Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Got my caladiums too. Now what?!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes Celeste I judged a book by it's cover.... my caladiums are here too... Victor you can either pot them up inside... or wait for the ground to warm up and then plant them... that's what I did last year

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Pretty rose Pixie. Congrats to your DH for making a nice choice. Also I will be waiting to see those new DL babies blooming. Sound like nice sized plants.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Victor you can give your caladiums a head start inside if you want. Just pot them up in a flat and keep them warm and moist, not too wet. I am going to keep mine on my south facing windowsill. If not wait until it's stays above at least 50 if not 60 at night to plant them outside....they love the heat. I didn't see some of mine last year until the end of June beginning of July. They will rot if planted too early and it's rainy and cool.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

think I like putting them in a flat & picking them out later... thanks Ronnie!!... well if I can find the room.. LOL

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I have no room left either!! Gotta get Brinda's coleus done today maybe the caladiums tonight...have to make a trip to Sam's club later and oh my they may have some begonias left...no I won't look...no..no....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know the feeling Ronnie... a few years ago I made newspaper pots for the cladiums ... held together with masking tape.. just planted the whole thing in the ground later... if I feel motivated maybe I will do that again

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Wow Pixie you are going to be in the fruit! And I have been thinking about trying Arizona, it looks very pretty, please let me know how it does for you. :)
Onewish Love the Cannas! :)

I have been trying real hard not to order anything but gave in to placing a minimum order at Bluestones.
I couldn't resist two of the Salmon shade Dianthus they were offering.
DIANTHUS Old Spice - Short 12" zone 3-8 Plant 10" apart. An old favorite. Once the most popular Dianthus - we were able to find stock to again carry this extra clove scented, salmon pink beauty. Evergreen

DIANTHUS Helen - Perpetual Flowering Pinks - Short - Plant 10" apart. Fragrant salmon pink flowers.

I had wante dthis one too, but they sold out. http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/DIDOS.html

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I always waited in the past, but it would be nice to get them going. They do grow slowly when put outside. How deep a flat??

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the tubers?? are pretty big don't think a standard flat would cover them... do you have any foil roasting pans Victor?... I would think just enough to cover them would work

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Yes Victor, like Allison said just cover them. Dollar store foil pans are a must have in my house!
My neighbor uses the plastic shoe boxes and fill about half way with potting soil.

Made the trip to Sam's and was real good...didn't buy any more begonias...only because they were out of them!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. I'll get some.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh my it is so hard to resist isn't it. I was lost in mid winter so if you held out this long big kudos for willpower to you meredith. Also think your picks are very nice and I am sure you will be glade to have them blooming in the garden.

Good luck with the tubers Victor, I'm sure they will be fine until it is time to plant them out just covered with soil to get them started.

From the found treasure file: I just got some iris planted in the new garden extension. Stuck them in between the showers and sun we are having. They were from some nasty rhizomes that I discarded last spring after all the rain and slugs had done a job on them. Tossed them in a ditch and never thought much more of them until this am. Took a quick stroll and spied some odd leaves coming up through the rubble and weeds. Sure enough they were baby iris. Must have been a little rhizome that wasn't total mush that I missed and it began to grow again. Scooped them out and replanted. I just love it when plants are tougher than you think.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

That's awesome!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

very cool!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I was wondering what I should do with the caladiums also.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Ok...my ordering, considering what I've got in the past, is a smidge on the light side this year.

From the guys at Naylor Creek (my favorite hosta place) I ordered 'Yellow Polka Dot Bikini' and 'Pistache.'

I have several DL's coming in, all were from the Lily Auction. Can't remember all of the varieties, but I believer there are about a dozen, give or take.

Since I needed to scale back, financially, and that I am slowly running out of room, I've gone "old school." lol

I ripped out a 'Wine and Roses' wigela (the thing was not performing and I was sick of looking at it, and I replaced it with a red flowering, variegated Azalea. I ordered, I believe it was 2-3 years ago a White mini/dwarf cedar 'Knootkenensis,' I believe Victor ordered it from a different grower than I did, the poor thing was just wasting away, not really doing a blasted thing. Then I read up on it and found out that placing in full on sun was a sure death, do to scorching of the needles. So I replaced it with a yellow needled, dwarf Hemlock, potted it up and will see what happens from there.

I picked up a potted Jap. Iris 'Lion King,' from a local nursery, I hope it thrives the thing is growing in a 3 gallon pot! I picked up 3 peonies from the Christmas Tree store, all are older varieties: Mons Jules Elie, Rachel, and Felix Crousse. I also picked up 3 more peonies from Home Depot, Lowes or Wal Mart (can't remember where): Bowl of Beauty, Shirley Temple, and Festiva Maxima. I also picked up a new ITOH peony, it was 50% off, can't remember the variety, but it is supposed to have purple/lavender flowers...it was $15...so I am not complaining at all.

I also picked up some Siberian Iris, I've never grown them before: Dear Delight and Shaker's Prayer.

