I see the other thread was getting long. Coming from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1076787/
Lots of goodies will be arriving soon. Can hardly wait now. Will be great to hear how all the plants arrive and what last minute choices are being made.
What have you ordered 2010 #5
I'm anxious, too, Pat...some nice choices out there!
just looked at the brent and becky bulbs and compared prices to the van engelen catalog - i will wait and order from van engelen this fall
They're cheaper? Same size and quality?
cheaper for almost all and as patti said above she has seen not a difference regardless of bulb size - i did not check bulb sizes - there are some variety differences
Wha, I think it is best to look at all the good bulb guys, as they do fluctuate in prices greatly per bulb. The Per Bulb Price is the key.
Often I want only 5 narcissus per cultivar, where as I want armies of the minor bulbs to use as Brent and Becky say for "shoes and socks" around the tulips and Narcissus. Van Engelen sells most things in large numbers as they are a wholeseller, so it is great source for those bulb armies and tulips that I want, while their retail company John Scheeper, B&B, Buggycrazy, Eflowergarden, will sell in smaller numbers, so they are perfect for bulbs I want smaller numbers of for my garden. But sometimes they have better prices per bulb so I will order in quantity from them.
I don't like to have fewer than 20 to 25 of any one tulip as I think they look best in a mass, so shopping around to see who has the best price per bulb is essential for those. So I shop them all as their prices are all over the place, just like in Holland during the tulip mania. I also can't see that buying bigger sized bulbs is better for landscape use if the bulb is one that will return. It will get bigger by the next year and I have not seen much difference in effect. Just the price. I also will wait to order during the Nov sales some of the more common varieties of things that I want to add to existing plantings like crocus, scilla, hyacinth, alliums, fritallias and muscari.
The biggest sales have come through Bleek at Eflowergarden and Touch of Nature when he clears out everything very cheaply like Dutchmaster 100 for 15.00 which is a 'King Alfred' type that WFF is selling at 96 for 122.25. Ouch! or from Van Engelen that sells their King Alfred type for 100/$49.75 .
Another was Tulipa tarda from Bleek at 200 for 15.00 which are on B&B now for 100 For $25.00 of from Van Engelen for 100 for $17.50.
These are the ones I use the most and the ones with the * are my favorite go to guys.
BLUESTONES
* BRENT & BECKY
* BUGGY CRAZY
DAVID BURDICK (narcissus)
* EFLOWERGARDEN
* JOHN SCHEEPERS
MCCLURE AND ZIMMERMAN
OLD HOUSE GARDENS
* TOUCH OF NATURE
* VAN ENGELEN
WHITE FLOWER FARM
yes i noticed that patti - i was only looking at the few types you had recently posted - i also noticed that van engelen in the catalog did not have smaller quantities and when i went to the website they did (20 not 5) - also a few where not in the catalog and on the web - will have to remember that this fall.
i plan to plant them in the beds i am enlarging where i know nothing is planted - i have not idea how you remember where you planted yours and the boundaries inside the beds:) i have bulbs coming up i planted last fall and it takes me a second to remember what the heck it is.
I took advantage of Costco's large selection. You've gotta get them when you see them. I'm pretty much a lily lover, particularly orientals, and zantedeschias because the bloom lasts so long.
Now waiting to be planted are heucheras, clematis, platycodons and some wetlands irises. All from Costco. We've got to wait some for the herbs to come in from the herb farm.
I can't wait to see what else will come up from last year. We've got the fall plantings coming up now.
Sometimes I'm a bit of an "impulse buyer," and that's why we bought 2 different hellebores on the weekend at a garden expo.
I would love to plant scatters of tulips; however we would then have tons of green stems with nothing on the top because of the deer.
After the first deer visit and a lot of ranting last spring, we put up semi-unattractive/ semi-visible deer netting, and it did the trick.
Last fall, for reasons I won't go into, we planted our bulbs in 35-gallon
I containers, and they are on our back deck. They have all sprouted and are growing beautifully. I think we can just put up netting across the top of the back steps.
