Is this what you have? Never heard of it! It says the fruits are extremely sweet!
Shes about too... #49
Yep LK I think that is what they are. Really dark purplish, brownish flowers on there right now. Have to keep my eye on it this summer to see what it does.
How cool... mine are just nowleafing out, they are babies.... me and bonnie both have some..
paw paws are suppose to taste kind of like banana so I have heard. That is one of things on my list I wanna have. I need one older cause I don't want to wait too long for fruit.
Morning all!
Debra I know what you mean the more I do the more I am amazed is left to do....LOL already this year I am behind....LOL
I have to do things slowly because the winds are horrible here, so everything is moved out to a somewhat protected spot and then moved again later.
Gotta help with the master gardeners today at 1pm, Mom to the grocery store and then hopefully me time.....
I've heard that paw paw's are also very, very sweet. I think I have to try one.
Well Ladies, I'll keep an eye on these and maybe I can find some smaller ones elsewhere in the woods. If I can I'll be glad to mail them out.
FOTV, I keep meaning to tell you and had to come in from the garden, those are the biggest lily bulbs I have ever seen. I thought they were softballs....LOL OK back out to mulch weed and play.
Well after a wander around we discovered that there is an entire grove of Paw Paw trees. Some are blooming, some are not. But there are bunches of them in the 3-4 foot range. So if anyone wants one for postage let me know. I'll mark the smaller ones with flags, and dig them out when they are leafed out a little more.
Neener
I'd like to get one. Let me know how much is the postage and I'll see if I can fit it in my budget. I'll have a little extra money this check.
Better make it two plants if you want fruit. I was reading it takes two plants to pollenate, if you want them to fruit, and they take several years to get fruit!
Oh, well maybe I should just buy them from the store to try one.
I have three small ones ( 7 inches tall) I would pay for postage for a larger one to put with them for another strain mix. If you have paypal I can paypal yu the money. Let me know..
Paw Paws are also hosts of Zebra Swallowtail Butterflies, sometimes called "Poor Man's Bananas" because the fruits are only about 3-4"" long. We just learned about native plants in class a couple of weeks ago and Paw Paw's were in the top 10 here in VA. Nita, are yours growing in a wet area or along a creek? They grew right next to us on the banks of a river when we lived in WV and the fruits ripened near the end of Summer or early Fall. That's the only time I've ever seen them growing or had the pleasure to taste them. I thought they were delish, not quite as sweet as a Chiquita, but almost a delicacy.
FOTV, I am mailing a package to you today. Hopefully everything will arrive in good shape. There are several different varieties of ee's with leaves, and several small bulbs of ee's. I mark each ee with its name.
Hope everyones day is a good one. Suppose to be beautiful here, wish I was off to play!
Bought a total of 120 bags of mulch yesterday. Brought 40 home and will pick up another 40 on Wednesday and another 40 after that. Home Depot has them 1/2 off. I am stock piling. I have a grove of pine trees and I put them in the middle where they won't get sun or much rain so they should last. Only problem everybody will have to think what to get me now for presents... LOL I know now I need concrete blocks.... always something.
Happy Birthday Debra!!! I'll let you know on the trees. You may just get one for your birthday. :0)
Fruity they are growing by the driveway and down towards the dip between our property and the neightbor. No creek there, but the water table is always pretty high up here. I wondered why we have so many Zebra Swallowtails. Always have had them. I'll be curious to watch these and see what happens with them.
It's Monday and I am already 3 days behind. :0)
Happy Happy Birthday, Debra! May all your blooms come true :) I heard everybody singing...LOL
Thank you, happ. I may need to take the truck to Lowe's.....they have gallon size Perennials 3 for $10.
aww thanks, you guys..
gallon perennials 3 for 10, dang I ran in there last night but didn't stop at the garden section, I keep telling myself I am not buying any plants until I get the plants planted I have! Why or why do I talk to myself....I don't even listen to me..... rofl
Debra hope you had a great day.
