We are coming from there:

Lets talk about the colors:
The eyes, cameras are only tools, brain gives a name and gives rise to feelings, pleasure.
The taste of colors is a " cultural " issue that in the West is partly coming from Ancient Roman World.
Romans loved colors so there were often two names for one color depending that were bright or dull.
At the individual point ,taste of color changes with time.
219 genes make the difference 2
Ipomoea Nil Japonica is a multi-hybrid.
A cross between several natural climbers from three continents.
Asia, America, Africa.
Asia with : Ipomoea Nil Tokyo , Nil Beijing (China) and Nil Nepal all blue-purple.
America with : Ipomoea hederacea, as blue-purple.
Africa with : Ipomoea Nil Africa.
PURPLE is the basis colour.
ps: Nil Africa would be present early (1100 years ago)
My question: How a vine native of Guinea (West Africa) arrive in China? It is the enigma of the millennium!
Nil Africa
wow, that is so pretty!
On the other thread, I loved the 10" bloom! THAT IS AMAZING!!! I strive for large blooms! :-)
Above... those are really nice shades of each color. I was rather interested to note that many of them have the lighter green/yellow foliage. Which really makes the colors pop! The Japanese do have a way with MGs! Especially I. nils! I think they are all outstanding in their own right! Thanks for continuing your lesson and history about MGs! I find your threads very educational and fascinating. You have me on the edge of my seat, Dany! LOL LOL LOL
Dany and others - This mother of all blooms ... http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/2009/08/11/dany12/7e7497.jpg
Do you think it might be Heian no Umi?
I am growing my 3rd one of this vine (F2). It is a cross (Heian no Umi x Rose Silk) of Antoinette's and the blooms were very large: http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/beckygardener/10537/
Here is the DG file: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/72358/
The cross of Antoinette's that I keep growing each generation is really a stunning bloom. Photos don't do it justice. Something about this vine and blooms has me growing it every year now just like the Moonflower. I am lured by large blooms! This one does not disappoint. :-)
Really special blooms Becky. Love your no id too, it's gorgeous
Dany beautiful blooms, Dawn of the
Sea and the bold dark one are really nice
I am drooling now... all of them! yours, too Becky..
largest bloom for me was that large pink striped/flaked akatzu no mai one.. only 5.5 almost 6 inches.. I couldn't imagine one 10 inches!
So apparently none of the larger blooming I. nils actually have a true "red" flower? I do know that the cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit) and cardinal climber (Ipomoea sloteri) blooms probably both come the closet to true red:

I am enjoying all the beautiful pink bloom photos, Dany! Truly lovely ... ALL of them!
I wonder what you would have to cross a pink bloom with to get "red"?

Dany - That first pink is really nice: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7640073 But all are beautiful and have some wonderful characteristics!
I love no Haru too, it's gorgeous.
I did not realize how pretty the candy pink is..
More than 20 genes are associated with the color white.
Gene of albinism which gives white seeds and who sometimes kill seedling at the cotyledon stage by lack of chlorophyll.
But also the genes that give Crystal Blue.

Or the famous Drizzling Blue ( shibori bloom - shibori leaf ).
Here a cultivar that resembles to Drizzling Blue but is NOT DB. (see variegated leaves ).
Dany - If I remember correctly, I believe I sent you seeds of the white NOID vine from the unknown Japanese seeds you sent me last year. I hope you grow some out. I'd like to see how they turn out. I wonder what the pale yellow blooming I. nil vine could be crossed with to bring out a deeper yellow? Any ideas. My first yellow I. nil seed germinated and looks good. Of course, won't know for sure until it blooms. But I have my fingers crossed. I have intentions of using that one for a cross. :-)
You also sent me seeds for Lunatic. THAT will be a fun vine to grow! ;-) Thank you again for a great trade and your generosity!
