Plant propagation part XV based on my own experience

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

You wqnt to see something pathetic, read the posts on Daves Garden Forum and thank God we are here and not involved in that mess. Those people area going to be angry with each other for no reason other than they are getting involved in something that is none of their business. Maybe I am crazy, but I would rather laugh and have fun like we do here. It is so wrong to fight on the internet. I was involved in one of those type things one time and everyone ended up hating each other and the people who started it were still friends. Go figure. LOL
I jsut came back from a picnic and oh my God I am full. So much delicious food and drinks. (no booze) Most people there were EMTs who have to go on duty sometime tonight in one or two Townships. Lots of love and hugs to you all. Nite. JB

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Sharon, we rented movies and were watching one and waiting for the Indianapolis 500 to be done so we could watch the NASACAR race but I suddenly realized I needed to water some stuff so ran out fast to do it and found DH sleeping, so he said he would let the Tivo get further ahead so we don't have to watch all the stuff we don't care to see.

So I thought I would check in here and then go out front and water some and maybe spray weeds.

People can get nastier than they may in person, when on line. Not so fun to watch.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I love DVRs. We usually do not turn the TV on during the week until 4pm. DH does not know how to turn it off. At 4pm we put the TV on local news and then pause the TV. Then we take the dogs for their afternoon walk, get the mail, wave at the neighbors coming home and talk to who ever else is walking their dogs or children. We are two houses away from the upper entrance of the greenbelt so we have a great place to walk.

I am on the Board of the HOA and the liaison with the landscape crew so when walking I am always looking around for items that need to be addressed. I take a photo and transfer photo and message to crew foreman. My crew loves me because I am probably one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Not to proud of myself. I showed them how to cut back roses once. They watched, tried a few and then got it perfect. At that time I was singing to them telling them how great they were, my Senoritas. That always get a big smile out of my guys.

My DH loves, like I said, sports and prison shows. OMG, if I did not have my grandchildren and friend on Face book and my gardening friend on DG, I would be totally mad. I did read the explosive comments on the other thread.

They are ranting about something I think they do not understand. What IB said, and I read it very carefully because that was my job before I retired to read and understanding contracts. IB said they needed permission from News Media to estract that portion of the sales contract and disclose it to whomever. They could get sued by News Media if they disclosed the sales agreement without their permission. Now News Medias attorneys have to make sure that is OK. Anyway, it is helping the economy., Everyone in all these attorneys offices are making money working major overtime. I think that was in the first communication from IB Miguel or whatever is his name. It is actually funny to read if it was not your friends getting so upset.

Sorry, I wanted to stay out of it and I just wanted my gardening friend to know that.

I made Baby Back Ribs, Corn on the Cob, Mother's Famous Potato Salad and Deviled Eggs for DH, because he loves deviled eggs. When I got finished, cleaned up the kitchen, I had absolutely no appetite. Anyway, My Mother's Famous Potato Salad cannot taste the same without her home made sweet pickle relish. I have the recipe, I just have not made it. I have been out for two years.

Last year I did not make the potato or macaroni salad because of my depression but now I am back, I am roaring, and ready to make my wonderful salads that you only eat in the summer time. Now I have to get the ingredients and make the relish. A receipe from the 50s and you cannot not come close to it with store bought. I will share if anyone want it. It is very easy with a Cuisinart. My mother's grinder from Sears is in my pantry. Probably purchased in the late 40s. When we decided she needed to show us how to make the relish because she was declining, she brought down the grinder that she had used for over 50 years.

It was a family event. My brother and his wife and their daughter, myself, my DH and Mother. Our daughter Tracy was late. We had been putting the ingredients into this 50 year old grinder and it took 30 minutes to grind one large pepper or cucumber. Then Tracy came bouncing in to the house and said, "What are you doing"? "We are making grandma's sweet pickle relish". "Where is the Cuisinart?" I thought my 84 year old mother was going to have a heart attach. I said, it will not be the same.

My daughter Tracy continued to bring our my Cuisinart. I think I had only used twice and put the red pepper into the load, pulsed a few times and we had what we had been struggling with for 30 minutes with the grinder. Mother said, 'OK, I see that is faster, no problem". I can still see her grinding all that relish every year, with probably very dull blades. That was my mother's love. She gave each child 10 pint jars and each grandchild 5 jars. That was a lot of jars. Knowing what she was using, it took her weeks or months for those presents.

