Garden Projects 3

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Kids would love to play with those walls as forts. Of course, that type of play is not pc these days.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

HollyAnnS, It will last long past me.

Wha, I agree doing it right is always right and the plants are going to survive just fine. They will get a serious pruning in the spring, as I think it best to wait until then for the Ilex. But I need to check on that unless anyone on here knows?

I can't wait for him to get the next walls up and I can get the dirt back in the beds so we can really think about new plantings. He then he will start the stone paths and build wooden steps. We had stone before, but they are not a safe. For planting, I know we have room for a nice Japanese Maple, maybe two as we moved two sizable high bush blue berry bushes out of there and we are not moving them back. We will start looking for nice specimen Japanese maples soon to plant in the fall. We have room for some peony bushes which I have already ordered and more Tall bearded iris, that are already on order, both from coops. I will plant lots of spring bulbs which I am sending in the orders for tomorrow. But until I see the final area, it is hard to plan totally. I think it will be way nicer than the old layout with part of the stairs moved. Here is the old layout. I will post the next phase when it happens. Patti

patti it will look great when it is finished - any chance you will have left over stone for more paths with the new design? specimen jm's nice! have you visited katsura nursery in plymouth yet? web site looks great.

i finished the few feet on that other wall after lunch - now what to do tomorrow:)

Thomaston, CT

Gee, Bill, I have a suggestion.....hop right on down route 8 to my gardens & build some walls! Very nice addition, your last wall. Patti, I can tell your worker is very careful.....everything's neat. Nice that he appreciates the gardens.....nice picks for the new garden!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, I will try to get to Katsura for sure. Thanks for reminding me about them. We are having longer stone walks with the new layout, but wooden stairs instead of stone as I think they will be safer as I stumble into old age.

Robindog, yes he is a gentle work horse. He has done some other jobs for us up in Vt and he left everything as neat as a pin. Patti

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Wonderful job on the wall, Bill! Looks perfect to me.

Ric, great father's day gift! I'm jealous! I was eying one just the other day that I'd love to get, 'cept it's 'lectric, and I'd rather have a gas one, or a 'lectric one with a battery so I don't have to use a cord.

Patti, your project is coming along nicely. Your worker is doing a great job. I have been to that Katsura Nursery. They're really nice. You'll like it.

thx again!

here is the fronting stone i mentioned yesterday - was supposed to be a "topper" on the other way the spot never opened up for it - the back of it is completely flat - as i looked at it and was trying to decide where to use it three thoughts came to mind

1 - a big fancy A if I stood it up
2 - the ace of spades in a card deck
3 - the biggest arrow head i had ever seen - and the indian that fired it must be HUGE!

I think it's your garden alien just waiting to come alive.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I vote for A for Anal - garden-wise, that is. ^_^

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

funny marilyn

i should say the bottom of this is a foot into the ground and square, that makes it look more like what i wrote above:)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

what? do you see the weeds and clover in the picture?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Didn't notice. I'm sure they wake you up when breaking through the ground!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

nice wall, Bill

Can't wait to see the finished project, Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

another day another rock - moved this one in place yesterday - kinda looks egyptian to me

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Nice, glad it is on a tilt otherwise may look like an old grave marker, which could also be kind of interesting. Wish I could move the big rocks about when I find them, but not with these muscles. Will have to enjoy them through your nice pics and projects.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nice wall, but that last rock looks like a nice place to put an epitaph! LOL

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ha ha Pat, we crossed posted...on the same wave length I think!!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

LOL, love when that happens.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it is actually placed in there pretty flat and the back of it is wide - the picture kind of distorts it - will have to see what i can chissel into the sides:)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would get one of those fake arms and have it stick out from under.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i need to post a shot from the back of the rock:) or maybe think about spinning it around.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

That is what I was mentally doing Bill, I drive DH crazy because I move things an inch, step back, move a little more...

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yeah it is a weird shaped boulder - was initially planning on rebuilding our firepit and using it for the back wall

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Maybe it just needs a neighbor or two.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Or an arm.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

heehee

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I was going to say the same thing, looks like a headstone.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

leaving it the way it is:) the view in the picture is what you see coming up from the firepit - from in the yard it looks different - i am willing to put an arm in the ground - who is going to volunteer to give one up?

Thomaston, CT

Looks like the head of a pelican to me.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Elephant head.

Thomaston, CT

Ibis.

A snail.

I got to move flower plants.
You have to wait till they bloom?
Shrubs are done in the spring before they wake up ?

Thomaston, CT

You can move shrubs now unless they haven't bloomed yet.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Sherrie, you can move some perennials now (flower plants). Daylilies will be fine, especially, but make sure they get plenty of water. I would say the same with any perennials you might decide to move.

Nice rocks, Bill.

Ok don't get too excited and stay up all night but I pumped iron and raised the 'Don't Look Here' bed ^_^ Too much sun tonight for pics but WHOA you will be awed! ok that was my little poofy bragging moment (snort)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Dahlianut, I am up and waiting to be awed! My 'Slacker' bed is looking just like it's name. After reading your post I may rename a bunch of my beds 'Don't Look Here Ever' and 'Don't Look Here Either', 'Don't Look Here Today' and 'Don't Look Here Until January' .

Here is the current construction site for the walls that are being replaced with new timbers. Poor guy had it all dug out and then I decided to have him dig out more so I would have a wider bed on the lower level. The actual wall building is quick, but the prep work to get everything lined up is slow going. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My beds have women's names.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)
