It's horrible, they are throwing people away. I have a couple of friends who have not found a job in two years now, they're starting to go into their retirement fund. They're college educated people

One friend lives in Fla. got laid off during the middle of this year, has worked for a few companies helping to design roads & highways all over the country. - He recently applied for work as an Autozone clerk, and was denied because he's overqualified, -he cant find a job. The last job he applied for was for 20k/yr, (he used to make 85k), someone else got the job, - he was told at the interview there were over 100 applicants..says he may have to sell his house and move his family to another state so he can try to earn less than he did before.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's awful.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Gotta move where the jobs are. My bil's wife wanted to move to NV to be near her sis, she transferred with Macy's so no problem for her but bil can't find a job his last job was at a pharm company working on the lines. No jobs out there for him, so he's been looking on line, has an interview in OH, guess he'll be leaving his wife in NV

WC - with the list of road projects slated, that is really crazy. Has he tried all the local municipalities??

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yeah, he's tried the state & the county, but they're not hiring, he has an offer in Nevada and Virginia but just until the jobs are finished, (about 6mos in Nev, less in VA), but not at the same pay or benefits. He's considering becoming an assistant teacher, he has some credits, but he's in his 50's so a carrier change is difficult now.
We'll see what happens...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's rough. My friend did switch careers and became a NYC teacher in his 50's.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow...!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - I was very impressed. And, of course, you don't get your pick. He is teaching remedial math to HS kids in a charter school downtown. Mostly kids have been removed from other schools. He has gotten used to it now - his third year, but admits that it's just a waste of time for most. Very few come to class all the time.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

That's a shame, so many people come here from other countries to get an education, risking and sacrificing everything on a chance. - and then you have those here who just throw it away...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes. Very true.

Insane price!

USB 2.0 is a little slow for that size, I have a 1.5T backup with USB 3.0.
- Seagate, green series, (low power consumption), NewEgg had it for about $89

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't have USB 3.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I think it's possible to install a USB 3.0 card on some laptops, on a desktop it's easy, just plug and play...

Cool - was wondering about that. Thanks.

The SSA sent 72,000 stimulus checks to dead people.

classic

The guy handing out the BP claims funds got paid 2 1/2 million for 3 1/2 months of work! I would love to get paid to give out money.

For those of you that were here, you might remember my husband Jim got laid off a year and a half ago. He works at a sawmill that is a starting point for construction etc. that is a indicator for the economy.

At this point the log prices have dropped 2 times in a month and he is getting sceptial that "IF" the mill is open after thanksgiving it will be lucky. Unless things turn around.

Good grief - please tell me this is not going to happen and we will have to live on unemployment again!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Just in time for Christmas...
- Sorry to hear that Sherrie, hoping things turn around for you & yours.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Sorry Sherrie.

We will be fine, just the idea.

Heres the material I picked up at an auction. 9 bolts all different except this one. If its the last thing I do before I do anything else its going to be a bedspread/comforter with matching curtians! If you dont see some progress, grab me right by my ears, threw the computer screen and shake me till I come to my senses.

wow you have two right ears!!

Not going as I saw it. Figured my measurements. Washed material and lost 2" from shrinkage.

What am I doing? I got so frustrated I had to put a tank top on as I was burning up. I will start again tomorrow. I have to or I will have

NO EARS!!! :-)

Day #3
Not sewing for 3+ decades this is becoming a big challenge. Got the sewing machine out and could not get the bobbin to wind thread. What am I doing wrong? Jim can you come help me to see what I am missing, its probably something so small I am not seeing it. Sherie reads directions to Jim.

Jim finds that the bobbin winder wheel was so brittle it broke! Got it fixed.

I have started to assemble the top piece to be the same size as the bottom. Next is putting the batting on (the poofy stuff) and attaching . This will have to be hand done as its too big for the machine. This is a king size bed - not easy to handle.

Update after day 3:
I found 1 of my major blunders why I am struggling. I have 2 cloth measuring tapes. The yellow is 30+ years old and the other new. Now I know why I am struggling to a point. You grab the end, pull and measure. Do you see what I am saying?

When your trying to cut and get things square that can make a bit of difference. I need to go back to school !

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - big difference!

After 3 days of going through turmoil and got mad and had to put on a tank top as I was boiling - NO kidding!!!!

Tomorrow we start on day 4.

Day 4:
Basically done. I wanted 90" x 110" but because of the darn measuring tapes I ended up with 88 x 105 as I was not squaring up and had to keep cutting. Plus some from shrinkage. Oh well, it is what it is. Curtains are next and wont take no time.

Total cost $44 and approx 20 hours. This is Waverly fabric and if you were to buy this and curtains your looking at $300 + but since I did the sewing it is considered seconds and it would be alot less!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

good job, I can't believe those tape measures were off that much!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Market's tanking. Might start sampling.

Germany is at an 18 yr low for unemployment. And they are cutting debt. Why can't we learn from them????

Been burning wood in the fire place now for 3 years. I told Jim that it was too much of a pain as I had to baby sit it, basically every 20 minutes. We are putting in a wood stove. It will be easier and not so much of a fire hazard as I would get that fire place blazing. Plus we wont use as much wood.

The stove is driving us to open the door!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My gold and metals fund is up 24% for the year! Wish I had more $$ in it.