I know, Sharon, please quit laughing and go to bed and that is what I am going to do. Love you all.

Well, my friends, the Nascar race is just about over and I get to watch my Masterpiece Theater.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok, PLEASE are we done talking about IB and DG on this thread? there is another place for it so please not here. I am sick of it.

Sharon, I would love to have the recipe. For both the relish and the salads. Cute story about your grandma's grinding with that old grinder with dull blades. Oh to join the new generation.

Dawn, I used to watch the Indy 500 every year, but when all of the old drivers got too old to drive and became owners with new drivers I didn't know, decided I had enough. LOL, didn't want to join the new generation of Indy 500. I did used to like NASCAR too tho. Used to go to the races when they showed up on the west coast.

JB, when you wake up during the night take a TUMS. They really help. 'nite.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

If you have a Vodka, you will not wake up.

Jnette, got it. I just needed to unload. I am done,. I will send you the recipe with the plant. Wayside says zones 6 to 9.
Which would determine you need to put in a pot and protect in the winter. I do that with 4 differret plants. That is your choice. Let me know.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok, Thanks Sharon, I think I will pass on the bamboo then. I have too many plants that I have to move to the basement now and they come from the second story decks. I can't do it so my DH has to and we are both getting older. LOL, hate to admit it, but no, I had better not.

If you can, just send the recipe. Thanks.

Jeanette

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I remember Masterpiece Theater being an old radio program that I use to hear on Sunday Nights when I was a kid in the 70's, it was a mystery. My driver Jamie McMurray almost won the race.

I am watching the Bachelorette and reading this during commercials. Any of you watch that or So you Think You Can Dance?

Impressive Sharon. Quite a resume.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Never heard of your driver. And no, don't watch that.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Janette, you are funny, you type like you are irritated sometimes, though I don't think you are trying to come off that way.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Morning all.....take a moment to remember our men and women who have given their lives for this wonderful country of ours. Semper Fi to all you jarheads out there.

YES, I watch the Bachlorette and So you think you can dance. And, I would love to have the resish rescipe.

I must go turn on the irrigation hose for the veggie plants....this week is going to be a hot one.

Have a happy day and think happy thoughts. Hugs. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Dawn, I was just in a hurry. No, I have never seen either one of those. Guess we just watch different things.

And, were you talking about a driver, Jamie McMurray, in the current race? I thought you were talking about the race many years ago.

I think Masterpiece theater is still on isn't it? PBS?

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Yes Masterpiece Theater is on PBS just about every Sunday Night. Either Masterpiece Classic and Masterpiece Mystery. English theater that I just love. They make the olden days look so glamorous. I will get the recipe for the relish and D-Mail it. . My daughter actually called today and said she made potato salad and it was not the same with out my mother's her grandmother's relish. So the girls are out next week at the end of school so we are all going to get together and make a large batch.

I planted some Coleus today but still have many more to plant. Temperature today 97 humidity 6%, Thursday, 104. They may not make it. I am going to plant the majority in pots in the courtyard. Now I have to come up with an idea for the front area where they usually dominate.

I still have no stamina. I got about two hours in the garden today and then my body stopped on me.

My potato salad in the fridge is calling my name.

My DH made a killer pancake with chopped walnuts and then I had sliced strawberry, bananas and blueberries. Little whip cream and we were set for breakfast. Only problem it was 12 noon.

DH went to Doctor. He is 5'9" and with his shoes on he weights 141. He is starting to look like a different person. His facial expression has changed. I just noticed that yesterday.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon, you have lost me completely. I went way back to the beginning of the thread where you joined and could not find out what is wrong with your husband.

"DH went to Doctor. He is 5'9" and with his shoes on he weights 141. He is starting to look like a different person. His facial expression has changed. I just noticed that yesterday." (don't know how to put it in a box)

What does that mean, and what is wrong with him?

