleaned.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

You guys have been a chatty bunch tonight. Yes, Evelyn, where are you? Can't get a word in edgewise? That is the good thing about the computer, it is always your turn next. LOL

JB and Lee must have gone to bed. I know it is late there and JB works soooooo hard. I don't know how she does it. Must have done it all her life so she is used to it. I used to also, but after so many surgeries it has been difficult to work a hard as I used to.

Oh well, I keep telling myself I am retired. That's an excuse?

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I was raised that you quit when you were done not when you are tired. Pounded into my head by my father since birth....

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

If you can, try one of those cups for seed starting, it works so fast and a perfect terrarium atmosphere. I imagine it is good for rooting since I broke off the top part of my mellon plant and stuffed it back in and it has not died, so it must be rooting.
That is good to know Sharron. I have a lot of 1 gallon pots and some 2 gallons, a few 5 and a couple of larger ones that I recently used but I want to transplant roses in larger ones in my lasagna garden so the gophers don't get them and in case I buy another house, I can drag them with me.

Janette, chime in please. It is nice when everyone is busy and chatty to me. We are all happy in our gardens and lives, while we can garden. The Fall is my easiest season to get a start to the next season's yard.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

I am here. Just need to go out and water everything. Weather is supposed to go into the 90's. Like everything else, day late, dollar short. The yard look like heck. Well the wedding is this weekend, so should have pictures of the little dresses some time soon.
I bought some systemic rose food for those stupid white flys, however, it says don't use in containers. Why??? They all have drain holes, don't you think I would be able to use the weakest solution?? They are really bad, and I don't want to bring them into the house. I have tried other methods, to no avail. I washed them and half-hr later, they were back. I have lots of the houseplant palms, and use them in my outdoor room between the house and garage. Usually I just bring them in for the winter, and reuse them. I also have oleander trees (2) and hibiscus tree (1) that are blooming. They are just full of the darn white flys. Please, someone tell me I can use the systemic in the pots. It will be another disaster if I can't. JB, you do the tropicals, any other ideas. These plants are so big, it would take me a year to do each leaf by hand. Waaaa waaaa crying again. Two years in a row, enough is enough, my yard needs me. :) Lee

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Usually the container tells you how to use in both. I can not imagine why you could not use it. Maybe spraying it instead of putting it in the ground, I do not know because I have no clue what kind you bought. I would google it on the internet and look into the uses more thoroughly.
Today is Jasmine Propagation Day. I intend to cut and plant as many as possible in a few hours and then pray they survive the heat. I am thinking of putting the pots in flats of water to be sure they do not dry out. It works well most of the time. I buy the flats without the holes. You must be careful not to let the water get ugly. Fresh water is the best each day.
More Later. Oh, I got two orders since putting up the things on Market Place just a few days ago. People are anxious for Fall and indoor plants. I wonder why?????????????/
not the heat! It has been such a wonderful lovely cool summer...........maybe in Alaska.
Hugs. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Lee, first time this has happened but I am losing a brug due to the Bayer Rose 2 in 1 I used in a container. The brug is a fairly big plant but guess I used too much. I have never had this problem before. I have been using it for years. Now, I don't know if the fertilizer or the systemic made it sick. Maybe they are going cheap and putting more fertilizer in there now.

The container is probably a 2 gallon.

If your containers are fairly large I would say as long as you don't over do it that you should not have any problems. I really did use a lot this time 3 capfuls on this plant. The plant is about 4 or 5 feet tall and fairly wide. But, I just got too much on. So, that should give you an idea.

What kind of systemic did you buy?

I am going to take the plant out today and repot it. That should help it.

Let me know how you do.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon, you keep telling us how great your yard is and then in the next breath you call your English garden a mess. Maybe you should give us pictures of both so we can judge for ourselves. I do not mean individual plants. I mean pictures of the whole thing. Parts of the yard are fine, but not individual plants.

