To switch to the "gray" coming from white color we have: Gray Lady . Surely a medium flower but always perfect.

There is no gray MG in the collections of Japanese compagnies. But there are some very common cultivars such as Gray Mist, Gray Haze, etc. ...
They all have a purple reflection.

Dany - This one is superb! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7654237

I am curious ...

What makes Silver Wolf so special? I have grown "gray" blooming cultivars in the past as recently as last year (Silver Shadows). And they are lovely, but I know the seeds were VERY expensive for Silver Wolf. Why is this one so desired?

szarvas, Hungary

For me a beautiful gray will be - light gray, pale silver or silver with a velvet effect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors
Ipomoea Nil is not capable to give that quality.MG is able to produce only "cold" gray, to be warm gray you need a pinch of yellow.
MG does not synthesize carotene so my hopes are vain.
It reached a limit !
But our vine produce superb Blue flowers.

Dany - Please clarify ...

You are saying that the desired color of Silver Wolf really isn't available in an I. nil bloom? So instead you got the blue color shown in the above photo? Or is that blue another cultivar of I. nil? Sorry for being so confused.

What if you took a cool gray blooming I. nil and crossed it with the Full Moon I. nil? Could that produce the desired silver gray?

szarvas, Hungary

Becky; good idea, something to try . The question is : the yellow level will be enough hight !

Nil synthesized flavonoids that allows him to give a lot of true blue.
As commercial variety there is Akatsuki no Umi, Suigetsu.
But also mdernes varieties such as Berlin Blue,Sky Blue.
Here Silky Blue.

Not forget to mention Count Dracula with the two versions, one that has clear throat and other with dark blue throat.( !!! I have an idea !!! in fact this Blue throat is rare !!! ideal for a crossing !!! ).

No fewer than 34 genes manage mutation "margin" or "picotee".
Many cultivars have a margin.
Genes are named MR or M -1 ....2 etc....
Very wide margin.

The margin is also present in the mutant cultivars like here with this Misaki Peony.

Qinghai pine needle pale peach. (Q 0683)

Peach... hum ...!

Thumbnail by dany12

There is no margin in Hamaginga for example and cultivars with margins that are bizzard are very rare. I know Becky's Kohkan.
Or this one.

Thumbnail by dany12
szarvas, Hungary

In general the margin is white, but can appear colored.
In this case, it's another gene that is involved: the Ry - 1 gene of fading.

I am so partial to the bold margins, striking
The Misaki Peony is a beauty. So is the light color blue, Blue Bird,
reminding me of Blue Star

Just beautiful! Every single one of them!

I love this one: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7659431

All these colors, patterns, and other characteristics are why I love MGs so much! Particularly, I. nils! The bigger and bolder, the more I love them!

szarvas, Hungary

I just know Blue Ray that Joseph had in 2007.With a white marge.

They are among 12 genes of type Ry - ....
These are genes whose effects are discolouration of flowers.

Thumbnail by dany12
szarvas, Hungary

Effects not really bad because it provides crosses, a really beautiful effect.

Thumbnail by dany12
szarvas, Hungary

Many modern cultivars have these qualities.

Thumbnail by dany12
szarvas, Hungary

Sometimes the discoloration is less targeted.Like with Sazanami which gives a lot of different types of flowers.

Another commercial cultivar tormented by these genes: Akatsuki no Tsuyu (Blue Silk)

Or Honour of Shintoism ( enormous flower ) that plays with color. I color or I color not!