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well Jnette, he is a 77 year old man thinking he is 40. He was rushed to the hospital for kidney failure. He was having problems breathing and his blood pressure was all over the board. They did a blood test and urine test. He was totally dehydrated. He had been drink energy drinks more than lone a day to boost his energy. The more dehydrated he got, the more energy drinks he drank. The energy drinks are a diuretic. He was in the hospital being fed liquids intravenously for 3 days. Sorry for the confusion. If I do not kill him first, he may live.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, for heavens sakes, is he ok? When did he get out of the hospital? Just tell him a glass of orange juice when he feels weak helps a lot. But don't drink the whole conainer in a day.

That gives me a real energy boost. When I was working and one of my employees would get low in energy late in the day I would tell them to go down and have a drink of orange juice. It always seemed to help.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

What his problem is that he is 77 and wants to feel like he is 40. Cannot happen. He came home last week was home on day and then back min and now home 5 days.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Take a breath and a little space from him. Men are different creatures. Some times when they screw things up, they need to fix it alone. In this case you can not leave him alone to fix it, so just take a break and tell him you need one.

I am glad you have your family recipes and your daughter to enjoy some more care free times. I know for me, food can be a comfort, which is bad. I think it may be a little better than taking medication and drinking, so it seems a fare trade off to feel something good inside and not kill my liver and kidneys in one felt swoop.

Janette when do they forecast the weather to be warm enough to really see blooms and enjoy your garden?

JB did you see there is a 2 hour Bachelorette on again tonight. I only like a couple of her choices. Not too many good ones in my opinion. Looks like some drama to come. Do you know there is a thread for So You Think You Can Dance on DG, usually?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon, that is not unusual. We all want that. We all really hate to have the aches and pains, Drs, and hospitals. We want to get out and do all the things we used to do. PLUS, look like we did at that age. LOL

Well, if he gets to dislike the hospitals like I do he will take care of himself. Does he go to the dr? Maybe that's all he needs. A little psychology. Some attention?

One thing I have found is that they treat you different in the geriatric ward than they do in the orthopedic ward. WAY different. They, the nurses, have a much better attitude and are much nicer in the orthopedic. Maybe older people are crankier and want more attention.

All they are forecasting is rain. I may have told you, the weatherman said the other day that we have more rain in June than Sept. and Oct. put together. Now isn't that something to look forward to. My plants are waterlogged now. Some are rotting. Guess it's time to drag out the peroxide. Maybe tomorrow. Problem is I get soaked just doing that.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

That would just be so disheartening? The ground can hold just so much water. I hate the peroxide thing too, because it just adds to the moisture when it is really wet already but it is supposed to help. Never works for me, when they are rotting.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Helin,
I don't know why I watch the 'bachlorette because I get so annoyed when I see her liking on e of the men I do not like. LOL Anyhow, she sure likes to kiss those guys. I hope none of them have any disease or she sure will get it. I personally only see one of those guys that I would look at twice, and that is Roberto......guess because I had a Spanish Grandmother.
He is so cute and nice. I am glad that one creep is gone.....but the little whimp of a Weatherman, no matter how cute he is, he is a cry baby. Then there is the guy who has no job and wants to write screenplays.....what the hell does he have to offer a wife but a life of working? I am not sure why I am addicted to that show. Hmmmmmmm must be something I am lacking in my life. I hope not.
I also like Big Brother, Survivor and NCIS.
The weather here is so hot and humid now it is difficult to work outside at my age. I really have things to do, but I am not crazy enough to subject myself to a heat stroke or whatever. I drink lots and lots of water.
The sales on DG have picked up so much I am having a hard time keeping up with them.
I am out of a few things. This began about a month ago, may be April, and it has been consistant. I am pleased but getting tired. I want to begin a line of begonias and I need to propagate and have not had the time to cut.
Have a good day. I am off to feed the animals, walk the dog, go for groceries...just another day at the farm. Hugs.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I have to admit I get frustrated with some of those choices too. It is tv so my h and I think that some of those guys are plants that maybe they encourage the people to keep around for ratings. Glad the last few don't mess around if they don't like someone.

I like Roberto too. Some they don't show at all. I like the screen play guy ok, but I agree that he needs to grow up.
I think she will see the guy they all voted off as similar to her feelings toward Vienna and may keep him in the beginning.
I like Survivor and the Amazing race.

