Nice pic of your witch hazel, Victor. Love it! That one from the NYBG looks great.^_^
Nice pussy willows, Allison. I don't have any but a black one at my place.
We have been getting tons of rain here. We have a flood in back by the woods. There's a couple of depressions back there, one of which fills up with water seasonally, whenever there's significant rainfall, but now it's full to the brim almost, and the other one even has water in it, and we've never seen water there. The sump pump in the cellar is working overtime to pump out the water, and we have water on the floor even, perhaps about half an inch or less. I hate having a cellar we can't really use.
I have always wanted to make that depression into a real pond with liner and fish. It would make a fantastic pond, but would cost more than I can afford. That will be for when I hit the big lottery. Till then I can dream. I would like a nice workshop out there that would look like an old mill with a water wheel. That would be so cool!

Moss on rotting log piece.

Is it a 'vernal' pond, salamander eggs?
Very nice, Karen. You're getting there!
It might be. I've never looked for salamanders there. It has water in it only when we get a lot of rain, usually a lot less than this, though. This is the most I've ever seen it.
Karen
That is a description of vernal pond. they dry up in the summer.
nice shots Karen!!!
Yes, we have vernal ponds where I hike. Lots of loud frogs in early spring!
i have salamanders everywhere - try to save them as much as possible while gardening
Do you remember what type, Bill?
Love the moss! The moss in my yard and garden grows more every year, which I love. I don't even care if moss takes over the whole yard at some point...it would probably look better than our "lawn"!
I've never seen salamanders here, but hearing the peepers for the first time each season is such a great feeling.
Have not heard the peepers yet this yr., not warm enough. For salamanders, you often have to look under rocks.
hi lucy - mostly it is the reddish brown ones with the black down its back they are everywhere here - and with all the wall building and repairing i am constantly moving them to safety will i play - also find fatter black ones with yellow spots on the back - no blue ones that i have seen.
I love them.
Black with yellow spots are the 'common spotted' (really).Blue spotted are more vulerable according to DH. Thank you for protecting them while working. They all will have to hunker down in the leaves as the cold has not entirely disappeared as yet.
the blue ones are rare - i know friends in westford who have attempted to stop development projects because they are protected.
Noreaster, I would prefer moss over grass in the lawn myself. No mowing involved! I love moss.
Thanks, Allison.
Wrong thread for the one pic, JoAnn, but those lilies sure are pretty. You can post as many as you like here, as long as they're from this year. Sorry, I'm as bad as Victor.^_^
I love salamanders and find some now and then. The little brown ones, and rarely a black with yellow spots. Have not ever looked in the pond area. I'm sure there must be some there.
Have not heard peepers here yet. Can't wait to start hearing them peep.
We are still getting tons and tons of rain. More flooding here. If they rain ever slows down I'll go out and take some more pics. The brook down the street has completely flooded the woods. The property next to ours cannot be built on, as it borders too close to the brook and is considered protected wetlands. Nice to know we won't ever have close neighbors on that side.

A note from an ID book on spotted salamander 'after spring rains migrates to ponds for breeding' perhaps on the way to your pond, Bill.
i am sure they are - anticipating the thundering sound of peepers soon:)
Wow some beautiful pictures here can not wait to get back from NO to see my gardens.......
Wow JoAnn that was fast.
trip had her excited:)
I am so happy with these white ones. Debbilu found them toward the bottom of the rack. I never would have found them.
We had a great time and when we were leaving(being the only 2 customers there) there was a woman getting out of her car twittering and smiling. Gardeners are so familiar with each other. Deb and I knew exactly what she meant.
She was on Twitter??
I'm not as fast as anyone thinks. It was a combo already I just substituted the White BES for the yellow that was already in the combo.
I didn't notice that she was twittering, but she was excited that the nursery opened!
I'll go back in a couple weeks to see how things are growing. There were a couple things I was interested in, but I forgot to take notes.
No perennials at our garden centers here yet. I'm waiting paitiently (NOT!).
Will probably get salamanders migrating to my ponds too, soon.
Glad you 2 had such a good time shopping. I was with my friend Karen at Lowe's and HD on Sat., and we had a great time. No perennials in yet, but they do have pansies. Still inside the store, though. I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I got some great buys on primroses that were finished blooming, just $1 each. I bought all they had left, which was 6. I also got some houseplants in 1 gal. pots for $1 each. Got a draceana and a corn plant. Then for $1.98 each I got a very little variegated draceana and a little bitty aloe that has horizontal white stripes. At least I think it's an aloe. Some sort of succulent, anyhow. The primroses and 1 gal. houseplants I got at Lowe's, and the last 2 I got at HD.

now that i think about it the salamanders may already be in the sea out back (the wet lands/pond had increased to lake size, with this continued deluge it has become a sea, a small craft warning has been issued by local authorities) - i saw what i thought were pollywogs last week at the edges - they were quick to hide so never got a good look at them - thought it was early for them so could have been salamanders
Do you have model sail boats? They would be fun on the pond & could be built in the winter.
Yes, sailboats would be fun, but only after this rain finally ends. I don't want to be out there getting drenched.
