I can't wait to see the heliopsis 'Lorainne Sunshine'... looks like a nice one

Allison: When your coleus roots were so long, what did you do when you transplanted them?
Did they do well that year?
I have direct sown poppies sprouting Venus,Drop Dead Georgeous.Sown in November.

just put them all in the container... spread out a bit.. little bit of root... little bit of mix... and repeat ...and they did just fine.. most of my KK were like that last year in that side planted basket

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the info. So many plants dont like root disturbance.
Your KK's are testement to survival.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes I would say so... a bunch of the NC Farms cuttings from last year were like that... and they were not like water roots... which is what I was worried about... the little plug trays and roots just keep coming out of the little hole... some were tangled underneath.. but I was just careful pulling them out

I have never done plugs but isnt a "TRUE" plug tray is where the roots cant get out?

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Love the cuttings and seedlings. I have been busy too with starting seeds. I decided to post some pics instead of just enjoying all of your's.
1. My entire growing setup in the basement - wish I had a greenhouse, but then again I don't have to worry about temp, just lack of space!!

2. Black-eyed Susan Vine
I have cut them back several times as they have been growing into each other and onto the wire shelving. I made craft stick trellises to try and keep them from growing into each other.

Great job everyone. Things are looking GOOD!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

HOLICOW grammyphoebe. Looks FABBY! Where did you get your seed for your bronze carex? (droooooool)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nice seed-babies everyone.
I usually think of Allison as the "Seed Queen" but I can see lots of us could hold court here on DG! LOL
Wow Eleanor! Now I know where you've been hiding!! Beautiful babies you got there!! Are you vie-ing for Allison's QUEEN title? Hee hee he

I have some nice Peppers coming along...other stuff too but the peppers are doing the best. Sorry, no pictures yet.

Thomaston, CT

I'm amazed by all those seedlings! And they have to be planted out! I bought seeds to direct sow in the garden...guess I'm bone lazy.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks! Allison will always be the "Seed Queen"!! I'm just trying to save a few bucks. I can easily spend over $500 on annuals for my containers. This gives me a chance to start playing in the dirt in February and gardening is my stress release!! The bronze carex came from Hazzard's Seeds. They usually sell in large quanities for growers but some of the seeds are sold in smaller packets. If I can't find seeds I always check Hazzards. The pic is last year's Spanish Eyes BESV that i also started from seeds. I can't wait to start planting the annuals outside. Eleanor

I like the varity of seedlings. Speaking of I have to go check in on. Dont want to go out. :-/

ADD got my attention. I am getting ready to drop this Colocasia in some dirt. Its 4 years old now.

WOWSER! Now that's a bulbous thing! OMG Hazzard's seeds has many luvly, luvly things. I wonder where I might put 500 grasses? I am SO shopping. Thanks grammyphoebe.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL... you guys are too much... seed queen.. sheesh

Eleanor what a great setup you have... and your babies look great!!!!

have my first :::sniff sniff::: bloom today!!! supposed to be Petunia Dolcissima Flambe Salmon http://summerhillseeds.com/petunia-dolcissima-flambe-salmon-p-137.html?cPath=21

doesn't really look like that though... wonder if the inside color is different OR one of those little buggers fell in the wrong spot.. but I love it anyway!!

How prettiful! Some seeds seem to do the pot hopping trick ALOT. I guess when you're just laying there waiting to germinate you have to do something to keep yourself amused. I have a couple of california poppies pretending to be lobelia this year. I don't have the heart to tell them they SO don't look like lobelia.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I am experimenting with perennials in containers, hopefully to save on the $ spent for annuals each year. So far have had luck with obedient plant, BES, jacobs ladder, ostrich fern, and gooseneck loosestrife. Some of them (all?) I just dug out of the garden and potted not sure what to do with them and there they sat for the winter...

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That is a great idea debilu.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have a few perennials in containers Deb... willow salix for 4 years now... 2 pee gee hydrangeas for 3 years (still small)... pink turtle head (grown from seed) for 4 years (snuck in some strawberries in that one)... lavender & yarrow for 2 years.. and 2 kinds of mint 2 years.. doing another willow salix that we picked up in tree form this year

KENNESAW, GA(Zone 7b)

This is my seed starting setup. I have oodles of tomatoes & peppers. I have already set out broccoli, chard, spinach lettus and various Herbs. I have these in squarefoot boxes with hoops covered with row covers. I have snow peas just comming up. I plan to use the box & hoop setup to harden off my vegs. I envy you all with greenhouses. I use the boxes because I have 100 yr old maples in the front & back of my home and must hunt for sun. After the horrible year we had in Buffalo I am trying to get a ear;ly start.

This is how I have been starting marigolds since 1972. I have about 100 babies in these 3 boxes. When the seeds germinate I will remove the plastic wrap. When they have the first true leaves I will thin them and transplant the extras in other boxes to put in front of my 7 vegi boxes strewen about my yard. I also start cosmos this wayThose of us who don't have greenhouses learn to improvise.

nice stuff!!!... even with the greenhouse... I will take winter sowing seeds over all of it!!.. can't imagine doing 100 seeds of anything... good for you!!!

KENNESAW, GA(Zone 7b)

It kind of got out of hand:) I give extra plants away and give extra produce to a local foodbank.