Debra, I try to keep my plants that need to be planted (messes as DH referes to them) on the west side of the house cause only me and the deer are over there....LOL Now the mg's and gardening friends they will be all over the place, but I know they understand and in fact I am not sure they even notice.... ;D I did have a mg one time stop at my house and I had a bunch of seedlings under the porch getting to use to the sun and wind and she told me "That would make me crazy, how do you stand all that on your porch!" I just sort of looked up and said, "They are just plants, what is so crazy about that?" rofl.... Now that I think about it she doesn't come to mg anymore....hummmmm
Beautiful shot of your yard, it looks so peaceful!
You guys I need to get away from lilies and daylilies......or I am going to look like I am selling them. Got any suggestions? I have some other perennials, but not many, coneflowers, looks like purple salvia but is a perennial, autumn joy, clematis. Maybe mix daisies, probably need a shrub (not to wild about shrubs tho) some late blooming stuff? Any ideas.......
Debra, I went to www.fast-growing-trees.com/CrapeMyrtles and they had some beautiful crape myrtle "trees", all were rated zone 7 except one that is zone 6. I could try a zone 6 but I am zone 5 and not protected. It says Muskogee Crape Myrtle blooms for 120 days wouldn't that be wonderful!
FOTV, I think I blew it.....I had the ee's in a plastic bag and I took them out to mail them, but I had 3 or 4 envelopes with small tubers for you that I think I left in the plastic bag. I used the plastic bag as stuffin in the box, so check the bag. I don't remember taking them out, hope it doesn't get too hot in the bag. Dang. I also found out if I don't get to our post office by 5 (they close at 6), the package doesn't go out until the next day. So, technically your package went out Tuesday I guess.
Another beautiful day.
I had to work until 6 tonight, watch survivor, then fringe, fell asleep, have no clue how that one ended, then made 7 more trips with pots of plants to set outside for the rain that is supposed to come.. ( yeal right) I planted alot of brugs on the south fence with coleus and other things around them, put plastic bird netting in the holes with ends left out so I can just pull them out this fall.
So far, everything is lookigng good. A box of brug root bottoms and cuttings that were rooted were sent out to two peeps, and one arrived ten days later dried out and the other never made it, so will resend them some more brugs after I get some more rooted, but not sending anymore without confirmations thats fer sure. I am so upset.
Deb it is also best bet to send any plants or cutting prioty & CONF # It might cost a few penies More But it is the safer way to go . . love your plant is that LIlac or Hydrangea ?
That looks like a beautiful lilac! Sure wish we could grow them here, but we have been told we need a hard long freeze for them to grow! Oh well, I will enjoy the pictures! Sure wish it was scratch and sniff!
Debra, we have had rain all week, and predicted for next week too! it is raining so hard here, you can't tell where the yard ends, and the street starts!
Don't work too hard!
LK Yankee Candle has Lilac ones and they are the truest scent of any I know. You would loveit. My lilac bush is right outside my window here and is just starting to leaf out.
I have a Kim lilac suppose to be smaller,,,,,but someone forgot to tell it.....LOL it also smells wonderful for a hybrid. In my old house there were 6 old fashioned lilacs at the front edge of the yard.....so wonderful.
Rain made it here today, so no digging in the clay dirt tomorrow....oh well lots of weeds and mulch to do. I do have lots of plant......I think the temps are suppose to go back to April......
Thanks Barb, I will have to go looking for them.
Joyce I have a Little Kim lilac too. It has never bloomed since I planted it. I guess it doesn't get enough sun. It is growing and is bigger this year. Was looking at it this morning in fact.
My Kim lilac is now about 5 feet tall and doesn't seem to slow down on the growing and really round! Sounds like me....umhhhh rofl.... Mine blooms for me very nicely every year. It is planted between two trees but the two trees are limbed up far enough it must get enough light. If it gets any bigger I am going to have to start moving things tho...... Dang that would be the tradt not to have it blooming....they do smell really great.
That is what they are called Little Kims? I have to find one.. LOL everyone here has them on this block, mine are diffrerent.. I saw some white ones out west today when I took a man home from service, he also has a bed full of ostrich ferns up and at em.. I loved them. I didn't know ferns over wintered..
happ, That box of EE's you sent are awesome. it was such a treat seeing my first leaves this year! Got them potted yesterday shortly after the mail ran and they're doing great. Can't wait til Summer and send you pics of them.