I can't propagate anything outside this time of year. Too hot here. I will try to layer but I still have a .001 % success rate for cuttings. grrr!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, really glad your sales are picking up. How about on ebay? Anything there? You said DG sales are getting better.

Sure could use some of your heat Dawn. We are lucky to get into the 60s for highs. Right now my tomatoes look pretty good so if it heats up, normally after the 4th of July, then maybe we will have some good tomatoes

The peroxide does help a lot. It is hard to water when they are waterlogged already but it does help.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

OMG, I went grocery shopping and got NJ tomatos and strawberries. $3.99 a lb for the greenhouse tomatoes and $3.50 a qt. for strawberries. I am in the wrong darn business. LOL.
My neighbor has a roadside stand and it is really a garden center, but they sell Jersey Fresh vegies. Their prices are not out of line but compared to Home Depot and those guys their plants are high. The quality is so much better. She just gave me her wholesale catalog to see if I wanted anything , like I have room for anything.
We are having some thunder and lightening just now. Raining sideways. I just irrigated yesterday because it was so dry, now it is raining. Crap. You can not outguess this weather.
I saw they opened the ski resorts in CA over the weekend. Wow, glad I am not there.
She has this big garden center, but just like us, she loves to try new things and I give her cuttings of my jasmine so she can try to propagate it. They must have 10 very large greenhouses. Must go, they just called for hail and severe lightening. Better get off this for now. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good afternoon:
Dawn you are correct about hot weather being difficult. its not impossible if you ca cool down th area with shade cloth and spary them 3 times a day should help them take hold.
well its too hot fo me but here is a pic of one of my dl's. Its been funny in that I am not sure who is crossed with whom. I need little tags or tape to write on. Oh well i am sur they will be nice plants.
I too am on the band wagon of not really careing about there dipute as its an attourney's matter not the members
pic is of the double rudbackia thats 30" tall if not more.
Nap 30 so I will be later on.

Hi, everyone! Did you all have a good weekend?

I wore my shoulders out weeding for most of the last two days, but I am almost done with the "Square Foot Gardens"...it has been slow-going as there were so many roots all tied up into the clay. The ones that are done have beautiful soil now without any "unseen tangles' beneath the soil. It must be years since we put those beds in and, no, we did not put weed barrier down, only hardware cloth on the bottom to keep the gophers out.

It was 60 degrees at 9:00AM already so I went out and watered. It was one of those nights that I could not sleep. Finally I got up and started reading...until 4:44AM. So I "slept in" until 8:45...yeah, I know not much sleep. My shoulders feel as if the want to fall off but at the same time they are tight as well, so I guess they won't fall off. I did get an appointment tomorrow with the chiroprator. I suppose I will have to plug in the A/C in my bedroom. The fan did not keep the room cool enough. (Always something, right?) And having the window open, well I am probably allergic to something out there as I was plugged up as well.

So I guess today will be springtime, as the next few days the temps will be going up even moreso. (From winter to summer!) You are right JB, there is no telling about the weather these days. First the 'maters were suffering due to the cold temps, wind and so much moisture, and now all of a sudden - sunburn! The one bed that was covered with a screen and had juice bottles for temp modulation did the best. And now the new ones that were planted yesterday look good as well. I sure hope we can get a few of those cool-season veggies before they bolt. I probably should put some row covers on them, with ventilation, of course...any other suggestions? (Peas, carrots, beets, lettuce, potatoes, broccoli...)

Jeanette ~ I have a question for you....how much peroxide in water do you use? Does the soil need to be dried out or almost in order for it to be effective? I was wrong again, about the weather as it started out warm and now it is cool, cloudy and breezy. I hardly know what to do from minute to minute. YIKES!

Dawn & JB ~ I like "The Bachelor" and "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance?" as well as "The Mentalist", though I have not watch any but the last one this season since so busy lately. (Sorry, don't like "Amazing Race", "Big Brother", "NCIS" or "Survivor"...)
I have lost a lot of seedlings, due to my getting ill and missed waterings. I have been bugging DH to set up the second light shelf - it seems to be ongoing as we got the fixture at least a month ago if not more. It is not your regular shoplight, as I could probably do that one myself, but one you need to put wiring in. He said he knew how to do it, and then now he says..."not sure..where is the box?" The box had no clear instructions as we are both intelligent people (I think...) and he has done a lot of wiring of many things, including a similar light fixture.