I do not think I am going to get any ripe tomatoes this year. I had one large cluster that was just about ready to pick and the entire cluster disappeared. I don't know what took them. The lady in the feed store in town suggested raccoons. Possibly. I sure am disgusted. All it takes is one time like that tho and it puts you back on your toes. We laid out bird netting rolled loosely around the bottoms of the plants. I have found in the past that the animals don't like to get their feet caught in it so they back off. LOL, as long as I don't get mine in it. That could be a nasty fall.

Mary, you should be about done with your surgery, hope all went well. Let us know.

Howdy:
encore is an everblooming azalea. blooms all year well it blooms reast a week or so then blooms again over and over. the guy that holds the patent wont sell liscense to propagate he is doing all the production hisself. 3 gallon pots are upto $30.00 each.
Systemic is a strong chemical. is it mixed with a fertilizer? I would think they don't recomend using it on containers because of that. you can burn up plants quickly if you put on too muck fertilizer. the other precaution is the strength of the chemical. not having a way to leach out of the soil except for in the runoff water can be dangerous to pets and wildlife. it sounds like they are covering their behinds for any lawsuits frivalous or not.
Jeanette: when I stick my cuttings I just use what ever is handy and most of the time it does go through to the bottom. I would think it would be better not to poke all the way down but with as many as I am doing its tough to use such restraints. as you know I get a good success rate so I don't worry about that detail.
the zippies you are using sound perfect, I would just keep doing it as long as it works.
JB did you get any of our rain that blew through the first of the week here? we are suposed to get more on Monday .... I think. fall brings the flowering mums and other special plants that only bloom then. Also fall is for planting... bulbs trees and other stuff. its the second busiest season for garden centers and nurseries.
Well we did not get as far as we had hoped to get this week but the living room look great. covered the fireplace with drywall from the mantle up we plan to get some of the sheeting that is rated for fireplace use and tile over it with granite squares. we spotted a nice brown with pink flexs and some white veining in it. looks fantastic. The pantry conversion fell by the way side as it would have been no more than a glorified closet tiny space. we are turning that corner into an enertainment corner with a huge tv and dvd shelveing.
well too much to do inside so I better get at it.
Stay cool
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Oh yea... how did you get your tomatoe to grow so big. all I got was some a bit bigger than a tennis ball. Its got to be fertilizer and pest controll. my maters are all et up with spider mites (I think)..... planning to rip them out ans start over this month

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, I hope you are getting pictures as you go. Always a great reminder of why you put up with the mess. LOL, maybe you stay out of the way and don't see it. I sure do. Of course, I was normally the one to clean it up.

I am trying to get up the energy to paint the living room, dining room and the hallways in this house. There is quite a bit of caulking that will show if it isn't done good and I have never done it before. Soooooo, guess I will try in a place where it won't be so obvious first. Sure wish I could find me a painter around here. Might ask the guy that owns the hardware store in town if he knows someone. Seems I have been that route before.

You are right Dave about the use of the systemic and fertilizer in containers. Wouldn't it be nice tho if they would just tell you so you got it right. Guess I will try repotting the brug and see if I can save it.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I don't really have to worry too much about pest control Dave. I say this after having the bout with the systemic. LOL, just on the brugs, and the reason I use the systemic is because I am lazy and don't want any problems.

So, I would say your problem is the spider mites. They suck the energy right out of the plants. If you don't get them right at the beginning you have a mess. But, how do you start over now? Isn't your season about over too?

BTW, it is nice to have a conversation with you when you are on here. Normally you are gone by the time I get on.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

The only one they had at Wally was Bayer 3+1. They said to mix 4 tbsp 1 quart water for 1 plant (roses)
4 tbsp 2 gallons for flowerbeds for 12 sq. ft and 2 tbsp in 1 quart water per foot of plant height for shrubs. Do not treat plants grown in pots, flower boxes or other containers. Also says not to spray leaves except for flower beds with the lighter solution. It also says not to apply to soils that are water-logged or frozen.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

What is the 3rd one Lee? The 2 in 1 is rose food and the systemic. Could be why it is more. I think that is more. Also, they have it figured pretty good. But, I would not think there would be anything wrong with using it in containers especially if they are outside.