I'm trying to plant some ground covers in my hosta beds, so I picked up 2-8 packs of Sedum 'ogon.'

I'm going to try the hay bale veggie garden this year, so I picked up 4 bales of straw, and 6 bags of compost. I also got 3 varieties of seed potatoes, and will pick up a 3 pack of sweet peppers and a 3 pack of tomatoes when the weather gets a smidge warmer out there. I'll be planting another hay bale garden in 2 weeks for beans, and zuchini.

I also picked up 2-1gallon potted winterbury. They were $6.95 each at Lowe's, and I will be planting them where I have that monster white bleeding heart (that I can't kill)...so for now, that's it...lol

I was out all day today setting up the hay bale garden, planting the potted up plants, and some of the boxed peonies that I purchased. When the weather gets a bit warmer I'll be planting the dahlias, EE's and Canna outside as well...they are going in their own bed.

Happy gardening everyone!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

busy busy busy Thom

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Our caladiums came this weekend also. We pot quite a few and set them on the south facing brick patio which gives them a jump start.
Victor, Pepsi cases and newspaper make a great starter flat in a pinch, not too large to be heavy, and sturdy enough to move around. Ric

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Ric.

Wow - doesn't look real light to me, Thom!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yeah, Thom...scaled back??? I don't think so.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Considering that last year I ordered and planted about 40 different hosta varieties, and about 75 DL's, and then the year before that did the 10yds of topsoil, and all of the tree/shrub orders...it is scaled back...still going to be busy.

I may be getting rid of/editing some DL varieties this year. IMO if a DL doesn't put out atleast an additional fan every year, it's not worth keeping. I like DL's in clumps, not as single specimens. There are a few of them out in the beds, taking up major garden real estate that will be removed. Some of the DL's that were given as "bonuses" are doing better than the actual DL's that were purchased!

I purchased 3 different varieties of Hellebore. All in the painted series...one bit the dust, so not sure if I'm going to replace it, or plant something else in its spot.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that is still a pretty good bunch of stuff to plant thom!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Looks like Thom will be busy with lots of new goodies. Sounds nice.
Mulch being delivered today, hope to get it spread about in the next week or so, at least most of it. Lots of weeds to get rid of too.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

finished planting everything...lol

now I just have to wait until my next pay so I can get the other 4 straw bales, and 6 bags of compost. Then I will more than likely plant out the tomatoes/peppers, and the other potatoes and onion starts! I'm really excited about trying this "new" way of veggie gardening.

Lots of weeds here as well...although since everything is finally starting to fill in, and everything is coming into their own, there are less weeds, but I still see them. Our Pug, Iris, is making quick work of all of the dandelions though...little bugger, I'll I hear is her snorting while she scarfs them down...it's funny! I think she may be part goat.

A pug goat is a good choice for a dog :-). Speaking of dogs I am surpised you did not hear me yelling at the top of my lungs when the "puppy" jumped on my GH chasing a water droplet. Yes - he has toenails...........

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Received my Bluestone order, looks pretty good.
I think I may need more sedum...but then again it spreads real easy...hmmmmm

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Buds on all of my peonies: herbaceous, tree, and ITOH.. and on the news tonight, yep, you guessed it, FROST warning...

I won't say here what I was saying at home...lol.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes here too

Quote from Seandor :
I just figured out that I have 100 + gladiola bulbs coming - what was I thinking of?

Brilliant of course ^_^

Ok I'm going on a garden centre shopping tour of remote nurseries and garden centres in the province on a bus with 40 other exerberant gardeners. I have a verrrrrry long list but you have to fit what you buy into a container that fits under the bus. So what is the biggest container that you can get that fits under a bus Rubbermaid? Tupperware? I've been eyeing up some hard plastic ones but they look breakable. Ideas please and thanks.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

What an awesome idea! Is it an overnight thing where you will have suitcases also? Maybe a steamer trunk would be apporpriate. Is it a big motorcoach? Maybe you will have extra room in the empty seats, or maybe you will have to rent a trailer to pull behind your bus. I can hear everybody sininging now. Oh, the wheels on the bus go round and round.......etc.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

find out what bus company it is.. they might have those details listed on a website

Tree's came today, while I was having testing done~!
DH had almost all planted by the time I got home. Nice roots on these tree's, very happy with my order!!! I'll try to get a picture of one tomorrow before he plants the rest.
Oh, bought them from Stark Bros.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That bus tour sounds awesome!!
Wow what a wonderful DH, Celeste

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes he is Celeste!!.. I am lucky I can get Randy to open the boxes of plants when they come home

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm glad is hubby doesn't pop a cork because I bought more plants.

At least he finally wants to rip out the bushes in the front. I asked "oh so I can buy something to put there?" and he said yes...Woo hoo!!! Here comes my first JM!!!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Added one more JM to my Davidsan order. I really like the shirasawanums (like Autumn Moon, etc.), so I got a recent intro - Moonrise.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

By the way, David promised that he would always get me better varieties and individual plants than he sells to Bill.
