Plant propagation part XV based on my own experience

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well Evelyn, now you are becoming one of us full fledged. Can't sleep more than 5 or 6 hours. LOL

Are you saying that is what you put on your plants when you are expecting freezing weather? Never thought of that. I used them for reflectors on my lights but not that. Good thinking if it works. Have you guys used them for that?

Dawn, you need to sit on the edge of the bed and rub your feet. Massage them before standing up. One of these days you will fall flat on your face because of that.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh great. I try to bend my toes and they are stiffer and bend less even when forced. My grandma had Arthritis, so I probably do too.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Not necessarily force them, just massage them. They will loosen up.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Dawn: be werry werry carfulll about the ailements I will be 47 this july and I have a list a mile long of what ails me. lately its trouble staying down when tiered. and then I fall asleep doing what ever it was I got up to do.... I can thank my grandpa for that one he falls out in the movies, dar driving watching tv sitting up at the table ...etc.... Hmmm I remember this old bumper sticker. I want to die in my sleep ... not screaming like the other people in his car ...lol. granpa turns 90 in jabuary. which means I get to enjoy all this untill I am verry old....
Its the quiet ones that get rowdy only part of the time that you have to worry about
Kims doing great. sunday she planted sod in the front yard with her son toteing the rolled sod in to the spot for her. she is back at work and a work horse as always. She is one of those that never shuts her brain off about work along with all the needy people in the house ... no wonder she went over the top. My hope is they find the problem causeing her to get the chest pain.
well I have loafed long enough today its time to get a move on. I think I over did it so its an easy day today. I got a new blue ray movie to watch so it will keep me busy. pic is space coast small talk

beautiful Dave.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh Dave we are almost the same age. I am your elder by 6 months, so you must listen to me and just take it easy, both you and the little woman.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Sorry the little woman has you by 6 years.... lol
but yes I do try to take it easy. I truely believe the plants are what keep us going. If I did not have them I would be wheel chair bound and not able to any of the stuff I find fun and entertaining. I get outside and get so wrapped up in what i am doing i forget all about the pain and then its only when its so bad that I end up inside and down for a day or more depending on how nuaghty I have been about not listening to the little voice in my head.
which brings up a whole new area. which voice do I listen too???? REDRUM ... REDRUM ....
anyhoo... it was a day of boxing for shipping. a good weeks of bidness ....
Tomorrow its away to scout out the college for the oldest niece.
so what is going on in everyones garden?, nursery planters, hanging baskets???? Its amazing how everyone just jumped up and said howdy. I have double rudbeckia's that are way tall 24 - 36" why did I plant so many seeds??? hmm seems I read that some where on here.
wednesday planting the 4 dl's I got friday. here is freaky tiki
Have a great evening
Dave

Another pretty one Dave. What is the double rudbeckia? Put a picture on of it. Which are they?

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Dave ~ Nice daylily!

It would look nice in my "Peach of a Garden" for my "Peach of a Husband"....LOL! ☺

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Lol Evelyn, Jeanette: I wish I had a pic of the bloom but its still too early They are like 3' tall and take a lot of water to keep them from wilting. They really should be in gallons. I got some cherry rudbeckia seedlings waiting their turn to get divided and planted into 3 1/2 pots. They are suposed to be shorter so maybe they will do better. My goal or peramiters are that everyone needs to fit in a box (less than14") for shipping and sell well. jury is still out on the c rudbeckia but i am thinking if they don't sell this year its compost time.
have a great evening everyone
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

On the ruds Dave, can't you just tuck them in somewhere in your landscape for color? Not the cherry brandys. LOL, am curious what you think of them. Or have you seen them?

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Dave ~ Which rudbeckias do you have?

It's the 'Space Coast Small Talk' that I like....(for the "Peach of a Garden")

The other one is pretty, too...

Ok, you want orange?? I planted this last summer...

Thumbnail by evelyn_inthegarden
Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

My only orange flowers are Campanulas and I forgot the other one, it is this. Oh I can't find the other picture.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Look at my Hollyhocks blooming, they are easily 8 feet tall and one is 9, easily seen since my cargo container is 8 feet and it is a foot taller.