Anxious to know what the 3rd item is in there. Maybe Epsom Salts??? Would probably call itd magnesium or something.

Oh, BTW, the 3 in 1 is newer than the 2 in 1 I think.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Quote--- 3 systemic products in one. Fertilizer-feeds and renews Insect Control Disease control
Protects against insects and diseases for up to 6 weeks no spraying, just mix and pour.
Analysis Total nitrogen 9 percent Available phosphate 14 percent Soluble potash 9 percent
Derived from potassium phosphates, ammoniated phosphates and Urea
All greek to me ;)

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok, mine doesn't have the disease control. Fungicide. That is good. I would have gotten it if the store had had it. Wonder what kind of disease control it has in it.

Anyway, I would use it a bit lighter than what they say and as long as it is outside I would think it should be ok. One thing, I never fertilize when the plants are dry. To me, wet is not waterlogged. Wonder what that us about. Not to use when plants are waterlogged. Guess that would dilute even more???

LOL, hope this gets them. Does it say it will get white fly? Other than that, I would use neem oil.

Do you have any neem oil??? Let me know and if not, I will send you some.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

No I don't have any neem oil, have heard about it here, but that's it. it has a whole list of critters-Adelgids, aphids, black vine weevil larvae, japanese beetles, adult, lace bugs Leaf beetles including elm leaf and viburmum leaf beetles, leafhoppers including glassy-winged sharpshooters, leafminers including Holly leafminers, mealybugs, psylids scales including armored scale (suppression) and soft scale, thrips, whitflies. diseases listed Black spot, powdery mildew rust southern blight whew, got them all off the label.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, sounds like you don't need anything else. I've never heard of some of those, like glassy winged sharpshooters?????? LOL

If you think you want some neem let me know. You won't unless the Bayer doesn't work. I like it, have used it for years and this is the only time I have had a problem with it. And that was my fault.

BTW, does it get spider mites? I didn't see that. Might have missed it. That is a bad one for me.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

No it doesn't list them. I also have them I think. at least I see lots of webs, not normal open ones either. However, they seem to be in the outdoor room more than out in the open. I laughed when I read some of them, had never heard of them. Thanks, Lee

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

The spider mites normally are found in the new growth, are very hard to spot unless a bad infestation. The webs are very fine and the mites are very tiny. Look real hard on the under side of the leaves. They suck the juice out of the leaves so that would be your first sign. The leaves would start losing their color. Not all of them at once. Just the ones the mites are on.

Hi peeps!

Good news .... the right eye whose previous condiion was in the legally blind state is out performing my left eye.

I can see fairly well out of the left eye ... but the right eye compared to how I see out of the left eye is in high definition.

If I close my right eye ... the view is like donning tinted sunglasses.

While supervising my grandson in planting the 3 azaleas, i noticed that some dry bare soil appeared white ..... this same soil appeared medium tan to me yesterday. my grandson confirmed that the soil was on the whitish side.

This is the first time in ages I do not need glasses when using the computer. YEAH

Jeanette .... the plants arrived today .... I will plant them tomorrow after my appointment with the eye doctor. The picture is of the plants resting in tiny plastic cups containing water.

As the newest regular participant of this thread, I am trying to learn as much as I can from you. I have not had too much success with commercial insecticides ... including bare .... I am not afraid of trying other alternatives ...... I think if I had mite or white fly problem, I would use a garlic spray .... I find insects do not like garlic and will stop nibbling on my plants if I spray them with a solution containing garlic.

Here are some home remedy links for gardening

Mary, you didn't say how the plants looked. Were they ok?

So glad your eye is good. When are you getting the other one done? They normally wait a bit. Also to get a new pair of glasses. I think she had me wait several weeks after the second one was done for my eyes to settle down before getting new ones.

