It's for a steep slope that is in danger of completely eroding away so I needed something evergreen. Most of the order is vinca (1000). I have vinca already planted on part of the slope and I really like it. The phlox is going to spill over the stone walls above the slope. As for the juniper, I don't know what I'm doing with it yet. (I personally don't really care for juniper at all but DH really wanted it so I got 12 small plants.)
What have you ordered 2010 #6
I like vinca as well, and use it a lot. Phlox is pretty, but too 'weed-permissive' for me to consider it as a groundcover. Not a juniper fan either.
mulch under the plox helps with the weeds Victor ... the sections I can lift I always put some under it... and preem all of it!!!
I don't really think of the phlox as being a groundcover so much as a nice splash of spring color along the walls. That being said, I am not 100% certain it will get enough sun to be as vibrant as I hope. We shall see. My biggest dilemma is what to do with the very mature, large patch of pachysandra that is planted on part of the slope. I'd love to rip it out and replace with the vinca, but that's a helluva lotta work!
been there... done that... and STILL doing it 6 years later
one of the plants I can say I HATE!!! ... might be the only one so far!!!
I don't like it either.
I don't quite hate it, but I like vinca MUCH better. I think it might look stupid having mostly vinca and then one patch of pachysandra in the middle. It's about 25 feet long and 6 feet tall so it would not be an easy task to remove!
ours was bigger than that... well the length anyway... the bed completely wrapped around 1/2 my house & property... but different widths the whole way... was a real mess.. Ditch Lilies and PI growing in it.. and a ton of weeds to boot... but good news is when they had the equipment here for the retaining wall I had them scrape 1/2 of it... I bagged ALL OF IT... told them just to make a pile over here... and it still pops up here and there... most of the time it's trapped between big rocks under ground... and if I see a piece it instantly ticks me off.... but there were 2 other beds we removed it ourselves... the neighbors patch that keeps jumping over to my place .. I asked him if I can push it back and plant something nice there.. and he loved the idea.. just another thing on my list
if you have an hour you can look though my photos.. LOL

Yep, that looks familiar! I know I'll never be happy unless I rip it out, but I'd have to do it manually. There are stone wall terraces above it that would not fare well if I came at it with a backhoe.
Herbicide??
I try to avoid that (though not religiously) - there's a lake about 100 feet from this pachysandra patch. But do you think it would work?
have no idea. Never had pachy. I don't like chemicals in general, but will use them if necessary. I tend to go up the ladder in toxicity.
It's pretty feisty stuff. I think it would need something pretty toxic to get rid of it.
Napalm?
Dunno. I have very little experience with chemicals. Maybe I'll check it out. But wouldn't I have to wait a while before it's safe to plant there again? The vinca's bare root so I'd like to plant it as soon as possible.
most likely... I tried to spay some even with PI killer & ground clear... no good
Hee hee! I was joking. Napalm was a nasty defoliant used during the Vietnam war. Just googled and did see an article on using RoundUp on it. Yes, you would have to wait awhile.
Really?! Wow. Brush-B-Gone is what I use on PI.
LOL, okay I feel stupid. Should've known you were being funny... :)

No need to. It shows you're young!
Thanks! I turn a year older tomorrow so I needed to hear that!
Happy Birthday!
I'm really glad we opted for vinca instead of pachy in our evergreens area. It's much easier to control and remove. That was so long ago and one of the first areas we planted it was probably a money thing: free dig it yourself vinca, or buy pachysandra.LOL Ric
Napalm-a thickener consisting of a mixture of aluminum soaps used in jelling gasoline (as for incendiary bombs).

Thank you. It's time to stop celebrating them though. Probably the last year I can just barely get away with saying I'm in my mid-thirties!
SongsofJoy. Happy birthday. Enjoy your day of planting those zillion vinca. If you need more vinca, come and take as much as you want from our Vt. house in Williamsville. We have tons along the Brook. Here is a photo of Nell in the Vinca along the Baker Brook in front of our barn.
Wha, you can not have those rocks they are the stairs down from the barn to the brook.

My review
I ordered a wonderful sounding selection from Geraniaceae on Feb 10 2010 and they arrived yesterday. I was delighted with the eight big, healthy and incredible well packaged plants that I received. They were all wrapped in damp moss and then encased in damp newspaper. These beautiful Geraniums never knew they had gone from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. A Great source. My husband promptly took the moss and planted it along our endless stream and falls. Thanks for the moss bonus and DG discount! Patti
Wha, good idea!
can you write my review:)
Just say, "Ditto" as you agree with me completely! Patti
LOL
HOLICOW nice website
Songs Happy birthday tomorrow I don't even remember much of my 30s, it was a long way back.
Well, for my birthday I took myself to my favorite local garden center and came home with:
2 'Golden Temple of Narra' Tree Peony
1 'Floral Rivalry' Tree Peony
1 'Baily compact' American Cranberry (dwarf viburnum)
3 PJM Rhodies with great fall, winter and spring foliage color
3 white siberian irises (too lazy to go lookup name right now)
'Red Fairy Wings' Epimedium
And came home to a pile of boxes filled with vinca. So now I really must start planting!

Lots of nice geraniums you guys. Good source for them too.
Songs looks like a great trip to the nursery for your birthday. Nice bunch of goodies you selected.
Waiting on two shipments here today or tomorrow. High Country Gardens (first order from them) and Garden Crossings.
Dahlianut - I received Red Roulette and Lavender Lace -- still have Sugar Plum and Apricot Prince to come.
Victor - Agent Orange was the herbicide used in Vietnam -- Napalm is the jelly-like inflamatory agent used to set the dead plant life on fire. I've seen the stuff burn on water. I do suppose one could use it as a herbicide.
Received 2nd shipment from Roots & Rhizomes today. Dianthus Heart Attack, Dianthus Sangria Splash, Red Beauty Fern, Ursula's Red Fern, Japanese Painted Fern, Nepeta Sweet Dreams and Sanguisorba Obtusa (like some people I know)lol.
soj which nursery is that??
planted the two shipments from yesterday and the bluestone order arrived - small and healthy - actually the asters are really small - think i will did up some shots that my purple domes are giving off and pot them up, they are just as big or bigger. one more order to be delivered today and maybe two - waiting on topiary gardens and greers all conifers pretty much.
Uncanoonuc Mountain Perennials in Goffstown, NH (it's in the middle of nowhere but a nice drive). Ever been? They have nice display gardens to stroll through and all the perennials are field grown and potted up on the property each spring. Not many trees. Probably more accurate to say it's ONE of my favorites, but I do go a couple times each year and never leave empty handed.
