2010 Garden Photos - Part 3

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i am not convinced beni kawa is brighter - have two of each and look the same to me

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Hmmm, thanks for the warning, wha!

-brighter?? Ok, ...now I've got some 'homework' to do! lol!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Must be your garden, Bill. ^_^ Actually, my red-twig dogwood is brighter than SK.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

we went through this last year - my red twig is a darker red - the sango and kawa are brighter reds - i can see all three from here - the sango actually looks brighter than kawa, it is a full grown tree so it is hard to compare to a thinner branched kawa and the kawa is up against a frasier fir tree - regardless they are very close to identical.

there are a bunch of red branched jm's on the market now wc - so you want to look at leaf shape and seasonal leaf color as well - check out topiary gardens they have a bunch of them at reasonable prices - cheaper than i paid at hd for a similar sized tree. you could call diana there and ask what she has in those and then research them.

Thomaston, CT

No more JMs! Every time I see one, I have to have it! Loved the red coloration on the bark...never thought about winter color but I should...going over to BOD, Victor, so congrats ahead of time.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Robin.

Yes, I remember, Bill. Tradition?? ^_^

Just reporting my experience. But I do like your muted colors too.

Cool photo...I really would like to grow some rhubarb, but can't find a permanent place for it.

Jim bought me a JM 2 years ago but it died over the winter. wha wha wha wha

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

lot's of talk - i see no proof in pictures:)

the sango right now is glowing a brilliant bright red with it being wet from the rain:)

thanks you proved my point - like i said a brilliant bright red when wet :)

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

That looks good in the fall, real nice yellow! I like it!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My neighbors keep their shades drawn all winter because of Beni kawa. They ask me if it's made of glow sticks.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

:) maybe mine will get like that too!

wc - glad you like it - that was from a couple years ago and the best color it ever had - beni kawa actually might have better color in the fall - kinda of mixed red/orange color. and if you want your nieghbors to keep there shades drawn..........

this is the only shot of my larger beni kawa in its first year here.

Not much red there. Must be your soil, Bill.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

fall photo - they get red'en up in the winter.

Forsythia in bloom all over the neighborhood.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

one hellebore is almost open... stinky & all the others still tight buds... Victor I might need another stinky one... I love that it's so tall

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Forsythia around here too is blooming. My daffs aren't opened yet but I see some yellow. I saw some blooming in the grassy median on the highway.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Congrats on your BOTD, Victor! There's a lot going on out your way. I see you're a half a zone warmer than I am, so that's it. Doesn't take much.

Bill, I love your SK and CQ, but especially the SK. Oh, and the fall color on that is gorgeous! Not everyone likes yellow for a fall color, but I do.

Sherrie, I think you JM's might be only marginally hardy in your zone. Not sure. Might try one in a more protected spot.

I like them too, Allison. Cool foliage.

Speaking of hellebores, look at this beauty. I have a few of the Winter Jewels series.

Let me try that again. Link seems not to be working. http://www.songsparrow.com/2010/plantlist.cfm?type=all&startrow=1&pageType=plantlist

Hmmmm...... Still not working, at least for me. Don't know what the problem is. Anyhow, it's at www.songsparrow.com, and look up the hellebores. Very nice!

You have a comma in the link that's why it's not working.

South Hamilton, MA

DH reports that the forsythia is going to have only leaves this yr & not flowers. Wonder what caused that. His favorite Cornealian cherry will pop flowers as soon as we get some sun.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I like that one Victor

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The little Tete-a-tete daffs are trying to open as a clump now. If they don't hurry they're going to get snowed on!!

Pixie, I just did a walk around and I have a small clump of Tete a Tete has opened this morning too. Last year they opened on April 5th which was earlier than the normal Mid April for them here in years past. No complaints. Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, they are really early for Maine!!
