I notice my paw paws are falling off in large numbers this year.

Peppers were bought at a local farm market. The toms that I'm getting fruit from, also were store-bought, but some I did from seed have green toms on them. I also ordered 3 different tom plants from Territorial Seed and they are close to having ripe toms on them.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, Yes we cheated as we only did seeds for carrots, beets, basil, dill, radish, coriander, beans, peas, parsley, but bought Vt farm started broc, toms, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, lettuce, kale, Brussel spouts etc. I was away for a good deal of March, so it didn't make sense for me to kill more seedlings as I did last year. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

just checking:)

I remember those pawpaws!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I tried hand pollinating my paw-paws as this was their first year to bloom - and none set. :(

Thomaston, CT

Oh, sorry, Memory..I'd love to taste a paw-paw, unless they taste like a papaya...that's the only fruit I can't get past my lips...right now enjoying Ranier cherries....costly, but I love them & the season is way too short!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

How come so pricey RD? I thought CT had Rainers? Was there a bad crop?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No, not like papaya. A bit like mango, but not as good. Custard texture.

Thomaston, CT

No, Dnut, CT does not have Rainiers in large quantities.....the only ones for sale in the stores are Pacific NW ones, so the price reflects the distance. Pawpaws sound good, Victor, as I do like mangoes.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That would be pricey RD :O Another GREAT reason to come visit for Stampede. We have all the PNW fruit. Corn is yummy now too.

Nothing like cold, really crisp fresh snow pea pods! My plants are loaded. I've never had a dog that didn't love them as healthy treats! Donnie and the girls look longingly into the garden when I go in to pick some. I've had broccoli as well so far, and my tomatoes in the sunny corner of the garden are looking better than ever this year. This heat is good for some things, but brutal for the little green bean seedlings! (Thanks, Marilyn, BTW!)

Thomaston, CT

You're very welcome, Louise! Wish my hounds would eat healthy...they spit the veggies out.....the dale was making noise in the kitchen...I had put their microwaved hamburg in the deep sink to cool....Robs couldn't get the meat, but he ate the waxed paper on top....if this costs one penny to fix, he is history!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Too funny, Marilyn! Bichons must have been vegetarians way back in their history. Mine have always loved raw veggies. Our golden, Cody, also loved the snow peas in particular. When he was on his last legs, he'd make it up to the garden to pick the snow peas I planted on the fence so he could find them. He thought he was getting away with something when he picked them right off the fence. He had the cutest guilty expression on his face, and only the tip of his tail would wag when I'd pretend to catch him at it. Bailey and Carli like the snow peas, frozen peas, green beans, carrots, red peppers, watermelon and tiny broccoli florets. They get them as garnish ...LOL...on their dinner plates as well on holidays! Spoiled? Really??? We've made sure they never get to eat anything from our plates though, so they won't bother us when we are eating.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Louise, I had a mixed terrier that liked his veggies except Lima's. If I put a few on his dish he would look at them like "Do I Hafta", I'd tell him yes and he'd eat them. Holly said I was terrible for shaming him into it. I told her , we make the children at least try stuff, so can he. LOL
We also had a Red Bones coon hound when I was a kid that loved ripe tomatoes and our beagle/basset Buddy used to eat all the Golden apples he could reach on the tree, but never the Red Delicious. Picky eater! Ric

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Our furry friends do get funny 'guilty' looks on their faces. We had a dachshund mic that would pick cucumbers and gnaw on them, but leave them lying around.

Thomaston, CT

Our Irish wolfie LOVED fruit....she would curl her lips & pick off the gooseberries, eat my Alpine strawberries, the neighbors grapes & peaches (too embarrassing!), any kind of fruit we would hand to her, except grapefruit,,,she ate it, but the dirty look she gave me was priceless.

Ric - that's funny about the limas!! Even I (biggo veggie lover) might look at you the same way! LOL The girls don't like cukes....too slick. I am making a cold plate for supper and just gave the girls some watermelon.....yummmmmm....nice and cold! They go in and out with several veggies. One day they love carrots, the next day they leave them dotted all over the floor. They won't eat any of the veggies right off the plate. They take it into another room and put it on the floor first. Whether they leave it there is a good question. I have had several vets tell me that raw veggies are good for dogs to develop a taste for when they are young. They are the healthiest treats for them....low fat, high in good stuff. There are some things they shouldn't eat though, so you do have to check that out.

Marilyn - I'm grinning trying to picture your Wolfie's lips curling! LOL

Sherrie - look at you! Those are looking great!!! I've picked one cuke so far and one of my tomatoes is starting to look orange. I'm so excited to have normal tomatoes this year! It's that sunny corner that's doing it!!

Thomaston, CT

Amen to that! Will spend time tomorrow pickling squash & cucumbers.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Back from California and eating peas fresh off the vine for breakfast. Picked two ginormous cukes. Have a volunteer plant growing something really big - but no one knows what it is. I love surprises.

Thomaston, CT

It is fun, Memory, that's why I plant pkgs of mixed annuals...hope you had fun in Calif.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

welcome back memory - i have volunteer t-plants from the dirt i brought in this spring i've left a few to grow not sure what they will be - a few years ago it was lambs ear that came with the dirt:)

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

You can eat lambs ear. This year I'm eating my purslane. I actually like it even though I would eat it just because it is free. :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My blackberries are close to ripe. Still have paw paws falling off. Maybe the drought.

Thomaston, CT

Wow...son's blackberries are just showing a little color.

The collard greens are being enjoyed even before I pick 'em.

green bell peppers. How big do I wait until it's time to pick?

Cucumbers. These guys are going like gang-busters

Thomaston, CT

You can pick them anytime, Harper, but the longer you wait, the redder they'll become....and less acidic.

Thomaston, CT

Yeah, I pickled some last night.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

My whole veggie bed. I want ds to help me build another one before school starts and he's otherwise occupied.

Green peppers turn red? Who knew? I wish so many things weren't ripening just as I'm about to head out of town. Well, I guess four days isn't that long. DS and DH will be here to eat... if they remember.

Green bell peppers are fully developed but are not ripe as they have not changed color!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

your garden is ahead of mine harper - have a safe flight to california!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

What color are they supposed to change to, Sherrie?

Bill, I cheated and bought established plants. I had started seedlings, then got too busy to keep up with them.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Your garden's lookin' good, Harper!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

September RU anyone???

Thomaston, CT

It does look nice, Harper...no weeds! Mine is more weeds than plants right now. Good project for DS.