Thumbnail by hellnzn11
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, you guys have flowers blooming!! It is going to be a month of more before it is warm enough for anything to bloom here.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Very pretty Dawn, I tried hollyhocks but the wind kept breaking them off. No matter how high or what I staked them with. Finally gave up.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

It would be odd for me to have such a short growing season, but honestly, when you guys have a paradise of color and green. I will be looking at dead plants all around the desert. Brown as far as the eye can see. In my yard, I will wait until late summer and early fall, when I will have a nice showing again, if I am lucky.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

That same lasagna garden had them there last year and one wind just mowed them over. I relate. so far the wind has blown them into the wall this year.

Many people have problems growing hollyhocks here too, but they are almost weeds here in my yard and all the cool stuff, I can not grow. UHG! never pleased.

What are these? Plant ID please? I have a ton of them and I don't know what I planted. I had so many seeds I just threw.

Thumbnail by hellnzn11
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

No Idea. Kind of pretty.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Oh Oh, here comes the rowdy ones. LOL, where is JB?

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Dawn, the blooms look a little like pincushion flowers, but the foliage is different... I hope someone else knows what they are- I really like them! Also love those hollyhocks!!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I am here but not for long. What a busy time. I have cuttings that need to go into the pots, seedlings that need to be planted. Weather is a mess.....cold, hot, very hot, windy, no rain, now that the veggie garden is planted no rain. I think I need a vacation. LOL
Did I tell you guys about the fragrant garden forum topic I started. If not, take a look at the sweet shrub topic. I finally found it after all these years of searching. Thanks to the internet and those great gals on fragrant gardening. I bought one of the plants and some seed from Hirt and we will see what happens.
Here is one for you............I had my ears checked yesterday to see if my hearing was going down hill. Well, after an hour of beeps, burps and whatevert else stupid sounds they could come up with, they found I need two hearing aids. Humpf. I hear what I want to hear. Anyhow, the price would be $5000 for the pair. Huh???????? Forget that,
Think how many plants that would buy. LOL
Did you see Cubits is closing down. I doubted if that would make it and I wondered how legal it was to do that since it is so much like DG.
I must go into town. I guess the Rowdys are still sleeping so I will check in later. Those are pretty little flowers, never saw them before I don't think.
Remember guys, if you want the black pussy willow, speak up so I can make a list. I have alot of cuttings just went into pots and they look good, but are tiny. they grow very fast so I need to start shipping the end of June. If it is not too hot.
This year was not a very good year for the Iris. The big old ugly beatles began eating the flowers before they even got open. I was so angry. They were so beautiful but the beatles just swearmed on them.
I am off. See you later.. I will return.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB11 Thought you couldn't hear me! LOL $5K? I was going to make an appointment today with one of those guys but now I guess I will save my money and my time. You just diagnosed me and I am fine even tho I can't hear. LOL

Rowdys huh!! LOL, I should be so lucky. I'm out here waving my hand like crazy. I thought a couple of the black PWs you sent me had rooted but they didn't. I want one!! I have gotta check in to that site. Sweet shrubs huh?

I just bought a beautiful Center Glow Nine Bark. It is so pretty. I put it in a container on my deck. Hope it lives thru the winter out there 'cause I don't plan on bringing it in the house.

I saw that about cubits. I wondered the same thing, but this was the second time it has been sold since Dave owned it. How many can that agreement be passed down to? i.e. that he won't go into competition?

So JB tell me about ticks. I thought April was the month for them. Now one of the DGers in Indiana says she had a bunch on her after working out in a friend's yard. I had to have one taken off of the base of my skull last year. It sure was sucking the old blood. Must have been watching those lab people that take 5 tubes every time they want to test for something.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

HUH! Cheeze, nothing is any fun anymore. I am sitting here writing to you when I should be scrubbing bird cages outside in this 90 deg. heat. It is just too hot for me. Wow.