Thanks for the spray recipes. My daughter likes the garlic spray real well. but, I finally convinced her that for aphids to use a strong spray from the hose and she discovered it was enough better that she was carrying her brugs outside once a week in the winter to spray them off. She eventually got rid of them. She hosed the top of the soil too where they lay eggs.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Jeanette .... the plants looked whooped .... as if they had been on a long journey. they were kinda on the dry side. I think they will perk up.

And some more good news ..... i am not wearing glasses now ... it has been years since I have not had to don glasses while using a computer. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I may be one of the fortunate ones that does not need glasses.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I use my glasses for distance Mary.

I wonder if you could maybe cut them back a bit. Maybe try a few? They might look funny for a little while but I am sure you cannot hurt them.

That is too bad.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

ROFL

Jeanette ....at first I thought you were talking about me cutting back my reading glasses.

Thought .... why in the world would Jeanette make such a silly statement ....... I had to reread your post a few times before realizing you were referring to the plants.

I hope Sharon posts pictures ....... I just enjoy her pictures.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, you're right. I wasn't very clear was I? You are suppose to read my mind. That comes from not reading over what I write.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Mary thanks so much for my plant, it looks a bit wilty but I put b1 and peroxide on it and watered all the roots well and it is in my sink, I also put peroxide in it. It will live for sure. I am so glad you came through the surgery fine. Yeah Mary.

I am so achy and tired and too tired to go outside and water anything out front, but it needs it bad, so I put the hose attachment thing that has a bar with holes that go back and forth to water. It is taking all my energy to go out and move it. I have some bulb that is blooming and I am so excited, because I got it at the RU and have no idea what it is. It started out looking like some odd African mushroom, now it is starting to bloom.

Is it your own divide your jasmine day or did you make that up? I am naive about that stuff. If so I am late.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

It's Amaryllis and it is so cool because I have several more that I got at Rite Aid on sale for 50c. but have not planted them. Thought they bloomed at Christmas. HuH?

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Dawn

What are tou reffering to here .... you said

Is it your own divide your jasmine day or did you make that up? I am naive about that stuff. If so I am late.

I have no idea

The plants were sent early on Monday. They are extremely drought tolerant. so I know they will respond rapidly to your tender loving care.

Amaryillis can bloom more than once a year. Google how to care for Amaryillis

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I don't know what I am saying either. I may have made a comment in response to another thread that I thought was this one, where someone said it was divide or root your jasmine day. I don't see the comment here now, so what the heck, don't pay attention to me, it was probably someones day set aside to do that and they just called it that.

I don't feel good today and could not sleep last night. They worked me so hard today outside in the heat and humidity and my whole body aches. So it is a wonder that I can even type.

The only light in my day was Mary's package. They look good and thanks for such a big piece.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn and I have a conspiracy going Mary. We're trying to drive you crazy. LOL

Guess it's just one of those days. I was trying to figure out what she meant also. Just like she probably wondered what I was talking about too. Now nobody knows what we are talking about.

Oh well, it's one of those days. Where do you work Dawn? It sounds like you work outside? It's pretty hot for that isn't it? I thought only Sharon and JB could work outside.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

OK, I had my hair done so now I am again a blond. I went to Whole Foods right after and picked up some fresh Okra. Tomorrow DH gets some fried Okra. I hid the Okra in the fridge so it will be a surprise. I also got him a key lime tart and a lemon tart. So tomorrow he will be a happy camper. I got home just in time to walk two properties with the owner of the landscape company. About half way through the first homes back landscape, which is directly across the street from our home was about halfway landscaped. The owner will pay whatever he is billed and I just about knocked this guy into them pool for all the items that were not done. The next landscape, two houses down was the same. Now he is bringing in a special crew to make sure everything is done correctly.

I got no gardening done today but tomorrow is going to be a great day because I am going to get the rest of the irises planted.

OK Mary, I took an hour out of my late afternoon and did a loop around Canyon Fairways, name of area where I live, and took photos. So please enjoy. I started at the front entrance and then ended at the golf course. Then after that took some photos of our home's front landscape. Enjoy.