Sharon ~ Maybe that is my problem too...thinking that I should be able to do all that a forty-year-old can do, even though I am closer to 70 myself....GRRR...oh well, right? BTW, how is he doing?

avianut ~ How is your new baby doing? Shur is a purdy one!

JB ~ Your bird is gorgeous as well...

Dave ~ How are you and Kim doing now? Do you still need some thyme? Here is a picture is 'Pink Chintz'. It is lower growing than the seeds you got from ebay. It is slow growing but will fill in over time..☺...heh, heh. Also I will send you pictures of the others we discussed before. I am trying to wait until they are in bloom, as the PC is in bloom now, the cat thyme was in bloom for about 3 weeks, and the others not yet.

Janet and Plantmum6, are you there?

Well today has been interesting. Our Direct TV went out on the patio so we arranged for a replacement which the gentleman came and replaced. Then he started checking the other 4. Yes we have 5 TV on Direct TV with 4 DVRs. Now no booing. We do not eat out or go to movies or to the "strip"entertainment. I cook all of our food. TV and my laptop are our entertainment. He has one upstairs in his "man cave". I go to bed early and he sleeps late. He cannot watch TV in the Great room after i go to bed because I can hear it. If you guys listened real hard, you could probably hear it it is so loud. Anyway, I left to go visit the "Tomato Lady" who is suppose to be Las Vegas whiz gardener. Expert on day lilies and growing tomatoes. OMG, if she is a whiz I have a PHD. What a great disappointment. When i got home the Direct TV guy was gone and the main TV was searching for signal. "Honey", why is the TV not working? It is searching for signal. How long. About 2 hours. I told him it was not searching, it was not working. Then it was up to me to get on the phone and get it fixed. Well long story short, Direct TV on the way back to find lost signal.

I have a meeting tomorrow with the group that is going to help me with the greenhouse and the young man that owns it. He has granted me use of 1/2 for my help. Now that we are 100+ degrees, he is ready for my help. Oh well, September will be here soon and then beautiful warm/cool weather. I need to check DG to see if there is a greenhouse thread.

DH has been drinking his water/juices today and only has 4 8 oz glasses down and it is 5pm. needs at least 32 oz more. He is still weak and does not walk well but he is sleeping better. A small amount of normal snoring but none of the gasping for air like he was not going to live another moment. I was told that was sleep apnea, but I think his heart and lungs were in trouble due to the dehydration. Believe it or not, this started in Maui in August 2009. We were there 13 days. We thought he had had a minor stroke while climbing Mt. Hanna but it was dehydration. Thought it was a temporary thing but I guess not. By the time he got to the hospital last month he had to be put on oxygen, a heart monitor and his blood pressure going of the chart. All due to dehydration. Another thing you are not going to believe, he is deficient of Vitamin D. How can you have Vitamin D deficiency in Las Vegas? You stay indoors all the time. He has always been a pencil pusher, Engineer, and manual labor, of any kind, is nothing he will, even think about doing. About 25 years ago I stopped fighting that problem and just found me a great laborer/handyman. That made all the bad thoughts I had in my head every time I was doing something I thought was his job, go away. Maybe that is why we are married 36 years. That, and I only think bad, the words do not cross my lips.

There I go wandering off again on a tangent. Sorry. Have a great evening. Loving thoughts being sent your way.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

evelyn, I just put a glug (of peroxide) in my watering can which is probably a Canadian gallon. 5 qts? And no, I use it when the ground is very wet. The water deletes the oxygen. The peroxide puts oxygen back in it. Keeps the roots from rotting.

Love the Pink Chintz Thyme. I love all the Thymes.

Jeanette

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Jeanette, I just completed an all pink bed and I discovered pink thyme for the first time.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

We cross posted Sharon. Why do you think we would boo you for having 5 TV sets? You do not have to apologize or explain their function to anybody. My daughter has 5 TV sets. And they eat out a lot, go to movies when they want, etc. Nobodies business if you have 10.

