Lookin for my Slug Thread friends..!

If the weeds and a nasty infestation of blackberry vine keep up I won't have a yard....I will have a smoking propane weed torch...GRIN

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Careful there Moon...LOL
I found two baby maters and a baby green pepper today. The corn in the field behind my house is already hip high (if ya stand about 5'3"). Forget knee high by the fourth of July...this year.

Dahlonega, GA

Here too Moon , I have to lift them with a spading fork and pull the roots out , sometimes 8 ft long with another five or six plants growing off them .

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Grin....ya know me JJ...click...WHOOSH...job done...LOL

Yup, Digger...and it doesn't make it any easier that they can fight back....grrrr

Dahlonega, GA

That's why God invented leather gloves !

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

And He was most wise....grin But leather gloves don't cover all of you....grin The vines have a way of moving where ya don't expect them....Yeowie...

I set concrete wire cages in the beds before I plant. Then I wrap them with 6 mil visqueen 18 inchs high. If frost is predicted, I wad up news paper and put it around the tomatoes and pile some on to top. It works really good. Of course a few nights of 20 degree weather would do me in but that is usually not a problem. I had 20 I set out in Feb. and I have 2 I planted in April. They are just now coming in. I planted 9 a week ago just to get a jump on fall tomatoes. If I can get a good root system in the ground before the high heat hits, I think I can keep them alive until the weather breaks in Sept. So far our temps have only got to the low 90's. Last year we hit 100 the first day of June and and stayed above a hundred until the first of Sept.

gramma, the farmers in our area are getting their combines ready to start cutting corn. A lot of it will be ready by the middle of July.

Sounds like you have it covered , Jim . And do you ever hunt arrow points ?
If everything keeps on like they are , I'll have enough toms to get my fill this year .

Delhi, LA

I used to find arrow heads all the time when I was farming but don't have much time to look any more.

Dahlonega, GA

I always wanted to walk the fields around there . The most I've done , is tag along and dig for them in central Tex . A lot of work , they are in burn mittins and usually 1 -3 foot deep
I'm not getting many slugs this year . Thought with such a wet spring , I would find a lot crawling up the foundation . Any one else notice this ?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I haven't seen a single slug thus far, Sally...but I do have a large healthy population of Toads and tadpoles. Maybe we are finally winning the slime battle...grin

Dahlonega, GA

I need more toads . Had some long green frogs a few years ago , but they moved on . Wish I had them back .

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

We try to provide habitat for them and the tree frogs and lizards...we have a small pond that fairly boils with activity at night. Additionally they have lots of greenery to hide from predators

Dahlonega, GA

Three dogs and a cat don't help . I have all the other , even if my pond is a frog wading pool

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I hear ya on the animals. I have 3 cats and 2 dogs...they pretty much leave the birds, frogs, lizards and toads alone...more fun to chase the moles and squirrels I guess.

Dahlonega, GA

Lizards and squirrels don't have a chance .