There are several different kinds of ticks. If you look it up on the internet, you will see there are the small deer ticks, which are very plentyful here in NJ. When I had my birdfarm I used to take my morning walk in the woods with the dog, We would just love the smell and the animals, etc. but that dog got Rocky Mt. Spotted fever and died and I got Lymes. Don't talk ticks to me. There are the bigger ticks that we call dog ticks, they are bigger and easier to see. Some people say they too can carry all sorts of diseases.
They can even blow on you when the wind blows and you do not even have to be in the woods. Best thing to do is take off your clothing and check yourself very carefully when you come inside if you are in an area where there are ticks. I check my dog everyday just in case. There is no real season for them here. It depends on the weather mostly.

O.K. since you were unable to start a Black PW, I will send you more. Were the ones I sent you already rooted or were they just cuttings? I am sorrry I can not remember.
I will find a really well rooted baby for you and send it to you bareroot of course and we will see how that works. I want to wait a few weeks to be sure they are well rooted before I take them out of the soil. I will make a note for my self about the middle of June.

I heard that CVS has something that you can get for $20 that makes things louder and you can carry it around, etc. Sounds like something we should try before we go spending alot of cash on hearing aids. Also, I am not sure I would wear them all the time and, if you get them wet, which I can see me doing, they are no good. Crap, I hate getting old.

I will get back to you about the olive as soon as I look up what you are talking about. I am not sure, I will look at Logees. I must go do some cages now. Hugs. for now..

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

JB ~ I would love to have one of your PW's! Anything you would like? I am sorry you are getting no rain...I have more than enough to spare...it has been raining since yesterday, late morning and the ground is supersaturated (extremely muddy!)....it is pouring right now....

Jeanette ~ The ninebark should do well outside. I have the 'Diablo'. In times past I thought it died or something...but it was just late to leaf out. I cut it back severely every year. Well, I suppose my zone isn't exactly your zone, so I shouldn't say anything about hardieness....What does 'Center Glow' look like?

Dawn ~ Did you find out what that flower is? Yes it does look like a pincushion, but the color?? Also, I have never hear of an orange campanula, only pink, purple and white...what variety is it and can you post a picture of it?

My white lilacs are in bloom...I took this picture on Sunday, after the snow melted....

Thumbnail by evelyn_inthegarden
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, no, you sent me cuttings, no roots. The white ones rooted but not the black. And they both were so beautiful. The white were the biggest puffiest I have ever seen. And I had never seen black before so they were amazing. Gorgeous red on black.

OK, I found my Logee's catalog. It is Osmanthus fragrans 'Fudingzhu'. Here is what Logee's say about it:
Fudingzhu' translates to "pearls on Buddha's head." The heady fragrance and magnitude of flower clusters will make 'Fudingzhu' one of your favorite plants. This variety reaches flowering size when only 6" tall and flowers from September to April.

I don't know why it seems to be an east coast plant. I have found other olives out here, but not these.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hmmmm ticks... hate em had rocky mountain spotted fever once and now everytime I get the flu with the heaves I end up horrid looking for days. Its my understanding lyme's disease is even worse. I had a friend who had it and had to stay out of the sun.
we get them year round unless we get a cold enough winter to killem all dead bye bye .... fall down go boom
Its best to check yourself carefully especially in your hair. they like to hide there. my step son had one a month ago and he had to put a cigarette upto it so it would back out and let go. they say its really important not to leave the head in.
had a storm roll in from the east of all directions. i was playing outside and then I heard a crack of lightning. no wonder I am moving slow and the pain meds don't seem to be helping. oh well time to get horizontsl for the duration. hope to be back on ing the am.
I agree looks like a pin cusion .. I will try to dig some to see... do you have enough for everyone to share???
Don't know why im feeling like a little kid at the moment. hmmmm nap time
Have a great evening
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

O.K. Dave, you lost me. What are you going to dig? Are you asking me if I have enough for everyone to share? If you are talking about the Black PW, it will depend on how the new cuttings grow. I will make a list of who wants them and then go from there. I can start them year round and they grow fast. No problem.
Wow, the"Sweet olive" sounds really nice. I love Logees and they will make good anything they sell if it does not arrive in good shape. I would love to get one of those but I am just running out of space.
Must eat dinner and get some rest. I cleaned bird cages in that 90 deg. heat today and after my shower I felt like I was ready to sit down. just checking in to say Good Night.
Hugs to all. JB

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Hailstorm here, too. From about 2:00PM to 3:30PM, then it moved on...then about 30 minutes of sunshine, just so we could remember what a sunny day would look like...oh it is SO muddy out there...I'm afraid to go out there right now...I don't want to slip in the mud!

