Edibles '10 - Part 2

Thomaston, CT

Just took 3 pints of pickles out of the water bath.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Mmmm, pickles. It was easy to keep the weeds out. I built the bed on top of rocks, then put fresh, bagged top soil in. Next year it'll probably be full of weeds. I'm thinking I'll cover it for the winter or something.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Probably a good idea, Harper!

Green peppers will turn red. Some will turn red then orange and then yellow. It all depends on what ones you have.

I will pinch in time. Probably will start next month. Then the plant throws all the good stuff to the fruit and not the leaves, new flowers etc.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I think my peppers are supposed to stay green.

They will turn red. Dont pick one and see what it does.

Thomaston, CT

Yes, Harper....all peppers ripen to a color other than green...you just have to leave them on the plant.

Yes all peppers from Jalapeno's to bell to harbenaro's

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Hmmmmm.....

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I have cukes growing! Can't wait till they mature.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

This is the first year I've planted the bush cucumbers. They're interesting.....I planted three bushes and they have spread out just like the vines I've planted in the past. Three bushes are about equal to the 6 vines or so that I have planted before. We've picked one so far, but there are tons of flowers. My peppers are still small, but my tomatoes are ahead of my usual game!

Last summer I didn't get enough cukes to process....made refrigerator pickles exactly once....this year, I'm giving them away to friends & relatives.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

When peppers ripen (change to red or whatever), they are usually sweeter and contain more Vit.C. They do not keep as well though. Ric

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Got some nice little white eggplants forming. Also my younger one picked his first cuke today. He thanked the plant!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

have been picking bush beans that last few days - they are coming gang busters!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

How are the leeks doing wha? Hoping they are plentiful for soup. I am going to start drying herbage now to avoid the August crunch and to let more go to flower. I am luving red coral leaf lettuce and mustard greens in my salad. Chervil in everything is also becoming my thing. Can you eat chickweed? I have a magnificent crop in the poppy patch (snort)

Thomaston, CT

Yes, too many things ripening at once in the garden....

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

leeks are doing good - need to stand them up though my fil keeps knocking them over when he hoe's and then asks why some are growing sideways??

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

A good man tending leeks is hard to find.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Finally have some cherry toms...about 4...LOL

I only have tomatoes in containers on my deck, never got around to doing my veggie garden this year

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Whoooo Hoooo Thanks YankeeCat and to think I've been throwing the chickweed away! I'm gonna et some before I kill it all. Maybe feed it to my true luv too although he now disects his salad before he eats it cuz he thinks I'm putting 'strange things' in the salad. Note: Strange things=anything that isn't green lettuce.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Ate the first ear of corn out of my neighbor's yard. I picked another one for lunch tomorrow. (I'm so excited - first time I ever grew corn.)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Was the corn good, Memory? That's one crop I've never had much luck with here. The one time it did ok, the raccoons waited until the night before we were going to pick it and ate every last piece. I decided it takes up too much room in my limited sun area.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sounds yummy Yank! Love corn on the cob, i've got a few weeks yet before I get to taste ours. Did pick a cucumber and had a sandwich today, and have picked radish, zuccini, and lettuce.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I couldn't wait to get home and see what was in the garden good to eat!! LOL
I think I was more excited about already having Pepper!! I didn't pick them, let them grow a bit more but this seems early.

Corn was good - but a little small. Ate it raw. Have another in my lunch box. Had peas for breakfast - and then a donut. lol!

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

LOL nothing like Fresh Veggies for lunch is there Yank. Cat ?

Sarge

Glad your corn ripened, Memory.....my peppers are early, too......but I'm going to let them turn red if they don't rot first....last year they were just pathetic.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

cannot believe you have peppers and cukes already celeste!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I started them inside in March :)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

so did i - nada yet - flowers on everything though so it will not be long - peppers were pretty small when i planted them.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Heat mat for the peppers, works everytime. They were at least 14-18" tall when I planted them out.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Picked a nice cuke today.......we have a friend coming for lunch on Sunday and he will get to taste it! :)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

WHOOO HOOO flower buds on the potatoes ^_^ I would LUV to grow corn but I'm space challenged. Pixie that is so exciting when you are away and you come back and everything is just bursting!

Thomaston, CT

I need addresses to send summer squash! I remember reading a funny story (think it was in Yankee) that said "Don't leave your car windows open during summer squash season....when you come back to car, there will be a squash in it"! I may try that!