What a shame that your husband has gone that long with dehydration!! I thought your son is a dr.??

A shortage of Vitamin D can cause a lot of things. I went to a dr. at our local clinic last year and he put me on 50,000 units a week of vitamin D for 4 months. He said my tank was real low. Now I take 2,000 units a day. But, you see so many people use the sun screens that block all the UV rays so a lot of people are short. Also, the dr. said that in the northern hemisphere most of the people are low on it because there is not enough of the right rays or whatever.

My DH mother had depression but wouldn't tell the dr. 'cause she didn't want to be put on prozak or meds so I told her to ask the dr. about vitamin D. She did and the dr. put her on the same dose the dr. had put me on and she saw an immediate change in how she felt.

So, you guys with all this bad weather etc. have your blood checked for vitamin D.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Whoops, we cross posted again. It is a slow grower. Mine is just now about 2 feet across and the same down and I have had it in for a few years now. What other plants do you have in your pink bed?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, were the hostas you sent me liners when you got them? OR?? Don't think so were they?

Jeanette

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

First, DH is the step-father my son, the doctor. Second, my DH is a menses, from Texas and a Texas Winter. If you are not all three, your opinion does not count. You just learn to live with it, ignore it and actually laugh about it. He is extremely smart but has no common sense. Enough said. He has actually apologized to the children, his and mine for his all smarter than everyone attitude. I do love him, but some days I do not like him. But with old age, we all mellow and he and I are both doing so.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I relate to that, my husband has some quirks in personality that can make you think he is the biggest Pr*ck on the earth and be a sweet appreciative and loving man, the next. I love him too but told him if he ever goes in a hospital when he is old and starts showing all his rudeness to the staff like his mom did in the end, I'll leave his butt there alone. I don't want him to represent me, when people are trying to help him. So I said he needs to smooth out those rough edges now.

He knows and says he prays about it, but we shall see.

I have not used grow lights or seen them since the old days when people used the plant poles. I sure wish they still made them. I should look on ebay.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Lowes has grow lights. Ones that fit in regular light sockets or lamps, I got some to fit in the thing you use when working on a car so you can see inside the engine. I was kludging what I needed for cuttings. They also have them for the hanging fixture that holds two lights. Can you see I know a whole lot about about light fixtures. Hope you got the idea.

I searched the aisle and could not find them and the manager went directly to where they were. On the bottom shelf of light bulbs. You can go to hydroponic shops but you will pay an bunch more. BUT, they do have great, updated hanging fixtures. Of course to grow "Weed" but I guess us real gardeners could use them. LOL. I have actually purchased some supplies because they have great ideas. I actually joked with the guy at the counter and ask him how often is the DEA parked out front. I have never seen so many Hispanic gardeners in my life. There should be no shortage of fresh vegetables in Las Vegas compared to all the supplies going out the door. And, they do have a back door. LOL.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Evelyn: I would love some mint Just tell me where to send postage and how much.
Sharon: what are you planning on growing in you 1/2 of the greenhouse? how big is it? what is the GH guy growing?
Jeanette: Most of the hostas should have been plugs unless I put in one of my odds and ends I have from last years hostas. can you Tell me the name and dmail me some pics so I can help you sort it out?
Sharon you are so right about those hydo shops. its flagrant in your face what they are using the stuff for and it aint tomatoes. I know if you look in the right spot on the web you can find seeds and If you really look hard I are willing to buy seedlings can be ordered also. If it was not for those growers how many DEA guys would be on unemployment? Its pretty gutsy to grow the stuff because the authorities look at water bills electric bills as well as inferred at night. I would not touch it with a 20ft pole. I like my freedom and don't agree with what it does to our youth and those that carried over from the past. hey dude gnarly eh
here is the double rudbeckia that finally bloomed for me. I guess I should put them in the trade forum. Not that energetic today. Nap 30 see you all a bit later
Dave

Thumbnail by Pughbear7
Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

They are one up on Dave. They, the hydroponic shops, have totally back indoor greenhouses and they, the DEA, cannot pick up the inferred. It is so obvious but I guess, oh I won't say it because it so totally political., I will shut up my mouth. LOL.