Anyone like anemones??

Thumbnail by evelyn_inthegarden
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, I found a site that I think has a better deal. Logees was a total of $25 for a 2 1/2" pot. that is with shipping of $9+. I found a place that sells gallon size, she said around 20 inches tall, and bushy for $21+ with free shipping. I think that includes shipping. I sent her an email to confirm.

I am thinking I might order one for each, myself and my daughter.

Well Rowdys, it sounds like the old folks have collapsed on us. LOL Now we can talk about them.

Before I forget it, Ibartoo, Linda, did that Blue Sky flower I sent you live? I sure hope so. I lost mine right after I sent it to you.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

evelyn, that looks like a poppy. I think we cross posted. I have never had any anemones. Actually, I don't remember ever seeing any. Very pretty.

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

JB, I'd love a black pussy willow- happy to buy it from you, though- why don't you post a few in the Marketplace?

American Canyon, CA(Zone 9a)

JB, I am new here but I would love to get some of the black pussy willow cuttings too, if you have enough. I would also be happy to pay you, it costs money to ship things! We never seem to get pussywillows here at the nursery I work at, except the grafted weeping ones.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, from the sounds of the modeling company, it sounds like they are in bigger trouble than with Dave. Sounds like their stock has gone into the toilet. We'll see if they pull this.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Evelyn what is that Trifolium repens 'Atropurpurea'?? Is ist a ground cover? Looks low. Very pretty. Do you know how hardy it is?

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hello Plantmum6, Welcome, we are a really nice group of people. We hav e a few Rowdy ones, but then doesn't every list. I consider myself the oldest and the rowdyest of the group. But I am really a sweet old lady who loves people and plants.

Having said that, I ship bareroot to west of the Mississippi because that is what is required by the State of New Jersey and some of the Western States. I ship only on Mondays and Tuesdays and reserve the right to change dates if the weather is too cold or too warm.

I will put the Black Pussy Willow up on MarketPlace but I like to give my friends I hang out with here first grabs because once I put them on Ebay and MarketPlace, the pickens get slim.

Bareroot shipping is a bit cheaper to ship, so we will see how many people from this list want them and I will go from there. I do not charge my friends unless I am having a bad month. LOL.

I will not be shipping these until at least another two weeks or more. Some of the cuttings were just transplanted into larger pots and I do not want to take them out now for bareroot shipping. Stressing them out at this time could be a problem. So. we will just wait and when I think they can handle giving up their pots, I will let you know and get your mailing addresses. This goes for anyone on this list. I do not ship to Canada or Overseas because it requires an additional inspection of the greenhouse each time I do it and that gets too costly. I have a friend in Canada I would love to ship things to but I can not.due to the extra charges. Since I am a certified Nursery I must comply with the State rules. Blah Blah,,,,,,but that is the way is is! Must go mow grass. Hugs. JB

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

There is a boycott started from noon Pacific Daylight Time, which is 2 hours from now. If you want to participate in it, do not make any posts today, from noon on.

I will be doing my part. It will be up to you to show your loyalty to Dave, as IB is suing him for one million dollars! Big mistake, IB! Big mistake....

Many members are not renewing their membership. I will wait and see what they do and give them a chance to make it right with us members.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Plantmum6, what she is really saying is that if she weren't so old she would stay up and be rowdy with us on the west coast. But she likes to work in the light of day instead of sleep and then have to mow grass at night.

That's ok, we love her just the same and besides, we can talk about her and she can't defend herself. LOL All in good fun and keeps people on their toes and off mine.
