Good one.

I honestly don't know what happened - the system is not supposed to allow that to happen!

Crossville, TN

*brain fart*...OPPPS...Jo

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

*wink*

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

But, but...it never used to do that! I know for a fact that I have meant to hit "Home" there below the "Send" button, without typing anything, but hit "Send" by mistake. Then I went back to see if there was a blank post, but there wasn't. Something's wrong.
And Jo and Susan, you two are so ornery, LOL!

So how are the fair plans coming, Terry?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes! Is it time to get categories and such figured out? In the tomato forum, the need for an "ugliest tomato" contest was mentioned recently... could this be a fair entry, or should we do it within the forum? (We should stipulate, ugliest tomato that you would/could still eat; half-rotten or worm-ridden tomatoes need not apply.)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We are looking at the photo contest "platform" to see if we can use it for the "County Fair." We hope to be able to open it up with categories in early August. Speaking of categories, while a lot of these are GREAT and fun ideas, we will have to keep the list of categories fairly short (and therefore broad). Otherwise, we could quickly wind up with dozens of categories and spread ourselves a little thin for this first virtual "fair."

So I'm thinking something like the following:

Livestock - prettiest/most handsome ;o)
Livestock - biggest
Poultry - prettiest/most handsome
Poultry - biggest
Fruit & Vegetables - biggest
Fruit & Vegetables - prettiest
Canned goods - best-looking or best recipe
Baked good - best looking or best recipe
Arts & Crafts
Flower arrangements

I realize it lumps a bunch of things together, but that's ten categories already. Are there any other obvious categories I've missed? I'm thinking we should limit it to no more than 12-14 categories total.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think you're right about limiting categories. We'll need some guidelines with the categories... For something like "biggest fruit/veggie" I guess we can vote for the one we like best, so we can pick the biggest tomato as our favorite rather than the relatively much larger biggest pumpkin?

Like the photos, maybe it could be more of a "choose your favorite" with categories like "Big Livestock" and "Pretty Livestock" so nobody feels compelled to vote for the "biggest" bull rather than for a really large rooster. ?

Crossville, TN

Would my "Kissing Booth" come under Arts and Crafts...or maybe Fruits and veggies?? Jo

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

Jo

I'm first in line.

Paul

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, another ornery one!
I'm gonna have to start practicing with some funnel cake recipes.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Jo with your beauty you would fit with flower arrangements.

AWWW Bernie and Paul have made my day!! Jo

KY I love funnel cakes...make mine chocolate.

Freedom, CA(Zone 9b)

I am looking forward to trying out the recipes entered! So I can taste before I vote! This is going to be so much fun. Like a world wide County Fair. First ever!

I agree!!! I don't know if anybody else has done this, but it seems like a very fun idea - all the upside of going to the fair, and us city slickers don't have to hold our delicate noses as we tour the livestock barn *grin*

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Every fair has a different theme each year...what is going to be the theme?

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Terry-my barn smells great and so does my livestock!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

I like the smell of critters, as long as they've been kept in clean and healthy surroundings. At our county fair, there's always a mama pig and her piglets in the Petting Zoo area. Baby piggies are adorable, aren't they?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I think a catagory to add in Arts and Crafts would be wood-working

Midland City, AL

I think this year’s theme/guiding slogan ought to be something about bringing all the best things from the past and re-shaping them in a way that they fit well in the future, but I can’t come up with a simple “sound bite” that encompasses that idea. It seems right because that describes the plan. The old-fashion, traditional county fair or harvest festival that just happens to be taking place in the frontiers of cyber-space and can be attended by anyone in the world.
Something like, “The old made new.” But, someone who has more of a gift for words than I do could surely come up with a better way to say it.
Of course, in this case, the "Trash-to-Treasure" folks would definately need a category in Arts & Crafts. lol. (Jim)

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Good theme idea!

Who has the perfect words???

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

DG County Fair

A Virtual Celebration of Harvest Traditions

... just playing with some words.. I'm sure somebody else can string a better phrase!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Tradition with a Twist?

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

Critter! perfect!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I like "twist" -- but what kind of twist? a "DG Twist?" a "Virtual Twist?"

Thanks, Grammy... but I think we'll come up with something better as we play with it... :-)

Ummm, yes.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Maybe County Fair with a virtual Twist.

Freedom, CA(Zone 9b)

How about critterologist plus defoecat:

A Celebration of Harvest Traditions with a Virtual Twist

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

That's a good one Catherine!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

The Pixel County Fair?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Let's use Dave's name somehow. Like A Celebration of Dave's Traditions.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

We could do

Dave's Garden Pixel County Fair: A Celebration of Harvest Traditions with a Virtual Twist

It is a mouthful, but it sums it up nicely.

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

Welcome To Dave’s Virtual County Fair All Show No Smell !

Sarge

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I kinda like "cyber twist" better.

I really like that! LOL

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I think the first part should be the main title and the second part a sub-title (I used to work for newspapers and had to write my own headlines).

Freedom, CA(Zone 9b)

I echo IO1 and woodspirit1
