Edibles '10 - Part 2

Thomaston, CT

Picked my first ripe tom today...an heirloom yellow one. Something also ate most of the top foliage on the tomatoes, & 2 green tomatoes had large gnawing teeth marks on them.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh no Robin! I hate that when it happens!!!

Didn't see this giant the other day...don't know how I missed it!

Probably a hornworm. I hate them.

Celeste they are easy to miss, they hide and hide well and then go Poof and blow up.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Picked and have made Blueberry muffins. ^_^

Yum.....yes, I suspect hornworm eating the leaves, but chuck eating the tomatoes.

How can a chuck get up to the top of the tomatoes?

Thomaston, CT

LOL...the tomatoes were on the bottom...so, hornworm eating leaves on top, chuck eating toms on bottom....in a fenced garden, with 2 useless dogs!

I picked the 1st tomato yesterday. It was tiny but red - YAHOOOO I got a tomato this year!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Robin - definitely Chuckie eating the toms from the bottom. Bummer! This is the best my garden has done in awhile! Tons of cukes, some great tomatoes, had green peppers for pepper steak tonight, along with some great steamed broccoli. Also have some Jade green beans starting to come in, thanks to you Robin!! You just can't beat this time of year! Had to do a lot of weeding this afternoon, but didn't come close to being on top of it. Just trying to keep around the plants clear of weeds.

Thomaston, CT

Isn't it tough, Louise? The weeds are so aggressive this year....I have poison ivy/oak once again, but it seems to be drying with OTC meds....don't want to listen to my doctor's lectures again this summer. Glad the Jade beans are producing...I planted mine as a second crop & they are just blossoming. Glad you are getting toms, Sherrie.

Do squirrels eat butternut squash? I know it's not anything else.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

squirrels only eat them if they are sauted with vadella onions and garlic

Dont forget the salt and pepper!

Get outta town! Tomato leaves are poisonous REALLY TRULY? Um exactly how poisonous? cuz I put some in salads. uh oh crappola my true luv ets them too. I bet this falls under the 'Experiments I Have to Discuss before Winging It' agreement we made. I'm DOOMED. WHEW googleguy says only 'serious gastrointestinal distress' poisonous; nothing about writhing on the floor til you die poisonous. You would think we would be distressed by now but maybe my fabby homemade dressing is an anti-toxin? Thanks for the heads up Sgt. Yates. Exnay on the tomatii leavesnay in the future.

Hallowell, ME

Robin - I feel your chucky problem pain. I have 3 at last count and all attempts to capture them have failed. I've used lettuce and carrots to bait the trap but they prefer my phlox and cone flowers. Haven't discovered the veg garden yet! I may have to fall back on more drastic measures.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

a friend uses broccolli branches in his traps

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Stinkin squirrel pulled a tomoto off one of my plants that are on my deck, left it on the rail with a big bite taken out of it.

Thomaston, CT

Oooh....I'm missing petals on my cone flowers...he must be eating his way through the yard.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

picked my first toms today. picking cukes tomorrow for my salad, hopefully DH remembers to get lettace in the am on his way home from work. we'll see how awake he is.

LOL, Pixie!! I picked my first "Park's Whopper" tomato today......I'm going to let it "cure" in the window for a day and then that boy's getting taste tested!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Picked my only bean (so far) yesterday. It is a new kind I am trying and they aren't going to be string beans! I opened the pod and ate the beans and they were good. Guess I need to learn a little more about beans. LOL

Thomaston, CT

Shell beans? There are so many pretty ones. Louise, very easy recipe......Saute 1 large onion, 1 clove garlic, & 2 stalks celery in butter (margarine works). Add 6-7 large cukes, peeled, seeded, & chopped, 1 carton chicken or veggie stock, 1 large dill head, 1 tbles. wine vinegar..I use white wine v. Simmer until tender. Take out dill. When cool, puree...taste & add salt & pepper to your liking, chill. When ready to serve, whisk in a Tbsp of sour cream, a few slices of thinly sliced cukes, chopped fresh dill weed, & grated lemon rind. That's for one serving. Enjoy! Had some for lunch!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks for taking the time to post the recipe, Marilyn! That sounds very good!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I picked my 8th cucc today... getting there... going to explode any day now

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

ate my first toms and cukes in a salad for lunch today. DhH had it for dinner, liked the cukes.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

anyone know when a white eggplant is ready to pick... my neighbor has some and they are the size of a small cucumber now

Thomaston, CT

My sister picked hers when it got to be the size of a softball. It did have lavender streaks on it as well.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Ate grapes from my garden last night. Met a lovely young couple from Cambodia walking by night before last. Last night she brought me a piece of Thai basil and oregano. Nice to have a new gardening friend!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hooray for new gardening friends.

We had BLTs with yummy toms from the garden. Also cooked up volunteer butternut and acorn squash that the bad tree rats started to chew. I figured I better pick them before they ate them completely.

Thomaston, CT

Good for you, Memory...nothing like grapes right off the vine! The Thai basil is spicy! Can't believe the squirrels are eating winter squash, Jan.....will mothballs keep them out?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Yum Yum on the Park's Whopper tomato recommendation! Very nice color, size and flavor! I'll be buying more of those plants next year!

Jan - your BLT made me decide to have BLTs tonight for supper. Nothing like a good BLT with fresh garden tomatoes!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I vote for Apple Pie for dessert :)

@Robindog, I don't know about mothballs. I'll have to try it. It's most perplexing.

@Pixie, apple pie sounds great for dinner to me. ^_^

@Donniebrook, MMMMM, it tasted wonderful didn't it?