Perennial "Christmas Ferns" grow abundantly in our woods and are hardy to Zone 3. I'll be glad to dig fresh clumps for any of you who'd like to try a box of them.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/339/
Attached is a photo I took of several March 7th when we still had a smidgen of snow.
Do those grow in shade or sun? I have a shaded area aroud the tall elm tree out back where the other woodland things are planted, and I would love to paypal you postage for a clump of those ferns, Susan.
Who sent me "My first white" and "Yardsale" Yellow? they are repotted and getting very nice leaves on them..
I have those ferns in abundance too. They love the shade and they transplant easily. I dug a bunch and brought them up to the house around one of my trees.
mornin Nita, well you guys, i now am the proud momma of Oscar and Lou, tow gold fish, now swimmig in my Pond. I just released them, hope they make it so I can say yes to the two free coy being offered to me. The ringing in my ears woke me up from a dead sound sleep. yuk.. took a valium and a swig of beer ( I don't drink beer, but thought that would help, it is for my plants lol ) I transplated daydreams, ( from Faye) and her big leaf stem just bent right over so i gave her some some water and pinked the top of the leave stem off since there are three other leaf points there.. I just plaiin got interupted while working with them and forgot to water her in her new tub. Here is hoping. oh Oscar has white and black spots and a ornage spot on his nose. Lou has all gold except a white wing. Sorry about my spelling I just woke up . now for some nice van haoutes coffee.. and by the way I have two cases of it so if anyone wants a bag let me know.
You guys this is our 30 yr old plant.. I can't imagine what it would do outside..
WOW! 30 years for that plant is pretty amazing!
I think Faye sent the yard sale brugs?
What is van haoutes coffee? Never heard of it. Something local for you?
I typed a big old message and lost it. Guess it means I shouldn't type a big message....rofl.
30 years for a plant, it has been with you for thick and thin......that's quite a deal.
fotv, I have ferns that overwinter, but not be green in the winter. I am sure we will swap again, and I would love to have some of those. I bought ferns for my shady area and for behind the garden room, because pine trees are butted up to it and they don't let any sun in.
OK, have to tell you about yesterday, went on a road trip to Arnold's Nursery, in no where Kansas (sorry Debra...LOL). It is about 2 hours from my house and I would never go on my own, but I have a friend who loves the place. Any way I got some really unique plants for my planters I am doing downtown.
I bought:
zebrina rojo - love the colors
maurelii ensete - love the colors
echeveria gibbiflora - this is a cool cati type, I really wanted what they called Mexican hen & chick or something rose it was huge it took both hands to go around it, but they wanted 25.00, just couldn't do it, sides it would of eaten the concrete container I wanted it in. Still want it tho.
crassula coccinea campfile - another strange plant color, love it.
sedum rupestre angelina - same thing strange colors but I read it could be a bully in the garden but I am using it in a pot. crassula coccinea campfire - another strange one....LOL (do you see a pattern)
salvia lady in red - when reading on this one it says it will reseed to being a problem unless you pull the new plants out. Someone commented that the seedlings would still be red but not as brillant as the mother.
canna tropicanna phasion - I don't usually buy a canna in a pot, but I couldn't resist, the color of the leaves are just beautiful....
Had to work today at the last minutes (stupid computers!) and so I went by home depot picked up the last of my mulch and bought the lime green and the black sweet potatoe vine, and they had a new one that is a brownish color, really cool. I also bought creeping jenny I love it for pots, it drapes down so beautifully.
So I am offically broke! LOL......but happy, until I find the next neat plant.....I have way too many planters!
Our next Master Gardener meeting is at a greenhouse......not good...LOL one of our mg's has a commerical greenhouse......sign!
Well gotta go unload the mulch. Hope you all had a good weekend and temps are warming....
Debra are your brugs outside and doing ok? I would love to get them out, but I am a zone colder than you.....what to do....
