HOW is Your Garden Weather In Your Area?

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

Lets Hear it ! How are you Doing too wet, too dry, Just right,?

Oh, it's perty, perty, perty here in Florida. We have the typical summer pattern going on right now, the 90/70 split, as far as temperatures go. Every afternoon, we're getting those little thunderstorms that roll through for about 30 minutes, then leave just as fast as they came in. It's great for gardening because I can get out in the garden early in the morning before it gets too hot to check for pests, then the rain comes in the afternoon. How's the weather up your way, Sgt.?

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

they said we were good for 5 days no rain but that did not happen about 20 min ago it just started lol out of no where light and stright down hadnot quit yet . and the sun is shinen liquid sun shine ;)

Crawfordville, FL

You mean it's raining while the sun is shining? Isn't that pretty? I love when that happens!

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

yep thats what i mean. just like FL does i did get what i wanted done in the garden though . it has passed and cleared up now but the ground in wet i would say 2 tenths that quick and it was done

Crawfordville, FL

I find that having a garden is like having a home. The work is never done. Even when you think you're finished, you can always think of something else to do. I have to pace myself. I allow myself a certain amount of time in the garden every day, but I have to set limits or I'll end up spending all day out there. I start off on pest patrol, then do a little harvesting...then I notice a few weeds that need pulling, remember a few seeds I need to get in the ground, find a tomato that needs staking, and on and on it goes!

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

Honey Suckel,

Yes my wife and the kids think I am obsessed but I just don’t like the weeds you let one weed grow and then another and before you know it you cant find the veggies . as the crops rotate out I try to plant the new ones in to have fall ones growing so I understand and seedlings growing for the new planting it gets my out of the house. ;)

Chicago, IL

Better to be out in the back yard than at the bar or the casino! ;)

lol this is true SM so true

Good thoughts bear good fruit, bad thoughts bear bad fruit - and man is his own gardener.

Boise, ID(Zone 5b)

Here in Idaho we are usually in the 80s and 90s but instead we are sitting in the 60s and 70s with lots of wind and rain and clouds. Annual plants are getting hit the worse, trees were slow to push and it seems more like March and April then June.

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

to day is wonderful it is 76 degrees WNw 5 mph 30.o7 pressure ^ 58% humidity and sunny partly cloudy no rain to be seen nice good dat to finish weeden .

Big Beef Maters doing well ~;>)

Wow, your maters look great. So do your blackeyes. I harvested a huge mess of blackeyes this morning, and picked a few large green tomatoes to fry up with them for dinner tonight. I finally filled a sandwich bag with okra pods (took me about 3 days), so I'll probably fry those up, too. I LOVE eating out of the garden, don't you??

Boise, ID(Zone 5b)

Some people in this area are over watering there stuff since we have been getting so much rain, and then wonder why it has died.
The weather here is mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. South southeast wind 5 to 7 mph, with a 50% chance of thundershowers this afternoon. 59% humidity

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

Yes Mam ,
I sure do there is nothing like it and since we dont use and poisen i can eat it right off the vine if I chose too.;) everything you seen is all been planted from seed or seedling we started this yoer in our pots it has been fun and a learning curve for the kids as wellfor me as i have not done it for a long time . i enjoy it and the maters are showing signs of lil buds and i am excited for the first mater to show up .he he he like the kids
i did get a few radishes out the other day they were as big as a half dollar but there were only afew ready had to replant them you know due to the rain wash out lol.

we are still blessed :>)

I still water if it needs it in the eve if no rain Hun god has bless me too much to slack on my part to let it die LOL .~;)

I think its nice that your children are involved in the gardening. So many kids these days have no idea where their food comes from. I was watching a special on TV the other day by Jamie Oliver, "Food Revolution"...and he actually demonstrated that a whole classroom of 3rd graders couldn't identify pictures of various vegetables, but guess what? They could all identify Chicken McNuggets and french fries. Funny thing is, they couldn't identify an actual potato. I was floored. Needless to say, it was a huge wake-up call for the teacher, and by the end of the week all the kids could point out a head of broccoli, or an eggplant, etc. Getting kids back to nature, letting them get dirty and involved in the process of growing their own food is so important. It's been proven that kids are more likely to eat their vegetables if they have helped to grow them. The most important work you and I will ever do will be within the walls of our own homes.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Garden weather has been perfect so far ........... whoo hooo

Starting a new garden plot from scratch is a lot of work.

No wonder so many real estate listings brag on properties having an established garden area :-))

Everything I have planted so far is behind my neighbors gardens but one has to start somewhere.

It is a decent start at 40' x 45'

Next year will increase the size for raspberries, rhubarb, asparagus and gotta find room for elderberry bushes.

pic taken really early in the morning about 4 weeks ago

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Has been hot and humid - 90's and clear. Past few days a dark cloud crops up in the afternoons but little sprinkle out of it. This morning it felt like fall - crispy and clear nd breezy. It won't last but a nice break. Perhaps plants won't wilt this afternoon.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hey, Rosie...your weather is exactly like mine, except its been a long time since I've had a crisp morning! It was very humid when I walked outside this morning, like stepping into a sauna. I love those little afternoon thunder showers; I can hear one brewing up in the distance now.

Crawfordville, FL

Wow, Scooter...that's a nice plot.

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

Thank ya!

Crawfordville, FL

Sweet looking bunch, Sgt!

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

That photo would make a great painting Sgt! If you have a photoshop program you ought to try to 'paint' it up.

Honey - my kitchen garden is outside my screened porch too. The idea was to be able to grab a few herbs when cooking even if still in PJs (plus the sun is there all day) --what you did that I should have done was add the fence. Seems my kitchen garden is a great salad bar for the critters. I have 'replanted' the tomatoes so many times, I am thinking about growing them upside down. Darn deer pull them right out of the ground.

When in Ft. Laud recently - those afternoon showers made me wish I had an ark! 30 minutes of buckets and then the sun (and a rainbow once!!) came out.

Beaverton, OR

We have had heavy downpours of rain - the slugs are riding surfboards in the Pacific Northwest. Amazing crop of brocolli, sugar snap peas, pak choi. ( I think I feel a stir fry coming on).

It all looks so green and healthy and neat too!
Do you find that the straw works well for you to line the path?

Beaverton, OR

We were given the straw by someone who decided to give up on raising chickens(racoon killed the chickens they had raised from chicks). So we cut weed mat to match the "L" shape of our nested raised beds. Then distributed just one straw bale on top of the weed mat. Each year add 1/2 bale new straw. Now my pathways are weed free and it is a more peaceful garden retreat - I can forget about the weeds for a moment and notice the dragonflies and humingbirds.

What is weed mat? Is it another term for landscape fabric?

Sparta , TN(Zone 7a)

missingrosie,

It is a landscaping fabric that inhibits weeds from growing Lowes carries it (it is a heavy fabric).
Yes one can ask for landscape fabric and get the same thing as what a landscaper is quoting as weed mat.