We saw their little footprints in the snow on the deck, so we need to be careful. I am expecting they'll be visiting again when the buds appear. We live in a very residential area close to town, but I think we get them because they hide in a nearby cemetery.
Like you, Iris, I have an aversion to stems.
woo hoo.. my rosy dawn order is being shipped next week!!!!
Not a little excited are we? hee hee he
my B&B catalog came today... should have told Randy to take it and hide it
I label the bulbs as I plant them, but really it is the pictures which I take that show the beds and what is up and when that is most helpful I file all the pictures in two files by Year, Month and Week and either as a portrait photo of a particular plant or as a photo of a wide view of the garden. I also keep a journal which includes the bed name, so I can find what is suppose to be coming up in a particular bed. Works pretty well, usually. Patti
my e-flower garden order is going to be here Thursday.. I am guessing keep the hosta inside until it warms up?
http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/vbc/onewish1/85099/
mine from eflower was shipped today as well.
me too. :)
They are shipping stuff already??? I better make sure my orders aren't going to ship the week we're away.
Guess you requested the early shipment, Allison?
depending on what was ordered there were three different ship dates - i think everything is coming on the earliest "late" ship date i had.
I meant Rosy Dawn.
Your previous chat made me curious and went looking for Davidsans. Their site is impressive and I take it so is their product. Holly has shown some interest in jms and would like some more, looks like she may have found a good source. Ric
Patti, I wish I had 1/4 of your organizational skills...I plant, forget, then say "What the heck is that coming up?" Cathy, we all know what impulse buying is....last year I bought so many glads, I was planting them in strange places. I've bought about 30 of them so far, & that's it...I guess.
Ric, Davidsan's is very good. So is Wildwood and Fairweather. I never ordered from Topiary, but Bill likes them a lot.
I want to add a lot more Ruby Giant Crocus next year. This year I have had a chance to compare teh difference in the two and I tend to like the smaller species ones a tad more than the dutch. Although that means I'll need to plant double the amount for the same show. I also looked at the difference on that particular one between brent and becky's and decided to wait for scheepers catalog to open. Huge price difference... Actually I'll probably order them from the wholesale version of john cheepers. Isn't it van elgen? I know Van Bourgdeien has a wholesale version as well. The prices are way better tahn Van Bourg's, but I never ordered from that company before last fall, so I want to see how pleased I am with the stuff coming up from them. I can't believe how early my crocus are up and blooming this year! The earliest I've had them before was the first week of April. The weather we had here over the last couple of weeks is the weather I wish for every March! It is a nice change while it lasts. : )
I placed an order with Pickering for some roses and got an e-mail yesterday that they shipped. Can't wait to get them, they'll be the first plant order to arrive of the season. My roses I planted last year pretty much all have new buds growing, and teh ground is workable so I figure it should be good timing to gewt them planted. Hopefully the weather holds. : )
The roses I am geting are:
Sunrise http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/145632/ or here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.20243.1&tab=36
Victor Borge http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.6416.0&tab=36
Folklore http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.2795.0&tab=36
Ric - i have ordered from several places rarefind, greer gardens, forest farm, wildwood, davidsans, and topiary gardens. davidsans and topiary gardens are my first choice, then wildwood, then greers. have not ordered from fairweather.
david at davidsans provides large trees at a fair price although sources his trees from the west coast although only carries trees for our zone. diana at topiary garden grafts here own trees so they grow in our zone, they are a bit smaller, very full, and a thick trunk. Also trees are generally +/- $30 so you can get several with out robbing a bank:)
yes I requested that date Victor
How is it??
just planted last year... will find out if it returns soon... but I haven't spotted it yet.. and I was looking in that spot
Nice roses, Meredith! Hope they do well for you. Agastache rarely comes back for me, so I have to use it as an annual.
ordered dirt today - everything to be delivered on April 2nd i hope.
I NEED this rhody...
