Edibles '10 - Part 2

Thomaston, CT

Both sound good, but I'm eating chilled cuke soup...too lazy to cook tonight!

Thomaston, CT

Jan, the DEP recommended we use mothballs to keep skunks away....it worked.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Sounds like a winner to me.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

We did the moth balls too..helps keep what ever was eating the broccoli away.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I've got something chewing on lots of my veggies, but whatever it is doesn't seem to be affecting the quality of the vegetables. However, I saw the huge deer head for my garden and here's what she did to my sunflowers........

In this shot of my weedy veggie garden you can see the nice Jade Green Beans on the left just beyond the two new rows, and that patch of cukes is only 3 bush cucumber plants. Behind those are 3 young rows of Espada beans given to me by a good friend.

Oh no they beheaded your sunflowers!!!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Yeah, and there weren't even flowers on them yet!! Bummer!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

:(

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

sounds like my house Louise... so sorry to hear it... that's why I only grow dwarf ones on the deck... they are usually safer there

Thomaston, CT

Oh dear, if only the deer weren't so cute looking...still, those sunflowers were at such a nice height....the veggies look good, Louise!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

:( about the sunflowers DonnieB.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Just made concord grape jam. Tasted it and it is too sweet. :( Now I've started the gooseberry jam - that never gets too sweet!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

mmmm homemade jam mmmmm Methinks once again I am destined NOT to have nanking cherry jam. The second fledge of robinlets are feasting on them. Oh well. I grow them to share

Wow, Yankee, your Concord grapes are WAY ahead of mine here!

DahliaNut - those are gorgeous cherries! We feel the same way about our wild blueberries.....enough to share with all the critters.

Thomaston, CT

Never made any jam this summer......still have bluberries, guess I should. Gooseberry jam is yummy, Memory. Dnut, I say let the robins feast.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

OK - what the heck am I growing now? These things are the same colors as a winter squash I grew last year but already the size of a volley ball. And there are quite a few of them.

hmmmmm, looks more like a melon than a squash. I'm looking forward to the day you cut it open and solve the mystery for us! :)

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I might try and pass them off as pumpkins to the neighborhood kids.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

It's a squash, my brother grew them one year, i'll ask him if he remembers what exactly they are when I see him Tuesday. (Thats our fishing day^_^). Its a cross, I think of 2 kinds......

Thomaston, CT

It may not be edible...may be a gourd.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

this is the slowest veggy season here - i think i need to water more

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Woo-hoo! It killed me, but finally did it this year--fresh-picked blueberries!

Came home last night to find a bag of peppers, toms and 1 big cuc on my porch from my neighbor.

and I found a Horn Worm

Thomaston, CT

LOL...the good, the bad, & the ugly!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

A friend came by and I sent him home with a bag of purslane, swiss chard and parsley.

Hallowell, ME

Yankee Cat - your squash is a "sweet dumpling" as near as I can tell. May be a fall back from hybridization (or forward whichever the case may be).

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I have sweet dumplings too. I think this is a cross from last year between the dumplings and pumpkins. There are a whole bunch of these. Enough, I think so I will cut off the ends of the vines. There are a few real pumpkins coming out now, too. The kids in the neighborhood are going to have a great Halloween!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My niece just pulled a 5 gal. pail of Patty's out of hers, she loves them!

And im still picking BB, they start in the 2nd week of July and continue through to Labor day at least. Thats why I encourage early, mid-season and late varieties when choosing BB bushes. ^_^