I just ordered a close out on a whole seller with left over hardy hibiscus. Not a great price but OK. They do very well here and no one seems to know about them. In the late summer I will grow green beans and things that do not grow here just for us to eat. I have not thought of anything else yet. You are an expert, do you have any ideas? We have a meeting today at 3pm in about 40 minutes. Meeting an expert on greenhouses in the desert. I will know more when I return. I think the green house is about 40' across and 120' long. It is on the edge of a golf course/office building complex his family owns.

I think I could grow the "weed" in my yard and no one would notice because there is not a square inch that is not planted. But I think from seeing the raids on TV. it gets quite tall. But I am with you, I like my freedom.

I have a new next of Robins. It was hilarious watching. Big Momma Robin, with a big belly was screaming at these four other Robins. They were in my silver diachondra and not getting it pulled fast enough to suit her purpose. Also the male Quail were here this morning to eat but no females. The females will show up in about two weeks with the babies in tow. This is absolutely my most favorite part of my back landscape and this time of year.. They do not even pay attention to the dogs anymore. Also had the first dragonfly this morning. Now we get to watch the dragonfly dance as the sun goes down because we back on the greenbelt and as the sun goes down, the little bugs go flying out of the grass and the hummers and dragonflies just have a feast. Later friends.

Thats Kool sharon. Do you have any bats in the area? I love seeing the dragonflies.
I will do some digging on sources for you. I had a great time growing them and pushing them to finish out fast. it was one of my favorite plants to grow. I used to use 8-10-10 from terra interprises who sell all kinds of nursery and plant supplies to the whole industry. I am guessing my one question is are you going to be doing this for quantity or unusual types, I know of both?
I have a couple of places to check with on tropicals out of south and central america that goes through customs in Miami. we used to get croton's, draceana, unrooted pothos and grape ivy cuttings, red (burgandy) rubber tree's, bananna's and a lot more. its just some of the standard stuff but its a good source for great prices, you just have to order in groups of 100.
so what is the guy growing in his half??? I know there are a few on here that will gladly help as I will also do if you need me. Just ask.
One question comes to mind do you want to rotate out you crops quickly or more into the designer (slow grow specialty plants). Do you see anything no available or being supplied poorly without any choice to speak of?
One trick is to allow you to expand your space is to do hanging baskets with the use of "s" hooks you can get a bunch of baskets going and basically double your space.
You will need to find out what or how much light you will need? Is there shade cloth on the GH?
as you can see sharon you hit one of my favorite things to chat about. I wish i had the space and a good sized GH. I would be like a kid in a candy store.
Personally I would do hanging baskets and unusual or hard to find colorful plants. Perrinials are a good thing to grow but its more an outside thing than a greenhouse crop. What are your favorite plants? what gives you that thrill in the garden? with the space you have you could do a small retail GH or just do wholesale and grow smaller things. I would lean towards the plants you like. more to follow, most likely friday as we have a graduation going on tomorrow. the oldest niece is graduating high school.
More tomorrow

Dave ~ How did you know that I had some mint? Is my address on Google? LOL!

Well, I guess you can see my messy garden as there are more weeds than anything else. Right now I am at the library doing updates and taking advantage of their high-speed wireless for the laptop. I have to do it the "old-fashioned way" for the desktop, tho'. When I go to town, I try to take care of many things as we live 20 miles away, and that was one of the things on my list.

Weeds grow here...but I do not grow "weed". ☺ There used to be a hydroponic shop in Placerville, but it is something else now. (I don't know the details, but I can guess...)

Well, the updates are about finished and it is about 6:30PM, so I must go now.

Happy gardening all,

Evelyn

Morning Glory, how are you all. You are no doubt still sleeping and I am up, ready to hit the deck and get stuff done before the temp hits 90 again today. I must mow grass in this crap today but if it is too humid, the grass will wait. I do not do high humidity too well.

Yesteday I went to transplant a philadendrum(sp) my daughter brought home from the Acme and when I opened the pot near the roots were little balls, which I thought were insect eggs. I am still not sure they were not, but my SIL said they were no doubt fertilizer balls. Have you heard of that. These were in clumps just like eggs. Hmmmmmm need to know if I threw out eggs or fertilizer. Any thoughts?
